They party like there’s no tomorrow, and here you are, stuck in a boring, ultra-disciplined but responsible routine that feels completely devoid of any independence, and mostly, funds. But of late, things are changing. This sibling is in massive trouble and just cannot escape the parent’s wrath anymore. Long story short, the party is over, and it is time to go back home. The rising defaults on this sibling’s part have now begun pulling the entire house down, thereby attracting the regulator’s ire. <h2>The Wild West of <keyword id="113684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microfinance" source="Orion">microfinance</keyword> and unsecured loans</h2>It's hard to ignore the issues with microfinance and unsecured loans in India. Many saw them as a small gamble and ignored the rising defaults much like the younger siblings’ tantrums, and now they find themselves in hot waters. The skyrocketing instances of non-payments aren't a micro-issue anymore and are threatening the stability of the entire banking system. In the quarter ended September 30, 2024, 5 of India’s 8 largest private sector <keyword id="19934118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banks" source="keywords">banks</keyword> reported a steep rise in their bad loan book, mostly thanks to microfinance loans. Some banks, in a bid to strengthen their fortress against these <keyword id="142154" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bad-loans" source="Orion">bad loans</keyword>, have significantly upped their provisions. For instance, IndusInd Bank set aside Rs 525 crore during July and September 2024 to battle the menace of defaults on microfinance loans, which make up about 9% of its total loan book. See, banks rely heavily on their interest income, which they earn from advancing loans. Any loan where the borrower has not paid interest to the bank or defaulted for 90 days or more becomes bad, i.e. an NPA, or non-performing asset for the bank. And who likes things going bad? Simply put, there has been a steep rise in three areas, much to the dislike of banks and MFIs (micro-finance institutions). But hey, it's mostly their doing! <ol><li>GNPA ratio (gross net performing assets): The quantum of non-performing assets a bank has in proportion to its total assets.</li><li>Provision: The amount banks set aside to take care of such NPAs.</li><li>Slippage ratio: The rate at which good girls go bad, or the speed at which good loans turn into NPAs</li></ol>But how are these plaguing the Indian banking sector? And what does the road ahead look like? We decode it for you. <h2> Microfinance: A not-so-micro-menace</h2>Microfinance loans were initially brought forth for low-income households and individuals i.e. for those who might not generally have access to traditional ways of credit, like bank loans and more. They don’t require collateral or an asset to be pledged in lieu of the loan, making it a tad bit easier for borrowers. As of June 2024, the amount of outstanding loans in the microfinance industry stood at a staggering Rs 4,20,256 crore. Of this, NBFC-MFIs accounted for 40% and banks made for 33% of these. In 2022, RBI, in a bid to inspire some competition in this space, did something radical-they did away with the ceiling on how much interest MFIs could charge their customers. Previously, MFIs could add up to 12% to their cost of acquiring funds to determine the final interest rate chargeable to the consumer. So, assuming that Bank A incurs a 5% cost to acquire funds for further loaning, A could charge up to 17% interest from the end consumer. So, interest rates were in the hands of MFIs, and boy, did they have a gala time with it. Instead of spurring some healthy competition, as RBI expected, MFIs and banks went rogue and all guns blazing, competing for the title of “Who will charge the highest interest?” Recently, RBI banned 4 microfinance institutions (MFIs), namely Asirvad Micro Finance Limited, Arohan Financial Services Limited, DMI Finance Private Limited, and <keyword id="20117932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="navi-finserv" source="keywords">Navi Finserv</keyword> from disbursing loans effective October 21, 2024. Why? Because they were charging 14% extra interest over their original cost of funds. To maintain their loan books (and pockets), banks and NBFCs resorted to shady practices like netting off loans, which RBI has now advised MFIs against. Here, lenders allow borrowers to settle a previous outstanding loan by issuing them a new loan! As crazy as it sounds, it helped banks to report less of their total assets as NPAs, since the new credit would cover pending instalments of the borrower’s previous loan. Then there was the issue of borrowers overleveraging, i.e. taking multiple loans using different IDs from various lenders and then failing to honour any of them. The consequence? Banks and NBFCs end up with massive NPAs. Data from credit bureaus suggests that over the last quarter, there was a 17.2% rise in the number of borrowers who had 5 or more active loans at the same time. <h2>Growth &gt; Caution</h2>It's an age-old tale unfolding yet again in India’s banking sector- Icarus flew too close to the sun and eventually, fell to its death. Between April and June 2024, NBFCs microfinance portfolio jumped by 2.7%. If you see this in terms of loan sources, microfinance loans issued by banks grew by 11.2% in Q1FY25. But the same portfolio in NBFCs swelled by almost double-23.9%. While most of these loans had an average ticket size between Rs 30,000-50,000, there was a sharp spike in the number of loans that had a ticket size of Rs 80,000 or more. Data suggests that as of March 2024, more than 12% of all microfinance borrowers had over 4 or more active loans. In dating parlance, this is a classic case of borrowers going polyamorous, minus the honesty and transparency. Not the best of situations, you'd agree! <h2>Will banks and NBFCs stand up to this stress?</h2>If their results for Q2FY25 are to be believed, NBFCs are not handling the pressure all that well. Or even slightly well. Only a few banks like Bank of Baroda (BoB), ICICI, and Indian Bank were up for the battle, even witnessing a decline in their loan delinquencies. Some others, like IndusInd Bank, saw their stock dip by a massive 16.2% over the last 5 days. Its slippages in the previous quarter burgeoned from Rs 15.3 billion in Q1FY25 to Rs 17.9 billion in Q2. As a result, the bank pushed a staggeringly high amount of money to create an NPA cushion for itself. While its management has highlighted its preference for secured lending, that was hardly reflected in its actions during the quarter, where growth in unsecured personal loans remained exceptionally high at over 7% on a QoQ basis. Turns out, only 44% of customers in IndusInd Banks’ microfinance loan portfolio were exclusive to it. The rest 47% were, you guessed it right-polyamorous! 27% had borrowed from another lender as well, apart from IndusInd Bank, while 20% were those who had outstanding loans with two other lenders, apart from IndusInd Bank. IndusInd Bank’s credit card segment did not miss the NPA bus and accounted for 7-8% of its GNPAs. Canara Bank’s total slippages during the previous quarter jumped to Rs 11.1 billion, up by 24.7% QoQ, and making up for 3.6% of its total loans. As for Bandhan Bank, its gross NPA for Q2FY25 inched up on a QoQ basis, up from 4.23% in Q1, to 4.68% in the second quarter. IDFC Bank’s heavy provisioning for its NPAs marred its profits significantly, causing its PAT (profit after tax) to dip by 73% on a YoY basis. Data from ICRA Analytics suggest that the AUM (asset under management) growth in microfinance loans and unsecured (personal and business) loans by the NBFCs will moderate to 10-12% and 19-21%, respectively, in FY2025 compared to 30% and 38%, in FY2024. Says A M Karthik, Senior Vice President &amp; Co-Group Head, Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA, “As bank funds constitute a larger share in the overall funding of NBFCs, a slower credit flow from banks to the NBFCs will compress their AUM growth. The NBFCs in unsecured and digital lending businesses shall face a higher squeeze in funding compared to others, and the unsecured lending space will continue to be a source of stress in the near term.” There has been uninhibited growth in <keyword id="6051027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unsecured-loan" source="Orion">unsecured loan</keyword>s, apart from just the microfinance segment. For instance, Axis Bank’s gross slippages jumped by Rs 4,443 crore, largely thanks to its unsecured business. The same is the case with Yes Bank, which saw 35–40% of its retail slippages emerging from the unsecured loan portfolio. <keyword id="6376194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kotak-mahindra" source="Orion">Kotak Mahindra</keyword> Bank was also quick to follow Yes Bank’s suit, with around 35%-40% of its slippages coming from credit cards. <h2>How is the road ahead?</h2>While RBI has just cracked its whip and served a warning at the moment, experts at Morgan Stanley believe that more changes (read regulatory lashes) are underway. Moreover, with both festive and wedding seasons underway in our country, unsecured lending might pick up momentum, much to the disdain of the calibrated approach banks have been taking towards it so far. But if the situation doesn't improve, RBI will not waste any time in becoming the typical tyrannical <keyword id="19897820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bollywood" source="keywords">Bollywood</keyword> headmaster who runs his dominion with an iron fist. However, the real impact of COVID-19 lockdown on rural India will be reflected in the earnings from <keyword id="2240511" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandhan-Bank">Bandhan Bank</keyword> — one of the country’s biggest microfinance institutions and a listed bank since March 2018 — to be announced tomorrow, May 12. So far, the share price reflects some optimism. It’s up over 54% since the lockdown starting March 25. However, it is still available at less than half the price compared to December-end. The recent controversies in the banking sector — with PMC Bank going under and Yes Bank needing the Reserve Bank of India to come to its rescue — have eroded investor confidence leaving recovery open to question. Even with Bandhan Bank’s healthy liquidity and asset diversification, asset quality stress will remain a key parameter to watch out for. An initial strike is inevitable, but analysts are divided on how long it will take the bank to recover. Bandhan Bank’s profits fall by 29% even though asset quality shows improvement

Kolkata, Apr 15 () Private lender Bandhan Bank doesnot apprehend any repayment issues owing to the nationwidelockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19, a top bankofficial said.Recovery, however, has been halted at present due tothe curbs.MD and CEO of Bandhan Bank Chandrasekhar Ghosh saidrepayments should not be a cause for concern as borrowers'businesses are continuing."Recovery of micro loans from borrowers have stoppedfrom March 23," Ghosh told .He said since bank personnel cannot physically go tocollect the loan repayment amount, the outstanding will remainat the previous level.Ghosh said interest will be recovered at the time ofrepayment, irrespective of whether the customer opted for thethree-month RBI moratorium."We are explaining to our customers that the costsinvolved in opting for the moratorium are high since theinterest will be compounded at the time of repayment," anotherbank official said.In case of micro-finance, repayments are made on aweekly basis (equated weekly instalments), and not as EMIs.The official said most of the bank's customers areapprised of the costs of opting for the moratorium and areagreeable to repay as per schedule.Earlier during the start of the bank in August 2015,exposure to the micro-banking sector was almost 80 per cent oftotal advances.Ghosh had earlier said the lender's aim is to lowerthe micro-banking exposure to 50 per cent. Lockdown: Bandhan Bank sees no problem in loan repayments

<keyword id="145807" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bandhan-Financial-Services">Bandhan Financial Services</keyword> has overcome all hurdles and now is waiting for <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> to get final licence. 
 Raising funds was the last glitch and <keyword id="6373634" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bandhan">Bandhan</keyword> Financial Services overcame it as it raised Rs 1020 crore equity from International Finance Corporation (IFC), Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC and Small Industries Development Bank of India. 
 
Chairman and Managing Director Chandra Shekhar Ghosh said that they had received funds and were expected the central bank to issue it the final license. 
 
The latest equity infusion would take Bandhan's net worth to Rs 2,616 crore. 
 
GIC, the first time investor in Bandhan, has invested Rs 640.87 crore while IFC has pumped in Rs 344 crore into Bandhan, India's first microfinance lender to get an in-principle approval to set up a bank. Sidbi has invested Rs 35 crore afresh. 
 
IFC's shareholding in the company will be raised from 10.9%. However, Ghosh did not divulge the latest shareholding structure and Sidbi is also an existing shareholder. 
 
Bandhan Bank is likely to start banking operation with 500-600 branches and 4,000 officials at the branches and the headquarters. There would be more than 10,000 field workers who will make the last mile connection between the new bank and its customers. 
 
After being recognised as a bank, Bandhan will cater to rural and economically weaker segment. It's outstanding loan book now stands at Rs 10,000 crore, Ghosh told the Economic Times.

 Granting of banking licence to Bandhan has in fact proved to be a boost to the <keyword id="113684" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="microfinance">microfinance</keyword> industry in the country which has been trying to gain momentum after the crisis in Andhra Pradesh in 2010 when the state government took tough regulatory measures, leading to the closure of many <keyword id="113682" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MFIs">MFIs</keyword>, after indebtedness to these firms prompted several farmers to commit suicide. 
 
Microfinance, which was non-existent till early seventies, came into being in 1974 when Dr Muhammad Yunus, an economics professor born in Chittagong in Bangladesh (who went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006), loaned $27 to 42 poor women to pay off loan they had taken from local loan sharks who charged exorbitant interest. That marked the birth of microfinance with the key idea of providing the poor small loans for their micro-enterprises to help them come out of poverty. The growth of Grameen Bank, set up by Yunus to help the poor fight poverty by becoming entrepreneurs, to an institution lending more than $1 billion a year to the have-nots, especially women, has proven that microfinance has a universal social applicability. 
 
The microfinance industry in India witnessed significant growth in the years preceding the global financial crisis in 2008. SKS, which then was the country’s biggest microfinance firm with a $1.2 billion loan book, went public in July 2010. The $350 million offering was oversubscribed more than 13 times. But just a few months after SKS’ public offering, the AP microfinance crisis followed and things took an ugly turn. As farmers’ suicides abounded, AP government stiffened rules and all loans distributed in the state were written off, bringing the industry to a grinding halt as AP accounted for the bulk of microfinance lending disbursed in the country till then. 
 After years of muted growth, the industry has started showing signs of renewal, albeit under stricter norms issued by RBI. The investors have started responding to the sector’s renewed vigor. Last year, Indian microlenders raised a combined $470 million from investors such as Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia and <keyword id="166412" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="International-finance-corporation">International Finance Corporation</keyword>. Pune-based Suryoday Microfinance which raised Rs 27 crore led IFC; Bhubaneshwar-based Annapurna Microfinance which raised Rs 30 crore from Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries and others and Bangalore-based Grameen Koota which raised Rs 80 crore from MicroVentures Investments are specific examples. Deals worth another $100 million are said to be in the pipeline, initiated by investors who are seeing MFIs as potential banks—the investment today may help them own part of a bank tomorrow—as illustrated by Bandhan. 
 
While investors are bullish, there are those who say that the industry is headed in the wrong director from a social perspective. For decades, microfinance was mainly promoted by activists working for charities and NGOs, driven by a sense of social mission to improve the lot of the poor. But over the last decade, it has transformed into a global enterprise (the global commercial microfinance industry is expected to grow 20 per cent a year in the near future), with a portfolio worth $81 billion driven by profit more than social responsibility. 
 
Also, the increasing interest rates charged by MFIs from impoverished borrowers—though global average interest rate is estimated at 37%, rates are as high as 70% in some markets while in India rates hover around 24-28%--seem to betray one of the key objectives of microfinance—providing small loans to the poor at an affordable cost. 
 
However, going by the constructive and socially responsible role played by Grameen Bank in alleviating poverty in Bangladesh by helping transforming millions of poor into small entrepreneurs, one hopes the bank’s peers in India will follow suit, playing the dual role of agents of social change in fighting poverty while creating wealth through transparent business practices, thus contributing to overall economic growth.

Between Profit And Social Responsibility?

New Delhi, Jan 14 () Bandhan Bank on Tuesday reported over two-fold jump in net profit to Rs 731.03 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2019.
The private sector lender had logged a profit of Rs 331.25 crore in October-December, 2018-19.
Total income increased to Rs 3,075.31 crore in the quarter under review as against Rs 1,883.65 crore in the year-ago period, Bandhan Bank said in a statement.
Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined to 1.93 per cent of the total advances during the quarter, against 2.41 per cent at the end of third quarter of the previous fiscal.
However, net NPAs of the bank rose slightly to 0.81 per cent in the quarter from 0.70 per cent of the net advances.
During the quarter, the bank made additional provision of Rs 200 crore on standard advances in microfinance portfolio after evaluating the risk observed in certain areas of a northeastern state, though having a dwindling effect. 
 The Net Interest Income grew 37.10 per cent to Rs 1,541 crore as against Rs 1,124 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
 "The merger of erstwhile Gruh Finance with Bandhan Bank had been approved by the RBI, Competition Commission of India, stock exchanges, respective shareholders and creditors of each entities as applicable and the National Company Law Tribunals (NCLT) Bench at Kolkata and Ahmedabad, with appointed date as January 1, 2019 and effective date as October 17, 2019," it said. 
Accordingly, the scheme had been given effect to in the financial results for December quarter, it said, adding, the figures for the quarter are not comparable with the corresponding figures of the previous year/periods in view of the amalgamation. 
The Committee of Directors of the bank at its meeting held on October 21, 2019 has approved the allotment of 41,69,48,659 equity shares of face value of Rs 10 each, fully paid up, to the eligible equity shareholders of erstwhile Gruh Finance based on record date of October 17, 2019. DP

Bandhan Bank Q3 profit surges over two-fold to Rs 731 cr

The MFI sector is rapidly expanding after the <keyword id="113684" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="microfinance">microfinance</keyword> crisis in Andhra Pradesh in 2010 with gross loan portfolio (glp) rising to 61 per cent in FY 15. According to data compiled by industry regulatory body Microfinance Institutions Network (<keyword id="187937" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="MFIN">MFIN</keyword>) in its 13th issue of <keyword id="1098591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MicroMeter">Micrometer</keyword>, MFIs have attracted 84 per cent more funding in FY 2014-15 than previous this fiscal. 
 
Over the past three years, microcredit has been a boost for millions of people with low income who often have limited access to traditional financial services. According to the data released by MFIN, MFIs provided micro-credit to over 30.5 million borrowers for FY 15, an increase of 29 per cent. 
 
“The results for 2014-15 are a striking testimony to the resurgence of the industry and the extremely large core demand for micro credit. Over the last twelve months the PMJDY’s achievements promoting savings and micro finance industry’s achievements in promoting micro-credit have quite dramatically transformed the financial landscape in the country”, said Alok Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, MFIN. 
 
Varam, Svatantrata and Adhikar were the top three MFIs in terms of highest growth rates in FY 15 over FY 14. MFIs are now more evenly distributed across various regions in the country. There have not only been more branches set up (20 per cent increase), but employee strength grew too by 8 per cent. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka are the top states in terms of number of branches. 
 Going by the demand, MFIs are expanding their operations too. One might remember that <keyword id="6373634" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bandhan">Bandhan</keyword> Financial Services, a leading MFI is likely to get a final nod to start banking operations by May end. 
 
Majority of debt funding came from banks as securitisation of MFIs increased by 39 per cent. Average loan amount disbursed per account increased by 14 per cent, which stood at Rs 16,327. These positive indicators indicate the growth of small businesses and employment rate over the years. Although study has shown that microfinance do not affect the economy hugely, nonetheless it has attracted foreign investors over the years, which are likely to increase in the future. 
 Microfinance was an initiative to provide financial services. Though it continues to do solely that, its indirect contributions to the economy cannot be downtrodden by studies and jargons. In a way, what <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s ‘Make in India’ campaign aims for, manufacturing everything indigenously, can be achieved by investing in these small businesses and entrepreneurial enterprises supported by MFIs. Now that the sector’s indicators are all positive, it is a good time to start.

Microfinance gross loan portfolio grew by 61% FY15: MFIN

The bank has just <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/ujjivan-small-finance-bank-gets-sebis-go-ahead-for-rs-1200-crore-ipo/articleshow/71707806.cms">received </a>a nod from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to go ahead with an IPO. It plans to raise ₹1,200 crore from the public. According to reports, the bank had filed its request with the government body in August. The bank also released its <keyword id="56260" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-earnings">Q2 earnings</keyword> report which showed that it posted a profit of ₹93 crore. And, the profits jumped by 111%. "The quarter was good for us. The transition phase is over with most of our branches converting into the banking outlets. Our focus now is on growth," Ujjivan Financial Services' managing director and CEO, Ittira Davis, told PTI. In May 2019, the bank had roped in HDFC Bank's digital banking head Nitin Chugh as its managing director and CEO. In the same month, Flipkart founder Sachin Bansal too joined the bank as an independent director. With its parent company Ujjivan Financial Services, the bank started as a microfinance company but transformed into a small finance bank in 2017. It commenced operations with five pilot branches in Bengaluru. Today, it has over 180 branches across 20 states. Yet another bank which lends <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/bandhan-bank-stock-hits-upper-circuit-as-its-believed-to-enter-msci/articleshow/71536698.cms">to rural women</a>, Bandhan Bank too has taken large strides this month. The bank’s stock will be listed at MSCI index in New York, giving it access to international investors. This is a large feat for a five-year old bank, especially amidst a brewing crisis in the Indian banking sector.
