India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, often seen as a key player in the country’s clean energy transition, has been called “irrelevant” without government <keyword id="20231384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="incentives" source="keywords">incentives</keyword> by a recent Bernstein research report. The report highlights the serious challenges automakers face in achieving profitability and scaling operations in the EV segment, which remains heavily reliant on financial support from the government. <h2>Struggling to achieve profitability</h2>The Bernstein report reveals that generating profitable margins in the Indian EV sector is proving to be an uphill battle for automakers. “It is tough to generate sufficient margins and get scale in EVs. Even with hefty incentives, incumbent OEMs are still unprofitable,” the report stated. High production costs, limited infrastructure, and relatively low consumer demand all contribute to this issue. Traditional automakers, particularly in India’s two-wheeler market, are facing significant financial losses. According to Bernstein, while some niche startups may survive, their long-term market share will likely remain limited, and competition will primarily be between established original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The key challenge for these OEMs is achieving the scale and cost reductions required to compete with the well-entrenched internal combustion engine (ICE) sector. <h2>Reliance on incentives</h2>One of the most striking conclusions from Bernstein’s analysis is the deep reliance of the EV sector on government subsidies. Without these incentives, the <keyword id="19952060" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV-Industry" source="keywords">EV industry</keyword> would be unable to compete with traditional ICE vehicles. “The EV Industry is not relevant without incentives currently, and to break the ICE sector, it needs intense focus, scale, and continued cost downs,” the report emphasised. This indicates that while government schemes like GST benefits have helped reduce the cost difference between EVs and ICE vehicles, they are not enough to ensure the long-term sustainability of the EV sector. Bernstein estimates that the overall EV two-wheeler industry in India generates around USD 1.3 billion in annual revenues, but without government support, the sector incurs an EBIT loss of approximately USD 300-400 million. The high cost structure of EVs, combined with the relatively low sales volumes, makes it difficult for companies to operate without subsidies. <h2>Established players face mixed fortunes</h2>Among India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturers, Bernstein noted that <keyword id="19897354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajaj-Auto" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bajaj Auto" meta.hostid="265" meta.entityid="Bajaj Auto">Bajaj Auto</keyword> and <keyword id="20326963" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TVS-Motors" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="TVS Motors" meta.hostid="265" meta.entityid="TVS Motors">TVS Motors</keyword> are on a similar footing in terms of their performance in the EV space. Bajaj Auto received an "Outperform" rating from Bernstein due to its lower valuations, while TVS Motors was rated "Market Perform" after it was found to be losing approximately 7.5% in EBITDA, or Rs 11,000 per vehicle, despite generating a gross profit margin of 7% without subsidies. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113631992" title="Tata Nexon EV with a bigger battery launched starting at ₹13.99 lakh" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Hero MotoCorp, a major player in India’s automotive market, lags behind both Bajaj and TVS in terms of its EV offerings. Interestingly, <keyword id="19897349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola Electric" meta.hostid="265" meta.entityid="Ola Electric">Ola Electric</keyword> (Ola-E) stands out as a startup that has been able to generate positive operating earnings (EBITDA) from its premium models like the S1 Pro and S1 Air, even as it incurs losses on its mass-market model, the S1X. “Our analysis indicates that Ola-E is generating positive operating EBITDA from its premium models, such as the S1 Pro and S1 Air while incurring a loss on its mass-market model, the S1X,” the report said. While Ola has shown some promise, it too remains heavily dependent on subsidies to maintain its financial health. <h2>Long-term outlook</h2>Bernstein’s report paints a challenging picture for the future of India’s EV sector, suggesting that while dominant startups may survive, the majority of the competition will come from traditional automakers. Why has Bernstein called India’s EV sector 'irrelevant'?

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

Electric two-wheeler sales declined in August 2024, but year-on-year growth continues

The auto major had reported a net profit of Rs 2,623.6 crore in the year-ago period, Maruti Suzuki India said in a regulatory filing. "For the first time, the company surpassed annual total sales milestone of 2 million units in FY24. The company continued to be the top exporter for the third consecutive year, now contributing 41.8 per cent of total passenger vehicle exports from India," the company stated. Maruti Suzuki shares were trading at Rs 12,687.05 apiece at the day's close, down 1.7 per cent from its previous close on the BSE. Maruti Suzuki Q4 net profit rises 47.8% to ₹3,877.8 crore

The company had posted a profit of Rs 127.74 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, <keyword id="19946643" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Forge" source="keywords">Bharat Forge</keyword> said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 4,164.21 crore as against Rs 3,629.05 crore in the year-ago period, it added. Total expenses in the fourth quarter were higher at Rs 3,843.55 crore as compared to Rs 3,469.05 crore in the same period a year ago. The Board of Directors at its meeting held on May 8, 2024, recommended a final dividend of Rs 6.50 per equity share of the face value of Rs 2 for the financial year ended March 31, 2024, subject to approval of shareholders at the ensuing annual general meeting, Bharat Forge said. For the fiscal ended March 31, net profit was at Rs 910.16 crore as compared to Rs 508.39 crore in the previous fiscal, it added. Consolidated revenue from operations in FY24 was at Rs 15,682.07 crore as against Rs 12,910.26 crore in FY23, the filing said. Bharat Forge Q4 profit rises 77% at ₹227.12 crore

New Delhi, <keyword id="119741" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajaj-Electricals" source="Orion">Bajaj Electricals</keyword> Ltd on Monday reported a 56 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 27.28 crore for the September quarter on account of weak consumer demand. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 62 crore in the July-September period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its net sales declined 3.76 per cent to Rs 1,107.40 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal as against Rs 1,150.77 crore in the year-ago period. "The company has achieved a stable performance amidst a weak consumer demand sentiment," its chairman Shekhar Bajaj said in an earnings statement. Bajaj Electricals' total expenses in the September quarter rose 1.2 per cent to Rs 1,097.11 crore. Its revenue from consumer products fell 2.86 per cent to Rs 857.57 crore as against Rs 882.87 crore in the corresponding quarter in the preceding fiscal year. Similarly, revenue from the lighting solutions segment declined 7.42 per cent to Rs 255.25 crore in comparison to Rs 275.73 crore a year ago. "Consumer Products and Lighting Solutions revenues have contracted by 2.9 per cent and 7.4 per cent, respectively, for the quarter, due to demand slowdown and pricing constraints," the company said. For the September quarter, the company's total revenue from operations, which includes other operating income, stood at Rs 1,112.82 crore, down 3.95 per cent. Its total income in the reported quarter fell 1.81 per cent to Rs 1,142.26 crore. "Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the demand and continue to focus on our long-term strategic objectives with a continued push on new products and brand strengthening," the chairman said. The order book of Bajaj Electricals' was Rs 144 crore as of July 1, 2023, for Professional Lighting Projects. The EPC (Engineering Procurement &amp; Construction) segment has been demerged from September 1, 2023, and has a positive outlook for the future. Shares of Bajaj Electricals were trading marginally higher at Rs 1,042 apiece on the BSE.

Bajaj Electricals Q2 2023-24 profit decline by 56% to Rs 27.3 crore

The Pune-based company had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,719 crore in the year-ago period. Total income increased to Rs 11,207 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 10,537 crore a year ago, Bajaj Auto said in a regulatory filing. Bajaj Auto said its revenue from operations registered a new high of Rs 10,777 crore, up 6% year-on-year (YoY). In terms of volume, Bajaj said it sold a total of 10,53,953 units in the quarter under review, down 8% from 11,51,012 units in the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales in the domestic market were down 19% to 5,05,320 units in Q2 as compared to 6,21,134 units in the year-ago period, while exports were at 3,76,263 units as against 3,97,900 units last year, down 5%. Total three-wheeler sales were at 1,72,370 units in the quarter under review as against 1,31,978 units in the corresponding period a year ago, up 31%. In the domestic market, the company said it clocked its highest-ever quarterly sales at 1,32,236 units as against 73,241 units last year, registering an increase of 81%. Addressing reporters in a virtual earnings call, Bajaj Auto Executive Director Rakesh Sharma said the company has been able to deliver "record breaking" performance in the midst of difficult international trading conditions. He said the drop in volumes of two-wheelers was due to the high base effect of the corresponding period last fiscal. Led by strong performance in the 125cc and above motorcycle segment, Sharma said Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share, which, along with better product mix, resulted in better revenue realisation. The domestic business registered a new peak, on the back of six successive quarters of double-digit growth, he added. On the company's electric two-wheeler brand <keyword id="409918" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chetak" source="Orion">Chetak</keyword>, Sharma said after sorting out supply chain issues since March-April this year, Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share in the electric two-wheeler segment to 11% in Q2, up from 3% in FY23. The portfolio of the brand would also be expanded, he said, adding that the sales network of Chetak is present in 120 cities as against 90 in the previous quarter. Asked about the penetration of electric two-wheelers, he said it is at around 5% of the overall two-wheeler industry and in the September quarter, it has been "stuck" at monthly sales of about 65,000 units due to increase in prices after the reduction in FAME II subsidy. It has led to consolidation with the top-five players commanding 75% of the market as compared to 50% earlier and the bottom players have been weakened and severely hit. Sharma said one needs to wait and see how electric two-wheelers will grow in future as it will depend on the continuation or changes in the FAME scheme. Commenting on the performance of premium bike <keyword id="52525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="triumph" source="Orion">Triumph</keyword>, he said it has been received extremely well in the market with the model clocking 8,000 units in the first one and half months of deliveries since August. Bajaj Auto will increase monthly production of the model to 10,000 units by the fourth quarter of FY24, up from 7,000 units currently. The company is also planning to start exports of Triumph bikes in the third quarter, while work on taking the brand experience to over 100 cities by the year end is on track from 26 currently, he added. Asked about the company's new launches, Sharma said there will be six upgrades and new launches in the 125 cc and above segment in the next four to five months starting after Diwali. On exports, he said a slow and steady recovery is expected considering the current global geopolitical situation and the difficulties in the financial system. Bajaj Auto said it sustained strong cash generation by adding over Rs 3,600 crore of free cash flow in the first half of the current fiscal. Shares of the company ended marginally up at 5,143.80 apiece on the BSE on Wednesday.

The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 5,496.04 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,19,986.31 crore, as compared to Rs 1,05,932.35 crore in the year-ago period. In <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24, Tata Motors said all three auto businesses delivered strong performance. The company's British arm Jaguar Land Rover had "another record-breaking quarter in Q4 FY24. Revenue for the quarter was 7.9 billion pounds, up 11 per cent versus Q4 FY23", Tata Motors said. JLR's Profit After Tax (PAT) in Q4 was 1.4 billion pounds as against a profit of 259 million pounds in the same quarter a year ago, it added. The Board of Directors have recommended a final dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share and a special dividend of Rs 3 per ordinary share and Rs 3.10 per 'A' ordinary share subject to approval by the shareholders. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2024, consolidated net profit was at Rs 31,806.75 crore as compared to Rs 2,689.87 crore in the previous fiscal, the company said. In FY24, total consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 4,37,927.77 crore as compared to Rs 3,45,966.97 crore in FY23. <keyword id="20430970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors-group" source="keywords">Tata Motors Group</keyword> Chief Financial Officer, PB Balaji said in FY24 the Tata Motors Group delivered its highest-ever revenues, profits, and free cash flows. "The India business is now debt-free, and we are on track to become net automotive debt-free on a consolidated basis in FY25. The businesses are executing well on their distinct strategies and therefore, we are confident of sustaining this strong performance in the coming years," he added. JLR's revenues for FY24 were 29 billion pounds, its highest-ever full-year revenue and up 27 per cent compared to the prior year, while PAT for FY24 was 2.6 billion pounds. "We have delivered a record financial performance for the company, generating free cash flow of 2.3 billion pound, enabling us to reduce net debt to 0.7 billion pound," JLR Chief Executive Officer Adrian Mardell said. The foundation of this performance was the sustained global demand for JLR's modern luxury vehicles, led by Range Rover and Defender brands, underpinned by a consistent focus on operational improvement, he added. Tata Commercial Vehicles' Q4 FY24 revenue was at Rs 21,600 crore, while FY24 revenue was Rs 78,800 crore. In Q4 FY24, domestic wholesale commercial vehicles (CV) volumes were 1,04,600 units, lower 7 per cent year-on-year on account of increased pre-buy in Q4 FY23 due to BS6 Phase II transition, the company said. Tata Motors Ltd Executive Director Girish Wagh said the Indian CV industry grew by a modest 2 per cent in volumes during FY24, impacted by a high base effect of FY23, elections held across five states and the announcement of general elections. "Our sharp focus on profitable growth resulted in the CV business recording its highest-ever revenues of Rs 78,800 crore and profits of Rs 6,100 crore in FY24. Going forward, we will intensify our efforts to grow market share, profitably and consistently, in every business segment by delivering more value to customers with innovative products, smarter services and holistic mobility solutions," he added. Tata Passenger Vehicles clocked revenue of Rs 14,400 crore in Q4 while for the full year FY24 it was at Rs 52,400 crore. In Q4, Passenger Vehicle (PV) volumes were at 1,55,600 units, up 14.8 per cent from the year-ago period, supported by new SUV facelifts and multiple power trains, the company said. "Passenger vehicle sales in India set a record in FY24 with over 4.2 million units sold, driven by SUVs (50 per cent of overall sales) and emission-friendly powertrains. Tata Motors recorded its third consecutive year of highest sales volumes with 6 per cent growth in wholesales and 10 per cent in retail sales over FY23," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said. The company sold 73,800 EVs during the year, marking a 48 per cent increase as compared to FY23 and crossed a milestone of 1.5 lakh cumulative EV production, he added. Tata Motors Q4 consolidated net profit jumps over 3-fold at ₹17,528.59 crore

Its consolidated net profit of Rs 450.58 crore in January-March - the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023-24 - compares to Rs 722.48 crore net profit in the same period last year and Rs 1,888.45 crore earning in the preceding quarter, according to a stock exchange filing by the company. The firm, which incubates business from airports to data centres, reported an 8 per cent decline in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) at Rs 3,646 crore in <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword>. While incubating businesses like new energy and airports showed strong momentum, the firm suffered a loss of Rs 201.83 crore in commercial mining, while the pre-tax earnings from the road business plummeted 84 per cent to Rs 222.03 crore. Also, its unit Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) recognised a one-time exceptional expense of Rs 627 crore to make up for past payments. Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), a unit of the company that holds the new energy business -- including solar module and wind turbine manufacturing, saw a 6.2x growth in EBITDA to Rs 641 crore, while the same at airports business more than doubled to Rs 662 crore. The number of passengers at company-run airports rose 19 per cent to 88.6 million. Its revenue from operations was up at Rs 29,180.02 crore in the three months to March 31 from Rs 28,943.84 crore a year ago. For the full fiscal 2023-24 (FY24), net profit soared 31 per cent to Rs 3,240.78 crore. This is despite revenue from operations falling to Rs 96,420.98 crore from Rs 1,27,539.50 crore in 2022-23. Its consolidated EBITDA for FY24 increased by 32 per cent to Rs 13,237 crore that of incubating businesses grew by 47 per cent year-on-year. Its joint venture with EdgeConneX has one operational data centre in Chennai and construction in Noida and Hyderabad facilities is 81-88 per cent complete. It plans to build nine data centres with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt by 2030 to provide infrastructure for the booming digital services demand. That's the problem because their competitors can sell cars at a really low price level because they have the battery cost under control," Wisbert said.She warned that attempting to save money by scaling back EV plans would render German carmakers even less competitive in the future. Volkswagen and Mercedes have both adjusted their EV strategies and pushed back targets in recent months as sales stagnate."Right now they're cutting their plans for future investment — and that's not the best way to stay competitive in the future," said Wisbert.Investors are also sounding the alarm, sending Mercedes-Benz shares down more than 11% this year, with BMW sliding 28%. VW, meanwhile, is down about a fifth this year, and close to half the stock price of October 2019. Analysts at UBS have a "sell" recommendation on the stock, and the potential cost and disruption that could be sparked by a "major restructuring."VW, Mercedes, and BMW did not respond to requests for comment from BI.
