But the crypto-mining industry, which lobbied hard against the bill, saw it as a potential precedent that other states, and maybe even the federal government, might follow.Supporters of the bill wanted to see miners banned from using the city's power grid as the state executes <a href="https://www1.nyc.gov/site/sustainability/achievements/renewable-energy.page#:~:text=A%20clean%20energy%20system%20is,100%25%20clean%20electricity%20by%202040">climate-change themed</a> initiatives that rely on electricity.White Rock Management is a <keyword id="14313891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="crypto-miner" source="Orion">crypto miner</keyword> that uses <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cowa-green-crypto-mining-startup-tips-industry-for-consolidation-2022-4">sustainable techniques</a>, like hydro electricity, which are immune to such moratoriums. But that hasn't stopped its CEO Andy Long from voicing his concerns over the regulation."When government starts to decide what you can and can't do with a piece of hardware, it's the thin end of the wedge. It's too close to the state deciding what private enterprise can do," Long told Insider.White Rock, which is based in Switzerland, mines 712 petahashes, or 0.7 exahashes, per second and owns just under 1% of the network. It plans to expand its bitcoin-mining operations to other countries, including the US, to diversify its mining locations and push its network share to 1.5% by 2024. Long, who was a miner nine years before joining White Rock in 2021, knows how critical regulations can be to business. He recalled being offered "very cheap power" in Iran a few years back. He turned down the offer and months later it proved to be a wise decision when sanctions were announced against Iran, a measure that would have disrupted plans. "You don't want to have all your eggs in one basket. It's good to be globally diversified," Long said.In White Rock's eyes, the US is an attractive country overall when examining infrastructure and regulation. It's also keen on positioning itself for the mergers and acquisitions it believes will soon follow the recent market selloff. "There are 29 listed miners between the US and Canada. And then you have privately-held entities like ourselves. I think there's going to be quite a lot of activity of companies merging and acquiring each other. So we want to have a presence in North America to be part of that picture," Long said.White Rock is keeping an eye on how states like New York handle the crypto-mining industry. If New York's governor signs the moratorium, it wouldn't stop White Rock from entering the Empire state because the corporate miner mainly uses clean energy sources, Long said. White Rock's operations include 19 hydro-electric stations on a river in Sweden that generate 4,300 megawatts, of which White Rock uses more than 50 megawatts. The miner aims to have a similar setup in the States, if possible. Northern New York is on its radar, but the state doesn't offer enough hydroelectric options to keep it top of White Rock's list of viable locations for its hardware. The company is looking into other ways to source energy in case hydro electricity isn't always possible like solar, wind, and nuclear. But Long said flare gas has yet to be fully efficient. So White Rock will keep an eye on the legislation surrounding it. "We've seen some states actually legislate to restrict flaring. And we think that's a good thing because there's better ways of doing that," Long said. "But that's getting into direct emissions. It's not saying what you do with the power. That's what I don't like about the New York legislation."

The eight-year deal supplies Bitfarms with 210 Megawatt of electricity, at a price of $0.02 per kilowatt per hour in the first four years. In a <a href="https://bitfarms.com/app/uploads/2021/04/2021-04-19-Bitfarms-Final-Press-Release-Argentina-Expansion.pdf">statement</a>, Bitfarms said this will be enough electricity to create revenues of around $650 million or 11,774 <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-editorial">bitcoin</a>. This is however dependent on what happens with the bitcoin price over that time. Bitfarms currently operates five industrial mining sites in the Canadian province of Quebec, with a total wattage of 69 megawatts. At 210 megawatts and 55,000 state-of-the-art mining machines, the Argentine site will have almost three times as much capacity as all current Bitfarms sites put together. Bitfarms mining operations run on hydropower to make <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-editorial">bitcoin mining</a> more environmentally friendly. The company has made a significant expansion effort over the past year by purchasing new mining machines and is working towards being listed on the NASDAQ. In March, it announced that it had ordered 48,000 MicroBT miners, a "substantial portion" of which will be used in the new facility in Argentina. A key factor in the expansion into Argentina is cost reduction. "We previously reported the break-even cost to mine a bitcoin during the fourth quarter of 2020 was approximately $7,500 in Quebec. If the new Argentina facility was operating during the same period, we estimate the breakeven cost to mine the same bitcoin would have been $4,125, a 45% savings as compared to Quebec," Bitfarms said in a statement. This will also enable Bitfarms to use older mining equipment that requires more electricity in a more cost effective way. Crypto miners are increasing their capacity as bitcoin continues to increase in value. Just last week, the crypto currency reached a record of over $64,000 just as the crypto exchange Coinbase went public on the US stock market. Since then, the price has come under some pressure. On Tuesday, it was trading around $55,282.19.

Mining is the process by which transactions on bitcoin's public accounting ledger, called the <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-editorial">blockchain</a>, are verified without relying on a central authority. In order to verify new transactions, mining computers must race to solve an extremely complex problem, and those computations require a tremendous amount of energy. Once a bitcoin miner solves the problem, they're rewarded with a transaction fee and newly minted bitcoins. Exactly how much energy the bitcoin network consumes depends on who you ask. Estimates from the <a href="https://cbeci.org/">University of Cambridge</a> say the total yearly electricity consumption of the Bitcoin network is 127.70 terawatt-hours, while<a href="https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption/"> Digiconomist</a> estimates the network's electrical energy to be 79.63, which the site says is comparable to the power consumption of Chile. A technology that consumes the same amount of energy as an entire country sounds alarming, but Dan Held - head of growth at cryptocurrency exchange Kraken - argues the bitcoin network has been unfairly targeted by people who police bitcoin's taking its energy consumption out of context. "What it really comes down to when people don't like bitcoin's energy consumption is...they simply don't like Bitcoin," said Held. "And so people that are against <keyword id="2721952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="crypto" source="Orion">crypto</keyword> think that any energy consumption from Bitcoin is wasteful." Held stressed that everything in the world requires energy, and as technology advances, the amount of energy needed to power that technology will inevitably increase. He also estimates that the existing banking system uses over 650 terawatt-hours of energy per year. But calculating the energy consumption of both the bitcoin network and the existing financial system is difficult, as it's hard to account for every factor that supports each network. If one considers the air conditioning in a bank branch to contribute to the financial system's total energy use, one could also argue the electricity used to power a bitcoin trader's cell phone should be accounted for when calculating bitcoin's energy use. Further, since bitcoin miners are financially incentivized to operate on the cheapest electricity possible, that sometimes means they use energy that otherwise would have gone to waste, according to Mason Jappa, CEO of <a href="https://www.blockwaresolutions.com/" target="_blank">Blockware Solutions</a>, an operator of some of the largest mining rigs in the US. Jappa told Insider that some US rigs are powered by by a process called "gas-flare recapturing." When natural gas is mined, a portion of the gas is flared into the air. Bitcoin miners capture the flare and use it for energy, preventing it from being released into the open air. But the need for cheap energy also means that a lot of the miners still rely on coal, which is the least expensive form of energy in many areas around the world, said Aroosh Thillainathan, CEO of Northern Data, a company that develops and operates infrastructure for <keyword id="1660859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="bitcoin-Mining" source="Orion">bitcoin mining</keyword> and other high performance computing needs. There's no clear data on exactly how much of the total bitcoin network is powered by renewable versus non-renewable energy, but Thillainathan estimates roughly 50% of mining is done in China, and a significant portion of mining there is powered by coal. Thillainathan told Insider that as the bitcoin network grows and the profitability of the mining increases, more energy will be required. As an operator of mines himself, he said miners should have a responsibility to the environment. Northern Data's high performing computing centers in Norway, Sweden, and Canada use only renewable energy. He hopes that as mining grows more profitable as the bitcoin expands and the price rises, more miners will rethink their operations and move towards using more sustainable energy sources. "I'm a big believer in the bitcoin itself," he told Insider. "It's a great way to store your wealth...but as an infrastructure provider, we have to move to be as environmentally friendly as possible." Thillainathan said that mining using "dirty energy" isn't sustainable in the long-term, because he anticipates governments will one day crack down on the use of coal plants.

CRYPTO INSIDER: A teenage prodigy told us how to fix bitcoin's energy problem

In a big note on crypto and blockchain, the bank said bitcoin's decentralized network would not be able to address a liquidity shock. When such events have occurred in the US - most notably after the financial crisis - central bankers pumped extra cash into the economy to make up for a decline in lending and spending in the private sector. Since there's no central entity that controls the bitcoin network and the number of coins released each year is fixed at a certain rate, such a liquidity infusion would be close to impossible. Here's the bank:"The ability to provide adequate liquidity is a hallmark of a well-functioning market, but more so during times of crisis. One benefit of fiat money (legal tender issued by a central bank), is that it can be used to provide emergency liquidity from the outside. This is the role central banks play as the lender-of-last resort."Bitcoin evangelists, however, told Business Insider that JPMorgan's case rests on the assumption that printing money to shore up an economy is a good thing. "This is a classic case of creating the problem you offer to solve, and exactly why bitcoin exists," said Aaron Lasher, the chief marketing officer at Breadwallet, a cryptocurrency tech company."Why do we have the need for "emergency liquidity" in the first place?"Lasher says it all boils down to the fact that economies are based on fiat currency, which can be printed at the whim of central bankers. "So banks have no incentives to manage liquidity risk precisely because the marginal cost of printing more dollars by the central banks is zero, providing a guaranteed backstop against sustaining losses incurred by excess risk taking," he said. Arthur Hayes, the chief executive at BitMEX, a peer-to-peer crypto trading platform, said in an email to Business Insider that such policies ultimately translate into inflation in other financial assets."If money printing solved the ills of economic collapse, Weimer Germany, Zimbabwe, and most recently Venezuela would be the most productive and economically sound societies on earth," Hayes said."Money printing delays the inevitable," he added. "Without the ability to print base money at all, any institutional that extended credit would be evaluated by the market on its ability to responsibly originate loans."Business Insider's Fed watcher Pedro da Costa said it's important to note the difference between failed states printing money "willy nilly" and developed countries such as the US implementing certain monetary policy. "The US is not Venezuela," he said. "From a monetary standpoint, the US dollar is the reserve currency. Venezuela is exposed to currency risk, needs to sell oil in dollars.
