New Delhi, Jan 14 () US-based automotive software provider DealerSocket on Tuesday said it has set up a centre of excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and plans to hire about 200 professionals for the unit by the end of the current year.
 The company, which has operations in the US, Canada and Australia, offers a suite of solutions to help dealers sell and service vehicles more profitably while improving their customers' experience.
 It works with about 8,000 dealers, offering them advanced customer relationship management (CRM), vehicle inventory management, analytics reporting and other solutions.
 "India has a large pool of talented and skilled workforce that can support our expansion. We have hired about 35 professionals and are looking to take this to 200 by the end of this year across all roles including data scientists and developers," DealerSocket President and CEO Sejal Chokshi Pietrzak told .
 She added that the Bengaluru team will work collaboratively with other teams to launch new capabilities, important enhancements, and valuable innovations for its customers.
 DealerSocket has named Tarun Jain as managing director who will be responsible for establishing and leading DealerSocket's CoE in Bengaluru. The company, however, is not looking at setting up sales operations in India yet. SR HRS

 According to <keyword id="105279" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="the-Times">The Times</keyword> of India, more recently, in September 2014, <keyword id="6430978" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru-police">Bengaluru police</keyword> nabbed Pankaj Kumar Roy, alleged to be a high-profile arms dealer who had even struck deals with LTTE agents, and confiscated weapons and ammunition. 
 
Bengaluru, and even other parts of Karnataka, are slowly turning into places where people are armed with illegal guns and revolvers. Police and other agencies crack some cases, while others remain undetected. "There is a problem and it's growing. With the general level of tolerance in society declining, people are arming themselves, especially with illegal weapons. 
 This poses a great danger, and the department is working on such elements," a <keyword id="166593" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="senior-police-officer">senior police officer</keyword> said. According to information from the ministry of home affairs (MHA), nearly 300 people have been arrested in Karnataka over the past four years in connection with illegal arms cases, and 337 weapons have been seized. Documents show that in 2011, a total of 141 arms were seized by various agencies in Karnataka and this remains the highest till January 2015. In the first month of this year alone, six weapons were seized and nine persons arrested, said TOI. 
 
"In 2012, we saw a lot of cases where people used weapons for bank or jewellery shop robberies. This was despite several seizures. But the number of seizures reduced and even the activity of such people has declined," the officer said. 
 Across India, the TOI report said, a total of 45,366 weapons have been seized from January 2011 to January 2015, and most of them, not surprisingly, from Jammu &amp; Kashmir, <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>, UP and other known states. In South India, <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> (including Telangana) tops the chart with 921 seizures, while <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and Kerala have reported 290 and 139 seizures, respectively.

South India's growing gun culture causing panic

Petrol pumps and LPG retail outlets based in Bengaluru and other urban areas of Karnataka might be mandatorily asked to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the oil marketing companies in case they want to switch businesses. 
 
This means that oil companies too will need to approve the changes that the landlord decides in using the land. It was after the ministry of petroleum and natural gas sent a letter to the urban development department, asking it to treat retailing of petrol, diesel and LPG as essential activities that the department sent a circular to this effect to BDA and other state authorities. 
 
The new rule only applies to outlets that are affiliated to public sector oil marketing companies, leaving private retail outlets untouched. 
 However, the new rule has not met the consent of <keyword id="3511610" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="IT-Bangalore-Petroleum-Dealers-Association">IT Bangalore Petroleum Dealers Association</keyword>, which has expressed its grief. 
 
Association president BR Ravindranath said that the pumps are closing down because the landlords don't want to renew the lease keeping in mind the poor rentals that these state-run oil firms pay. 
 
"They want to pay peanuts for the land they get. Instead of making rentals attractive, they come up with irrational rules such as this infringing upon the fundamental rights of citizens," he told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/energy/oil-gas/noc-must-if-fuel-pumps-want-to-switch-business/articleshow/53374645.cms">ET</a>. 
 
"The oil marketing companies are making no efforts to retain the landlords, and as a result, more than a dozen pumps have closed down in the past two years," he added.

Harley-Davidson restarts production, but the company is reportedly shipping 70% fewer bikes to dealers in 2020

New Delhi, May 19 () Piaggio India on Tuesday said Vespa and Aprilia dealerships have resumed operations in Karnataka. The dealerships are now open in Bengaluru, Mysore, Belgaum, Mangalore, Bijapur, Davangere, Shimoga and Udupi, Piaggio India said in a statement. The opening of dealerships is being done in a staggered manner since few days, post receiving permission from the respective local authorities, it added. Piaggio India has already resumed manufacturing operations at its Baramati plant for the supply of Vespa and Aprilia scooters. "We have been working together with our dealers in navigating through the new reality and the opening of dealerships is a key step in that direction," Piaggio India Chairman and MD Diego Graffi said. ET reported that the data is sod anywhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for the personal data of up to 1 lakh people in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bengaluru&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bengaluru</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hyderabad&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Hyderabad</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a>. 
 
The lists up for sale are creative and granular. One data broker said he could get lists of high net worth individuals, salaried people, credit card holders, car owners and retired women in any given vicinity. 
 Some brokers sent free samples: excel sheets with personal data of people in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, split by address and income profiles. “It’s scary to say the least,” said Hyderabad-based Rajashekar, whose data like name, address and credit card ownership was procured from a Gurgaon-based data broker who sold ET a sample database of nearly 3,000 people with <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6357149" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword> credit cards. 
 
The database had details like name, address, phone number and the classification of the card (debit, credit or a premium card). The broker also said that a database of 1.7 lakh people from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a>, NCR and Bengaluru can be made available for Rs 7,000. 
 
“It should be deemed as a crime. Without my permission, how can someone trade information related to me?” said Bengaluru-based Nagaraj BK, who was appalled that details of his purchase of a gas stove on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=eBay&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">eBay</a> were procured by ET as part of a free sample. 
 However, eBay said it takes data security and privacy of buyers and sellers on its platform very seriously. An <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> spokesperson said the company was not aware of any data leak or any data being sold from their end, adding that any such case brought to their notice will be dealt with strictly to ensure customer data protection. 
 
The obvious question to ask is: where are these brokers getting the data from? “Most of the data is sold to us by mobile service providers, agents from hospitals and banks, loan agents, car dealers,” Rajesh, an executive from an NCR-based data broker, told ET.

Personal details are up for sale for less than a rupee

Ecommerce giant Amazon is in a tough fight with the commercial tax department of Karnataka. In a yet to be settled case, the deadlock involves VAT for certain transactions by Amazon India. As per a news report by The Economic Times, the department laid down two conditions to the Indian arm of the Seattle-headquartered ecommerce giant as an alternative to being registered as a dealer. Firsty, Amazon India must disclose details of transactions carried out on its website and secondly, it must take primary liability if a merchant defaults paying value-added tax on transactions executed on Amazon. 
 
While Amazon has no problem with the first demand, it has declined the second, senior government officials told the financial daily. The two conditions implied that VAT authorities would want to treat Amazon India as a "commission agent" -- a status the online marketplace is not willing to accept in view of federal regulations that bar foreign direct investment in online retail. 
The Commercial Taxes department began working on a solution after Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah recently asked it to sort out issues flagged by the US firm. The company's dealer-expansion efforts in Bengaluru have been grounded the past one year after VAT authorities stopped issuing branch certificates to merchants wanting to partner with Amazon. 
 
The deal offered by the tax department also required Amazon to prove if VAT had been paid for a certain transaction if the department raised a claim. At a meeting with top tax officials, Amazon India executives held on to the argument that their core activity in India included providing modern warehousing facilities for merchants to store products, display and provide a technology-enabled online marketplace for those products, and facilitate online sale and receipt payment on the merchant's behalf, among other things. Since each partner-merchant is a VAT assessee, and required to remit VAT collected every month, Amazon executives said it cannot get into those aspects. 
 
According to tax experts, the workaround the Commercial Taxes department has suggested will only transfer VAT officials' job to the online retailer. 
 
Also, a merchant on Amazon's digital marketplace is required to pay VAT only on the value-added part of his transaction as he can claim input tax credits on purchases already made. But in the event of a default, Amazon India will not be able to claim input tax credit as it will not have access to a merchant's transaction history, and will have to pay VAT on the full sale price of a product.

Mumbai, Jul 2 () Despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has crippled every segment of the economy, Lexus India has no plans to shelve or delay its planned launches this year. The Japanese carmaker, however, will look at the changing consumer behaviour, as it expects the luxury car business to be the last to recover from the massive disruption caused by the pandemic, according to its India head. Earlier this year, Lexus India said it would bring in three models this year--the flagship hybrid electric car LC 500h coupe, and the new variants of the ES 300h Exquisite and the NX 300h Exquisite. "Of course, the pandemic has dampened the sentiment for us and I expect the luxe car segment to be the last to recoup. Having said that let me make it clear that we have no plans to shelve or delay the three launches which we had announced in the beginning of the year," P B Venugopal, the president of Lexus India, told over phone from his Bengaluru headquarters. Whether the luxury car segment will survive the pandemic-induced slump, he pointed to the large latent potential as the industry pie is only about 1.5 per cent of the total market of over 3 million units, while the global average is 5-7 per cent. "We are targeting carbon-neutral customers here and therefore we are for the long-term here. Of our total sales almost 80 per cent are self-charging hybrid electric vehicles," Venugopal said without sharing the total number of cars it has sold since the entry in March 2017 citing internal policy constraints. Expecting the new normal to be more digital, he said they'll look at human-centric digital solutions to drive the brand philosophy of empathy, engagement and encouragement, as Lexus is an emotional brand. Lexus has seven dealers and three guest experience centres and a manufacturing plant at Bidai near Bengaluru, which is the fourth plant for the company after the mother plant in the US, Japan and Canada. Venugopal said they will be launching four more guest experience centres in Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad complementing those in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. On the response to the locally-produced world-class sedan ES 300h, which was rolled out this January, he said the customer response to the car was "much beyond expectation". Lexus sells the ES 300h (Rs 56.95 lakh), NX 300h (Rs 60.60 lakh), RX 450hL (Rs 99 lakh), and the LC 500h (Rs 1.96 crore) among others. The RX 450hL is the world's most popular self-charging hybrid electric SUV, and was launched in the country last October.
