Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday stated that <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> technology is expected to inject around $450 billion into the <keyword id="19948184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-economy" source="keywords">Indian economy</keyword> by 2040. The minister highlighted this during his address at the Global Standards Symposium at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, one of the world's largest telecom events. He said, "In India alone, for example, 5G is anticipated to inject an astounding 450 billion dollars into the economy by 2040." The minister emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet or low latency, but is laying the groundwork for <keyword id="20006420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-cities" source="keywords">smart cities</keyword>, advanced infrastructure, and autonomous innovations. Scindia further noted that 5G has already been rolled out across all 36 states and Union Territories, covering 98 per cent of districts and 80 per cent of the population in just 22 months. He said this achievement showcases not only India's technological prowess but also the transformative power of standardized innovation. He added "We are unlocking new Reims of possibility in health care, education and agriculture and Manufacturer" The minister stressed the importance of international collaboration in unlocking the full potential of technologies like 5G, <keyword id="19904566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence" source="keywords">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). He stated that the global standards are key to ensuring that these technologies work harmoniously across borders. "The import of dialogue cannot be overstated. The wonders of 5G the brilliance of artificial intelligence and the interconnected marvels of the Internet of Things. Things are transforming industries, societies and manufacturing processes and economies on a global scale," he said. Scindia also pointed out the need for robust governance in emerging technologies like AI and IoT, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks to address concerns around privacy, bias, and transparency. He called for a comprehensive policy framework to ensure that future innovations, such as the upcoming 6G technology, benefit everyone equitably and do not deepen existing digital divides. "We are today poised at the edge of a new technological era, the dawn of the 6th generation of mobile network 6G and this is a gateway to the future where communication will become boundless where innovation will know no limits and by humanity, interconnectedness becomes the corner stone of our shared global destiny" he said. 5G to inject $450 billion into Indian economy by 2040: Telecom Minister Scindia

"Rather than viewing it merely through the lens of speed and bandwidth, let's start considering connectivity as a holistic experience."He said companies should focus on enhancing 5G's capabilities with other technologies, such as WiFi, and combine them with hardware and other infrastructure rather than relying solely on 5G to solve every business problem. "This approach makes the network more accessible for innovative applications to shape user experiences," he added.Crawford told Business Insider that this could be complex for some businesses. They often need to decide whether the cost and time needed to upgrade infrastructure and equipment to make it 5G-compatible is worth it.BI spoke with Crawford about these challenges, the types of complementary technologies that can help companies boost connectivity, and how they could unlock 5G's full potential.The following has been edited for length and clarity.What types of complementary technologies should companies focus on to enhance 5G's capabilities?WiFi is the most universal technology. We have computers, laptops, and other devices connected to WiFi, or if you're not relying on WiFi, they use some protocol that's cellularly connected. All these things will need to work together, but the one common factor is their touchpoints to the network.There's an entire ecosystem of devices and tool sets and general employee knowledge that is necessary to be built up to support something that is centered on a single technology like 5G.While the complexity of 5G might seem daunting for companies, especially with the added challenges of existing technologies, we have a responsibility to simplify connectivity for service providers, enterprises, and, ultimately, the end users.We're also trying to remove siloes that have existed. A mobile network has always been siloed from the physical broadband network. There are reasons behind it, but now, how do we integrate them to be sure the experience is seamless and flawless?How does breaking down siloes and focusing on complementary technology benefit businesses?If we can shift our mindset, 5G could very well usher in a new age focused on multiaccess user experiences. There is a likely future where consumers will never need to know whether they are connected to WiFi, 4G, 5G, 6G, or whatever next-generation connectivity technology comes next. If experience expectations are being fulfilled, how users are connected won't matter.The network elements for 5G are designed to distribute roles to empower companies with control, access, and insight. It gives a business the tools to operate similarly to how it is today without feeling like they're handing off the communicative arm of its IT to an entity. If the power goes out or the networks go down, how much will it impact your business? No business wants to forecast that risk in their planning.With 5G, that control can be migrated into the business instead of businesses having to hire experts to understand what mobile networks look like and negotiate the handoffs between a public network and a private network. It simplifies all of that.It's a simplification tool that extends and expands the reach of what a business can do today across the globe.What advice do you have for companies to derive the most value out of 5G?The first thing is understanding your use cases and having a good grasp of your existing technology stack. Looking at the big picture is important for understanding your needs today but also making sure that tomorrow isn't forgotten. It's very important that your ecosystem is front and center in your decision-making process.The goal should be simplifying and expanding what you're already capable of. It's a democratization of connectivity and access.Investing in 5G isn't a one-time thing. It's a long-term decision — an ongoing commitment to innovation, development, and opportunity. It's important that you're not buying technology for technology's sake. Be comfortable not knowing everything and trusting your partners.

That includes strengthening local businesses' internet connectivity, he said.Sandeep Raithatha, the head of strategy, innovation, and 5G IoT products at Virgin Media O2, said private 5G networks that were initially deployed in Olympic venues for broadcast-service use could be repurposed for live events."Once installed, these networks can continue to be utilized for future events as well, ensuring a lasting benefit beyond the initial investment," Raithatha told BI.That's been the case for Olympic host cities like London and Tokyo, where 5G installations continue to power connectivity for residents and visitors.<h2 id="6014d88e-fe10-42a7-a8e7-2e9ad0a2a87e">London 2012: Stratford Halo</h2>Virgin Media O2 upgraded London's connectivity infrastructure when the city hosted the Games in 2012."This included installing additional masts around major airports to ensure tourists could get online immediately and deploying small cells around the venues so that fans could consistently connect in densely populated areas, whether to send selfies, stream videos, or share their location for safety reasons," Raithatha said.One key build was the Stratford Halo, which acted as the TV broadcasting tower for the Games. After the event, it became a hub for YouTubers and other content creators because of its gigabit-speed internet connectivity. It was considered revolutionary because the average internet speed in the UK at the time was slower.The planning efforts allowed the Stratford Halo to be repurposed into a residential building two years after the closing ceremony.In the lead-up to the Games, connectivity infrastructure was embedded in the London Underground light-rail network and the Westfield shopping center in Stratford. Communities continue to rely on this technology for internet access.<h2 id="0f74ba14-8f70-4b55-aea6-131d7970ae5f">Tokyo 2020: Tokyo Data Highway</h2>Japan has a reputation as a technology innovator. But its capital, Tokyo, which in 2021 hosted the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, had a meager showing of 5G infrastructure.5G technology wasn't adopted at a consumer level until 2019, and Japan's 5G-infrastructure rollout was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN22R0XP/">delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic</a>. In 2020, just 10 5G towers were installed.But 5G technology became more common by 2021, two years after Tokyo launched its 5G-infrastructure project, the Tokyo Data Highway. Buoyed by the Olympics, the city added dozens of 5G towers to its connectivity system, expanding to 149 installations in 2021.The goal is to have 5G available throughout the city by 2030, though it's unclear how far along the project is.<h2 id="39507179-0379-4d14-9e10-fe6309766453">Beijing 2022: Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway</h2>The 108-mile Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway connected the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics with the rest of China.It linked Beijing to the competition space outside the Chinese capital where events like ski jumping, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing took place. Athletes were able to take the driverless train between the two locations at speeds of up to 217 mph.But the railway's legacy goes beyond the hyperfast transportation it continues to provide; it was also the first high-speed train equipped with 5G coverage.The train route was also lined with 5G signal towers to ensure reliable, high-speed internet. In 2022, the 5G technology was fast enough that train riders could watch the opening ceremony on their personal devices. Now riders can enjoy superfast interest connections while traveling on the railway.

How Olympic host cities have recycled 5G infrastructure to improve locals' internet speeds and connectivity

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 5G rollout has been slow and underwhelming, not delivering on its promised benefits.</li><li>But there are blue skies ahead as 5G advancements finally arrive.</li></ul>At this point, it seems fair to call it: The arrival of 5G has been a little underwhelming.A few years ago, carriers and tech companies were heralding the arrival of 5G and hyping its possibilities. It would have huge capacity and low latency. It would be a boon for autonomous driving and the connected home. 5G would do it all.And then it didn't. Or at least, it hasn't yet.The 5G rollout has been slow and, at times, confusing. Rolling out a new network standard is always a juggling act that requires buy-in from governments, standards bodies, and other stakeholders.Still, there are reasons to be hopeful. Many companies at Mobile World Congress, which took place in late February in Barcelona, discussed new 5G technologies including 5G stand-alone and 5G-Advanced. These could eventually get us to 6G.<h2>More-advanced 5G technology is coming</h2>5G hasn't become widespread because carriers didn't have access from the get-go to the important bands of the spectrum, leading carriers to deploy versions of 5G using a hybrid system that piggybacks off 4G LTE.5G stand-alone has more promise. It's a 5G network that, yes, stands on its own — meaning it's running on its own technology, independent of 4G. Put more simply, it's the version of 5G we were once promised.The concept of 5G stand-alone isn't new, though it's taken time to arrive, largely because of the technical challenges of building a 5G core that delivers wide coverage. 5G stand-alone could allow 5G to flourish as intended.Another technology, called 5G-Advanced (sometimes called 5.5G), effectively moves 5G forward, promising improvements including faster data speeds and reduced latency."We're just right on the cusp of 5G-Advanced," Alex Sinclair, the chief technology officer of the mobile-network lobbying group GSMA, told Business Insider. "That's going to be finalized this year."Carriers and tech companies are heavily discussing 5G-Advanced. Huawei calls its version 5.5G, though that's really just a marketing term for the same technology.Sinclair said the specs for 5G-Advanced are expected to be finalized in the first half of this year. Huawei said at MWC that its version of 5G-Advanced would get "commercial use" in 2024.<h2>New ideas could get us to 6G</h2>It could be another six or seven years before the standard arrives in a meaningful way and we reach the promised land of blazing-fast movie downloads and reliable surgical robots. For that reason, the many discussions about 6G at MWC seemed a little premature.Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights &amp; Strategy, described Qualcomm's Giga-MIMO technology — an antenna array designed to increase 5G's data capacity while boosting the signal coverage — as an interesting approach to push the industry forward."It just kind of gives you that extra band of performance that maybe we'll need once we hit 6G in the next six or seven years," Sag said.Sag said that the industry is in a situation where 5G networks "haven't delivered on the promise they set out five years ago" and that he believes Qualcomm's approach could be the "right path" toward 6G.That's still a way off. For now, Sag said companies should focus on deploying 5G stand-alone, because none of the benefits of 5G-Advanced will be worth it without a fully stand-alone network. Sag described 5G-Advanced as "a motivation to get to stand-alone 5G faster.""I think it's kind of funny that we're talking 6G now, because we haven't actually fully rolled out 5G with stand-alone," Sag said, "and I think 5G with stand-alone will be what people expected 5G to be."

"It's not like we haven't had cellular or wireless-communications technologies in the past, but today we're seeing that 5G has caused a perfect-storm event, where customers who have been struggling with their Industry 4.0 digital-transformation projects, often due to lack of adequate communications technology, are now suddenly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel."What were previously stalled digital transformations have been energized by the reliable connectivity inherent in private 5G connections. For instance, Schneider Electric has turned its factory in Lexington, Kentucky, into the US's first smart factory, using 5G provided by NTT. "Currently, the site showcases IoT connectivity, edge analytics, and predictive analytics to drive sustainability and energy efficiency on a private 5G network," Sandhu said.Alongside Schneider Electric, NTT has customers including Frankfurt Airport (Europe's largest private 5G network) and the city of Las Vegas (the largest private 5G network in the US) signing up to develop private 5G and edge-computing capabilities."NTT is not looking at private 5G in isolation but rather as part of a complete edge strategy," he said.

At the next Olympics, which will be in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024, there will be a mind-boggling amount of tech underpinning its smooth running.According to organizers, there will be 12,000 connected screens, 8,000 WiFi terminals, and 13,000 computers connected by nearly 250,000 miles of fiber-optic cable, which will transmit the games from the stadiums. 5G and other connections will also power access to the venues: The 2024 Paris Olympics will be the first to operate solely with digital — not paper — tickets.<h2>5G testing is already underway for the Paris Olympics</h2>Bertrand Rojat, the chief technology innovation officer at Orange Events, an event-tech company, told Business Insider that Orange is currently testing tech solutions across future Olympic sites to ensure they can handle the games' demands. He said the first wave of tests successfully took place this summer, showing that the network could withstand the kinds of traffic required around a major event such as the Olympics.Those trials will help inform how organizers use 5G throughout the games, with operators deploying <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/las-vegas-private-5g-network-2023-9">private 5G networks</a> in some venues. "These networks will be used, for example, to help deliver high-quality video coverage of the event," Rojat said. Small cameras will get close to the athletes to provide viewers with an immersive experience.That's important, Bruno Marie-Rose, the chief information and technology officer of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, said in a press release. "We want technology to have a direct benefit on the event," he said. "One example of 'useful' innovation is private 5G, which would allow us to broadcast mobile TV images, where wired cabling would be too unwieldy." In that case, 5G could help distribute high-fidelity video over mobile internet.The opening ceremony will also use 5G: At the Paris Olympics, instead of the traditional parade around a stadium, the athletes will move down the Seine River in boats. "To provide immersive video to spectators around the world, we'll have to position cameras on each boat and transmit the footage using Orange's private 5G," Marie-Rose said. "This innovation will make the Games more accessible and enjoyable for all."It'll also help the athletes, Marie-Rose said. "In the near future, everything could be connected, including things that, maybe today, you can't imagine being connected."Despite 5G's ability to power the Internet of Things, or IoT — allowing machines to talk to one another — many founders have a hard time shifting away from how we currently think about connectivity, which requires a level of human involvement.
