Banking jobs: HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and more are hiring across the country for various roles

IDFC First Bank on Sunday said it will make an equity investment of Rs 250 crore in beleaguered Yes Bank to acquire 25 crore equity shares. "...duly authorized committee of the Board of Directors of IDFC FIRST Bank Ltd had at its meeting held on March 14, 2020 accorded approval for an equity investment of upto Rs 250 crores comprising upto 25 crore equity shares at a price of Rs 10 each and face value of Rs 2 each, under the proposed Scheme of Reconstruction of Yes Bank Ltd under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, subject to regulatory and government approval(s), if any," the bank said in a BSE filing. Earlier on Saturday, Federal Bank had committed to investing Rs 300 crore in Yes Bank for subscription of its 30 crore shares. The Centre on Saturday notified the YES Bank Limited Reconstruction Scheme, 2020, a day after the Union Cabinet approved a reconstruction plan proposed by the RBI for bailing out fund-starved Yes Bank. The authorised capital of Yes Bank has been increased to Rs 6,200 crore, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. As per the reconstruction scheme, moratorium on the troubled lender will be lifted on March 18. Under the plan, state-run SBI will infuse Rs 7,250 crore in the crisis-ridden bank and take 49 per cent equity. As per the rescue plan, ICICI Bank will invest Rs 1,000 crore, mortgage lender HDFC Rs 1,000 crore, Axis Bank Rs 600 crore, Kotak Mahindra Bank Rs 500 crore, Bandhan Bank and Federal Bank Rs 300 crore each. There will be a three year lock-in period for all the investors. However, the lock-in period for SBI would be only for 26 per cent of shareholding. It would be 75 per cent in case of other investors. <ul><li>The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Meeting (MPC) is currently underway and it has some tough decisions to make.</li><li>It needs to decide between meeting its inflation-targeting mandate and making sure there’s still liquidity in the market. </li><li>The RBI also needs to figure out where another moratorium or a one-time restructuring of loans across all sectors will be better for businesses.</li></ul>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to announce its policy rate decision tomorrow, and this time around, the situation is more uncertain than usual. From meeting its inflation mandate to keeping money circulating in the economy to dealing with loans — RBI’s policy decision could set the tone for how the apex bank expects the next few months to go. The moratorium conundrum Many banks and industry experts are of the opinion that another moratorium on loan repayments is not required going forward. The RBI first announced a three-month moratorium from March to May then extended the limit to August 31 leading to a lot of uncertainty when it comes to a bank’s balance sheets. Private and public sector banks alike have been shoring up provisions to deal specifically with COVID related accounts, over and above the RBI’s mandate. <div type="image" title="Provisions in Q1" msid="77365771" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Provisions across major Indian banks in Q1&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar told the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/government-and-corporates-need-to-invest-more-for-recovery-sbi-chairman-rajnish-kumar/articleshow/77358404.cms">Economic Times</a> that the moratorium has achieved its limited purpose and can now be done away with. “What the RBI can do is if the bank is satisfied with the intent of the borrower and normalisation in cash flows, it can give some relief,” he said. The call for one-time restructuring Rather than delay payments further, Indian industry leaders are suggesting that a one-time restructuring of all loans should be put on the table. Certain segments were already struggling before the coronavirus pandemic hit and others are wondering how to crack the ‘new normal’. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="77328145" title="One-time loan restructuring dilemma - RBI won’t commit, and India Inc won’t stop asking for it" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The RBI’s issue with restructuring loans has always been that it amounts to ‘deceptive banks’ — in the words of the former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan. Businesses, on the other hand, don’t want to be declared NPA in order to be restructured since that blocks incremental funding. For any of this to happen, banks need to be incentivized to pump more money into loans on the verge of collapse. RBI’s inflation-targeting mandate Former RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/trends/current-affairs-trends/focus-on-inflation-over-growth-at-next-policy-review-meet-viral-acharya-to-rbi-5631091.html">believes</a> that the apex bank should ‘respect’ its core mandate and get inflation in India under control. But, it’s not a simple choice because of the relationship inflation shares with the repo rate. The RBI has slashed the repo rate twice in the last 4 months — once during the March MPC by 75 basis points (bps) and again in an off-cycle meeting in May by another 40 bps. 100 bps make up one percent and the repo rate is one of the instruments that the RBI has on hand to control inflation and spur growth. The rate currently stands at 4%. The repo rate and inflation share an inverse relationship. While dipping the repo rate further could make inflation worse, increasing it would make it more expensive for banks to borrow. The RBI is required to keep inflation in India between 2% to 6% as per its inflation targeting mechanism — or core mandate as Acharya put it. tolerance levels this quarter as well, it will technically constitute a failure of the monetary policy. Following which, RBI will be required to send a report to the central government explaining why the situation occurred and the remedial measures to fix it. Three things the RBI will have to mull over as it gets ready to announce its monetary policy decision

In a bid to attract more buyers this festive season, brick-and-mortar stores and online marketplaces are going to offer zero-cost EMIs. 
 
Yes, after three years, the banks, offline and online marketplaces have brought back the zero EMI option, but with some tweaks. 
 In a bid to adhere to <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s (RBI) regulations, the EMI option has got a bit of re-structuring. 
 
Now, the amount due as interest to banks will be offered as a discount to consumers and consumers won't have to pay processing fees, convenience fees or any other charges. 
 
This means, you can buy any item at zero EMI and the retailers, e-commerce sellers or the brands will shoulder the interest burden. 
 <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and the <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword> have already rolled out the zero-cost EMI scheme in association with State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword>, Citibank and <keyword id="6358584" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSBC">HSBC</keyword>. 
 
The move will not only push sales during the festive season, banks will also witness rise in retail loan growth. 
 
As per the RBI, loans expanded 7.7% in the April-July 22 period compared with 8.2% a year earlier, pulled down by a mere 0.6% growth in industry credit. 
 
"Consumers are not just buying more, but even premium products. Their shopping list ranges from consumer electronics to furniture, fashion to even food and grocery. We will extend it to other group formats,” Vinay Bhatia, Future Group's CEO - group loyalty and analytics, told ET. 
 
Flipkart is rolling out the offer for transactions valued at more than Rs 4,000, with payments to be made over six, nine or 12 months.

<keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> share a similar profile in terms of corporate exposure and funding roads, power companies, etc, still there could be a divide emerging between the two. 
 
The stock performance of the two banks clearly point out the divide as the latest quarter financial performance indicate investors believe that Axis Bank is better place than ICICI. 
 The past year saw Axis outperform ICICI by a huge margin. Axis rose 68.71% in the past year when compared with ICICI, which gained 12.23%. The broader BSE <keyword id="54657" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bankex">Bankex</keyword> rose 21%. 
 
ICICI Bank's March quarter earnings rose 10.2% to Rs 2,922 crore, while Axis reported an 18.36% advance to Rs 2,180.6 crore. 
"Axis' earnings growth for the past few quarters has been at 18% while that of ICICI Bank has been at around 10%. Its growth is almost double, which is driving investors to the stock," Vaibhav Agrawal, Vice President research - banking at Angel Broking told Economic Times, adding "Axis Bank's asset quality has been steady while ICICI Bank has seen a rise in its net nonperforming loans. This has also been a positive for Axis Bank." 
 
Meanwhile, Anish Tawakley, analyst with Barclays, said for ICICI Bank, the slippages from the restructuring book are very high as loan exposures come out of the moratorium. 
 
"In large corporates, there can be some lumpy accounts. Even if the economy picks up, they can see stress as they are highly leveraged,” he told ET. 
Even though Axis and ICICI apparently emerged from their past issues - partly created by the economic slowdown that saw bad loans of the industry's largest bank rise to 1.40% of total assets - investors seem to choose former over latter. 
 
"As far as the impact of NPA additions is concerned, as the bank has previously explained, the higher slippages to NPA have come mainly from the existing restructured portfolio; hence the impact on NII and margins is not significant," an ICICI Bank spokesman told the financial daily. 
 Both ICICI and Axis are run by chips of the same block - <keyword id="45875" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chanda-Kochhar">Chanda Kochhar</keyword> and <keyword id="6356453" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shikha-Sharma">Shikha Sharma</keyword> - who rose up the ranks at ICICI under KV Kamath. 
 
The newspaper reported that Sharma, who spent almost three decades at the ICICI Bank Group before moving to head Axis Bank in 2009, showed some aggressive management style by buying Enam Securities for Rs 2,070 crore, while Kochhar spent steadying the ship by pulling back funds from overseas businesses. 
 
"Asset quality continues to be challenging due to the tough operating environment and the economic recovery being slower and volatile," Kochhar said during the post-earnings call. In the past few years, she said. 
 
Kochchar added that restructuring was done keeping in mind assumptions of a possible turnaround in the economy. "But the pick-up in economic activity has been gradual and volatile affecting these companies. Asset quality in 2016 will be better than last year," said Kochhar. 
 
"The asset quality environment continues to be challenging with economic activity being weak," V Srinivasan, executive director at Axis Bank, told ET, adding, “We will have to monitor our exposure."
