<ul><li><keyword id="3269053" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rapido">Rapido</keyword> is aiming to achieve at least 1.5x growth than last fiscal. It is the only mobility company that is eyeing profits this year. </li><li>Rapido has already seen 25% of its business bouncing back. </li><li>Pavan Guntupalli, Co-founder, Rapido, talks to us about the story behind launching the brand, its growth, and mantra behind its road to profitability. </li></ul>The lockdown impacted most businesses across the globe. Some shut down and some learnt how to evolve with the changing tides. Home-grown brand Rapido, a Bike-Taxi service provider, saw its revenue plunge in the first two months after COVID hit the country and people were locked inside the four walls of their houses. With it, mobility came to a complete standstill. However, it soon saw a silver lining in June and July as 25% of its business bounced back. One of the reasons behind this demand was that people started avoiding public places and transport. Although, according to Rapido, 80% of India still doesn’t own private vehicles and due to COVID, they needed a safe and secure commute. This presented an opportunity in adversity for Rapido. Explaining why the brand’s demand came back, Pavan Guntupalli, Co-founder, Rapido, said, “Customers became aware that bike taxi is a more open and personalized way for intra-city travel. The customer has an advantage of less exposure to any infection due to his/her limited interaction with the captain (driver) and less touch points.” People also started renting its bikes for longer commutes. “Our average distance has suddenly changed, earlier people were using us for the last mile 3-5km but suddenly because of unavailability of regular public transport, our average distance has increased to 35% in some cities and overall, we saw 25% increase. Now people are using us for home to home travel and not just for last mile connectivity. Somewhere in December, we are hoping to come back to 100% of our business as before,” said Guntupalli. Shifting gears Rapido was growing at around 15% month-on-month from the last 3 years before the pandemic-infused lockdown hit India. It also doubled its presence from 50 cities to 100 in 6 months. Post lockdown, it had to shift its business model from offering bikes and taxies from consumers to distributors. Around 92% of its business came from bike and taxi model (intra-city mobility) and 8% came from logistics (essential supplies). Now, 30% of its total business comes from logistics and 70% from bike taxis. So, it decided to pivot its focus on accelerating the existing logistics business model by following a few initiatives such as delivering essentials at home, supporting the government to resolve supply-chain challenges, etc. “Rapido has been operating delivery services for e-commerce companies for close to 2 years now namely Zomato, Swiggy, Delhivery.com, Myntra, Eat.Fit. SuprDaily, Mapprr, 24*7 Stores, Kalerya, Bharatpe. During the lockdown, we amped up the existing Rapido-Delivery services to provide for the delivery of essential goods and partnered with major online companies like Big Bazaar, Big Basket and Spencer’s for delivery of essential goods,” shared Guntupalli. Building on the demand for logistics further, Rapido launched Rapido Local, a person-to-person delivery service. “Rapido Store is a convenient tool for offline and online businesses to help them reach out and deliver products to their customers in these challenging times. Rapido Store helps local businesses take care of multiple customer deliveries simultaneously in the most affordable and trusted manner. The service is currently operational in Bangalore &amp; Vijayawada and will scale to all cities Rapido is present in,” explained Guntupalli. Marketing Strategy and Understanding Consumers To gain its consumers' trust in a volatile market, Rapido introduced Safety Shields that helped consumers to maintain a safe distance from the driver or Captain, as Rapido calls them. <div type="image" title="rapido safety shields" msid="78221466" hostid="261"></div> Guntupalli said, “The Shield weighs around 400 gms -- it is a lightweight, PVC board that is attached to the Captain’s back like a rucksack. The shield covers the Captain’s body and makes for a considerable distance between the customer and our Captain. Apart from the usual measures, like using masks, sanitizers and the ArogyaSetu App, that we have taken, we felt the Safety Shields will be an added measure of safety during the rides.” It also tweaked its marketing strategy to increase awareness about the safety measures they followed. Its strategy is multi-lingual and regional. “We are trying to help change consumer behaviour towards safety, by helping them embrace the new norms through best practices when it comes to precautions, like bringing their own helmet, and avoiding stepping out. We also ensure that we leverage push notifications, SMS, emailers, in-app training videos, social media campaigns and marketing campaigns in various languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, to communicate regularly on our company updates and initiatives. We recently launched our first-ever video campaign, #PromiseofProtection, that showcases Rapido’s commitment to the safety and protection of its users, through an understanding of different relationships in our lives. In the initial phase of COVID, we launched a fundraiser for the Captains to provide them with the support they needed to weather the difficult times,” said Guntupalli. Goals for this fiscal As we inch towards normalcy and people have started stepping out, Rapido is aiming to achieve at least 1.5x growth over last fiscal. It is the only mobility company that is eyeing profits this year. According to PGA Labs, bike taxi service is now a $150 million market, growing at 20% month-over-month. In India 300 million people commute every day out of which only 1% happens via apps. It is estimated that bike taxis in India have the potential to create 5+ million livelihood opportunities, generating a revenue of $10 billion. With rapid urbanisation and smart status of cities, bike-taxi is becoming the future of intra-city transport. Due to COVID, they are also avoiding public transport. As a result, Rapido has become the third largest ride sharing platform in the country that sees around 10 million transactions in a month. Now, after securing a leadership position in the Bike Taxi ecosystem across cities, Rapido’s next focus area is to use technology to propel newer models that will help serve end users as well as businesses in the post COVID world. However, vehicle ownership in India is less. Hardly 18-20% people own a vehicle, that means 80% people still don’t have their own vehicle. When the pandemic hit, a huge problem statement was the need for a safe and secure commute. This became an opportunity in adversity for Rapido, as it saw a 25% spike in the month of June and July. Where it all began Rapido introduced bike sharing in our country in 2015. The product was built to bridge the last mile connectivity gaps. People in Tier II, III and beyond towns and cities have limited public transport solutions, some are not even available late in the evenings, making it difficult to look for an affordable option to travel within the city and getting shared autos are a hassle especially if you are a woman. However, being a first mover has its own set of challenges. Rapido was dealing with both cultural and social challenges. People did not feel comfortable sitting behind a stranger. So to woo consumers, Rapido took a quirky route. Guntupalli said, “We took a multilingual approach for our consumer outreach. The idea was to reach larger sets of audiences across Tier I, II and III cities and build affinity with the message. We worked on short, quirky videos that are a trend among tech-savvy millennials. To make its women customers feel safer, Rapido masks their phone numbers from its captains. It was also the first bike taxi company in India to introduce insurance for both customers and Captains from Day 1. Rapido is now present in 100 cities serving over 10 million customers with 15 lakh+ registered Captains. It is the 3rd largest ride sharing platform in the country with 10 million transactions a month and has recorded over 25 million app downloads.

On top of it, its results for most of the months for the current fiscal year are delayed again. Sources told IANS that the company, which has sacked thousands of employees to date and has taken deeper cuts, is still unable to achieve profitability at group level amid mounting losses. In October after firing 2,500 employees and consolidating its business in the country, Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business, had said that "these measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023". At a group level, BYJU's had said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". However, this appears impossible now with the company still struggling to stem growing losses. Last week, the edtech major laid off another 15 per cent of its employees, or more than 1,000 people, mainly from its engineering teams, as the company continues phased layoffs to remain growth-oriented in a global economic meltdown. BYJU's to miss March 2023 deadline for group level profitability, results delayed again

Jammu, Apr 15 () Police in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district on Wednesday set up a special team called "Ghatak" to crack the whip on those who are violating the lockdown in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases, officials said. Fresh guidelines were issued by the territorial government on Wednesday for enforcing the second phase of the coronavirus lockdown, with the Union home ministry barring all kinds of public transport and prohibiting opening of public places till May 3. Riding on motor-bikes, the ten-member Ghatak team led by Inspector Suraj Pathania is checking slums, places of migrant labourers, hamlets and other places in the cities to catch hold of those violating lockdown rules and are also educating people on social distancing in the border district. "We have setup a Ghatak team to crackdown on violators of lockdown. The team will book people for violations and take strict action against violators," Inspector Pathania told reporters. The team will ensure that no one breaks the lockdown rules, he said. Police have also come up with a unique initiative, the first of its kind in the Union Territory, by launching a mobile sanitizer vehicle to shield its police personnel from getting infected by the deadly disease. The vehicle will also be pressed into service for the public in view of growing cases of COVID-19, officials said. The mobile sanitiser vehicle will be used for sanitising police personnel deployed on the frontline at quarantine centres, high-risk zones, border police posts and other check posts. Police personnel manning the streets during the COVID-19 lockdown are at high risk of contracting the deadly virus and the vehicle is specifically designed for catering to the forces on duty, they added. For the benefit of public, the specialised vehicle will be used at vegetable markets, outside government ration depots, banks, LPG refilling stations, main bazaars and at other places of essential services, they added. People will get sanitized with the help of high-grade showers installed in the vehicle fitted with a drum containing disinfectant solution, the officials further said. AB HDA

I entwined my fingers with his and looked out the window at the wild grass, willing myself to separate fact from feeling. I felt scared, but that didn't mean we were doomed. <h2>But as we drove home in an almost peaceful silence while the kids slept in the backseat, a truth appeared like a deer in a clearing: I didn't want to return to the way things were.</h2>I didn't want to drop the kids off in two separate places, board a train, and spend hours a day commuting to an office job. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I'd been stressed, but I'd also watched my son ride his bike without training wheels and seen my daughter stand unassisted for the first time. In the car, I began toying with the idea of starting my own business. By the time we pulled into our driveway, I was jotting my company name onto a napkin. In May, I spent my daughter's naptime emailing friends and former colleagues to let them know I was doing independent content marketing consulting. When my alter-egos piped up to criticize me or express doubt in my ideas, I thanked them for sharing and kept going, anyway. I got a few projects for June, and so I could do them, I sent my son back to private preschool and hired a babysitter for my daughter (privileges that did not escape me). By late July, I had more business than I could handle. Take that, Hopeless Bag Lady. But how would I work if Santiago's school went remote and the baby's daycare closed due to COVID-19? When our district announced kindergarten would begin in-person, I was relieved. But then, worry cropped up again when I awoke one late-summer morning. What if the kids get the virus? Worry Wart shouted. What if I get it? We'll die and the kids will be orphans! I jumped out of bed. Quiet! I said in my mind, as if addressing a room of unruly children. I hear you. Now, let's go outside. I walked through our neighborhood while my family slept. As I passed pine trees and flower gardens, I mentally ticked off a list of facts: Local positivity rates and hospitalizations were down, treatment had improved, and the death rate was plummeting. But what if infection rates go up? Worry Wort prodded. Then, we'll figure it out, I shot back. I thought, then, of my great-grandmother Blanche Brodie, who was bedridden with encephalitis from the Spanish Flu in 1918. Her doctors thought she would die, but she lived to raise my grandmother and help raise my mother. My wedding band had belonged to her, and as I rounded the corner toward my house, I looked at the glittering diamond purchased for her marriage during the Great Depression. If she got through a global pandemic, a depression, and two world wars, my family could get through this. <div type="image" title="Megan Feldman Bettencourt" height="1458" width="1944" msid="78579534" hostid="261"></div>In mid-August, I brought Santiago to his first day of kindergarten. "I'm shy!" he told me suddenly, grabbing my hand and shrinking back from the other families. Sensing an opportunity to share with him what I continued to learn myself, I crouched down and looked into his hazel eyes. "You feel shy, like everyone does on the first day at school," I said. "But that doesn't mean you are shy." He nodded, donned his new animal-print mask and gave me a hug. Instead, he quit.Later that day, he called his younger brother Ian, who was working in Manhattan at a small public relations firm.Shep told his brother - who he knew was also unhappy at work - that he'd quit his job, and dared him to do the same.Ian, then 23, called his brother back about five minutes later to report that he'd followed suit.Though the brothers were both out of work, they weren't quite falling without parachutes. They had a business idea in their back pockets - and now they'd finally have time to pursue it.During a 1997 trip to Anguilla, where their parents, who were travel journalists, were on assignment, Shep and Ian had started talking about creating a high-end necktie company that represented "the finer things in life."After consuming a few drinks at the hotel bar one night, they ended up telling the resort's general manager about their idea."We didn't know how to do it," Shep said. "The hotel manager literally pulled out the New York City yellow pages. We started calling neck tie manufacturers. That's how it all started."But when they got back to New York, they briefly put the idea on hold.That was, until they quit their jobs the following year.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Shep and Ian Murray</div></div></div>Once they were able to start pursuing this dream in earnest, it was time to break the news to friends and family."Everyone thought we were crazy for leaving our respectable jobs to go try something new," Shep says. "My girlfriend, who is now my wife, was not happy."When they first started their company - which would eventually become Vineyard Vines, the preppy clothing brand that's now worth close to $1 billion, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-vineyardvines-m-a-idUSKCN0Y722K">according to Reuters</a> - the brothers didn't receive "any money from anybody," says Shep.But they had a plan and they hit the ground running.They bought an old Jeep and a Ford Bronco with their last couple of paychecks and applied for as many credit cards as possible while they still had credit. Cash advances from the new credit cards helped to fund Vineyard Vines in the beginning. They used contacts at their old firms to make connections in the fashion and design world. Soon, they accrued an inventory of ties."Nobody was really wearing ties at the time, unless they were going to a wedding or a graduation," Ian says. "We thought, people aren't wearing ties because they're boring. But we used that to our advantage."To make neckties more appealing to more people - especially young, preppy New Englanders - their idea was to create a product line with whimsical and colorful patterns that "could spark conversations."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Vineyard Vines</div></div></div>To build up their brand, the Murray brothers took an outdoorsy approach to finding customers who would appreciate their preppy, nautical-themed ties. They would couch surf up and down the eastern seaboard, carrying backpacks brimming with merchandise. They'd bike and boat around beaches, hoping to find interested customers."We would sell a tie to anyone who would listen to us - and to people who wouldn't," Ian says.They also hawked ties at Junior League fairs, holiday boutiques, bazaars, and church fairs.While they did encounter some interested customers, the brothers also ran into a lot of naysayers as they embarked on their new <keyword id="6354910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Careers">careers</keyword>."People were always asking or thinking, 'How could you possibly give up these good jobs to do something seemingly stupid?'" says Shep. Ian adds: "People constantly talked down to us - but we took it as a challenge."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Shep and Ian Murray</div></div></div>Almost 20 years after starting their business, the brothers say they've never regretted quitting their "stable jobs." Shep explains that embarking on their new, entrepreneurial path was far more liberating than it was scary."People want job security and financial security," Shep says. "The idea of passing on something that was perfectly good didn't make sense. The idea of being able to go out and make money doing something as stupid as making neckties just seemed like a crazy thing. The reality is, we were really passionate about going out and making it on our own. We were really passionate about the products we made. We felt that if we were passionate, other people would be to."Ian says that despite the rough patches in the beginning, the brothers were able to rely on each other for support and found that their different skill sets often complemented one another. (Ian majored in English in college and had a background in PR, while Shep majored in business and had a background in advertising.)They also had a trick for keeping themselves motivated each day."It would be very easy to just sit on the couch and watch 'The Price is Right,'" Ian says. "So we would make a to-do list every morning, and would make sure every day we added ten things to it."Writing out their priorities allowed them to stay focused on their goals, even without the structure of the traditional 9-to-5 workday or office environment.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Shep and Ian Murray</div></div></div>The Murray brothers worked from home in the beginning, and later began renting larger office spaces in Connecticut, which is where they grew up.Its proximity to both New York City and Martha's Vineyard - the place they spent a lot of time as kids that inspired the name (and concept) of their brand - was another reason they chose to headquarter their company in Stamford.Today, there are 91 Vineyard Vines stores across the country. The company is on track to hire 650 employees (to boost its 2,600-person workforce), even as other brands with similar aesthetics face struggles this year, <a href="https://news.fastcompany.com/as-ralph-lauren-and-tommy-hilfiger-face-shrinking-revenues-vineyard-vines-expands-nationwide-4017879">as Fast Company reported</a>.Vineyard Vines has also expanded its product line to include bags, clothing, and swimwear for men, women, and children - but it's still known for its bright, playful prints."Our ties spoke to people," Ian says. "They said something about the person before they even opened their mouth. That's why so many people early on identified with our products. Really early on, we had George H.W. Bush wearing our bonefish ties, because he loved to go bone fishing, and we had John Kerry wearing our lacrosse ties, because he loved to play lacrosse."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Vineyard Vines</div></div></div>Looking back on their old careers, the brothers say they "miss nothing." They especially enjoy not having to wear suits anymore, or commuting to and from New York City every day.When they first made the leap, Shep says they "felt empowered by being our own bosses, regardless of what anyone else thought."He adds that his best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to "quit your job while you're young."He notes it's better to focus on pursuing your passion and gaining varied and interesting career experience than it is to suffer through a job that pays well or looks great on your résumé."Quality of life was more important to us than financial gain," Ian says. "That still is what drives us and drives our team. It's extremely rewarding to be around like-minded people."However, the brothers note that going for your dreams can get harder as you age. They see many peers in their 30s or 40s who feel unfilled in their corporate jobs, but are unable to leave due to financial obligations."You don't want to go to your grave saying you wish you had tried something," Shep says. "If you don't try it, how can you know if you're going to succeed? I think a lot of people measure success financially. If you do that, it doesn't necessarily always lead to a happier, more productive life. Make sure you do things for the right reasons."
