Artemis IV, the first mission to the Gateway lunar space station, remains on track for 2028. The first mission, Artemis II, was supposed to take place later this year. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement that they have learned a lot since Artemis I, and the success of these early missions relies on "our commercial and international partnerships to further our reach and understanding of humanity's place in our solar system". "Artemis represents what we can accomplish as a nation - and as a global coalition. When we set our sights on what is hard, together, we can achieve what is great," he added. The space agency said that ensuring crew safety is the primary driver for the Artemis II schedule changes. "As the first Artemis flight test with crew aboard the Orion spacecraft, the mission will test critical environmental control and life support systems required to support astronauts," said NASA. NASA's investigation into unexpected loss of char layer pieces from the spacecraft's heat shield during Artemis I is expected to conclude this spring. The new timeline for Artemis III, said NASA, aligns with the updated schedule for Artemis II, which ensures the agency can incorporate lessons learned from Artemis II into the next mission, and acknowledges development challenges experienced by NASA's industry partners. "We are letting the hardware talk to us so that crew safety drives our decision-making. We will use the Artemis II flight test, and each flight that follows, to reduce risk for future Moon missions," said Catherine Koerner, associate administrator, Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. NASA said that it has asked both Artemis human landing system providers -- SpaceX and Blue Origin -- to begin applying knowledge gained in developing their systems as part of their existing contracts toward future variations to potentially deliver large cargo on later missions. "Artemis is a long-term exploration campaign to conduct science at the Moon with astronauts and prepare for future human missions to Mars. That means we must get it right as we develop and fly our foundational systems so that we can safely carry out these missions," said Amit Kshatriya, manager of NASA's Moon to Mars Program Office.

NASA delays mission to take humans back to Moon until 2025

NASA pushes back Artemis I Moon mission launch to November

<ul><li>Earlier, during the launch rocket engines were showing high temperatures and were not able to cool down.</li><li>The team also saw a hydrogen leak during the launch.</li><li>The rocket will travel about 1.3 million miles over the course of 42 days.</li></ul>The US space agency will now target September 3 as the new launch date for the Artemis I <keyword id="42440" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="moon" source="Orion">Moon</keyword> mission that was scrubbed last Monday owing to a technical glitch with one of the <keyword id="1347202" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="space-launch-system" source="Orion">Space Launch System</keyword> (SLS) rocket's engines. <keyword id="6360409" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword> Mission managers met to discuss data and develop a forward plan to address issues that arose during the launch attempt for the flight test. "During that launch attempt, teams were not able to chill down the four RS-25 engines to approximately minus 420 degrees Fahrenheit, with engine 3 showing higher temperatures than the other engines," the space agency said in a statement late on Tuesday. Teams also saw a hydrogen leak on a component of the tail service mast umbilical quick disconnect, called the purge can, and managed the leak by manually adjusting propellant flow rates. "In the coming days, teams will modify and practice propellant loading procedures to follow a procedure similar to what was successfully performed during the Green Run at NASA's <keyword id="3001550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stennis-space-center" source="Orion">Stennis Space Center</keyword> in Mississippi," said NASA. The updated procedures would perform the chill-down test of the engines, also called the kick start bleed test, about 30 to 45 minutes earlier in the countdown during the liquid hydrogen fast fill liquid phase for the core stage. Teams also are configuring platforms at <keyword id="453776" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="launch-pad" source="Orion">Launch Pad</keyword> 39B to enable engineers access to the purge can on the tail service mast umbilical. Once access is established, technicians will perform assessments and torque connection points where necessary, said NASA. NASA to re-attempt the launch of the Artemis 1 moon mission on September 3

Indian-origin software and robotics engineer, <keyword id="1075965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Kshatriya" source="Orion">Amit Kshatriya</keyword> has been appointed as first head of <keyword id="6360409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword>'s new Moon to Mars Programme Office at the agency's headquarters in Washington. The new office aims to carry out <keyword id="16996779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASAs-human-exploration-activities" source="Orion">NASA's human exploration activities</keyword> at the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity. "The Moon to Mars Programme Office will help prepare NASA to carry out our bold missions to the Moon and land the first humans on Mars," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, in a statement. "The golden age of exploration is happening right now, and this new office will help ensure that NASA successfully establishes a long-term lunar presence needed to prepare for humanity's next giant leap to the Red Planet." As directed by the 2022 NASA Authorization Act, the Moon to Mars Programme Office focuses on hardware development, mission integration, and risk management functions for programmes critical to the agency's exploration approach that uses Artemis missions at the Moon to open a new era of scientific discovery and prepare for human missions to Mars. This includes the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, supporting ground systems, human landing systems, spacesuits, Gateway, and more related to deep space exploration. The new office will also lead planning and analysis for long-lead developments to support human Mars missions. The office resides within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD), and Kshatriya, appointed as deputy associate administrator, will report to its Associate Administrator Jim Free. Kshatriya previously served as acting deputy associate administrator for Common Exploration Systems Development, providing leadership and integration across several of the programmes that now fall within the new office. In the new role, Kshatriya is responsible for programme planning and implementation for human missions to the Moon and Mars.A He will direct and lead the programmes to ensure Artemis and Mars planning, development, and operations are consistent with ESDMD requirements, and will serve as the single point of focus for risk management. Kshatriya began his career in the space programme in 2003, working as a software engineer, robotics engineer, and spacecraft operator primarily focused on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a space station flight director, where he led global teams in the operations and execution of the space station during all phases of flight. From 2017 to 2021, he became deputy, and then acting manager, of the ISS Vehicle Office, where he was responsible for sustaining engineering, logistics, and hardware programme management. In 2021, he was assigned to NASA Headquarters in the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate as an assistant deputy associate administrator, where he was an integral part of the team that returned a spacecraft designed to carry humans to the Moon during the Artemis I mission. Son of first-generation Indian immigrants to the US, Kshatriya holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin. He has also been decorated with the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for actions as the lead flight director for the 50th expedition to the space station, as well as the Silver Snoopy -- an award that astronauts bestow for outstanding performance contributing to flight safety -- for his actions as lead robotics officer for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Dragon demonstration mission to the orbiting laboratory. Indian-origin robotics engineer to head NASA's new Moon to Mars office

It was earlier scheduled for launch in February. In a statement on Wednesday, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/skywatching-tips-for-february-2022-last-chance-to-see-jupiter-venus-at-its-brightest-and-more/articleshow/89293232.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">NASA</a> announced that the 'Space Launch System' rocket and Orion spacecraft will not be rolled out to Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for testing "no earlier than March 2022". "While the teams are not working on any major issues, NASA has added additional time to complete closeout activities inside the Vehicle Assembly building prior to rolling the integrated rocket and spacecraft out for the first time," the US space agency said. The space agency has not yet announced a new date for rollout. "Right now, we're kind of looking at mid-March," Space.com quoted Tom Whitmeyer, the Deputy associate administrator for exploration systems development at NASA headquarters in Washington D.C, as saying during a press conference. "We'll get a little bit closer to the final close-out and then we'll be in a better position to target a specific date." Once the rollout to the pad is successfully completed, the next step toward launch will be a wet dress rehearsal. "The engineers will continue work associated with final closeout tasks and flight termination system testing ahead of the wet dress rehearsal," NASA said. The space agency added that it is also reviewing launch opportunities in April and May. 'Artemis 1' will be the first of NASA's Artemis missions, which the agency plans will eventually land humans back on the moon as part of a long-term goal for a sustainable lunar presence. This will be the first time that NASA or anyone else will send humans to the moon's surface since the agency's last Apollo mission in 1972. This first mission will be uncrewed and will see the Orion spacecraft go far past the moon before returning to Earth and testing the technology that will one day soon carry humans.

Stephen Whiting warned about a growing threat.China, he said, is "moving at breathtaking speed in space," and is developing a range of weapons that threaten America's space supremacy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stripes.com/branches/space_force/2024-04-25/space-force-china-japan-korea-13651897.html">reported Stars and Stripes.</a>"They're also using space to make their terrestrial forces — their army, their navy, their marine corps, their air force — more precise, more lethal, and more far-ranging," he added. It's one of a series of warnings from top US military officials in recent months about the growing threat in space posed by China.There is a very real risk, they say, that the US could soon lose its status as the world's dominant space power."We are at a pivotal moment in history," Troy Meink, principal deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office, which builds and operates the US fleet of spy satellites, said at a recent event in Colorado, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.space.com/china-space-progress-breathtaking-speed-space-force">as quoted by Space.com.</a>"For the first time in decades, US leadership in space and space technology is being challenged," Meink added. But China has its own moon landing program, and US lawmakers at a congressional hearing in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/01/17/artemis-china-delay-competition/"> January warned that</a> delays to NASA's plans to get astronauts to the lunar surface by 2022 mean that China could get there first."The country that lands first will have the ability to set a precedent for whether future lunar activities are conducted with openness and transparency or in a more restricted manner," said Rep. Frank Lucas, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.Brig. Gen. Whoever wins will not just have control over the moon, but will likely be the top power on Earth. In 2019, for example, scientists estimated the moon had contracted by about 150 feet over the last several hundred million years.The moon's interior is cooling, and its brittle crust is cracking, creating "thrust faults" where one piece slides over another, which can trigger <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/indias-moon-lander-detects-signs-of-possible-moonquake-2023-9">moonquakes</a>.That was all common knowledge in the scientific community at least five years ago.However, a new study published in the peer-reviewed <a target="_blank" href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/PSJ/ad1332">Planetary Science Journal</a> shows some of these faults are near potential landing sites for NASA's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-launching-artemis-mega-rocket-orion-spaceship-around-the-moon-2022-8">Artemis III</a> mission and could be an issue for long-term lunar settlements.<h2>Danger at the lunar south pole</h2>Artemis III plans to land astronauts near the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moon-missions-why-astronauts-have-not-returned-2018-7">moon's south pole</a>, which contains water ice, among other vital resources. The test will be the culmination of months of assembly and testing for <keyword id="13523120" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sls-and-orion" source="Orion">SLS and Orion</keyword>, as well as preparations by launch control and engineering teams, and set the stage for the first Artemis launch. At the end of the test, the team will drain the propellant to demonstrate the procedures that would be used during a launch scrub. After draining the tanks, the team will review the test data before setting an official target launch date. Artemis 1 is currently scheduled to launch no earlier than late May 2022. The uncrewed Artemis I mission is the first flight of the <keyword id="385928" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sls" source="Orion">SLS</keyword> rocket and <keyword id="177115" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="orion" source="Orion">Orion</keyword> spacecraft together.
