Because of their price, Mazarra said a lot of people will do their training runs in them, even though they're not designed to be worn every day. "You start to see people do their recovery runs in Vaporflys because it's kind of a status symbol that you paid $250 or $300 for," he said.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/reneeenoe/?hl=en">Reneé Noe</a>, a running influencer who started the Noe Bad Vibes running club for women, said she sees AlphaFlys a lot, too. Honey Stinger's Energy Waffles are particular fan favorites, because "it feels like actual food," she said.</p><p>But Maurten energy gel (<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.maurten.com/products/gel-100-box-us">$43 for 12 gels</a>), flavorless and more expensive than its competitors, is going to make a splash this year, Mazarra said. It's the gel famously used by long-distance runner <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/12/sports/eliud-kipchoge-marathon-record.html">Eliud Kipchoge when he broke a sub-2-hour marathon record</a> in 2019. "It's small, but it's stretchy," she said, noting that runners love how lightweight it feels without bouncing with each step.</p><h2 id="9f7b2ba4-a1bc-4105-a253-dc8eeb2f73d4">COROS is vying for Garmin's elite status</h2><div type="image" title="COROS PACE 3" height="1279" width="1705" msid="114786146" hostid="261" sizebytes="153388"></div><p>According to Noe, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-garmin-watch">Garmin</a> remains one of the most popular sports watches for a reason. "Garmin is so exact," she said, calling out the <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=e3189446d4c3fa3ac45eb05768d2e8ee7549757c85ad443b6da61c4852d98b40&amp;postID=671961dfe5b540830066f048&amp;postSlug=run-clubs-marathon-style-nike-lululemon-garmin-hoka-bandit-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.garmin.com%2Fen-US%2Fp%2F873214">Venu 3S</a> ($450) as one of the best models because of its long battery life.</p><p>Mazarra said COROS watches like the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://us.coros.com/pace3">Pace 3</a> ($230) are starting to seriously compete with Garmin, partly due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DBMUF7UI30W/?hl=en">sponsoring top athletes like Kipchoge</a>. "It's a little bit more of a status symbol because COROS also has this pretty sleek heart rate monitor," he said. But as far as the technology goes, he said running in Garmin and COROS is "actually quite similar."</p><h2 id="adc73b1a-00a7-4668-914c-7b2f4657fb99"><strong>Oakley is breaking into the running market</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Oakley Sutro Lite" height="1020" width="1360" msid="114786141" hostid="261" sizebytes="17252"></div><p>Mazarra said Goodr sunglasses are popular because they cost around $25 and reliably stay on your face without sliding.</p><p>Noe said Oakley's aviator-style options like the <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=34c15c4c826a201e6ca6a2dccaf1c8042000b045488336ccbf18219e8a9a7587&amp;postID=671961dfe5b540830066f048&amp;postSlug=run-clubs-marathon-style-nike-lululemon-garmin-hoka-bandit-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.oakley.com%2Fen-us%2Fproduct%2FW0OO9463">Sutro Lite</a> ($202) offer bigger frames that cover more of your face, as well as frames that wrap around more for extra security. Running isn't just about fitness — these 8 products are shaping the new look of run clubs

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-could-cut-managers-save-3-billion-analysts-2024-10">Amazon</a>'s October Prime Big Deal Days include some non-traditional holiday offers, such as chainsaws.</li><li>It shows how Amazon is expanding holiday sales — and trying to get Prime members to buy more.</li></ul><p>Many of the deals that Amazon is advertising for its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/amazon-prime-day">Prime Big Deal Days</a> this month aren't your typical holiday gifts.</p><p>To be sure, the company describes the sales event as "epic deals ahead of the holiday season" (note the "ahead" here). But with other retailers also offering discounts at the same time, it's hard not to feel like holiday shopping is just starting earlier than usual.</p><p>At Amazon,<strong> </strong>in addition to huge televisions and Apple Airpods, reduced-price items include <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mensjournal.com/gear/best-early-camping-deals-amazon-prime-big-deal-days-2024">camping gear</a>, such as a tent and a pocket knife, chainsaws, and other seasonal tools that many people are storing in their garages as winter approaches.</p><p>Many are "things that we desire, but we would not necessarily think about as holiday gifts," said Luc Wathieu, a professor of marketing at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. "Nobody will think about buying a chainsaw for Christmas, right?"</p><p>But by holding a second annual Prime Day event on October 8 and 9 this year,<strong> </strong>Amazon can take those kinds of items, which might normally be sold at steep end-of-season discounts, and market them as early holiday deals. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-day-will-have-more-deals-than-black-friday-2015-7">Prime Day started</a> as a summertime sale, and Amazon held the event for the first time in July 2015. It added the fall version in 2022 (though Prime Day 2020 also took place in October that year due to delays from the pandemic).</p><p>"Things that didn't do as well during the July Prime Day can be cleared out so that they can then start focusing on the other goods that they want to sell during the holidays," said Sky Canaves, a principal analyst who covers retail and e-commerce at Emarketer, a sister company to Business Insider.</p><p>US consumer spending data and company earnings this summer suggested that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shoppers-spending-less-retailers-brands-cutting-prices-economy-explained-why-2024-7">shoppers are pulling back</a> on their purchases to varying degrees.</p><p>While many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retailers-showing-squeezed-us-shoppers-have-two-very-different-realities-2024-8">low-income people</a> are focusing on food and other essentials, more affluent middle- and upper-income consumers still have money to spend on clothing, home decor, and other small luxuries. But they are being more thrifty than they were a few years ago.</p><p>Amazon's Prime members tend to fit into the latter group, Wathieu said. They are willing to pay Amazon's monthly or annual fees for Prime, after all. "They're a little bit less price sensitive" than shoppers who have to delay their purchases until closer to the holidays, he said.</p><p>Offering outdoor gear, yard tools, and other out-of-season products during October's event is likely one way that Amazon is trying to get Prime members to spend more, Wathieu said. "You have to see this more as a strategic move from Amazon to leverage what their capabilities are, including having swayed everyone into Prime membership that they need to leverage," he said.</p><p>An Amazon spokesperson said, "Right now, we are focused on making this year's event special for our members and are excited to offer exclusive early savings this holiday season." The spokesperson did not comment directly on Amazon's strategy for sourcing the deals.</p><p>"We know saving is important to our Prime members, and we are excited to provide members deep discounts and millions of deals worldwide from top categories including electronics, home, toys, beauty, and apparel," and on brands like Dyson and Barbie, the spokesperson added.</p><p>Other retailers are offering their own October sales this year, giving Amazon some competition. Walmart's <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=3ac90f89af3f3fa7efd3a07998b32efb276666171ebfe5ac5ff429f13efb1424&amp;postID=66feb0730c43543ec7a7009e&amp;postSlug=amazon-october-prime-day-sale-includes-unusual-holiday-items-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fshop%2Fdeals">Holiday Deals</a> sale starts on October 8, the first day of Prime Day, and runs through October 13. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://corporate.target.com/press/release/2024/09/target-circle-week-returns-oct-6-12-with-seven-days-of-deals-up-to-50-off">Target Circle Week</a> kicks off on October 6 this year.</p><p>Even retailers outside the big-box sphere are participating. <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=1b82d37e789aa76c11561a3e821ff69ce2556b4bd24977585dde8332be9d90c3&amp;postID=66feb0730c43543ec7a7009e&amp;postSlug=amazon-october-prime-day-sale-includes-unusual-holiday-items-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.homedepot.com%2Fb%2FDecor-Days%2FN-5yc1vZ1z1zl2q">Home Depot</a> started its Décor Days sale on Thursday, marking the second year for the sale. Rival <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://corporate.lowes.com/newsroom/press-releases/lowes-launches-first-ever-mylowes-rewards-week-40-biggest-member-deals-year-09-26-24">Lowe's</a>, meanwhile, will launch MyLowe's Rewards Week, the home improvement chain's first October sale, on Thursday.</p><p>But all those sales at once might be too much for shoppers. Sixty-seven percent said that they expect to "feel overwhelmed with marketing messages" from retailers about holiday sales by November 1, according to research firm Optimove Insights. The survey, conducted in July, polled 280 US shoppers over the age of 21 from households with incomes of $75,000 or more.</p><p>Even devout Amazon shoppers might feel burned out on sales, with the retailer's October sale coming less than three months after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-day-us-purchases-essentials-trash-bags-numerator-consumer-2024-7">July's Prime Day</a>, Canaves said.</p><p>"There is a risk of holiday marketing fatigue," she said.</p><p><em>Do you work for Amazon and have a story idea to share? Their identities are known to BI.</p><p>Details of the special have been trickling out over the past few days in outlets like <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/amazon-brian-williams-election-night-special-streaming-1236158601/">Variety</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/29/media/brian-williams-amazon-prime-video-election-night/index.html?utm_term=17277006269107d550e2ab43a&amp;utm_source=cnn_Reliable+Sources+%E2%80%93+Sept.+30%2C+2024&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;bt_ee=vPubjlLkW1gs8yiBPmN%2BGqep71YTbD%2FkJvRQ5eU4n2Rv%2F3LufDHYaeQctXVPY211&amp;bt_ts=1727700626912">CNN</a>, although Amazon has not confirmed the deal and it's possible it won't come to fruition.</p><p>News of the potential deal has sparked questions in the industry about whether the tech giant plans to expand as deeply into news as it has with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-studios-expansion-challenges-jennifer-salke-citadel-lord-rings-2023-2">filmed entertainment</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-marine-leading-amazon-sports-ambitions-nba-rights-2024-3">sports</a>.</p><p>The people close to the deal talks rebuffed the idea that Amazon would build its own news operation, however. They said Amazon sees the special as another way to amass big audiences, as it has done with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-nfl-thursday-night-football-advertising-strategy-new-brands-2023-9">NFL's "Thursday Night Football"</a> and other sports. The special has the potential to reach more than 200 million viewers, which is Prime Video's monthly reach, according to Amazon's most recent public disclosure.</p><p>If it goes well, Amazon could repeat the approach with other big news events, one of the people close to the deal talks said. Those events could include the presidential inauguration or State of the Union address, this person predicted.</p><p>"It's a toe in the water for them in that they're trying to get beyond sports to other, seasonal special types of events," this person said. "There's news-adjacent programming they could do."</p><p>Two of the people close to the deal talks said the election-night special was expected to be ad-free. No final decisions have been made, though. But Amazon and other tech-rooted streamers have seen how live programming, like comedy specials and awards shows, creates appointment viewing that can be highly attractive to advertisers. Advertisers, and especially marketers with time-sensitive product launches, have shown a willingness to pay high prices to reach large live audiences. Amazon this year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-ads-early-success-with-advertisers-2024-4">turned on ads in Prime Video</a>, gunning for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending.</p><p>For Amazon, specifically, filmed entertainment and sports programming — part of Prime Video — also serves to keep people subscribing to its lucrative Prime service and get people to shop more on the platform. Prime Video's 2023 Black Friday NFL game, for example, showed QR codes during breaks to promote deals on the site.</p><p>"It fits in with their interest in disruptions and amassing big audiences," the second person close to the deal talks said. "They want to be in the big-event business."</p><h2 id="7f7a9c20-5ffc-43f3-a0df-b0f758efb495">News has been slow to shift to streaming</h2><p>Big champions of the election-night special within Amazon include Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, and his powerful No. 2, Albert Cheng, vice president of Prime Video US. Hopkins has played a role in Prime Video's aggressive expansion into sports, which has created tension with some on the entertainment side who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-marine-leading-amazon-sports-ambitions-nba-rights-2024-3">see the sports investment coming at the expense of film and TV budgets</a>.</p><p>If the deal goes through, the special would be produced by Jonathan Wald, a veteran TV news producer who executive-produced Williams' "11th Hour" on MSNBC and has lately focused on new news formats. He helped Don Lemon launch shows on social media, for example. Williams' reps at talent agency CAA have also been involved.</p><p>While entertainment and sports have shifted to streaming, news has been slower to follow. Legacy broadcasters like NBC News and ABC News have invested in live-streamed content; CNN has planned a streaming subscription service, but it's had starts and stops.</p><p>Tech companies with streaming services have generally steered clear of news — not surprisingly, given the high cost of operating a newsroom and how polarizing news can be.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-ceo-ted-sarandos-ads-sports-originals-change-mind-2024-9">Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos</a>, in a recent interview, rejected the idea of the streamer covering breaking news. Apple TV+ drifted into news-adjacent programming in 2020 with Jon Stewart, who hosted a weekly comedy news show. But Stewart walked away after two seasons, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theringer.com/2024/6/13/24177435/jon-stewart-talks-apple-split-corporate-constraints-media-regression">saying</a> Apple increasingly wanted more oversight of the show's editorial direction.</p><p>Amazon, for its part, wants to bring a down-the-middle presentation of election results hosted by Williams with a lineup of exclusive contributors. To lend a nonpartisan feel, the plan is that the presenters won't call the race and will point viewers to third-party content (which could include sites like CNN and NBC News that are available through Amazon Channels). The event would be broadcast from LA, allowing it to run late into the night.</p><p>And while some elements would be familiar to a news audience, Amazon is expected to put its own twist on the potential presentation, similar to how it souped up the production of "Thursday Night Football" with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/24/23842818/amazon-thursday-night-football-ai-streaming">on-screen overlays</a> that predict what might happen next.</p>

Amazon is jumping into news as it closes in on a deal with Brian Williams

<ul class="summary-list"><li>There's a new card from OTH Network that influencers are swiping to redeem products and services.</li><li>The influencer-focused fintech platform uses AI to match brands and creators.</li></ul><p>There's a hot new card influencers are swiping at restaurants and retailers to redeem products and services.</p><p>The card is offered by OTH ("on the house") Network, an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/influencer-fintech-channelmeter-launches-youtuber-early-payment-app-2020-7">influencer-focused fintech platform</a> that uses artificial intelligence to monitor content created for brands and match creators with marketing deals. Influencers use the OTH Network app to gather offers from local businesses. Then, after creating <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-reach-out-to-brands-influencer-collaboration-post-email">sponsored content</a>, they can spend the payment added to their account in person at the business.</p><p>The closed platform has a waiting list, which influencers must apply for by filling out questions like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-influencers-charge-sponsored-posts-ai-other-takeaways-data-2024-5">follower count, content category</a>, and location. Once accepted, the creator will receive a black and gold card (like a loyalty card) to use in person to redeem products and services.</p><p>For example, Sushi Bar in Miami, Flowrbombr Skincare in Los Angeles, and Footnanny Nail Spa in Beverly Hills have all partnered with OTH for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/influencer-marketing-is-booming-as-brands-take-creators-more-seriously-2024-7">influencer campaigns</a>.</p><p>Cofounders Maximiliaan Van Kuyk and Ketan Rahangdale started the company in 2020 and, in September, raised <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/creator-economy-startups-raised-vc-money-in-bear-market-2023-11">VC funding</a> from Innovate Ventures, according to Pitchbook.</p><p>In some ways, OTH is part of a familiar practice in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-to-make-money-as-content-creator">influencer world</a>: gifting. Brands will often send influencers free products or services with the hope or expectation that they will post about it on social media. But OTH is putting a new twist on this practice by looking to streamline the process using an AI-powered app and giving it an exclusive feel with a physical card.</p><p>"We see influencers opening up like 10 packages a day and putting it on social," Van Kuyk said, referring to traditional influencer gifting practices. "But it's super inorganic."</p><p>Van Kuyk told Business Insider that the platform currently has over 3,000 creators and over 90,000 global creator applications. In the US, it's available to creators in cities including Miami, LA, Chicago, Las Vegas, and New York, with plans to expand. The company started in hospitality and then expanded into wellness, beauty, and fashion.</p><p>"We are being extremely diligent on only letting in the top creators in cities we are operating in," Van Kuyk said.</p><p>Influencers who use the platform include Roz Model (15 million Instagram followers), Montana Tucker (3.2 million Instagram followers), Kat Graham (9.7 million Instagram followers), and Matt Staffanina (3.7 million Instagram followers).</p><p>Creators must have at least 10,000 Instagram followers to be considered, and for now, OTH rarely accepts creators <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/micro-influencer-campaigns-decline-marketers-turn-to-big-stars-2024-10">under 100,000 followers</a>, Van Kuyk said. But he added that the platform plans to expand into micro influencer categories.</p><p>"We have made some exceptions to that, just because some merchants enjoy that, but for the most part that's where we've been focusing," he said. "We 100% acknowledge that space and we will be moving into that space over time. Maybe we will release a micro influencer strategy product that will be a little bit separate and have different rules around it. But, as a startup, we have to stay focused on what our strengths are."</p><h2 id="7bd36f65-955d-4320-957f-3b0cd78e7e3d">How OTH Network structures its partnerships</h2><p id="7bd36f65-955d-4320-957f-3b0cd78e7e3d">Typically, influencers on the platform are asked to create two pieces of content, like an Instagram story or reel, or TikTok, that features themselves and the restaurant or product. They upload the content to the OTH app, and the platform's AI technology checks the quality of the content.</p><p id="7bd36f65-955d-4320-957f-3b0cd78e7e3d">Once the content is approved, the influencer can post it, and the business can then use that content on their own marketing channels.</p><p id="7bd36f65-955d-4320-957f-3b0cd78e7e3d">Van Kuyk said the platform makes money by charging the merchants, but declined to expand on its business model and fee structure.</p><p>Using AI and other third-party systems, OTH checks its applicants for bots, fake followers, and overall engagement. Brands care about a creator's audience, brand safety, and if the creator fits the right aesthetic, Van Kuyk said.</p><p>Once accepted, the influencer is asked to jump on a call, which is part of an interview process with the company's creator team.</p><p>OTH is not partnered with a bank. Instead, the card works more like a reimbursement or loyalty card, and each business uses the app to tap the card and redeem the influencer's credit.</p><p>"That is a direction that we're planning on going in, to actually have that be a real Visa or Mastercard that the influencers are banking with," Van Kuyk said. "We have a serious tech team in-house that is constantly building and upgrading these things. It's not just an agency with an app in front of it."</p>

I was just kind of pursuing something for the sake of it," he said.</p><p>After about three years in Japan, he went back to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caribbean-native-more-than-sun-sea-sand-2024-8">Trinidad and Tobago</a> to be with his family when his grandmother was diagnosed with cancer.</p><p>His return coincided with the pandemic, and his grandmother ended up passing away during the start of lockdown.</p><div type="image" title="The window in the apartment." height="1080" width="1440" msid="114100623" hostid="261" sizebytes="37444"></div><p>"And at the same time, all of my friends were having babies. It was a really strange time," LaJuan said. "With so many things going on, it made me really rethink what I wanted out of life."</p><p>He realized he always had a passion for video editing, and he decided to dive into it.</p><p>"I kind of got myself to a place where I'd be able to get clients and work from anywhere for the most part," he said. It was around then that he decided he wanted to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-mom-moved-family-osaka-japan-safety-and-affordability-school-2024-9">move back to Japan</a>.</p><h2 id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84"><strong>Turning a micro-apartment into a home</strong></h2><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">LaJuan pays 32,420 Japanese yen, or about $230, in monthly rent for his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crazy-pictures-of-micro-apartments-around-hong-kong-2018-1">micro-apartment</a>. It's located about a three-minute walk from the nearest convenience store and a five-minute walk to the nearest subway station.</p><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">The area he lives in has a huge mix of Japanese and non-Japanese residents, unlike in Fuji, where he lived prior.</p><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">"Initially, when I lived in Fuji, it was the rural countryside. I have dreads, I stand out like a sore thumb," he said. "Whereas here, where I live, my next-door neighbor, she's Japanese, and then the person next to her, it's an Indian couple."</p><div type="image" title="The office area." height="960" width="1280" msid="114100624" hostid="261" sizebytes="32292"></div><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">Unlike the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-going-to-japan-avoid-mistakes-travel-advice-2024-7">hustle and bustle of Tokyo and Kyoto</a>, Nagoya — which is situated between the two other cities — feels a bit more laid-back, he said.</p><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">Tokyo is the most <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.stat.go.jp/english/data/handbook/pdf/2023all.pdf">populated city in Japan</a>. It has about 9.7 million citizens, compared to Nagoya City's 2.33 million and Kyoto City's 1.46 million.</p><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">"Things are really tight in those spaces, and it's overwhelming because of the amount of people that live there. Whereas Nagoya, to me, is a perfect balance of both city life and just having some space for yourself," he added.</p><p id="af26f948-496e-4547-aa69-f30e820dce84">It's also the perfect setting for him to lead a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retired-millennial-moved-america-philippines-slow-life-debt-free-2024-2">slower, more intentional life</a>.</p><h2 id="5edab68f-1756-4296-8e2c-4e3a0672d8b5"><strong>Simplifying things for the better</strong></h2><p id="5edab68f-1756-4296-8e2c-4e3a0672d8b5">When he first arrived in Japan, LaJuan's house was already much more minimalistic than it was in Trinidad.</p><div type="image" title="A mini foldable sofa and a tiny desk." height="1080" width="1920" msid="114100627" hostid="261" sizebytes="85988"></div><p>Even though he lived in a much bigger place than he does now, he owned just two cups and two plates back then. And whenever he had guests over, they would always ask him why.</p><p>"Well, there's just one of me — I have double what I need. That's just the way I was thinking about it," he said.</p><p>But he really started embracing the lifestyle when a friend introduced him to the Netflix documentary "Minimalism" during his return to Trinidad.</p><p>"I didn't know it was a movement or anything like that. And after I watched that, it resonated with me," he said. "I'm like, oh, I'm going to live life purely based on what I want to get out of life, and purely with intention."</p><p>Part of that included <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-retirement-not-worth-it-dad-sacrificed-frugal-died-2024-9">living frugally</a> to achieve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-financial-independence-retire-early-philippines-us-slow-debt-free-2024-3">financial freedom</a> — hence the micro-apartment.</p><p>"I want to have financial freedom, and all that really means is I want peace. I don't want to be burdened by my finances," LaJuan said. "I could have gotten a bigger place for sure, but here it allows me to live on 25%."</p><div type="image" title="The kitchen." height="1080" width="1440" msid="114100629" hostid="261" sizebytes="70830"></div><p>That way, he'll always have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/banking/what-is-an-emergency-fund">emergency funds</a> in case he loses his part-time teaching job.</p><p>"The things that give me a lot of value, I'll spend a lot on, and the things that don't give me value, I won't spend a lot on," he said. "The things I care about at this moment are the work that I'm doing, my friends, and my family. I really care about these kinds of things, and they don't cost any money."</p><p>Not only has living minimally brought clarity in terms of what he wants out of life, but it has also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-from-home-productivity-hacks-2019-6">helped his productivity</a> since he doesn't get distracted as easily.</p><p>"I'm ridiculously productive here compared to my old space," he said. "I have five minutes to procrastinate. That's it. When I get off the bed, the computer is there watching me."</p><h2 id="8b5c53a4-ca92-456f-a274-e86f57770d8d">Feeling content with life</h2><p>LaJuan is part of a growing movement of people who are interested in simplifying their lives, including in terms of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/minimalism-sold-my-home-possessions-stuff-downsized-simplify-life-2023-3">housing choices</a>.</p><p>With the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cities-best-quality-life-also-least-affordable-real-estate-prices-2023-12">high cost of living in cities</a>, homeownership is becoming increasingly elusive for people <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cities-best-quality-life-also-least-affordable-real-estate-prices-2023-12">all around the world</a>. For some, a minimalist life constitutes <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-couple-singapore-downsized-home-hdb-mortgage-debt-free-2023-9">downsizing their homes to be debt-free</a>. His monthly expenditure — including rent, bills, and recreational funds — is 170,000 Japanese yen, or about $1,100, a month.</p><p>It was still a big lifestyle adjustment for him, compared to how he was spending before.</p><p>"What it did for me was positive, though, because now I have to be a lot more intentional about things. So if I want to do a trip, for example, I'll have to save up for a longer period," he said.</p><p>The best part about embracing minimalism is the shift in perspective.</p><p>"Living with intention actually makes life so much better because I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything," LaJuan said.</p><p>"Where I live right now, there are a lot of really nice luxury vehicles, so I see it on a regular basis. There are really nice homes around me too, and not once do I ever think like, 'Oh no, my life.' I'm like, 'Oh, I'm happy for them.
