<ul><li>Reliance Jio is asking TRAI to either reduce or remove Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC). </li><li>TRAI had initially planned to remove IUC charges from January 1, 2020 under the Bill and Keep (BAK) regime. </li><li>Airtel and Vodafone Idea were against the move, citing huge costs involved in allowing incoming calls from the Jio network.</li></ul> Reliance Jio approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to either reduce or remove Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC). Currently, IUC is charged at 6 paise per minute by the operator on whose network the calls terminate. In October, Reliance Jio announced that it will start charging 6 paise per minute for calls that are made to other networks. This change was made on packs which promised complete free calling earlier. Jio-to-Jio calls however continued to remain free. At the time, Jio noted that this charge would be levied until TRAI removes IUC charges. TRAI had initially planned to remove IUC charges from January 1, 2020 under the Bill and Keep (BAK) regime. However, incumbent operators Airtel and Vodafone Idea were against the move, citing huge costs involved in allowing incoming calls from the Jio network. Last week, TRAI held an open discussion on “Review of Interconnection Usage Charges”. Jio’s representative at the discussion held that since voice calling symmetry has been achieved between Jio and the incumbent operators, there was no need to levy IUC charges anymore. The company <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jio-urges-trai-for-removal-or-reduction-of-iuc-charges-4645571.html">held</a> that the BAK regime should be implemented as planned from January 1, 2020. The implementation of this regime would bring down IUC charges to zero. Airtel and Vodafone Idea opposed this argument and demanded that IUC charges of 6 paise per minute should be levied for the next three years at least. Reliance Jio alleged that Airtel and Vodafone Idea were diverting their incoming voice call traffic to 2G or 3G networks to inflate their voice call costs. This could hold some merit as we’ve experienced that incoming voice calls on Airtel’s network are routed via 2G, which puts the Jio 4G network on pause temporarily even on a compatible dual 4G VoLTE smartphone. Airtel however denied these allegations. Vodafone Idea, on its part, did not expressly deny this and stated that subscribers were free to port out of their network. Reliance Jio asks TRAI to either reduce or remove IUC charges

New Delhi, Dec 10 () Telecom company Bharti Airtel on Tuesday launched voice over Wi-Fi service, and said the industry-first offering will "significantly enhance" indoor voice calling experience for smartphone customers at no extra charge.
'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling' enables Airtel smartphone customers to switch seamlessly from LTE (Long-Term Evolution) to Wi-Fi based calling when they are inside their homes/offices, the company said in a statement, adding that there will be no extra charge for voice calls made with the service.
The offering currently available in Delhi/NCR, and it will be rolled out across the country in coming days.
"With 'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling', customers with Wi-Fi at home or office will get excellent signal quality indoors. There will be no extra charge for calls made over 'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling' and the application consumes minimal data," the statement said.
Commenting on the development, Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer of Bharti Airtel said, "Seamless indoor coverage has been a key ask from mobile customers but getting permissions for site installations has always been a big challenge for mobile operators, particularly in top metros. 'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling'...will go a long way in making the voice calling experience more seamless".
The service will not require any app and can be configured on the smartphone. Users will need to check smartphone compatibility on airtel.in/wifi-calling, upgrade device operating software to the latest version that supports Wi-Fi Calling, and then go to settings and switch on Wi-Fi calling to get started.
The smartphones that currently support 'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling' include all iPhone series starting 6s and above, Xiaomi's Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro and POCO F1, Samsung's J6, A10s, On6, M30s, as well as all models of OnePlus 7 Series.
"Airtel is working with all leading smartphone brands to roll out compatibility with 'Airtel Wi-Fi Calling'," the company said.
The service is currently compatible with Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband and will soon be compatible with all broadband services and Wi-Fi hotspots, it added. MBI BAL

Airtel launches Voice over Wi-Fi service for better indoor voice call

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Jio+Infocomm+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Reliance Jio Infocomm </a>has been accused of many things since the telecom newcomer offered a bag full of deals and the competitors were threatened by it but this time <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> has asked telecom regulator <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TRAI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TRAI</a> to "impose highest penalty" on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel</a>, as according to Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>, <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> grossly exaggerated the value of data in a promotional offer, and gave misleading tariff ads. 
 
In a letter, Jio has alleged Airtel that in so far as the advertisements issued by Airtel for pre-paid and post-paid tariff packs are concerned, the unlimited calls and free data being offered by Airtel is in "gross violation of extant telecommunication laws". 
 
Things just didn’t end here, Jio has further charged Airtel of misrepresenting the benefits as free unlimited calls without indicating the applicability of Fair Usage Policy (FUP). It says that the free calls under Airtel's Special Tariff Voucher 345 were not really unlimited as Airtel has implemented a FUP of 300 minutes/day or 1,200 minutes/week, post which all calls are chargeable. 
 
"Therefore, these prepaid packs do not provide unlimited free calling to customers. This fact is not discernable from the advertisements of Airtel and neither does Airtel specify in the advertisements that such limitations apply or are conceived as part of the terms and conditions," Jio claimed. 
 The company also claimed that FUP related information is provided only by call centre executives of Airtel and that too when the issue is specifically highlighted to them. According to Jio, this was violative and inconsistent with <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>'s instructions dated September 10, 2010. 
 
On Airtel's advertisement of 'Free data for 12 months, worth Rs 9,000' on the prepaid STV of Rs 345, Jio alleged that the data benefits were available only on paying Rs 345 and therefore, could not be termed free. 
 
"Further, post expiry of the data benefits in the pack, the subscriber is charged at pay-as-you-go rates, therefore, the free data claims are grossly misleading," it said.

The sector’s average revenue per user will go up by ₹9, and in general increase by 15-18% according to the rating agency. Like Jio says in its tweet, this amount will be going to Vodafone Idea and Airtel as Jio can no longer get away without paying telecom department’s mandatory inter-connection (IUC) charges. This is the charge paid to a network which is receiving calls, by the network from where a call originates. In an ideal situation, the amount all networks pay each other should balance out—considering their subscriber number is around the same. However, that is not to be. Jio has the most to lose. The offnet minutes of usage is 64% for Jio, while it is at 41% for Voda-Idea and 45% for Airtel. “Also, of the total offnet voice traffic, net incoming minutes as a proportion of total offnet minutes stands at negative 29% for R-Jio whereas the same is 9% and 19% for Airtel and Voda-Idea respectively, implying that network voice traffic imbalance is significantly higher for R-Jio compared with peers. Hence, R-Jio remains a net-payer of IUC expenses, whereas Voda-Idea and Airtel are net-receivers of IUC receipts,” says India Ratings. Basically, calls originate from Jio and land on other networks. Jio users continue to keep other network SIMs It means that more people are using Jio SIMs for its cheap data plans, and also for making the ‘free’ calls it offers. It makes sense as Jio’s data tariffs are 25-30% cheaper than that of Airtel and Voda-Idea. Yet, users have not given up their basic SIMs which belonged to other networks, and continue to exist. These numbers are ‘primary’ phone numbers which are key to their bank accounts and other necessary identifications. And, few seem to believe that cheap tariff party will not continue to exist. All mixed with the ease of owning multiple SIMs have played against Jio. Had subscribers chosen to keep only Jio connections and get rid of others, they would have ported to it. Looks like not many have done that.

 Last week, the India's largest telecom firm shocked the subscribers by fixing higher tariff for VoIP calls for its pre-paid subscribers. However, <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> has now decided to halt its decision. 
 
The telecom operator has said: "In view of the news reports that a consultation paper will be issued shortly by (regulator) TRAI on issues relating to services offered by OTT players including VoIP, we have decided not to implement our proposed launch of VoIP packs." 
 The decision has also brought a big relief for Airtel users as they don’t have to pay an extra amount on using <keyword id="6377887" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Skype">Skype</keyword>, Viber, Line and other Internet telephony to connect with their loved ones this New Year.

New Delhi, Jan 10 () Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Friday said its mobile customers across the country can now use its Wi-Fi calling service using any Wi-Fi network.
 Airtel, which had introduced voice-over Wi-Fi last month, said the service has crossed one million users.
 The service enables customers to switch seamlessly from LTE to Wi-Fi-based calling when they are inside their homes or offices, thereby enhancing indoor voice calling experience for smartphone customers. There are no extra charges for making calls via Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
 "Following the extremely positive customer feedback, the company has accelerated the roll-out of its innovative service across the country. Airtel Wi-Fi calling is now available to Airtel mobile customers across India," a statement said.
 It added that the service can now be accessed by Airtel mobile customers over any home or public Wi-Fi network.
 The company said it has been engaging with smartphone manufacturers to make all popular smartphone models compatible with the service.
 Over 100 smartphone models across 16 brands are now compatible with Airtel Wi-Fi calling, it added.
 "The technology has transformed the indoor network quality for Airtel mobile customers, particularly in high population density areas in urban markets. Airtel is also the first to make the service LIVE across India and our customers can use the feature on any Wi-Fi," Bharti Airtel Chief Technology Officer Randeep Sekhon said.
 Earlier this week, Reliance Jio had launched voice and video calling over Wi-Fi service. The company had said Jio Wi-Fi calling, which works on the largest ecosystem of handsets, will also allow users to make video calls over Wi-Fi. SR HRS

New Delhi, Nov 20 () Shares of Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel remained in heavy demand on Wednesday, with the former surging up to 32 per cent, after announcing a hike in mobile phone call and data charges from December.
 Vodafone Idea shares zoomed 31.72 per cent to Rs 7.93 on the BSE. This is the fourth consecutive day of rise in Vodafone Idea shares. During this time, the scrip has more than doubled.
 Bharti Airtel also rose 3.11 per cent to hit its 52-week high of Rs 452.95, registering its fourth consecutive day of gain. In four days, the stock has gained 24.90 per cent.
 Faced with intense competition and unprecedented statutory dues, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea on Monday announced a hike in mobile phone call and data charges from December saying the increase was warranted for viability of their business.
 "To ensure that its customers continue to enjoy world class digital experiences, Vodafone Idea will suitably increase the prices of its tariffs effective December 1, 2019," Vodafone Idea had said.
 The telecom sector is highly capital-intensive with fast-changing technology cycles that require continuing investments, Bharti Airtel said.
 "It is, therefore, extremely important that the industry remains viable to support the vision of Digital India. Accordingly, Airtel will appropriately increase price offerings in the month beginning December," it added. SUM ANS

Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel continue rally for fourth consecutive session

New Delhi, Nov 19 () Shares of Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel were in heavy demand on Tuesday, with the former rising sharply by up to 35 per cent after both the companies announced a hike in mobile phone call and data charges from December.
 The company's scrip zoomed 34.68 per cent to close at Rs 6.02 on the BSE. During the day, it advanced 42.95 per cent to Rs 6.39.
 Bharti Airtel shares also rallied 7.36 per cent to Rs 439.25 at close of trade. In intra-day, it climbed 8.87 per cent to Rs 445.45 -- its 52-week high.

Some days ago, everyone on the street was worried about huge losses posted by Airtel and Vodafone Idea after the Supreme court verdict on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) issue but, the market took this as worst is over scenario for the sector and the market is playing on better days ahead which led a sharp rally in telecom stocks," Santosh Meena, senior analyst, TradingBells said.
