Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. India’s premier institution Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay moved up by ten spots to the 152th rank, according to <keyword id="2893769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-University-Rankings">QS University Rankings</keyword> 2020. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

With the increasing demand for artificial intelligence, automation and machine learning, <keyword id="222212" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Ropar">IIT Ropar</keyword> focuses on research facilities, majorly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects. It also has research labs and strong industrial partnerships. IIT Ropar has 13 female students for every 87 male students. India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

The recently released rankings unveiled the top 75 institutes in India for higher education. The first position was given to IIT-Bombay followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Among the top 10 institutions are seven IITs located in Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur, IISc Bengaluru, University of Hyderabad and the University of Delhi. Surprisingly, The only private institute to make it to the top 20 list was Birla Institute of Science and Technology As per the report, twenty out of seventy-five <keyword id="5111110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institution">Indian institution</keyword> have scored full marks for recruiting highly qualified staff with PhD degrees. Further, nine students scored 98.4 in paper per faculty, an indicator which assesses research productivity. Why specific rankings for India? QS India ranking is the second region-specific ranking by QS after China. The British organisation has recently decided to bring out country-specific rankings beginning with China, India, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. The region-specific rankings are a response to the increasing demand of information from within the nation rather than in the global context. India’s educational system has witnessed a massive change over the last decade. It is the third largest higher-education hub housing thousands of universities across the country. India’s IIT Delhi now ranks in top 500 world university rankings

Infosys cofounder NR <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> shares the same sentiments as that of Bharat Ratna Professor CNR Rao and believes that the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> is yet to meet higher expectations and that there is work to be done. 
 
While delivering a gathering during the convocation of the IISc, Murthy on Wednesday said that as compared to western universities, India had no earth-shaking invention and urged higher educational institutes to incentivise focused research. 
 "IISc is the leader in engineering and <keyword id="2952898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="research-in-India">research in India</keyword>. Therefore, expectations are higher. IISc can do better even by Indian standards. We all want IISc to be one of the top institutions in the world and there is work to be done,” said Murthy. 
 
Murthy said that the scientific research had not received enough attention of prime ministers since Jawaharlal Nehru. “Nehru's exhortation to Indian researchers in the US to come back to India (in 1962) resulted in the green revolution, white revolution, advances in atomic energy and the space programme. We have to recreate the magic of the sixties," he said. 
 
Murthy called on academicians, politicians, and corporate leaders and urged them to pitch in to enable impactful work in the real world. 
 
Many researchers agreed with Murthy. 
 
Vijay Kumar Sutrakar, a DRDO scientist who won the gold medal for his PhD thesis in aerospace engineering, said, “IISc lacks instrumentation and testing facilities for advanced research. We have to synchronise our syllabus with next-generation aircraft,” said Sutrakar. 
 
Dr Sheik Rehana, assistant professor with IIIT Hyderabad and gold medalist in civil engineering, told ET: "We need to deal with real problems like drainage issues in our research to learn how to solve it in real life."

The Indian Government recently came out with the second edition of ‘India Rankings 2017’ in a bid to rank institutes across several disciplines. In the second edition, a total of 2995 institutions participated, including 232 universities, 1024 engineering institutions, 546 management institutions, 318 pharmacy institutions and 637 general degree colleges. This time some of the sub-parameters were tweaked in a bid to have more robust system of rankings. Parameters such as research Impact, quality of publications, innovations, placements, student population, etc were gauged. Although the Centre-funded institutions, in general continue to do well, some of the state-funded universities also are prominent. Some private institutions and universities have also been quietly climbing up to take high positions, thus offering value for money to their students, going by their ranks. The Bill seeks to merge three Ayurveda institutes into one institution -- Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda. The Bill declares the institute to be an institution of national importance. The Bill was moved by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in the absence of Ayush Minister Sripad Naik, who is recovering from Covid-19. Harsh Vardhan said, "The ministry is giving deemed university status to the institutes in various parts of the country and the matter is referred to the UGC and Education Ministry." The Minister said that there are 103 institutes of national importance, but there was none in Ayurveda. He said the Jamnagar institute has been chosen because this is one of the oldest institutes of the country founded by the Government of India in 1956. Many MPs from the TRS, Bodoland People's Front, AIADMK, CPM, BSP and others demanded similar institutes in other states also. The Chairman, M. Venkiah Naidu, said, "The minister should take into consideration the demand of such institutes in every state." Congress leader L. Hanumanthiah raised objections during the discussion. He said, "Why Gujarat is given so much importance and Kerala should also be given prominence, which is a pioneer of the Ayurveda." While Thambidurai AIADMK member supported the Bill, he demanded a National Institute of Siddha in Tamil Nadu. Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal raised the issue of mental health and said House the mental counselling is needed in Covid times. RJD MP Manoj Jha demanded a regulator for the Ayurvedic medicines so that no misuse takes place. He cited the claims made by Ramdev that he has made medicine for Covid-19. The Bill seeks three institutes to be merged -- the Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Shree Gulabkunverba Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Jamnagar, and, the Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences, all in Jamnagar. The proposed Institute will be situated in the campus of Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar. The Institute will be developed on the patterns of teaching in medical education in Ayurveda and pharmacy, bring together educational facilities for training of personnel in all branches of Ayurveda, and attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate education to meet the need for specialists and medical teachers in Ayurveda, also make an in-depth study and research in the field of Ayurveda. The Bill provides that the Institute will consist of 15 members and the Director of the Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar will be appointed as the first Director of the Institute. The Bill states that there will be a Governing Body of the Institute, which will exercise powers and such functions of the Institute, as specified. Fortis Healthcare to roll out Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine from June 19

The elusive 'God particle' discovered by scientists in 2012 has always been hogging limelight for one reason or the other. Scientists at <keyword id="6624175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cern">CERN</keyword>, a European research organisation, found the Higgs Boson while conducting the Compact Muon Solenoid (<keyword id="15615" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="cms">CMS</keyword>) experiment, which is part of the Large Hadron Collider. CERN is expected to re-collect data around March 2015, and this time the team will onboard another member from India—IIT-Madras that is. 
 
CERN has collaborated with IIT-Madras to solve the mystery of the Gods particle, and the India’s premier education institute is aiming to make the best use of this wonderful opportunity. 
 
Experts believe that the latest move will help students to excel in the field of Physics. Numerous PhD students from the Physics department will get to work in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator. 
 
On the other hand, members of various departments, which include physics, computer science and electrical engineering, at IIT-M can sharpen their skills by conducting experiments on data analysis, grid computing and high-end detector building. 
 
“Being connected to CERN can give many more students a taste of the power of fundamental research,” said Prafulla Kumar Behera of the physics department of IIT-Madras, pointing out that this is the first IIT and, in fact, the first institute from the southern States to have become a full member of the CMS. 
 It is important to note that Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and <keyword id="71684" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bhabha-Atomic-Research-Centre">Bhabha Atomic Research Centre</keyword>, Delhi and Panjab Universities have long been members of the CMS.
