Think Initial Public Offers (IPOs) are a sure-shot, quickfire method to make a quick buck? If so, then investing in some of India's biggest IPOs to date would have created multiple millionaires. However, if the data is to be believed, 18 out of India's top 30 IPOs by way of size have failed to deliver on the returns front. Recent data from Capitalmind PMS suggests that of all the mega IPOs India has seen in the past 2 decades, only 12 IPOs i.e. stocks of 12 companies have delivered more returns that what you would have received, had you bought and held your investments in Nifty500(which invests in biggest 500 companies by market size). Infact, Paytm (54%), <keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword> (81%), General Insurance Corporation (2%) actually generated negative total returns to date. The only outliers in the list of top 10 IPOs were Zomato (listed in July 2021) and Coal India (listed in April, 2010), which managed to generate excess returns i.e. more than what was generated by Nifty500. While Zomato's total return to date, which is considered a comprehensive gauge of a stock's profitability, stands at 265%, Coal India total returns are a massive 443%. In these cases, had you simply bought and held the Nifty500 index for a similar duration, your returns would've been 73%, and 435% respectively. Also, 5 of the biggest IPOs India has ever seen (Bajaj Housing Finance, Bharti Hexacom, Brainbees, Ola Electric) have come in the last 2 years. In some cases, having stayed put in your index investments would have yielded you far better returns. Consider this, FSN E-Commerce, Nykaa's parent company, listed on the exchanges on November 2021. Its total returns till date have been 2%, while had you invested in Nifty500 index, your returns would've been 53%. Similarly, the total returns to date on Bandhan Bank's stock, which listed in March 2018, was a negative 43%. But, the index has delivered a whopping 163% returns during the same time. Not really </h2>It is impossible to overlook the sheer number of public offerings seen in the Indian markets over the past 2 years. Around 600 share sale offers have already hit the market since 2023. Out of these, 335 have come in this year, as of October 2024. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds. The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued. Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.

Do large IPOs guarantee large returns? Data suggests that 18 of India's biggest 30 IPOs did not generate solid returns

Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. Bharti Televentures UK has inked an agreement with Altice UK to acquire about 9.99 per cent stake of BT Group's issued capital imminently with the rest about 14.51 per cent of BT's share capital is to be acquired post regulatory clearances. Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi's Altice UK, the largest shareholder in BT, has been struggling with high debt. "Bharti Global, the international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, a leading Indian business group with world-class companies in telecoms, digital infrastructure and space communications, has reached an agreement to acquire an interest in 24.5 per cent of the issued share capital of BT Group plc from Altice UK," Bharti said in a release. Bharti hopes the investment will further help create new synergies in the telecom sector between India and UK in the areas of AI and <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> R&amp;D and core engineering among others, "offering great potential to collaborate on industry best practices and emerging technologies". It is pertinent to mention here that Bharti and BT have a relationship going back more than two decades. In 1997, BT acquired a 21 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel, and hence Bharti's latest move to acquire a 24.5 per cent chunk in the iconic British company marks a defining moment for the Indian telecom conglomerate. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises said: "Bharti and British Telecom (BT) have an enduring relationship going back more than two decades wherein BT owned 21 per cent stake along with two board seats in Bharti Airtel Limited from 1997-2001. Today marks a significant milestone in Bharti Group's history as we invest in BT - an iconic British company". Bharti's investment in BT aims to support the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties, the release said. It noted that during the recently concluded visit of UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy to India, the UK-India Technology Security Initiative was announced to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors including telecom. Sunil Mittal said: "This investment in BT aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties. Bharti's own record of owning and operating telecom and broadband networks around the world is underpinned by placing customers, digital innovation and operational efficiency at the heart of its business". Shravin Bharti Mittal, Managing Director of Bharti Global said: "We review global investment opportunities in the world of technology from digital infrastructure to software. BT is well known to us from the long association with Bharti, so we are pleased to have this opportunity to acquire a significant stake in the company." Bharti believes that BT is poised for leadership in the telecom arena, especially home broadband services, he added. Meanwhile, BT Group, in a separate statement said the investment from Bharti is a strong vote of confidence in the future of the British telecom carrier and its strategy. Allison Kirkby, Chief Executive of BT said: "We welcome investors who recognise the long-term value of our business, and this scale of investment from Bharti Global is a great vote of confidence in the future of BT Group and our strategy". Bharti to acquire about 24.5% stake in BT Group from Altice UK; deal estimated at $4 bn

The Board, which met to consider the company's capital raising plans, cleared rights issue price of ₹535 per fully paid-up equity share, including a premium of ₹530 per equity share. In a BSE filing, Airtel said that the "board approved the issuance of equity shares of face value of ₹5 each of the company on rights basis to eligible <keyword id="1125632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-shareholders" source="Orion">equity shareholders</keyword> of the company as on the record date (to be notified later), of an issue size of up to ₹21,000 crores". The rights entitlement ratio entails 1 equity share for every 14 equity shares held by eligible shareholders as on the record date. The terms of payment of issue price, envisage 25 per cent on application and balance in two more additional calls as may be decided by the Board or committee of the Board based on the company's requirements within an overall time-horizon of 36 months, Airtel said. "The promoter and promoter group of the company would collectively subscribe to the full extent of their aggregate rights entitlement," it said adding "they will also subscribe to any unsubscribed shares in the issue". The board has constituted a 'Special Committee of Directors' to decide the other terms and conditions of the issue including issue period and the record date. The Board of Directors at the meeting reviewed the industry scenario, business environment, financial and business strategy of the company and approved the the plan to raise further capital, Airtel said. Airtel’s board approves raising funds of up to ₹21,000 crore

Online auto classified platform <keyword id="1980082" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cartrade">CarTrade</keyword> Tech on Friday said it has raised Rs 900 crore from anchor investors ahead of its initial public offering, which opens on Monday. The company has decided to allocate 55,59,664 equity shares to anchor investors at Rs 1,618 apiece, valuing the transaction size to Rs 899.55 crore, according to a circular uploaded on the BSE website. Nomura, HSBC Global, Goldman Sachs, Jupiter India Fund, Elara India Opportunities Fund, Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance Company, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company, Bharti Axa Life Insurance Company, Axis Mutual Fund (MF), HDFC MF, Kotak MF and Sundaram MF are among the anchor investors. The initial share-sale will be entirely an offer for sale (<keyword id="883402" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="OFS">OFS</keyword>) of 18,532,216 equity shares. Among the investors participating in the OFS are -- CMDB II (22.64 lakh equity shares), Highdell Investment Ltd (84.09 lakh shares), Macritchie Investments Pte Ltd (50.76 lakh shares), and <keyword id="11723135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="springfield-venture-international">Springfield Venture International</keyword> (17.65 lakh shares). Currently, CMDB II holds 11.93 per cent stake in CarTrade, Highdell Investment owns 34.44 per cent stake, MacRitche Investment has 26.48 per cent shareholding, and Springfield Venture International holds 7.09 per cent stake in the company. The public issue, with a price band of Rs 1,585-1,618 a share, will open for subscription on August 9 and conclude on August 11. At the upper end of the price band, the <keyword id="6354763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo">IPO</keyword> is expected to mobilise Rs 2,998.51 crore. Half of the issue size has been reserved for qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), 35 per cent for retail investors and the remaining 15 per cent for non-institutional investors. Founded in 2009, CarTrade is backed by marquee investors -- <keyword id="6402698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="warburg-pincus">Warburg Pincus</keyword>, Temasek, JPMorgan and March Capital. The CarTrade platform allows customers to buy and sell used cars as well as new cars. The firm is a multi-channel auto platform with coverage and presence across vehicle types and value-added services through its brands -- CarWale, CarTrade, <keyword id="209119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shriram-Automall">Shriram Automall</keyword>, BikeWale, CarTrade Exchange, Adroit Auto and AutoBiz. The company's consumer platforms i.e. CarWale, CarTrade and BikeWale, collectively get 3.2 crore average unique visitors every month (during the three-month period ending March 31, 2021), and Shriram Automall and other auction platforms had 8,14,316 vehicles listed for auction during FY21. The company generates revenues from commission and fees from auctions and re-marketing services, online advertising solutions, lead generation, technology-based services to OEMs, dealers, banks and other financial institutions, and inspection and valuation services. CarTrade raises ₹900 crore from anchor investors ahead of its IPO, issue opens on Monday

The spectacular debut of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indigo">IndiGo</a> , India's biggest airline by market share, on the bourses on Tuesday, not only reflected investor’s confidence in India’s potential as one of the world's fastest growing aviation markets but a possible resurgence of the primary market after a prolonged lull. This was despite a premium valuation at around $4 billion (it is twice as valued compared with the combined valuation of peers Jet Airways and SpiceJet). 
 
For a perspective, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which runs the carrier, raised $453.52 million last month through its initial public offering, which was the largest IPO since telecom tower firm Bharti Infratel Ltd raised $750 million in December 2012. 
 
IndiGo’s blockbuster market entry is a sharp contrast to the debut of Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (that runs India’s largest cafe chain Cafe Coffee Day) as it struggled to sail through and revive hopes that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ipo+market">IPO market</a> in India is finally turning around. 
 
Last two years have been a dismal period for the primary market in the country, reflecting the lack of momentum that prevailed across the broader market prior to the Narendra Modi-led Indian government assumed power. 
 
The lacklustre history of the IPOs, launched in the last decade and underperformed, also proved to be a dampener for investors who have already been skeptical about the slow pace of structural reforms that are needed to revive market sentiments. 
 
Complex listing rules also pulled back companies from tapping the primary market to raise funds—till recently the IPO market was governed by archaic rules that have existed for decades. 
 In addition, companies, especially those in the booming technology sector, have been exploring alternative sources of finance. For example, while e-commerce major <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> raised more than $1billion from Private Equity investors over the last one year, its close competitor <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> raised close to $1billion. Ola, India’s leading taxi-hailing app, which raised roughly $650 million from Private Investors recently, is another example of next-generation technology-driven startups that are tapping the PE source of funding for growth. 
 
However, the prospects of the IPO market seem to be changing. More than a dozen companies have filed draft papers with markets regulator <a href="http://www.sebi.com/">SEBI</a> for public offers since the new government took charge at the Centre in May 2014. Besides, many companies, which scrapped their IPO plans earlier due to bad market conditions, have been keen to make another attempt to enter the capital markets. 
 
These translated in to a modest uptick in IPOs during 2015, after two years when the primary markets were almost dead. Though the money raised through IPOs this year is small compared with $8 billion raised in 2010, the last time Indian primary markets really took off. But, it is believed to be a trigger for more sizable IPOs going ahead. 
 
The renewed confidence of investors, especially FIIs, after the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Modi">Modi</a> government took over contributed to the revival of the secondary market—where investors trade previously issued securities—which peaked over a year since BJP came to power and thus provided fodder for an uptick of the primary market as well. 
 
Of course, the markets are seeing a correction—bench market indices BSE Sensex and Nifty lost more than 10% over two months—driven by the slower growth numbers reported by China. 
 
However, India’s long-term story remains intact as it can turn China’s pain into its gain as an alternative investment destination for large FIIs. 
India continues to be among the most favoured by emerging market investors given the country's strengthening macro fundamentals. Though concerns over the economy as well as cultural tolerance have risen recently, they haven't hampered investor sentiment significantly. 
 
Also, as indicated by the government’s move on Tuesday to further relax FDI norms in over 15 sectors, including defence, realty and broadcasting, the policy initiative to bring in structural reforms is still well on track. Therefore, the chances of a continued revival of the primary market are bright. 
 
The IPO activity is expected to gain more momentum driven by the enhanced need for the companies to go beyond the Private Equity route to raise capital for growth and expansion. Many companies and investors are also turning to the IPO route as a preferred option for generating liquidity. 
 
The renewed interest in IPOs is also driven by private-equity backed firms which are capitalising on the positive market sentiment to provide an exit for their investors. 
 
According to Dealogic, Indian companies have raised around $1.03 billion via IPOs so far this year, well above the $282 million for all of last year and $295 million in 2013. More companies in sectors such as banking and financial services, technology, logistics and pharma are expected to tap primary markets in the near future. 
 
While size of the IPOs raised in India remain relatively small compared with those seen in the US or other Asian financial capitals such as Hong Kong and Tokyo, the uptick in the primary market proves that activity seen by the secondary markets after May 2014 is not just an aberration and strengthens India’s status as a preferred investment destination amid shades of gloom elsewhere, including China.
