<ul><li>Bharti Airtel has discontinued its ₹49 entry level prepaid recharge plan and started ₹79 smart recharge offer.</li><li>Shares of the company rose 5% after the company announced the development.</li><li>With this, the telecom operator says it is focusing on offering superior connectivity solutions.</li></ul>Shares of Bharti Airtel gained 5% as the company announced that it has discontinued its cheapest prepaid recharge plan of ₹49. Instead it has started a new prepaid recharge pack of ₹79 that offers up to four times more outgoing minutes of usage to customers along with twice the amount of data. Basically, it has hiked its cheapest prepaid plan to ₹79. “This change is in line with the company’s focus on offering superior connectivity solutions. Airtel customers on entry level recharges can now stay connected for longer without worrying about their account balance,” the company said in a BSE statement. “If they have hiked the plan the stock would have reacted but I don’t think there is any long term positive on the stock...eventually they will have to compete with Jio and Vodafone Idea and the space is so overcrowded that eventually none of these players have any pricing power at all.. The stock has really gone nowhere in 13 years now and unlikely to as right now they are competing in a market which is so stiff that everybody wants to gain market share,” said Rajat Sharma, founder of Sana Securities. Traders in the market must have found this announcement as a positive and that is why the rise in stock price, added Sharma. Moreover, a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/why-bharti-airtel-and-other-telecom-stocks-are-rallying-in-a-weak-market/articleshow/84819255.cms">report</a> said the telecom stocks were rallying as a report suggested that the government was considering a slew of long-term measures to improve the health of the debt-laden telecom sector, which includes prospectively redefining adjusted gross revenue (AGR) to exclude ‘non-telecom’ items and allowing telcos to surrender unused spectrum for a small penalty. As per The Economic Times report, the government was also considering other measures with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) including a reduction in licence fees (LF) and spectrum usage charges (SUC) and phasing out of bank guarantees. Jio has now launched a new all-in-one pack for ₹222, which will give users 1,000 minutes free talk time for calls made to any other non-Jio number. It has also introduced a few other packs for ₹333 and ₹444, which also offer up to 3,000 minutes free talk-time to other numbers while Jio to Jio calls remain free with all the all-in-one packs. This move comes right after Jio <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/reliance-jio-withdraws-two-cheap-recharge-packs/articleshow/71681410.cms">withdrew its cheapest packs</a> worth ₹19 and ₹52 and Jio’s much talked move to charge its users 6 paise per minute for calls. Jio’s cheapest pack now comes at ₹98. This is the first time that the Mukesh Ambani-led telecom network is moving away from cheap mobile tariff plans which has been its USP, since launch in 2016. Jio vs Vodafone Jio still faces big competition from India’s largest telecom provider Vodafone Idea. Jio has 348.2 million subscribers and Vodafone Idea has 375 million subscribers according to latest data from Telecom Regulatory of India. Vodafone Idea still offers multiple unlimited calls packs which start for as low as ₹119 for 28 days. However, Jio’s new pack offers 2GB data per day, while most of Vodafone’s packs (which are cheaper than Jio) continue to give its users 1 GB data per day. Jio vs Airtel Jio overtook Airtel to be India’s second largest telecom provider. However, Airtel still continues to hold a massive user base of 327.9 million. Airtel offers packs for ₹178, ₹248, ₹495 and ₹595 which give its new customers unlimited calls along with data each day. There are five new plans in total starting at ₹501 and going up to ₹2,595. The new plans have been introduced to include the recently launched Disney+ Hotstar Mobile plan. Vi previously offered the Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription along with its recharge plans. In addition to a one year subscription of Disney+ Hotstar, these Vi prepaid plans also offer unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day and 3GB of data per day along with extra data up to 48GB. Customers also get access to Vi Movies and TV Classic service for movies, TV shows, live TV and news. There’s also a data add-on pack priced at ₹601 that offers 75GB of data and Disney+ Hotstar Mobile for one year. This booster pack can be used along with an existing recharge plan. These prepaid plans also come with Vi’s ‘Binge All Night’ and ‘Weekend Data Rollover” offers. Under the Binge All Night offer, Vi users can get unlimited data between 12 am and 6 am daily.
