The government on Thursday said it has blocked more than 60 social media accounts, including <keyword id="10879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youtube" source="Orion">YouTube</keyword> channels and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/meta-chime-file-joint-complaint-against-phishing-attacks-on-facebook-and-instagram/articleshow/89445529.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Facebook and Instagram</a> pages, in the last two months for spreading anti-India fake news. Replying to supplementary questions in the Upper House, Minister for State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said the government is very much concerned about the freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Asked about action taken against those spreading fake news, and publishers of anti-national material, he said more than 60 accounts have been blocked including those on YouTube, Twitter, <keyword id="6354576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="819905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="instagram" source="Orion">Instagram</keyword>. "These YouTube channels are sponsored from Pakistan," he said. On fake news through newspapers, the minister said the Press Council of India is an autonomous statutory body and takes care of the journalists ethics code. "Journalists have to follow ethics code. Wherever they have not followed the ethics code under the Press Council Act Section 14, action has to be initiated. In more than 150 cases, we took action against them," he said. Asked about Techfog app roles in spreading fake news, Murugan said the government has established a fact check unit, which has responded to more than 30,000 queries. This unit is also verifying viral fake news, he added. According to an official statement, the ministry on January 21 had ordered blocking of 35 YouTube based news channels and two websites which were involved in spreading anti-India fake news in a coordinated manner over digital media. Additionally, two Twitter accounts, two Instagram accounts, and one Facebook account were blocked. In December also, 20 YouTube channels and two websites were blocked, the official statement had said. In a written reply to the starred question, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said the government has statutory and institutional mechanisms in place to combat fake news. A "Fact Check Unit" has been setup under the Press Information Bureau of this Ministry in November, 2019 which takes cognisance of fake news both suo motu and by way of queries sent by citizens on its portal or through e-mail and WhatsApp. "The unit responds to relevant queries with correct information when the same pertains to Central Government or forwards them to States/UTs in other cases. The Unit also maintains a Twitter account @PIBFactcheck and posts cases of fake news, being busted, on the same on regular basis. PIB Fact Check Unit has so far responded to 30,533 actionable queries," he said. For print media, the Press Council of India (PCI), a statutory autonomous body set up under the Press Council Act, 1978, has framed "Norms of Journalistic Conduct" for adherence by the media. These norms emphasise the principles of accuracy and fairness as well as pre-publication verification. The PCI has formulated specific norms to refrain print media from publication/ dissemination of fake or false news. For electronic media (Television), all TV channels are required to adhere to the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. As per the code, programmes should not contain anything obscene defamatory, deliberate, false and suggestive innuendos and half-truths. For digital news, the government has notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 on February 25 2021, under the Information Technology Act, 2000 which inter alia provides for a Code of Ethics for adherence by digital news publishers. "Appropriate action is taken in cases where violation of norms, codes etc., are found. The government also issues advisory from time to time to the media to adhere to the laid down codes," Thakur said.

Government blocks over 60 social media accounts for allegedly spreading anti-India fake news

The Information and Broadcasting ministry has ordered blocking of 20 channels on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/youtube-tv-regains-access-to-espn-fx-and-more-disney-channels/articleshow/88384438.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">YouTube</a> and two websites over spreading "anti-India" propaganda and fake news on the internet. "In a closely coordinated effort between intelligence agencies and the Information and Broadcasting ministry, the ministry has ordered the blocking of 20 channels on YouTube and two websites spreading anti-India propaganda and fake news on the internet," the ministry said in a statement on Monday. The channels and websites belong to a coordinated disinformation network operating from Pakistan and spreading fake news about various sensitive subjects related to India. The channels were used to post divisive content in a coordinated manner on topics like Kashmir, Indian Army, minority communities in India, Ram Mandir, General Bipin Rawat etc, it added. Two separate orders - one for 20 <keyword id="1667970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youtube-channels" source="Orion">YouTube channels</keyword> directing YouTube, and the other for two news websites, requesting the Department of Telecom to direct the internet service providers for blocking of the news channels and portals. The Ministry has acted to secure the information space in India, and utilised emergency powers under the Rule 16 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The modus operandi of the anti-India disinformation campaign involved the Naya Pakistan Group (NPG), operating from Pakistan, having a network of YouTube channels, and some other standalone YouTube channels not related to NPG. The channels had a combined subscriber base of over 35 lakh, and their videos had over 55 crore views. Some of the YouTube channels of the Naya Pakistan Group (NPG) were being operated by anchors of Pakistani news channels. "These YouTube channels had also posted content on issues such as the farmers' protest, protests related to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and tried to incite the minorities against the Government of India. It was also feared that these YouTube channels would be used to post content to undermine the democratic process of the upcoming elections in five states," the ministry said. The Ministry observed that most of the content pertains to subjects sensitive from the perspective of national security and are factually incorrect, and are being mainly posted from Pakistan as a coordinated disinformation network (as in the case of Naya Pakistan Group) against India and thus deemed it fit for action under the provisions to block content in case of emergency.

<a href="http://qz.com/319866/a-threat-from-isis-prompts-india-to-block-github-and-a-handful-of-other-sites/">Quartz is reporting that popular websites including</a> Vimeo, Pastebin, GitHub, Dailymotion, Weebly, and archive.org have all been blocked in India.
It's believed that the Indian government ordered the websites to be blocked after threats against the country purported to be posted by ISIS were found on them.&#xa0;

Indian politician Arvind Gupta seemed to confirm the website blocks on Twitter, explaining that access to the sites had been cut off due to a warning from the Anti Terrorism Squad.

 The conversation happened in response to the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special status of Kashmir — bifurcating it into two union territories of Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Trump also spoke with Modi to discuss US-India strategic partnership, the White House said. According to IANS, Modi countered the anti-Indian venom coming from Pakistani leaders, saying that, "extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace." Hindu supremacy Khan had earlier alleged that Modi was turning India into a Hindu supremacist country. “Pakistan strongly condemns and rejects the announcements made today by the Indian Government regarding the Indian Occupied Jammu &amp; Kashmir. Donald Trump spoke to Narendra Modi and Imran Khan on the phone

Numerous incidents have deterred peace talks between India and Pakistan. New Delhi has maintained that Islamabad has to bring people behind terror attacks on India soil to books to have a cordial relationship. 
 
Talking about India’s stand on Pakistan, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the government wants cordial relations with all its neighbours. 
 
But, Parrikar said Pakistan needs to do much more to build confidence. 
 
“Every time there is some forward movement, we have a setback in the form of a terror attack. I think the atmosphere needs to be enhanced. In principle, I want very good relations with Pakistan,” said Parrikar. 
 
“There are a few steps they (Pakistan) have taken…I hope they continue with the steps,” the defence minister said. 
 
The foreign secretary-level talks between the two countries, which were slated to be held in Islamabad earlier this year, were suspended after terrorist attacks on the Pathankot air base on January 1 by Pakistan-based militants. The 40-hour attack on the Indian air base left seven security personnel dead. 
 
“While India is going out of its way to build a conducive atmosphere for talks, incidents such as Pathankot make it very difficult for the government to carry on the engagement with Pakistan,” said an analyst. 
 
Meanwhile, Parrikar said he was not a born anti-Pakistani and wanted situations to improve between the two nations. 
 
“(Pakistan PM) Sharif said that they want to stop terrorism from their land. I am not a born anti-Pakistan. Like we are building confidence bridges with the Chinese, slightly higher level may result into, we buy so many things from Pakistan, this may also result into a better (relations)…,” he said. 
 
He pointed out at the extraordinary gesture by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who made a surprise visit to Lahore to wish his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his birthday on December 25 last year. 
 
Meanwhile, on not inviting Pakistan for the DefExpo in Goa, Parrikar said, “I don’t see a big issue in inviting or not inviting. There is no calibrated decision specifically taken in this regard.”

The app was an alternative for TikTok.</li></ul>The ‘Remove China Apps’ which offered users an option to identify and remove Chinese-origin apps has been removed from the Google Play store. This comes after Google removed the Mitron app, a TikTok alternative. According to a report by TechCrunch, Google pulled the ‘Remove China Apps’ app from the Play store for violating the “Deceptive Behaviour policy”. According to reports, the Mitron app was built by using source code available on CodeCanyon for $34. The source code was reportedly bought from a Pakistani developer Irfan Sheikh.
