New Delhi, May 18 () Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Monday posted a consolidated loss of Rs 5,237 crore for the January-March quarter of 2019-20 fiscal mainly on account of provisions for statutory dues. The company had posted a profit of Rs 107.2 crore in the same period a year ago. Bharti Airtel registered consolidated revenue of Rs 23,722.7 crore during the reported quarter. The company had posted revenue of Rs 20,602.2 crore in the corresponding quarter of 2018-19. The company posted exceptional items totalling Rs 7,004 crore during the quarter ended on March 31, 2020, that comprises a charge on account of reassessment of regulatory cost. For the year ended on March 31, 2020, the company posted a net loss of Rs 32,183.2 crore and a revenue of Rs 87,539 crore. For 2018-19, Bharti Airtel had reported a net profit of Rs 409.5 crore and revenue of Rs 80,780.2 crore. PRS MBI MRMR

New Delhi, Feb 4 () Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Tuesday posted a consolidated loss of Rs 1,035 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2019.
The company had recorded a profit of Rs 86 crore a year ago.
The company's revenue, however, increased by 8.5 per cent to Rs 21,947 crore for December quarter compared to Rs 20,231 crore in the same period last year.
"While tariff revision undertaken in December 2019 is a welcome step towards repairing the financial health of the industry, we believe tariffs must go up further for enabling the industry to invest in emerging technologies," Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO, India &amp; South Asia, Bharti Airtel said in a statement.
Bharti Airtel India revenue rose seven per cent to 15,797 crore, compared to the same period of 2018-19.
For the second quarter ended September 2019, Bharti Airtel had posted its highest ever net loss of 23,045 crore after provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore on account of the Supreme Court ruling on statutory dues. PRS MBI

Once arch rivals, Vodafone, Bharati <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> and Idea Cellular have now teamed up against <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> and complained to the government that latter’s predatory pricing has been eating up in their revenues. To make sure, the government pays heed to their outrage, the three telecom operators claimed their incompetence to invest in future technology and create jobs. The top players in the industry had met a government panel, which aims to analyse the losses in the industry. <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> backed Jio has been accused of providing cellular services at ‘too low’ a cost, which is responsible for decline in the revenue generation. According to a <keyword id="6356641" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-of-india">Times of India</keyword> report, the worst affected Airtel, which has seen a severe contraction in profitability post the aggressive launch of services by Jio in September last year, said that the return on capital employed (ROCE) had dropped down to "perilously lower levels" and is "highly likely to be negative" if relief is not provided. Airtel said losses to the industry will also restrict the government's ability to earn from the sector. Its earnings will come down by Rs 10,000 crore. "Consolidation/ reduced investments will result in loss of direct/ indirect employment." The companies have sought to increase charge for terminating a call on their networks to be increased from the existing 14 paise per minute. "The IUC rate of 14 paise is lower than actual cost. In order to make this financially viable, it is critical that traffic between operators is symmetrical," Airtel told <keyword id="6371459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="toi">TOI</keyword>. "IUC needs to be correctly determined to prevent predatory voice-pricing environment. Aggressive tariffs in voice and data have resulted in a scenario of pricing below cost with every operator," Idea told TOI, seeking the fixation of a floor price for voice and data prices. However Jio has refused to the allegations. It believes that lack of investments by them in new technologies and mounting debt are making the other rivals outrageous.

The company also said the previously reported material uncertainty on the group's ability to continue as a going concern "no longer exists" after the recent Rs 21,502 crore fund raising by it."The net exceptional charge of Rs 10,500 million (Rs 1,050 crore) during the quarter ended December 31, 2019 comprises of a charge on account of interest on the provision of license fee and spectrum usage charges recorded in the quarter ended September 30, 2019 of Rs 10,481 million pending disposal of the modification application before the Supreme Court," Airtel said.Other elements included accelerated depreciation on 3G network equipment/operating costs on network re-farming and up-gradation programme, it added.The Supreme Court, in October last year, had upheld the government's position on including revenue from non-core businesses in calculating the annual AGR of telecom companies, a share of which is paid as licence and spectrum fee to the exchequer.Bharti Airtel's liabilities added up to nearly Rs 35,586 crore, including licence fee and spectrum usage charge dues.It may be recalled that for September quarter, Airtel had posted a staggering Rs 23,045 crore net loss, after provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore on account of Supreme Court ruling on past dues.For just ended December quarter, Airtel's consolidated revenues came in at Rs 21,947 crore, up 8.5 per cent over the same period previous year. The India revenues for Q3 FY20 stood at Rs 15,797 crore, 7 per cent higher over same period previous year, while Africa revenues were up 14.2 per cent.Shares of Airtel closed 1.72 per cent higher on the BSE on Tuesday at Rs 519.10 apiece. The company announced results after the close of the market hours.The company said that consolidated mobile data traffic on network grew 73 per cent year-on-year. The company logged the "highest ever" 4G subscriber additions during the quarter at about 21 million, and benefited from up to 50 per cent tariff hike - call and data charges - it had announced in early December.Its average realisation from subscribers (Average Revenue Per User or ARPU) improved to Rs 135 in December from Rs 128 in the previous sequential quarter.Bharti Airtel CEO - India and South Asia, Gopal Vittal said that while the tariff revision undertaken in December 2019 is a welcome step towards repairing the financial health of the industry, the company believes that tariffs must go up further for enabling the industry to invest in emerging technologies.In a statement, Airtel said: "Mobile revenues have witnessed a year-on-year growth of 9.6 per cent led by a strong focus on quality customers, up-trading and in some part benefitted by the recent tariff actions, although the full impact of the tariff actions is yet to be seen".Mobile 4G data customers increased by about 60.6 per cent to 123.8 million as compared to corresponding quarter last year.The consolidated net loss before exceptional items for December quarter stood at Rs 1,080 crore, while the loss after exceptional items for the quarter was Rs 1,035 crore.The company noted that in the previous quarter, the group had recorded as a liability/provision of Rs 34,260 crore as on September 30, 2019 on account of the Supreme Court verdict on Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues."These judgements/orders have significant financial implications on the Group," Airtel said, adding that the telecom operators have filed an application for modification petition in the apex court, which is pending for disposal.Airtel said that it has recently raised Rs 21,502 crore through a combination of fresh equity issuance via qualified institutional placement and issue of convertible bonds and post the fund raising, "the management has concluded that the previously reported material uncertainty on the group's ability to continue as a going concern no longer exists".As many as 15 entities owe the government Rs 1.47 lakh crore -- Rs 92,642 crore in unpaid licence fee and another Rs 55,054 crore in outstanding spectrum usage charges.Vodafone Idea -- which is staring at unpaid statutory dues of Rs 53,038 crore, including Rs 24,729 crore of spectrum dues and Rs 28,309 crore in licence fee -- has already warned of shutdown if no relief is given.Most of the remaining liability is with state-owned BSNL/MTNL and some of the shut/bankrupt telecom companies.Reliance Jio, last month, has reported 62.5 per cent jump in its net profit for the December quarter at Rs 1,350 crore. In the same quarter last year, Airtel had posted a profit of ₹97 crore. However, the company also reported a consolidated total revenue of ₹20,738 crore, which is up by 4.7% since last year. The company which has telecom operations across Africa and India, registered better in the former. Its India revenues grew marginally by 2.8%, while its African revenues went up by 10.2%. The company’s net debt now stands at ₹1,16,646 crore. Its average revenue per user or APRU which is the amount the telecom major makes per customer, stood at ₹129. The company however said that mobile data traffic growth grew by 94% since last year. “The first quarter of the year has begun with a healthy and equitable growth across all our lines of businesses. Headline pricing remained stable, albeit at low levels,” said Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO, India &amp; South Asia. The total number of employees have also gone up from 21,434 in June 2018 to 19,490 by the end of June 2019. The company said that it is working on improving network coverage. “We re-farmed spectrum from 3G networks to 4G across both the 900 as well as 2100 bands and begun the process of shutting down 3G networks in India. This has enabled us to deliver improved indoor coverage as well as enhance our capacities,” said Vittal. Airtel has been dealing with the rising pressure from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio. In May 2019, Reliance Jio overtook Airtel to be the second largest telecom network provider in terms of user base, whereas in terms of revenue it has already overtaken Vodafone Idea to hold the number uno position. Airtel lost 1.5 million users in May alone – it went from 321.8 million users in April to have 320.3 million. Its total consumer base stands at 404 million across 16 countries.
