<ul class="summary-list"><li>The pandemic forced cities to remold their streets to give more room to pedestrians and <keyword id="24462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bikes">bikes</keyword>, but it also thrust their longstanding lack of good <keyword id="6359227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biking">biking</keyword> infrastructure into the spotlight. </li><li>A natural ebb and flow in <keyword id="6366594" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cycling">cycling</keyword> popularity, car-centric and unsustainable planning practices, and the auto industry's effort to claim streets for cars all made US cities fall behind some of their bike-friendly European counterparts, experts said. </li><li>Cities have been making progress, however, and some of the temporary measures put in place during the pandemic are becoming permanent. </li></ul><p>Walk the streets of many major US cities today and you'll find cones, bollards, and barricades creating space for pedestrians and cyclists that, before the pandemic, belonged to cars. It's an urbanist's dream, but it's come at an immense cost. </p><p>When COVID-19 hit last spring, cities from Oakland to Philadelphia scrambled to meet the needs of a public abruptly uprooted from its daily routine and forced to physically distance. Taking advantage of a steep drop-off in car traffic, <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> departments began closing streets to give people more space to roam while designating temporary bike lanes to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bicycle-lanes-cycling-pandemic-coronavirus-2020-10">accommodate a pandemic-era surge in cycling</a>. </p><p>And although the pandemic highlighted some cities' ability to innovate, it also forced the US' longstanding lack of good biking infrastructure into the spotlight.</p><p>After all, people didn't start biking when the pandemic began; it's been on the rise for years. And although lots of American cities have decent bike lanes, scores of cities outside the US - most famously European metropolises like Copenhagen and Amsterdam - have spent decades building out highly developed and widely utilized biking networks. </p><div type="image" title="Oakland streets closed" height="1333" width="2000" msid="79968199" hostid="261"></div><p>It's a wonder, then, that those ways of thinking haven't taken hold in the US, forcing the country's major cities to step up their efforts amid the crunch of a pandemic instead of remolding themselves over the course of many decades. But it's actually by design. </p><p>Mobility and urban planning experts say that cycling's relatively brief periods of popularity, transportation departments' reactionary and car-centric planning habits, and the auto industry's war to cement cars as the primary way of getting around - both on streets and in the American cultural consciousness - made the US fall behind many of its European counterparts. </p><h2><strong>The boom and bust cycle of cycling</strong></h2><p>The current obsession with biking - extraordinary as its backdrop may be - is just the latest in a more than two-centuries-long boom and bust cycle, Dr. Evan Friss, a historian at James Madison University, told Business Insider. As biking saw brief surges in popularity followed by decades-long drops in public interest, Friss said, there was rarely enough sustained enthusiasm and momentum for lasting infrastructure improvements to take hold.  </p><p>Friss said the first major boom came in the 1890s, when the modern bicycle as we know it hit streets. The newly developed "safety bicycle" - as opposed to the high-riding and riskier pennyfarthing - exploded in popularity and led well-to-do cycling enthusiasts to push for paved roads and other ambitious infrastructure projects to make biking easier.</p><p>"Americans in cities across the country began dreaming up these cycling cities and thinking about how their lives, their culture, their society [would] be altered by having an affordable - eventually - private form of transportation, which never really existed before," Friss said. </p><p>During the late 19th century boom, a 3-foot-wide path of asphalt was built along the gutter in Manhattan for commuters going down to Wall Street, some hundred miles of lanes were constructed in St. Paul, Minnesota, an elevated wooden path was erected in Pasadena, California<strong>,</strong> and a dedicated bike lane was established from the middle of Brooklyn down to Coney Island, to name a few initiatives.</p><div type="image" title="GettyImages 514881876" height="1856" width="2500" msid="79968205" hostid="261"></div><p>Interest faded around the turn of the century. By the Great Depression, when people flocked to bikes in large numbers again, the infrastructure of the 1890s had vanished. In the early 1970s, the oil crisis drove car owners to bicycles yet again, spurring a new emphasis on building bike lanes and bike-safety publicity campaigns. But, Friss said, that all died out in short order as well. </p><p>"In many of these boom periods, bicycles are witnessing an explosion of popularity despite, ... not because, of the infrastructure in place," Friss said. "They start to build infrastructure, but usually the periods of popularity are so brief that there's not much staying power to them."</p><p>Historically, US cities scrambled to catch up with demand rather than leading with infrastructure - and Friss said that, coupled with the natural ebb and flow of cycling popularity, is one of the chief reasons that major biking infrastructure projects never stuck.</p><h2><strong>US transportation departments, in large part, don't prioritize bikes or sustainability</strong></h2><p>Many European cities famous for their strong cycling networks were able to develop them because their transportation departments think top-down rather than bottom-up, Tabitha Combs, a researcher of transportation planning and policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told Business Insider. If you build it, they will come, the European planners say.</p><p>But that's not so in the US, Combs said. US transportation departments take into account anticipated demand when planning and funding new roadways, but they're much more reactionary when it comes to pedestrian and bike projects, Combs said. </p><p>"When it comes to walking and bicycling, most state DOTs and most local DOTs wait until there is a demonstrated demand, meaning there's a worn path on the side of the road where people are walking, or - as dark and morbid as it sounds - enough people are killed crossing a multi-lane road that eventually action is warranted," Combs said. </p><div type="image" title="Temporary covid bike lanes in boston" height="1418" width="2500" msid="79968207" hostid="261"></div><p>Many cities that have succeeded in building out biking infrastructure overseas did so as part of a concerted move to get people on bikes and push their cities in a more sustainable direction - not just to meet existing demand, multiple experts said. European transportation officials, Combs said, understood the negative environmental impact of car dependence much earlier than their US counterparts, and they began shaping city streets accordingly.</p><p>The key difference between US and European transportation authorities, according to Sam Schwartz, a transportation consultant and former New York City traffic commissioner, is that the latter "believe in science."</p><p>"Amsterdam and Copenhagen are fabulous examples of cities that looked at their horizon and saw where automobile dependence was taking them - in terms of the environment, in terms of access to opportunity, in terms of financial cost, the financial burden of providing streets for cars, and they said, 'We need to do something different,'" Combs said. "Places like that built out their bicycling networks and their walking networks in advance of the demand, and they're still building out those networks."</p><p>What US transportation departments historically missed, experts said, is that biking infrastructure can create demand by giving people more options. </p><p>European cities have incentivized people to ride by leading with infrastructure for some 50 years, Friss said. The result is that biking there isn't so much a niche activity with a particular demographic - as it is in the US - as an established way of getting around that's embraced by all genders and ages, Friss said.</p><div type="image" title="biking in amsterdam" height="1583" width="2500" msid="79968209" hostid="261"></div><p>But the philosophy surrounding bike infrastructure has evolved somewhat in recent years.  </p><p>Friss said the latest bike boom - which began in the mid 2000s and continues to this day - has seen a substantial push for initiatives that don't just meet demand, but also promote sustainability and get more people to ride. That's partially why it has lasted more than a decade, he said, while previous booms tended to fizzle out after six or eight years. </p><p>Although a lot has changed since Schwartz oversaw the construction of New York's first protected bike lanes in 1980 - which were met with huge opposition and were quickly torn out - the general attitude within government that road projects take precedence over biking or pedestrian initiatives persists, he said. </p><p>"We have a budget in New York State and New York City over the next 10 years of about $25 billion for roads and bridges," Schwartz said. "The Queens Ribbon [Schwartz' proposed pedestrian and cycling bridge going into lower Manhattan] would be about $100 million. And I can't find anyone in government willing to take it seriously." </p><h2><strong>Automotive interest groups worked tirelessly to claim city streets for the car</strong></h2><p>The story of how bikes wound up sidelined from city streets is inextricably linked to the parallel tale of how cars came to dominate them. </p><p>"As automobiles got prioritized on streets, they became hostile environments for everybody else," Peter Norton, a historian at the University of Virginia and the author of <em>Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City</em>, told Business Insider.</p><p>The prevailing historical narrative would have you believe that cars were so useful and attractive that they were destined to rule US roads, but Norton said that narrative was largely propagated by the auto industry itself. </p><p>"The version of history that we've been told primarily comes from automobile businesses," Norton said. "They were the first historians of the car, and they're still the most vocal historians of the car today." </p><p>In reality, Norton said, there was always strong opposition to the automobile - even from its earliest days - and auto industry groups have spent the last century reshaping roads and molding public opinion to better accommodate them.  </p><div type="image" title="New York Street 1915" height="1875" width="2500" msid="79968211" hostid="261"></div><p>When cars first hit the road in significant numbers in the early 1920s, Norton said they faced a severe backlash as they disrupted the formerly pedestrian-friendly streets and began killing <a href="https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1924/11/23/104162618.html?pageNumber=179">thousands of people annually</a>. The laws, social norms, and planning standards of the time all put pedestrians first, and most major institutions agreed that motorists - not pedestrians - would need to make concessions to keep streets safe. </p><p>Threatened by the budding anti-car movement of the 1920s, auto manufacturers, dealers, and enthusiast groups set out to redesign laws and engineering standards to claim streets for the car, Norton said. </p><p>Around that time, automakers popularized the term "jaywalking" and lobbied to make it a crime across the country, Norton said - both as a strategy for keeping the roads free of pedestrians, and for <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history">shaming those who dared overstep that boundary</a>. "Jay" was contemporary slang for someone from outside the city - a close approximation today might be "hayseed" or "hick." </p><p>The industry also helped craft the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history">1928 Model Municipal Traffic Ordinance</a>, a federal guideline cities could use to manage traffic that said pedestrians could only cross streets at designated crosswalks. </p><div type="image" title="GettyImages 804477496" height="2047" width="2500" msid="79968214" hostid="261"></div><p>In the early 1930s, the National Highway Users Conference - a lobbying group formed by General Motors, the American Automobile Association, and other industry groups - began a wildly successful campaign to <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/5/14/8605917/highways-interstate-cities-history">make highway construction a public responsibility</a>, and the <a href="https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/publicroads/96summer/p96su10.cfm">1956 Federal Aid Highway Act</a> cemented that responsibility. It heavily subsidized highway construction and laid the groundwork for the current, near-50,000-mile interstate highway system that runs through nearly every major central business district in the country.</p><h2><strong>A cultural offensive</strong></h2><p>The industry also waged a pervasive cultural offensive to shift public perception of the automobile and, eventually, cement cars as an immutable fixture in the American way of life, Norton said. </p><p>The notion of the US' love affair with the automobile, Norton argues, isn't so much an organic attraction, but rather the result of a concerted, decades-long public opinion campaign. That very turn of phrase - "America's love affair with the automobile" - first appeared in the late 1950s as a GM marketing slogan, Norton said, and then was used to promote a 1961 television special on the early history of the car called "Merrily We Roll Along," hosted by Groucho Marx and sponsored by DuPont, which had a 23% stake in the automaker at the time. </p><p>By the late 1920s, Norton said practically every public school in the US had traffic-safety education, and most of the materials were provided at no charge by AAA. That too was instrumental in teaching an entire generation - and those that followed - that streets were primarily a place for cars, not for pedestrians or cyclists. </p><h2><strong>Where do we go from here?</strong></h2><p>Despite the bike-friendly initiatives some cities have introduced in recent years, they still have a long way to go. Nearly 860 cyclists were killed by drivers in the US in 2018, making it the deadliest year for bikers since 1990, according to <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/2409749/outside-cycling-deaths-2020">Outside Magazine</a>. </p><p>Many urbanists think city dwellers would be better off if some of the temporary changes made to streetscapes became permanent. And at least in some cities, that's happening. </p><p>Seattle <a href="https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2020/05/07/2020-bike-investments-to-accelerate-including-20-miles-of-stay-healthy-streets-to-become-permanent-in-seattle/">announced in May</a> that at least 20 miles of its Stay Healthy Streets would remain closed to car traffic permanently. Austin City Council decided in September to <a href="https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/local/austin-congress-temporary-bike-lanes-approved/269-9ca3b110-af52-40bd-836c-0e4125438944">keep protected bike lanes</a> established in the city in June, and <a href="https://www.wcvb.com/article/boston-announces-plans-for-permanent-bike-bus-lanes/34040602">Boston is doing the same</a>, replacing traffic barrels with permanent posts on several downtown streets. </p><p>But temporary measures don't need to become permanent to be successful. Whereas before, any new project had to surmount all types of hurdles and secure funding before becoming a reality, this moment has introduced experimentation - affording cities and residents the ability to test-drive infrastructure overhauls without committing completely. </p><p>To Combs, the US has always been a follower rather than an innovator in planning, and this new era of experimentation may finally change that. </p><p>"There are some very important lessons for the field of transport planning and engineering in that we can actually learn by doing - we don't have to wait for there to be a standard and a precedent," Combs said. "We can actually experiment.</p><p>"And that, I think - I hope - is part of the paradigm shift for transport planning."</p>

The US wasn't equipped for 2020's cycling boom. Its failures stem from a century of leaving bikes behind.

Some were blips during the early, frenzied, this-is-going-to-be-a-tough-three-months stage of the outbreak - like baking sourdough bread. Others have stuck around, as evidenced by the huge number of people who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cycling-boom-us-streets-infrastructure-bike-lanes-history-united-states-2020-12">started biking</a> when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fnew-york-city-subway-is-low-risk-for-coronavirus-transmission-study-says-11601388000">public transit got scary</a> and never stopped. </p><p>You can count me in that camp. I always rode around New York for exercise and transport, but Covid kicked that into high gear. Even with a vaccine coursing through my veins and the virus beginning (hopefully) to recede soon, my bike has remained my default way of getting most places. I'd like to keep it that way. </p><p>But moving through the city by bike has its downsides. Even with a beefy lock, you can never be certain that your bike will be where you left it. You're always committing to riding home, lest you become <em>that person</em> jamming their bike onto a packed subway car. And, unless you're Lance Armstrong, you're going to arrive places tired and sweaty. </p><p>This all may be fine for some people. But I know that if I want to make two-wheeled commuting a daily routine, I'm going to need to consider options aside from my trusty road bike. </p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85689494" hostid="261"></div><p>I figured a folding e-bike - compact, maneuverable, and with plenty of electric oomph to aid my puny human legs - would solve these problems and make the perfect long-term commuter. </p><p><a href="https://gocycle.com/">Gocycle</a>, a British maker of high-end folding <keyword id="11963830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="e-bikes" source="Orion">e-bikes</keyword>, loaned me one of its new <a href="https://gocycle.com/us/webstore/gocycle-g4iplus/gocycle-g4i-carbon-wheel-red-fbl/">G4i+</a> models so I could put that hypothesis to the test. I spent two weeks in July commuting from my apartment in Queens to Insider's downtown Manhattan office - and now I never want to go back to commuting on a normal bike. </p><h2>High design, peak convenience</h2><p>Having a bike that folded into a tidy little package when not in use was a game-changer for a host of reasons. And the $5,999 G4i+, Gocycle's latest and greatest model, collapses quickly and effortlessly.</p><p>All you need to do is unlock two sturdy main latches: one that lets the handlebars fold downward and another that allows the frame to fold in half down the middle. It's all cleverly held together by a little elastic band that hooks the handlebars to the frame. </p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="4500" width="3000" msid="85689496" hostid="261"></div><p>Every time I got to work, I folded the bike up in a matter of seconds and wheeled it into the office using its seat as a handle. The office building doesn't allow bikes, but the staff didn't seem to pay much mind when I would roll or carry the neatly folded-up G4i+ through the lobby. </p><p>Being able to easily bring a bike inside wherever I went was huge - especially when that bike was a flashy, expensive machine that didn't belong to me. Theft problem, solved. </p><p>The bike's compact folded size was a blessing the one time I wound up wanting to take the subway home after a tough workout, but that's not something I'd do every day. While the Gocycle is miles easier to take on the train than a conventional bike, it's a bit cumbersome to carry and lugging it up and down subway steps is no walk in the park. At 35.9 pounds, the carbon-fiber, aluminum, and magnesium G4i+ is lighter than many e-bikes, but it's not <em>that</em> light.</p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="2065" width="3000" msid="85689499" hostid="261"></div><p>The G4i+ can fold up even smaller when needed. Removing the seat and a pedal - both of which have their own spots for storage in the frame - gives the bike an even more compact footprint. At home, the folded-up G4i+ could comfortably fit in a corner and stay out of the way, making it loads more apartment-friendly than some of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rad-power-bikes-radmission-1-review-best-affordable-e-bikes-2021-1">bulkier</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super73-s1-review-electric-e-bike-post-lockdown-commuting-cycling-2020-7">e-bikes</a> I've tested. </p><p>Plus, the bike's thoughtful enclosed drivetrain eliminates the risk of smearing chain grease on a pant leg or piece of furniture when maneuvering it around. </p><h2><strong>Folding e-bike vs. New York streets</strong></h2><p>All that convenience doesn't come at the expense of ride quality. And the G4i+ has everything you'd expect from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/serial-1-e-bike-review-harley-davidson-electric-commuter-cty-2020-12">high-end e-bike</a> and then some. </p><p>A top speed of 20 mph was plenty for getting places fast, passing slower bikers, and keeping up with cars on less bike-friendly streets. The bike's petite front-hub motor made getting up and over steep bridges a breeze. If I ever showed up to work sweaty, it was because of the 90-degree heat, not because I was huffing and puffing on my ride over.</p><p>An estimated range of up to 50 miles was more than enough for my 20-mile round-trip commute. And although I never fully tested the Gocycle's battery capacity, I never came close to running out of energy by charging overnight regularly. </p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85689500" hostid="261"></div><p>The G4i+ has both pedal-assistance and a twist throttle. I stuck with the pedal-assist most of the time. Like many pricier e-bikes, the G4i+ delivers power using a torque sensor, meaning that the more effort you put into pedaling, the more electric assistance you get. That makes for a natural-feeling ride. </p><p>The bike also automatically shifts between three gears depending on the effort a rider puts in. That took some getting used to, but I eventually got the hang of it. I liked having a bit more control over shifting, so I tended toward changing speeds manually using a gear selector on the handlebars. </p><p>Pairing the G4i+ to Gocycle's app allows riders to choose from a few different ride modes or create their own, though I never felt the need to switch out of the default "City" setting. Turn your phone on its side, and the app doubles as a dashboard display that shows speed, battery level, miles traveled, and other key data, which was a nice touch. The bike comes with an elastic phone holder on the handlebars that's surprisingly secure. </p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85689501" hostid="261"></div><p>A person riding a folding bike sometimes looks like a bear on a tricycle, and I came in concerned that the small-looking G4i+ wouldn't fit me. But I found the Gocycle remarkably comfortable, even for a tall person. I could ride for long distances without feeling fatigued in my wrists or neck. </p><h2>The ultimate urban commuter</h2><p>The Gocycle G4i+ is a fantastic, well-made e-bike that made moving through New York exceptionally quick and convenient for the two weeks I spent with it. It folded up easily for storage in the office and at home and alleviated many of the inconveniences that keep even the most enthusiastic bikers from riding more. </p><p>Plus, it looks great and is packed full of clever touches that show just how much the company labored over every detail. There's an allen wrench slotted under the seat for on-the-fly adjustments, for example. And the center stand is contoured to the underside of the frame so it folds out of view. A slick LED light bar up front with multiple brightness and strobe settings made me feel safe riding at night.</p><div type="image" title="Gocycle G4i+ folding e-bike" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85689502" hostid="261"></div><p>The main downside, of course, is the bike's cost. $6,000 could buy you a fleet of decent human-powered bikes, and more than a few solid battery-powered ones. But if this $6,000 bike is the one that gets you to ride daily or drive less, it could be well worth the money in gas savings and other <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword> costs. </p><p>Plus, Gocycle offers a <a href="https://gocycle.com/us/webstore/">full lineup</a> of folding bikes, and although they're all expensive, some can be had for thousands less than the G4i+. </p><p>The Gocycle G4i+ was, sadly, more of a blip in my pandemic routine than a mainstay. But once commuting becomes more of a thing and there are more places to go, I may just have to pick one up. Or at least, something like it. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Charge, a British startup now owned by Cannondale, wants to simplify the bike-buying process. </li><li>I tested out their high-end model, a $2,300 behemoth designed to handle off-road trails. </li><li>It's the most fun I've had on two wheels since childhood, but just not a feasible purchase for my current living situation. </li><li>If you have the space — and funds — it might be the best socially distant recreation option possible, and it's actually in stock (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-states-is-running-out-of-bikes-during-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-5">unlike many other bikes)</a>. </li></ul><p>There's no real reason to own an electric bike as tough as a tank, that glides over asphalt as easily as gravel or mud and bounds up hills with no struggle.</p><p>But, if you can afford it, there's also no reason <em>not</em> to.</p><p>At $2,300, the <keyword id="9888226" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="charge-xc">Charge XC</keyword> — the heaviest duty member of the British company's three-bike lineup meant to have a choice for everyone — is a seemingly perfect fit for the weekend warrior or a cycle-curious explorer. It's also great for a slightly out-of-shape journalist like me, who just wants to tear up some dirt trails to blow off steam.</p><p>I took out a fully loaded version of the bike for spins around New York City to see how well it weathered rough asphalt, bumpy bike lanes, gravel paths, muddy trails, and any other obstacles I could find.</p><h2><strong>Unlike some new <keyword id="24462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bikes">bikes</keyword>, the Charge XC was a breeze to put together — even in a tiny apartment</strong></h2><p>The box is heavy but has punched-out handles like any good box should. It also has handy pull cords that rip along perforated edges, easily exposing the bike and its parts.</p><p>A cardboard stand — no plastic here! — helped keep the bike upright while installing the front wheel and other parts. Still, it's an easier job with two people.</p><p>"A gigantic challenge in design, really more than the bike, was to get rid of all the plastic, the zip ties, all the foam," Charge founder Nick Larsen told me in an interview. "That might seem like something that would be normal to most people — but if you saw the equivalent of what a bike would normally come like, it was a huge undertaking."</p><p>From the packaging to the integrated battery, the sleek design made it clear how much thought went into the bike's creation. Larsen told me many of his design peers from school ended up at Dyson, the legendary British design shop, and the inspiration for <keyword id="9888227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="charge-bikes">Charge bikes</keyword> was closely linked. </p><div type="image" title="Charge XC electric review bike" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77949934" hostid="261"></div><p>"Bikes are a little bit like computers used to be," he said. "They're complicated to understand and a bit of an intimidating purchase. That's what computers were before Apple and others made the user experience more simple."</p><p>Within 30 minutes, it was ready to ride (but still needed to charge). Within a few hours I was ready go go explore — and had some hills in mind to put it through the gauntlet.</p><h2><strong>First impression: the smoothest ride I've been on in a while</strong></h2><p>This thing is like riding a motorcycle no matter how high the seat is set thanks to a 60 mm handlebar rise. The handlebars are also incredibly wide, which is nice for off-road control, but I was hesitant to squeeze through the gaps in traffic road bikes can go without a problem, but was never uncomfortably hunched over.</p><p>And when the motor kicks in, it's smooth sailing. It has three settings, from "eco" mode's slight boost up to the near-whiplash-inducing "sport" mode. </p><div type="image" title="Charge XC electric review bike" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77949936" hostid="261"></div><p>I set off with two targets in mind: the oldest bike path in the United States, and the only forest in Brooklyn.</p><p>First up was Ocean Parkway. This bustling road was designed by the architectural duo behind Central Park and other famous US green spaces, and has two grassy malls flanking its lanes from Prospect Park all the way down to Coney Island. It was one of the first true "highways" in the United States, and a few years after its construction it also became home to the first true bike path in the country — it's only seen a spattering of maintenance since.</p><p>Jokes aside, the bike lane is notorious for bumps after years of water, ice, tree roots and other forces have buckled the asphalt. Charge XC's massive Goodyear tires and fork suspension handled the rough riding with ease.</p><p>Its plastic fenders also helped keep disgusting gutter water from splashing up at intersections. However, for all their utility, the fenders shake like crazy over the smallest bumps, rattling loudly nearly constantly — and I'm not the first person to notice it. These seemed easily removable, and are a small part of otherwise perfect bike.</p><div type="image" title="Charge XC electric review bike" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77949938" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Up hills and through mud where the bike truly shined</strong></h2><p>The Charge XC isn't a mountain bike, despite having a frame that easily could. Its numerous warnings against attempting jumps seemed funny at first, until I realized just how tempting it would be to shoot for a dangerous amount of air.</p><p>The bike didn't skip a beat over loose gravel or puddles of mud that would be impossible to find traction on with many other bikes. Even on steep up-hill climbs, I lost balance before its motor ever spun the back wheel. With so much power underfoot, it's easy to forget to change gears sometimes too.</p><p>Down the other side of a hill is where things got interesting. I'd never used disc brakes before this very moment. I'm here to testify that the hydraulic disc brakes on the Charge work instantaneously, and well. In hindsight the near incident was hilarious, and goes to show no matter how much energy the 55-pound bike and its rider can muster, things can stop quickly.</p><p>After an hour or so of taking the bike on every different earthen path I could find in the park's winding ravine, I felt the bike had been adequately put through the paces.</p><p>It was when I got home that I realized an important qualifier for potential customers: the weight. It took all of my effort to get the bike up a flight of stairs, and might be more suited to someone on the ground floor or with a garage. (Though to be fair, most electric bikes are expensive and a lighter frame wouldn't be as tough.)</p><p>"Compared to an analog bike it's heavy," Larsen told me, "but what you benefit from is range and performance."</p><p>He wasn't wrong: my 90-minute, eight-mile adventure had only used up about 10% of the bikes battery, according to the convenient heads-up display.</p><div type="image" title="Charge XC electric review bike" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77949941" hostid="261"></div><p>And even despite the struggle to take it up my building's stairs, the folding pedals and swiveling handlebars made for easy storage in an otherwise tiny apartment.</p><p>The bikes are in stock, too — or at least they were when I spoke to Larsen in late August —  a major selling point these days as manufacturers rush to build bikes as fast as they can to keep up with an absolute explosion in demand.</p><p>"We've got stock. They offer all the benefits of a normal human-powered bike, but with considerably less sweating and much more utility. Plus, for certain people, they can replace car trips, cutting down on congestion and curbing harmful emissions. </p><p>But one major hurdle to widespread e-bike adoption remains: cost. </p><p>Although some manufacturers are taking it upon themselves to sell low-cost e-bikes - Rad Power Bikes' new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rad-power-bikes-radmission-1-review-best-affordable-e-bikes-2021-1">$1,099 RadMission 1</a> is an example - by and large, high-quality e-bikes are out of reach for the average consumer. A new proposal from two House Democrats aims to change that. </p><p>This month, Reps. Jimmy Panetta and Earl Blumenauer - of California and Oregon, respectively - introduced the <a href="https://panetta.house.gov/media/press-releases/congressman-panetta-introduces-e-bike-act-encourage-use-electric-bicycles-and">Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment (E-BIKE) Act</a>, a tax-credit program that aims to spur e-bike sales.</p><p>The act would cover 30% of the cost of a new e-bike up to $1,500 and would apply to new bikes that cost $8,000 or less. The idea, they said, is to encourage people to take fewer car trips and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint. </p><p>"E-bikes are not just a fad for a select few, they are a legitimate and practical form of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> that can help reduce our carbon emissions," said Rep. Panetta in a statement. Electric bikes could get much cheaper under a new proposal from two House Democrats

The price reduction - Peloton's second in one year - comes as sales slow after a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/complete-guide-to-the-rise-of-the-digital-fitness-industry-2021-8">pandemic-fueled exercise-bike frenzy</a>. </p><p>The Bike is Peloton's lower-cost model, slotting below the $2,495 Bike+. When Peloton introduced the latter in late 2020, it slashed the Bike's price from $2,245 to $1,895. </p><p>The Bike can now be had for $39 per month with a 39-month financing plan, down $10 per month. The new pricing extends to all of Peloton's markets. 0% APR financing is also available. </p><p>In a press release, the company chalked up the price drop to making its pricey exercise equipment <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-weigh-in-impact-of-pelotons-420-million-precor-acquisition-2020-12?r=fitness-lp">more attainable to consumers.</a></p><p>"Today, we announced our latest step in making Peloton more attainable by lowering the price of our original, award-winning <keyword id="11957091" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="peloton-bike" source="Orion">Peloton Bike</keyword> across all of our markets to $1,495," the company said. "We know price remains a barrier and are pleased to offer our most popular product at an attractive everyday price point."</p><p>Peloton rode the pandemic's home-workout wave to its first-ever profitable quarter in 2020. Sales of its sleek stationary bikes, treadmills, and exercise classes surged as the coronavirus kept people from gyms. The company, which went public in late 2019, saw its share price march steadily upward throughout 2020. </p><p>But revenue growth slowed in the fourth fiscal quarter, Peloton reported Thursday, and the company posted a net loss wider than expected. Peloton's share price plummeted as much as 11% in late trading following the <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword>.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-tread-safety-updates-after-injury-reports-2021-8">massive treadmill recall also strained its balance sheet</a>, but revenues are up more than 54% year-over-year. </p>

Peloton's flagship bike is now $400 cheaper

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I spent a few months tooling around on Rad Power Bikes' latest model: the RadMission 1. </li><li>At $1,099, the RadMission is the company's most affordable bike to date. </li><li>It's overall a great buy, even if it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of pricier bikes. </li></ul><p><keyword id="662112" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-bikes">Electric bikes</keyword> are <a href="https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2020/07/22/booms-gone-electric#.YBR9NFNKhQI">booming</a>, and for good reason. </p><p>They offer loads of advantages over other modes of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>: an e-bike can take you further than a normal bike and get you there faster. Depending on where you're going, it can be quicker than driving, and it doesn't come with the same environmental baggage or the need to find a parking spot. It can even be more convenient than public transit - and with COVID-19 still surging, <keyword id="930861" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="E-bikes">e-bikes</keyword> are a welcome alternative to subways and buses.</p><p>I already knew all of these things before Seattle-based <a href="https://www.radpowerbikes.com/">Rad Power Bikes</a> offered to send me one of its new <a href="https://www.radpowerbikes.com/products/radmission-electric-metro-bike">RadMission 1</a> models to review. </p><p>And yet, the utilitarian ride from one of the most popular e-bike companies in the country further convinced me that an electric bicycle is the best way to get around a city. Not least because the RadMission proved that you can get all of the myriad benefits of e-bike ownership - and some extra perks - at a welcoming price point. </p><div type="image" title="RadMission 3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80653442" hostid="261"></div><p>Rad Power Bikes first unveiled the RadMission 1 last summer with a starting price of $999, but it has since bumped up the price to $1,099. Already known for its affordable cargo and commuter bikes - ranging in price from around $1,200 to $1,700 - the company upped the ante by cramming a whole lot of handy features into a bike that's even cheaper than its existing lineup. </p><h2>The specs</h2><p>The RadMission comes in two frame options: a step-through model and a standard version. The former is meant for riders between 5'2'' and 6'2'', while the latter is designed for taller riders from 5'10'' to 6'4''. At 6'1", I opted for the standard model, which proved fairly comfy.  </p><p>It gets its power from a 500-watt motor in the rear hub, which allows for a claimed top speed of 20 mph. There are four levels of pedal assist, which you toggle between using a control panel - no screens here. There's also a twist throttle. </p><div type="image" title="RadMission 10" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80653444" hostid="261"></div><p>Range, as with all e-bikes, depends heavily on the level of pedal assistance you choose and how hard you push the bike. The manufacturer estimates it to be 25 miles on the low end and upward of 45 miles on the high end. </p><p>I didn't attempt to max out the range, but I can say that the battery held up excellently over the course of multiple long and short rides, even on frigid New York days, and I didn't find myself topping up the battery too often. </p><h2><strong>The ride</strong></h2><p>The RadMission 1 transformed the way I got around New York for the three months I had it. Although I had many fewer places to go than normal (you can guess as to why) when I did venture out, it was often by way of the RadMission. </p><p>The bike was great for long jaunts across the city to meet family and friends, as well as short trips around my neighborhood that I wanted to make even shorter. I was elated when I found I could speed from my apartment in Queens down to Brooklyn's Prospect Park in around 40 minutes - a trip that Google Maps said would take around an hour by bike, and even longer on the subway. (Take that!) </p><div type="image" title="RadMission 6" height="2015" width="2500" msid="80653446" hostid="261"></div><p>Although the RadMission probably isn't quick enough to satisfy any speed demons out there, it was perfectly adequate for my needs. The highest level of pedal assistance got me places quickly and allowed me to keep up decently well with traffic, which helped me feel safe and catch more green lights. The RadMission's airy tires - which are fatter than those on a road bike but skinnier than the motorcycle-like rubbers found on some other e-bikes - helped soak up some imperfections on New York's streets and gave me the confidence to lean into corners.</p><p>Ergonomic grips are a nice touch, especially for riders like me who tend to get wrist pain on longer, bumpier trips. </p><div type="image" title="RadMission 8" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80653449" hostid="261"></div><p>The RadMission's single gear didn't leave me wanting on steep hills, given that the electric motor is always there to give you a boost. It can take a bit of work to get going from a stop, as there's a momentary lag between when you start pedaling and when the motor kicks in - but that's typical of bikes in this price range. </p><p>When it came time to haul the RadMission in and out of my building, I found it reasonably easy to lug around. Weighing in at 48 lbs, the RadMission isn't a featherweight by any means, but it's a solid 15 lbs lighter than Rad Power Bikes' other models. It wasn't much more challenging to maneuver around my apartment than a normal bike, and its relatively slim profile meant I could stick it in a corner without too much fuss. </p><div type="image" title="RadMission 11" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80653452" hostid="261"></div><p>Some other nice touches: Rad Power Bikes thoughtfully includes things that make e-biking safer and more convenient, like a bright headlamp, a rear brake light, and a bell that's integrated into the left brake lever. Braze-ons on the head tube and seat stays allow customers to mount an array of different racks and accessories the manufacturer offers.</p><p>Overall, the RadMission's riding experience is solid. It's not as balanced or buttery smooth as the ride you'd get from an expensive e-bike with more advanced components, but it's not competing with those bikes. The RadMission gets the job done with no complaints.  </p><h2><strong>Final thoughts</strong></h2><p>From riding a few <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super73-s1-review-electric-e-bike-post-lockdown-commuting-cycling-2020-7">other e-bikes</a> - and seething as e-bike riders blew past me on my non-motor-assisted rides - I knew that electric bikes were a fantastic way to get around a city. And the fact that now you can now get a name-brand bike that feels sturdy, rides nice, and has decent upgradeability for just $1,100 only makes them more attractive in my book. </p><p>Cost is relative, of course, and I'm not saying that everyone can or should buy an e-bike. But let's put it this way: the RadMission costs hundreds less than a years' worth of New York subway rides. It and other bikes like it have the potential to democratize and expand e-bike ownership, helping to curb CO2 emissions, reduce congestion, and bridge some of the transportation gaps endemic to cities.</p><div type="image" title="RadMission 5" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80653454" hostid="261"></div><p>No doubt the RadMission doesn't have the fancy components or bells and whistles of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/serial-1-e-bike-review-harley-davidson-electric-commuter-cty-2020-12">higher-end bikes</a>. </p><p>It has a single-speed, not an internally-geared hub or automatic transmission. It has mechanical disc brakes, not hydraulic ones. It has a hub motor, rather than a mid drive. It has a control panel with physical buttons and LEDs, rather than a display. And it has a somewhat unsightly nest of cables up front, rather than a sleek system of internal routing. </p><p>But none of that affects the amount of utility or fun you can get out of the RadMission. And if those design choices mean that Rad Power Bikes can sell the model for $1,100 as opposed to $1,500 or $2,000 or $3,000 or more, all the better. </p><p>Rad Power Bikes could have added a more premium model to its lineup with some of the snazzy features mentioned above, and it probably would have found a market for it. So it's nice to see that the company is instead moving in the other direction to make its products even more accessible. I hope other e-bike makers come along for the ride.</p>
