The 30-share Sensex climbed 329.15 points to 60,676.12 in early trade. The <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> advanced 92.4 points to 18,096.15. From the Sensex pack, Maruti, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra were the major gainers in initial trade. IndusInd Bank, Tech Mahindra, <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="6357147" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-steel" source="Orion">Tata Steel</keyword> were among the laggards. Asian markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul were quoting in the green, while Shanghai traded lower. The US markets had ended on a positive note on Wednesday. The <keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword> benchmark had settled at 60,346.97, a loss of 224.11 points or 0.37 per cent on Wednesday. The broader NSE Nifty closed lower by 66.30 points or 0.37 per cent at 18,003.75. Meanwhile, the international oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.09 per cent to USD 94.02 per barrel. Foreign institutional investors offloaded Rs 1,397.51 crore from the domestic equities on Wednesday. After Wednesday's retreat, local shares started on a positive note tracking recovery in most of the Asian indices following overnight uptick in the US markets, said Prashanth Tapse - Research Analyst, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. Benchmark indices rebound amid positive global trends

Mumbai, Feb 13 () Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty retreated on Thursday as disappointing macroeconomic data and a sharp rise in the number of new coronavirus cases dampened investor sentiment. The BSE gauge Sensex fell 106.11 points or 0.26 per cent to settle at 41,459.79. The index swung between a high of 41,709.30 and a low of 41,338.31 during the day. Likewise, the NSE benchmark Nifty dropped 26.55 points or 0.22 per cent to close at 12,174.65. On the Sensex chart, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, ONGC, ICICI Bank and Kotak Bank were among the top losers. SBI, Titan, Infosys, Sun Pharma and Tech Mahindra emerged as the major gainers. Of the 30 Sensex constituents, 16 closed in the red while 14 finished with gains. Sectorally, BSE bank, finance and utilities indices were among the major laggards, while consumer durables, IT and teck rose the most. In the broader market, both BSE smallcap and midcap indices outperformed the benchmark. Hurting market sentiment, government data on Wednesday showed that industrial output contracted by 0.3 per cent in December while retail inflation jumped to a 68-month high of 7.59 per cent in January on high food prices. On the currency front, the Indian rupee was trading on a flat note at 71.33 against the US dollar in intra-day trade. Asian stocks closed mostly lower amid mounting concerns over the coronavirus epidemic. The number of fatalities and new cases from China's coronavirus outbreak soared on Thursday under a new diagnostic method, with over 200 more deaths and thousands of new patients. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said global oil demand will suffer its first quarterly drop in a decade as the novel coronavirus has hit the Chinese economy hard and its impact ripples throughout the world. Benchmark indices falter on dismal macro data

Mumbai, Jan 17 () Market benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended on a mixed note after a volatile session on Friday, with gains in Reliance Industries offsetting losses in other heavyweights HDFC, ICICI Bank and TCS.
 After hitting a record intra-day high of 42,063.93, the 30-share BSE Sensex settled 12.81 points, or 0.03 per cent, higher at 41,945.37.
 The broader NSE Nifty, however, ended 3.15 points, or 0.03 per cent, down at 12,352.35.
 On the Sensex chart, Bharti Airtel was the top gainer, rallying 5.47 per cent, after experts said the Supreme Court's rejection of a review of its order that put Rs 1.47 lakh crore liability of past dues on telcos, will weaken Vodafone Idea's ability to compete in the Indian market; in turn, providing an opportunity for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to gain market share.
 Shares of Vodafone Idea plunged 25.21 per cent.
 Ahead of their quarterly earnings, Reliance Industries and HCL Tech advanced up to 2.79 per cent, while TCS fell 0.79 per cent.
 Heavyweight HDFC dropped 1.23 per cent.
 In percentage terms, IndusInd Bank, SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank and L&amp;T were among the top losers.
 On the contrary, Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech and Maruti Suzuki emerged as major gainers. 
 According to traders, domestic investors are awaiting directional cues from key corporate results for cues amid concerns over higher bank non-performing assets and a spike in retail inflation.
 Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended higher. European markets also started on a positive note.
 Brent crude oil futures rose 0.36 per cent to USD 64.86 per barrel.

After a weak start, the 30-share <keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword> Sensex further declined 474.1 points to 58,722.89. On similar lines, the broader <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> fell 171.3 points to 17,484.30. From the Sensex pack, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, <keyword id="45123" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hdfc" source="Orion">HDFC</keyword>, Infosys, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were major laggards in early trade. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers as they bought shares worth Rs 1,144.53 crore on Tuesday, as per exchange data. Benchmark indices fall in early trade amid weak global markets

According to traders, profit-booking emerged at higher levels, dragging <keyword id="9677911" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="benchmark-indices-lower">benchmark indices lower</keyword>. The 30-share BSE index was trading 254.72 points or 0.55 per cent lower at 45,848.78. Similarly, the <keyword id="10338236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="broader-nse-nifty">broader NSE Nifty</keyword> fell 79.60 points or 0.59 per cent to 13,449.50. <keyword id="6355596" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ultratech-cement">UltraTech Cement</keyword> was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding around 2 per cent, followed by Tata Steel, ONGC, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, M&amp;M, Infosys and Reliance Industries. Markets off record high — Sensex drops over 250 points, Nifty tests 13,450

First-time investors, who became stock market participants during the Covid-19 pandemic, are seen to behind a strong rally in the hitherto overlooked <keyword id="135898" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-cap-stocks">small cap stocks</keyword>. Small cap indices of both the BSE and the NSE have clearly led the market rebound and outperformed the benchmarks by wide margins during the past five months, data from stock exchanges shows. Analysts say a wide array of factors are luring new investors into the small cap space, including under-ownership by fund houses and playing out of new themes such as agriculture, chemicals and pharmaceuticals where small cap firms have a sizable presence. "The small cap story is back with a bang with first-time market participants finding hidden opportunities in the space. <keyword id="64751" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Small-caps">Small caps</keyword> led the market recovery from the March lows fuelled by elevated retail participation compared to the pre-Covid-19 levels," said Vinod Nair, Head of <keyword id="9851881" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="research-at-geojit-financial-services">Research at Geojit Financial Services</keyword>. "Increased interests of foreign institutional investors in the space added more legs to the rally in small caps. In my view, we still have more headroom for trading in small caps. For instance, <keyword id="9851880" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nify50">Nify50</keyword> is trading at one year forward price to earnings (P/E) of 22x compared to 16x of <keyword id="8148471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-Smallcap">Nifty SmallCap</keyword> 250 index," said Nair. "Small cap index has quite clearly outperformed the Nifty 50 index during the past five months. Liquidity, under-ownership by fund houses and lower interest rates are the primary factors responsible for the out-performance," said S. Ranganathan, Head of Research at LKP Securities. Between April 1 and August 24, Nifty SmallCap100 Index has notched up a gain of 63 per cent against the broader index Nifty50's rise of 39 per cent, while BSE 250 SmallCap Index rallied 57 per cent compared to Sensex's appreciation of 39 per cent. "Certain segments of the economy like agriculture had a dearth of high quality listed large caps, hence the muted impact of the pandemic on agriculture began manifesting itself in several small and midcap stocks within the sector. Besides, several small cap stocks across a wide gamut of sectors have been beneficiaries of the protectionist measures on account of imposition of duties on imports and the 'Aatmanirbhar' drive in the wake of the pandemic making a genuine case for an up move in stock prices in the small cap space," Ranganathan said, adding that the small cap space is highly under-researched. "Sectors like chemicals, pharmaceuticals and auto components have had positive tailwinds as a fallout of the pandemic and with small caps and midcaps constituting a large part of these sectors we have seen PE expansion as growth visibility appeared to be clear," Ranganathan said. Even within the domestic consumption space which has seen the most adverse impact of the pandemic, the fall in stock prices of small cap stocks during March was more pronounced as compared to large caps which led to a return towards mean reversion during August, analysts added.

Small cap stocks outperform benchmark indices on first-time investors' fancy

Mumbai, Feb 5 () Indian equities notched up their third straight gains on Wednesday as investors felt the need to neutralise budget overreaction and move positively as improved business sentiment and positive global cues augur well. At the closing bell, the BSE gauge Sensex was 0.87 per cent or 353.28 points higher at 41,142.66. The index has gained over 1,407 points or 3.54 per cent over the last three sessions. While, the NSE Nifty rose 109.50 points, or 0.91 per cent, to settle at 12,089.15 -- taking the three-day gains to 427.30 points or 3.66 per cent. Market gains were driven mainly by rate-sensitive stocks ahead of the Reserve Bank's monetary policy announcement on Thursday. Besides, reports of a breakthrough in coronavirus treatment enthused investors. Analysts said that buoyancy in Indian equities accelerated during the afternoon trade as India's service sector growth for January hit a seven-year high. On the Sensex chart, Tata Steel was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 5.14 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC, TCS, L&amp;T and Reliance Industries. On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp was the top laggard, shedding 3.83 per cent. PowerGrid, Maruti, Asian Paints and NTPC too ended with losses. Sectorally, BSE metal, telecom, realty, industrials, capital goods, energy, oil and gas, finance, FMCG and IT indices ended up to 2.90 per cent higher, while power and utilities indices slipped in the red. Broader BSE midcap and smallcap indices rallied up to 1.35 per cent. "Indian markets are mirroring the global markets and trading on a higher note powered by rate-sensitive stocks. With the overreaction following the budget mostly done with, focus will shift to how global events and Q3 results pan out. With Inflation being on the higher side there is no further room left for the central bank to tweak rates and is expected to continue its accommodative stance in the policy due tomorrow," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, said. India's services sector activity surged to a seven-year high in January driven by sharp increase in new business orders, leading to job creation and business optimism amid favourable market conditions, a monthly IHS Markit survey said. Earlier this week, another survey said the country's manufacturing sector activity climbed to a near eight-year high in January. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil futures advanced 2.76 per cent to USD 55.45 per barrel. On the currency front, the Indian rupee ended flat at 71.24 per US dollar. On the global arena, positive global cues persisted after Chinese policymakers promised to unveil more measures to support an economy jolted by a coronavirus outbreak. With reports of a breakthrough in coronavirus treatment doing the rounds, global stocks surged. Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul settled up to 1.25 per cent higher.
