<ul class="summary-list"><li>Taking a quick jog or bike ride instead of sitting all day may reduce blood pressure, research suggests.</li><li>A few minutes of vigorous exercise each day can help stave off disease and improve longevity.</li></ul>Replacing a few minutes of sitting each day with a quick run or bike ride can reduce blood pressure and help stave off heart disease, a new study suggests.Researchers from University College London and the University of Sydney analyzed activity tracker data from previous studies, which included 14,761 volunteers from the UK, Australia, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.On average, study participants spent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-being-more-active-at-work-was-less-productive-2024-8">10 hours a day sitting or otherwise being sedentary</a> and about 16 minutes a day doing exercises like cycling.Using their own model to estimate how different activities impact blood pressure, they concluded that small changes could do a long way.Swapping out five minutes of sedentary time per day with physical activity like biking or taking the stairs led to a decrease in blood pressure, they found.Adding more activity helped to lower blood pressure even more: 10 to 20 minutes of exercise daily reduced blood pressure enough to lower heart disease risk by about 10%, according to the researchers' estimates.The findings, published November 6 in the American Heart Association journal <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.124.069820">Circulation</a>, suggest that short bursts of higher-intensity exercise may be most effective at lowering blood pressure."For those who don't do a lot of exercise, walking did still have some positive benefits for blood pressure," Jo Blodgett, first author of the study and research fellow at University College London, said in a press release. Previous research shows <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/study-hiit-short-workouts-boost-fitness-longevity-stroke-survival-2024-8">quick workouts</a> can improve overall fitness and help prevent early death.The latest study helps us better understand how exercise might be used most effectively to help people reduce the risk of serious health conditions, and what a meaningful daily dose might look like.High blood pressure, or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/treatments/hypertension">hypertension</a>, is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The FDA has approved a first-of-its-kind blood test for colon cancer screening.</li><li>While the test has been available since 2022, the approval could make it more accessible.</li></ul>The FDA has approved a blood test as a primary screening tool for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-know-about-colon-cancer-symptoms-diagnosis-chadwick-boseman">colorectal cancer</a>, opening the door for more people to get tested without paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket.Known as Shield, the blood test is produced by the biotech company Guardant Health. Although the screening tool has been commercially available since 2022, patients often faced an out-of-pocket cost of $895.The test is the first of its kind to receive FDA approval, which could prompt easier access for more patients, since Medicare and insurance companies are more likely to cover it.The test can be completed via a blood draw at a routine medical exam, making it less invasive than a colonoscopy.It works by detecting signals of cancer in the blood, such DNA shed by tumors, according to the Guardant fact sheet. However, it is more effective at flagging later stage cancer.While it's not a substitute for other testing, as patients will still need a colonoscopy to confirm a diagnosis, it could help close the gap between patients who could benefit from screening, and those who actually complete the recommended tests.Dr. David Chung, a Harvard Medical School professor who published research on the test supported by Guardant, called the FDA approval a "tremendous leap forward" in screening options for colorectal cancer (CRC) that could lead to life-saving early interventions."This decision will help make screening tests more broadly accessible and propel blood-based testing and CRC screening into a new era. With increased screening rates and early cancer detection, many more lives can be saved," Chung said in a press release.<h2 id="53dfb30d-921c-428f-919b-c028238290a9">Colon cancer is on the rise, and early treatment is key</h2>Colorectal cancer is expected to cause more than 50,000 deaths in the US in 2024, making it the second-leading cause of cancer-related death after lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ASC). The ACS also estimates more than 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed this year.Older adults are increasingly less likely to die of colorectal cancer, in part thanks to better screenings which can catch the disease early.Colon cancer is highly treatable when caught before it spreads to other areas of the body, according to the National Cancer Institute.However, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-cases-doubled-young-people-2024-5">rate of diagnoses and deaths from colon cancer</a> has been steadily going up in people under 45, alarming doctors and researchers.We don't fully understand why <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cancer-young-rates-colorectal-breast-stomach-colon-treatment-2024-5">younger people are getting colon cancer and dying from it</a> more frequently.Risk factor for colorectal cancer include genetics, a family history of colon cancer or colorectal polyps, and other health conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.Strategies to help <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-risks-young-people-reduce-diet-alcohol-2024-2">reduce the risk of colon cancer</a> include eating a healthy diet with plenty of fiber, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco use.

A <keyword id="20558223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blood-test" source="keywords">blood test</keyword> measuring two specific fats, along with <keyword id="20100635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflammation" source="keywords">inflammation</keyword>, could help predict a woman's risk of developing heart conditions in the next 30 years, according to a study of nearly 28,000 women in the US. The two fats in one's blood sample that the test measured were LDL, or 'bad' <keyword id="19898368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cholesterol" source="keywords">cholesterol</keyword>, and lipoprotein(a), which is partly made of LDL. Inflammation was measured by detecting levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive proteins. When the three measures -- inflammation, cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) -- of a woman's blood sample were analysed together, researchers found that women having the highest levels were 2.6 times more likely to have a major adverse <keyword id="23010849" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cardiovascular-event" source="keywords">cardiovascular event</keyword>, including a heart attack. The link was found to be even stronger for stroke -- women with the most elevated levels were 3.7 times more likely to experience a stroke over the next 30 years, the team of researchers, including those from Brigham and Women's Hospital, US, said. They added that the three measures can better predict the risk of major cardiovascular events over the next three decades than measuring only one. The findings were published in the <keyword id="20060225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-England-Journal-of-Medicine" source="keywords">New England Journal of Medicine</keyword>. "We can't treat what we don't measure, and we hope these findings move the field closer to identifying even earlier ways to detect and prevent heart disease," author Paul M Ridker, Brigham and Women's Hospital, said. For the study, the researchers analysed blood samples and medical information from 27,939 healthcare providers living in the US, who participated in the <keyword id="23010850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Womens-Health-Study" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Women's Health Study" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Women's Health Study">Women's Health Study</keyword>. The women were on average aged 55 at the study's start (1992-1995) and followed for 30 years. Over the study period, about 3,660 of the women experienced a major cardiovascular event for the first time, including a heart attack, stroke, or death due to related reasons. Assessing cardiovascular risk individually due to each of the three measures, the researchers found that the women having the highest levels of inflammation had a 70 % higher chance of a major cardiovascular event. The women with the highest levels of 'bad' cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) were found to be at a 36 % and 33 % higher chance, respectively, of developing heart-related conditions. While only women were studied for this research, the researchers expect to find similar results in men, they said. Studies in recent years have shown how high levels of inflammation can interact with fats to compound heart disease risks, which helps explain why lower levels are better, according to the researchers. They explained that immune cells, which help the body repair wounds or infection, can also sense the accumulation of extra cholesterol in cells or become active in response to the build-up of plaque and send out inflammatory signals. This creates a hyper-inflammatory environment where plaque can form, become larger, or even rupture -- and cause cardiovascular events, the authors said. Through a combination of lifestyle changes and drug therapy, the researchers said that each of the three risk factors can be addressed. Studies have shown that lowering cholesterol and inflammation both significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, they said. The new data strongly supports earlier and more aggressive use of targeted preventive interventions, particularly among women for whom cardiovascular disease remains under-diagnosed and under-treated, the researchers said.

The idea is that it's not just about what you eat, but when. Adherents limit all of their food intake to a specific window of time each day, which varies based on which style of fasting they follow.In the new study, people who fasted for three months lost more weight than those who didn't, and ate fewer calories without specifically trying to.Here's more detail:<h2 id="5e9cea79-ff4c-41d7-a500-5569ad7572e6">The study, explained</h2>A research team from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and The Salk Institute wanted to test whether fasting could help people with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/metabolic-syndrome-diet">metabolic syndrome</a>, a collection of risk factors for chronic illnesses. The condition includes <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-warning-signs-you-might-have-high-blood-sugar-doctors-2024-9">high blood sugar</a> as well as high levels of body fat, and increases the odds that someone will develop heart disease and diabetes.For three months, the researchers followed 108 adults with metabolic syndrome, in theirs 50s on average.Half of the participants were randomly assigned to follow their typical eating pattern, with some general nutrition advice about healthy eating, such as seeking inspiration from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mediterrean-diet-healthiest-best-overall-2024-1">Mediterranean diet</a>.The other half were given the same advice, but were also instructed to limit their eating to eight to 10 hours a day, and tracked their eating on a smartphone app called myCircadianClock.By the end of the study, both groups lost a small amount of weight.
