McGowan said.The end result is that the people who need these drugs most are taking uncharted, unresearched risks to get the medications.<h2 id="98c0484b-95b1-476a-be13-71c0822e754e">Patients are rationing doses to cut costs</h2>GLP-1 medications work by mimicking a hormone in the body that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weight-loss-glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-mounjaro-effects-future-2023-12">latest generation of these class of drugs</a>, medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, are once-weekly injections.The caveat is that in order to maintain the weight loss, you need to keep taking the drugs, but McGowan said that's just not possible at the current price point."This is why we so often see patients cycling on and off medications. Unfortunately, short-term use doesn't translate into long-term benefit," he said.In some cases, patients say they've tried to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-really-like-find-affordable-weight-loss-drugs-patient-2024-9">space out their doses</a>, and found their weight creeping back up.<h2 id="ffe4633a-0741-4479-9135-9ecd9bb4e9ff">Copycat drugs are dominating the online market</h2>A booming industry of websites and telehealth companies have jumped at the chance to sell patients their weight loss drugs for cheap, but there's a major catch, according to McGowan.These providers are offering <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buy-compounded-semaglutide-online-risks-wegovy-ozempic-2023-1">compounded semaglutide</a> and tirzepatide, which contains the same active ingredient as branded products, but isn't FDA-approved."The compounded GLP-1 market has absolutely exploded," he said. "These drugs are everywhere and can be obtained with incredible ease and at a fraction of the cost of brand-name medication. However, this entirely unregulated industry presents significant risks related to quality, safety, and efficacy."<h2 id="538abdcc-03f9-459d-8b0f-54139cf4de87">It could take years for prices to drop</h2>Political pressure on pharmaceutical companies may move the needle when it comes to drug prices, according to Ted Kyle, a health professional with decades of experience in policy, marketing, and obesity care."It's going to be really messy but five years from now, prices will more reasonable, access much better, and more people will be getting care with a whole lot less blame and shame," Kyle told Business Insider.The competitive pressure will also help drive prices lower as companies aim to attract consumers back to their brand with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eli-lilly-cut-price-zepbound-tirzepatide-weight-loss-drug-copycats-2024-8">cheaper options for weight-loss drugs</a>.But McGowan said he isn't optimistic that the situation will improve for his patients in the near future."We can beg insurers to cover medication and plead with pharmaceutical companies to lower prices, but there simply isn't any incentive for them to do so right now," McGowan said.

My husband Jariel and I were young when we had him, and we wanted to get established and do things right the second time. So, we bought a house and grew up a bit. I had a pain on the left side of my chest that wrapped around my back. My grandmother, who was with us and works in a hospital, realized my heart had stopped. At the new hospital, they said it was massive. Soon after that, I coded again, and doctors <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teen-life-support-mom-legal-fight-doctors-brain-dead-2022-9">hooked me up to life support</a> that took over for my heart and lungs.By that point, doctors realized I had a heart attack caused by a spontaneous coronary artery dissection. This happens when an artery bursts, and it's most common in pregnant and postpartum women.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.059635"> Research</a> shows it's an understudied cause of maternal deaths.Looking back, I am so proud of how I advocated for myself before the heart attack. If I had gone home when the doctors wanted to discharge me, I might not be here. Instead, I insisted on staying in the hospital. Because of that, doctors were able to give me CPR and later an<a target="_blank" href="https://www.abiomed.com/patients-and-caregivers/about-impella"> Impella heart pump</a> that saved my life.<h2 id="e7335df2-e712-486a-825b-b4d5f19fec65">I'm still recovering and I'm happy to be alive</h2>After about three days, I came off life support. I was still in the critical care unit, so I wasn't able to see my baby. I missed her so much, but I knew she was in good hands. My husband and both of our mothers are so supportive. I never had to wonder if the baby was OK without me. I could just concentrate on getting better so I could get back to her.Ten days later, I was finally discharged and able to see Jaicei. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/c-section-things-i-wished-i-knew-before-birth-2021-11">Having a C-section</a> followed by a heart attack is no joke. I still can't drive myself places, and I am doing cardiac rehabilitation a few times a week, but overall, I'm doing really well. I'm so grateful that I trusted myself to know when something was wrong. Ultimately, that's what let me be here with my baby.

The Dhaka Tribune report cited a man who brought the journalist to the hospital as saying, "I saw the woman floating in Hatirjheel Lake. Although his approach hasn't been proven in clinical trials, he believes it will keep vitamin levels in the blood as stable as possible, as most of a water-soluble multivitamin is peed out.Roizen said evidence suggests multivitamins could lower the risk of dementia and cancer. Indeed, a 2022 <a target="_blank" href="https://alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/alz.12767">study</a> by researchers at Columbia University and Brigham and Women's Hospital found that taking a multivitamin daily for three years appeared to improve older adults' cognition and memory, although it was unclear why.In participants with cardiovascular disease, a risk factor for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/detecting-and-preventing-cognitive-decline-with-ai-2023-11">cognitive decline</a>, the authors said the micronutrients may have treated deficiencies linked to the condition.However, the jury is still out on multivitamins. Taking aspirin regularly long-term carries risks because it can thin the blood so that the body can't form clots when bleeding.But Roizen believes it is safe for him to take as "someone over the age of 50 with a low risk of bleeding."However, the US Preventive Services Task Force <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/recommendation/aspirin-to-prevent-cardiovascular-disease-preventive-medication#fullrecommendationstart">does not recommend</a> adults over 60 take preventive aspirin.<h2 id="42c3882b-4221-4d9e-92e6-769f703f605c">CoQ10</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/coq10-benefits">CoQ10</a> is a substance found in cells that helps convert food into energy. As an antioxidant, it has been linked to a reduction in the effects of aging on the skin and on a cellular level in humans and rodents. It's also thought to prevent problems associated with free radicals, which are DNA-damaging particles that move around the body.Roizen said he takes the supplement alongside statins to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/treatments/high-cholesterol">reduce his cholesterol levels</a>, because statins decrease CoQ10 levels in the body.However, a small 2022 study involving 37 participants published in Antioxidants found that the supplement didn't the amount of CoQ10 in their muscles, where pain can occur in people who take statins.And, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there isn't strong evidence that CoQ10 improves <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/high-blood-pressure">blood pressure</a> and heart failure despite some claims.<h2 id="f341eece-a3d3-4325-bbeb-0de5dbc4176c">ASU</h2>ASU stands for avocado-soybean unsaponifiables, which are vegetable extracts leftover from soap-making.Roizen takes it to decrease the pain of osteoarthritis. There some evidence to suggest that ASU could treat osteoarthritis because of its anti-inflammatory properties. However, researchers say more long-term studies in humans are needed.<h2 id="ce728601-ade0-432a-85bc-b6e6c37404b0">Ergothioneine</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-foods-to-increase-life-span-like-a-tech-billionaire-2023-4">Ergothioneine</a> is present in most foods, but mushrooms are particularly rich in it. Roizen doesn't take an ergothioneine supplement but regards the substance as a supplement to his diet.Instead of taking a pill, he gets it from mushrooms. Five days a week, he has an "MLT" — a mushroom, lettuce, and tomato sandwich — for lunch.Eating plenty of ergothioneine as part of a healthy diet was linked to a lower risk of coronary artery disease in a 2020 study by researchers from Lund University, Sweden.Meanwhile, studies on cells suggest that ergothioneine can help prevent DNA damage from UV exposure, according to a 2022 review of studies published in the journal Antioxidants &amp; Redox Signaling.

An airline spokesperson told Business Insider that it was "met by the paramedics upon landing due to a pilot feeling unwell.""The captain landed the flight routinely in line with procedures and passengers disembarked normally," they added. "At no point was the safety of the flight compromised."But the incident raises an important question: What happens if a pilot becomes unwell and can no longer fly?Retired US pilots Kent Davis and Mark Stephens said it's not something they ever stressed over.<h2 id="38d7f4d6-6a5e-4013-905b-f72d92347143">Medical emergencies are planned for</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-flight-tampa-diverted-fort-lauderdale-flew-dangerously-low-faa-2024-7">Kent Davis</a> spent over 30 years as a pilot for commercial airlines and private clients.He now operates his own aviation consulting company in the US, Trans Global Aviation Solutions.Speaking to BI via email, Davis said it is "not a big deal" when pilots become unwell as they are trained to prepare for this. <div type="image" title="aircraft interior" height="683" width="1024" msid="112170936" hostid="261" sizebytes="70636"></div>"It really is something that is made more of by the press than it really is. I had this happen years ago and I landed quickly as the first officer was very ill," he said.Davis said he was flying from Montreal to Toronto when the first officer began passing a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/what-causes-kidney-stones">kidney stone</a>. He said he made an emergency landing in Ottawa, while the flight attendants on board cared for the pilot."I declared an emergency primarily to get expedited arrival into Ottawa because my first officer was in so much pain, I thought he was dying," Davis said. "An ambulance met us on arrival."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-pilot-thirty-years-career-salary-pay-captain-airlines-2023-12">Retired Delta pilot Mark Stephens worked in the industry for 30 years</a> and was an Airbus A350 captain until 2021.Stephens told BI that domestic flights usually have at least two pilots, while international flights can have two pilots and two captains."Pilots know what they are doing, and they do it repeatedly," he said.The first thing the remaining pilot or pilots would do is find another crew member to handle the radio work while they focus on landing or diverting the plane.In the US, for example, pilots must sign a release confirming they are fit for duty before each flight. Stephens said pilots shouldn't sign this even if they have a non-life-threatening illness.He recalled one instance several years ago where he refrained from flying for around a month because he had the flu.<h2 id="16fe7333-3f76-49e2-ad78-2bdc52963f8f">Life-threatening illnesses</h2>However, Stephens said the situation would be handled slightly differently if a crew member encountered a life-threatening emergency in midair."It is a dire situation if the captain has a heart attack, or is not breathing. But there are procedures in place," he said.Flight attendants in the US are trained in CPR and have defibrillators, Stephens said. He eats them pretty much every day.For breakfast, Antoun has nuts and a cup of coffee with a splash of oat or almond milk. He either has L-Nutra's Prolon Fasting bar, which is made of walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and a little bit of honey, or just whole nuts.Occasionally he has his company's Longevity Spread, which is made of mainly almonds and cocoa powder, on wholewheat bread.Research suggests that eating nuts regularly could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-young-people-can-lower-their-risk-for-heart-disease-2023-2">lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.</a> A large 2017 study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked at data on more than 200,000 people across 32 years and found that those who ate nuts five or more times a week had a 14% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 20% lower risk of coronary heart disease than people who never or almost never did. Nuts have been found to lower the risk of high blood pressure, reduce "bad" cholesterol, and decrease the risk of blood clots that can lead to heart attack or stroke, according to The Mayo Clinic.<h2 id="3571c193-1e4b-4988-bea3-c668482b113b">Eat plant-based protein</h2>Antoun mainly eats plant-based protein including nuts, beans, and chickpeas.There's compelling evidence to suggest that a diet high in plants could boost longevity. In a 2023 study published in JAMA Network Open, 22 pairs of twins were randomly assigned either <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vegan-diet-better-for-health-than-omnivore-identical-twins-study-2023-12">a healthy vegan diet or a healthy omnivorous diet</a> for eight weeks.At the end of the study, the vegan twins had significantly lower "bad" cholesterol levels, as well as insulin and body weight — all of which are associated with improved cardiovascular health — than their omnivorous counterparts.Another large study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that shifting 3% of calorie intake from animal protein to plant protein appeared to lower the risk of death from any cause by 10%.<h2 id="64ce9d27-3ddd-4a36-8b5e-874da2b7341e">Have dinner early and breakfast late</h2>Another part of Longo's Longevity Diet, and the central tenant of L-Nutra's business model, is intermittent fasting. "I don't eat overnight. It's very important for me to have my dinner around seven and then stay all the way the next day until seven, eight o'clock up until I have my breakfast," he said.Fasting diets are popular with CEOs, celebrities, and biohacking bros, who hope it will help with weight loss, longevity, and improved focus.
