Jungle Cry was about a bunch of boys who participated in a rugby championship. Typically we have seen that action, thriller genres slightly outperformed the other genres. Their engagement levels are higher. When it comes to gender diversity in shows and movies, what has been Lionsgate's approach in India? We are the torchbearers for gender diversity. Our lineup of shows have female protagonists. Even when we launched our first edition in India, we had female leads in Hiccups and Hookups. We are consistently working around two accounts- gender diversity and inclusion. Lionsgate has also gone and represented African-American, Hispanic and Latin American communities on a global stage. The industry itself is changing as it is moving away from a male-centric view. It is now talent as opposed to gender. How is Lionsgate Play investing in regional cinema and content? We are trying to represent India as a whole but as of now we are slightly more focused on Hindi along with our Hollywood content. As we evolve in southeast Asia, we are going to look at regional Indian content. As of now, that is not a priority. Jungle Cry is a great example of how it does not need to be a local dialect but a local story also works wonders. We are currently releasing 65 plus titles in a year. Globally, our budget is around $2 billion. Which movies are creating the most amount of buzz? Feels Like Home is coming up with its second season. We are premiering Serpent Queen, Jerusalem, Unscripted Graham Norton and we just did Emmys. We want to present the type of content that customers have something to look forward to every Friday. How many minutes does an average user spend using Lionsgate Play? Our completion rate for series and movies is very high. Feels like Home alone had a 50% completion rate, which is significant. If we quantify our series, at least two to five episodes are being consumed. An average time spent per user on Lionsgate India is at least 80 minutes, sometimes going upwards (to) 100 minutes. How has the partnership with prime channels helped Lionsgate in India? We are also one of the largest partners globally when it comes to partnership with prime channels. In India, we have had a fantastic partnership with our launch of prime channels in the past 12 months. The subscribers in India on Lionsgate are paying annual subscriptions directly as opposed to monthly subscriptions. Apart from Hindi, what language shows are Indians interested in? What OTT has done is reduced the language barrier considerably and made the audience slightly language agnostic. Earlier, the only way you could watch a dubbed movie was in a theatre or on television but it did not create any considerable monetary opportunity and OTT has tapped into that market – whether it is Korean content popular in India, or Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu content being watched in Hindi speaking markets. We did a great experiment with a dubbed Arabic movie called The Ambush and because of great content, it performed excellently in India. Can OTTs hold their own space with theatre releases by Bollywood? Brahmāstra was recently released in theatres and even though it will be released on OTT soon, I went to watch it in a theatre. The experience in a theatre is different. That experience cannot be replicated on a small screen. What OTT does is it lets you watch at the time and place of your choosing. Each has a different need they are serving. Lionsgate also looks forward to onboarding upcoming Bollywood movies. E-commerce firms Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Snapdeal together sold goods worth $3.1 billion in the first 4.5 days of the first festival season sale, revealed management consultancy Redseer. This growth trajectory of e-commerce platforms in India testifies how customers are increasingly recognising the importance of comfort shopping within closed doors, and after seeing their businesses take a plunge in the first three months of the lockdown, more and more sellers are coming online with the increasing adoption of e-commerce platforms. Similarly, Amazon India has also been seeing a year of firsts in its ongoing Great Indian Festival and is breaking last year’s records already. So far, the platform has recorded the highest number of first time shoppers, saw a 50% increase in new sellers and witnessed the strongest-ever start for SMBs. 91% of its first-time shoppers were from smaller cities who browsed the app in local Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Amazon's ongoing Great Indian Festival has already broken last year's records

<ul><li>he <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> of India has ordered a stay against all pending cases concerning <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, <keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword> and others in High Courts across India.</li><li>This order comes in response to a plea filed by the Justice for Rights Foundation, which is seeking effective regulation to curb content on these over-the-top (OTT) platforms.</li><li>According to plea, neither the self regulation code or the Indian government’s new IT Rules are effective tools to curb content that hurts the religious, social and regional sentiments of the public at large. </li></ul>India’s apex court has ordered a stay against all cases concerning over-the-top (OTT) platforms — like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar and others — in multiple High Court across India. The development comes in response to a plea filed by the non-government organisation (NGO) Justice for Rights Foundation seeking regulation on the functioning of these video streaming apps by the government, according to <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/top-stories/ott-platforms-supreme-court-netflix-amazon-prime-regulated-by-statutory-body-171562">LiveLaw</a>. The NGO isn’t just going after Indian web series, but also international shows like Game of Thrones and Spartacus, accusing them of containing vulgar and pronographic content. The organisation asserts these shows have damaged ‘social harmony’. The rules in place are not enough The NGO pointed out that the ‘self regulation’ code adopted by OTT platforms has not been effective in deterring the production of content that may be offensive to society. It added that the new IT Rules put forth by the Indian government to regulate OTT platforms suffer from many flaws and loopholes. Supreme Court orders to pause all cases against Netflix, Amazon Prime and others in High Courts across India

Amazon India on Friday announced that its smart assistant Alexa that completed one year of its existence is now available on both Android and iOS smartphones in the country. The customers can now interact with Alexa in Hindi using the Alexa app on their mobile devices. "In an effort to make Alexa in Hindi more useful for customers, we have added over 60 new features in the past year. These include improvements such as asking Alexa to whisper, adjust how fast or slow she speaks, and new experiences such as asking Alexa for health-related information, Hindi definitions of words in English, Audible Suno and so on," Puneesh Kumar, Country Leader for Alexa, Amazon India, told IANS. Many users are also purchasing Amazon Echo devices for their parents as they are more comfortable to speak to the devices in Hindi. "We will continue to make Alexa interactions in Hindi even more seamless and conversational. It is still Day 1," Kumar added. Amazon has also added six new Alexa original songs and poems, along with 20 new stories in Hindi. Alexa now has a special message for all users in India. Just ask "Alexa, hamari dosti par poem sunao". Alexa can now understand 50 different ways to play a particular song in Hindi. The Alexa Speech Science team has used the latest advances in deep neural networks, multi-dialect training, and semi-supervised learning to reduce Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) errors by more than 40 per cent since the launch of Hindi last year. The company said that Alexa is now equipped with hundreds of new words from the Hindi vocabulary, and is also able to understand different ways in which customers can ask for the same information. "Users of the Alexa in Hindi have a unique taste in music. In addition to asking for Bollywood music, they are most likely to ask for devotional and spiritual songs. We also noticed increased requests for songs related to festive occasions such as Raksha Bandhan songs or Chhath Puja," Kumar told IANS. At the launch last year, Amazon had over 500 Hindi skills. Today, it has over 1,000 Hindi Skills, including Audible Suno, Ramayan Katha, Devotional Stories by Hungama, Shilpa Shetty Yoga, Jungle Safari, Kabir's Dohe, Rekhta, Hindi Jokes and so on. Alexa in Hindi can be experienced on the entire Amazon Echo range of smart speakers, Alexa built-in devices by other brands, the company said. Amazon Alexa in Hindi comes to smartphones in India as it turns one

<ul><li><keyword id="2706733" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon-alexa">Amazon Alexa</keyword>, on average, spends 15 hours a day singing songs to Indian users across all its devices in the country. </li><li>Of those 15 hours, at least one hour a day is spent singing 'Happy Birthday'.</li><li>While use of smart speakers in growing worldwide, penetration in India market is around 20.9%, outperforming penetration in other countries.</li></ul>Amazon Alexa has been in India for little over a year now and despite the increasing abundance of music apps like Spotify, JioSaavn, Gaana and YouTube in the country, Indian users of Echo devices want to hear Alexa sing. According to Amazon India, the virtual assistant spends 15 hours a day, on average across all devices, singing songs in her own voice — not through music apps. “What can be more natural to a customer to interact with technology than voice,” Dilip RS, the country manager of Alexa Skills at Amazon, told Business Insider India. Of those 15 hours, at least one hour a day is spent singing ‘Happy Birthday’ for Indian users. While Amazon has not specified how many Alexa-enabled devices have been sold in India, they claim that the total number of devices sold, if stacked one on top of the other, would be over four times taller than Mount Everest. One of the determining factors is that Alexa isn’t just available through Echo devices but through TV, mobile phones, the FireTV stick,and third-party speakers like Bose and BoAt. “It’s not just about the echo set of devices. We work with a lot of third-party devices to make sure that Echo is available everywhere,” Dilip explains. Even skills on Alexa, like singing songs, have grown by from 10,000 to 20,000 skills in the one year that the virtual assistant has been in India. Dilip adds, “India has one of the largest developer markets in the world — four million developers. <ul><li>Amazon India is converting its biggest sellers into wholesale companies in to order to be compliant with India’s new e-commerce rules. </li><li>Cloudtail and Appario — two of Amazon’s largest vendors —- will sell to a battery of third-party ‘preferred’ vendors according to reports. </li><li>Some of the items that are sold by Cloudtail and Appario are currently unavailable on Amazon India as the company changes its affiliates’ business models.</li></ul>Some items might be unavailable on Amazon India right now but that will soon change as Amazon India is reportedly turning two of its largest vendors — Cloudtail and Appario — into wholesale companies. In order to be compliant with India’s new e-commerce rules — that bars e-commerce companies from selling products supplied by affiliate companies on their shopping sites — Amazon is going to start selling via vendors instead of selling directly to customers <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/amazon-plans-wholesale-makeover-to-become-ecommerce-fdi-compliant/67826264">according</a> to a report by ETtech. Retail to wholesale The e-commerce policy only dictates that e-commerce giants like Amazon India can’t sell products to customers if it the vendor supplying the product is a company in which Amazon has stake. While Cloudtail is a 49-51 joint venture between Amazon and Catamaran India, Appario is a 49-51 joint venture between the online e-commerce giant and the Patni Group. If Cloudtail and Appario were to become wholesale vendors instead, then they would only be supplying their products to third-party ‘prefered’ vendors through Amazon Business in India — Amazon’s Indian B2B marketplace. These third-party ‘preferred’ vendors would then sell those products on the Amazon India portal. Every wholesale vendor has the right to pick its preferred retailer for the products they are selling. Sources told ETtech that Amazon hasn’t completely set aside the idea to sell off its stake to order to comply with the new guidelines, but the wholesale route is a faster process, it will comply with the new forms and Amazon still continues to enjoy the value from the both the companies. The good news for consumers is that items supplied by Amazon will still be available on the site. Category managers at Amazon india are currently figuring out which vendors are ‘preferred’ sellers for each of the brand’s categories. The Amazon Echo smart speakers are still on sale, even though Appario is no longer the supplier. Other brands should be live in the marketplace soon once the business model has been realigned. The new guidelines were issues on December 26 after which, both e-commerce giants — Walmart and Amazon — teamed up to seek an extension of the February 1 deadline but with no success. Local e-commerce players are looking forward to the much anticipated relief from competing against deep discounts and traditional retailers are hoping to regain some market share.
