"We will be operating 292 flights today. We have mobilised all resources and Air India will support us by operating on 20 of our routes. However, 74 of our flights stand cancelled and we urge our guests booked to fly with us to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport," the airline said in a statement. In case their flight is cancelled or delayed beyond three hours, the carrier said the passengers may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees. Air India Express cancels 74 flights due to cabin crew shortage, to operate 292 flights

The decision came after the <keyword id="6354705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Directorate-General-of-Civil-Aviation" source="Orion">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (DGCA) conducted a spot audit of Air India in January, during which evidence was collected and fleet-wise random reports were analysed. "The analysis of reports and evidence revealed that <keyword id="20879472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india-limited" source="keywords">Air India Limited</keyword> operated flight(s) with both flight crew aged above 60 years flying together in a few instances. "... the operator was also found deficient in providing adequate weekly rest, adequate rest before &amp; after ultra-long range flights and adequate rest on layover to the flight crew, which violates the extant provisions of the <keyword id="20777683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="civil-aviation-requirements" source="keywords">Civil Aviation Requirements</keyword> pertaining to FDTL," the regulator said in a release. Further, the DGCA said there were instances of exceeding duty periods, wrongly marked training records and overlapping duties. On March 1, the regulator issued a show cause notice to Air India with respect to the violations. "The operator submitted its response to the show cause notice, which was not found satisfactory. Pursuant to the non-satisfactory response submitted by the operator, a fine of Rs 80,00,000 has been imposed on the operator," the release said.

The sources on Wednesday said several cabin crew members started reporting sick since Monday evening and as there are not enough cabin crew members, "scores of flights" have been cancelled at various airports, including Kochi, Calicut and Bangalore. Late last month, a union representing a section of the Air India Express cabin crew alleged that the airline is being mismanaged and there is a lack of equality in the treatment of the staff. Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU), a registered union, which claims to represent around 300 cabin crew members, mostly seniors, had also alleged that mismanagement of the affairs has affected the morale of the employees. Many passengers took to social media on Wednesday complaining about the sudden cancellation of flights. In response to a passenger's post on X about flight cancellation, Air India Express apologised and said the flight was cancelled "due to operational reasons". "As part of our service recovery process, you can either opt to reschedule the flight within the next 7 days or request a full refund through our chat bot Tia...," the airline said in a post on X. The disruption caused by the mass sick leave affected more than 95 flights of Air India Express between Tuesday evening and Wednesday, impacting over 10,000 passengers. The disruption in flight operations stemmed from the delay and cancellation of over 90 international and domestic flights due to cabin crew members reporting sick. In response to this, Air India Express CEO, Aloke Singh, announced plans to reduce flight operations in the coming days. Singh said that since Tuesday evening, "over 100 of cabin crew colleagues have reported sick prior to their rostered flight duty, at the last minute, severely disrupting our operations. Because this action was mostly by colleagues assigned L1 role, the impact was disproportionate, disrupting 90+ flights even though other colleagues reported for duty." He emphasised that the behaviour of a few does not represent the dedication of the majority of the airline's cabin crew, who continue to serve guests with dedication and pride. "This act is certainly not representative of the 2,000-odd cabin crew colleagues in the company who continue to respond to the call of duty and serve our guests with dedication and pride. I am thankful to all who are standing by the airline in this hour of crisis," he said in a statement. Singh invited staff for discussions to address any concerns they may have and assured that all communication channels are open. The cancellations and delays prompted the Ministry of Civil Aviation to seek a detailed report from Air India Express. Air India Express terminates 25 employees, day after mass sick leave

One such incident happened on 09 May when a Chicago-bound, 16-hour Air India flight from New Delhi landed six hours late because of a rule that had no room for <a href="https://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/air-india-may-have-to-pay-almost-rs-60-crore-penalty-to-323-passengers-for-flight-delay-345581.html?utm_source=FB&amp;utm_medium=paid" data-type="tilCustomLink">accommodating</a> ‘relaxations’. The flight carrying 323 passengers was due to land in Chicago but because of bad weather, it was diverted to Milwaukee airport, just 19 minutes flight time away. Ideally, the flight could have flown back to Chicago after two hours but a recent mandate by the <keyword id="6354705" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="directorate-general-of-civil-aviation">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (<keyword id="6354787" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DGCA">DGCA</keyword>) said that regardless of circumstances, there would be no relaxation of the flight duty time limitation (FDTL) of the crew rule. So basically, the Air India crew that was servicing the flight has to be relieved and a fresh crew had to be driven in from Chicago to take over. Needless to say, this caused the unwarranted six-hour delay but passenger woes did not end there. The passengers were not allowed to get off the plane since the Milwaukee airport that was overburdened by a number of diverted flights had no gates available for the passengers to disembark. Among the passengers were a number of wheelchair-bound people, infants and an autistic child who was on her first flight. This kid had to seek medical attention at the Milwaukee airport. By the time the flight reached its final destination, the passengers were inside the flight for over 28 hours in all. Air India’s woes were multiplied when they were slapped with $8.8 million penalty fee for 'tarmac delay' that is to be paid to the passengers. The US guideline states that if international flights’ passengers are onboard for more than four hours, the airline is liable to pay $27,500 per passenger onboard. Air India, along with and the <keyword id="118746" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Federation-of-Indian-Airlines">Federation of Indian Airlines</keyword> (FIA) that represents private carriers (Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir), filed a plea in the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> seeking modification of the court’s direction to DGCA on April 18 to not permit variations in FDTLs. And the abovementioned incident was cited as an example in court during the hearing on 15 May. "A diversion by its very nature is unscheduled -- diversion due to medical emergency or any other reason. In such cases unless dispensation (variation) is accorded, flights will be grounded and passengers put to untold hardships. This is not to mention the huge penalties involved," said an airline official.

Air India may have to pay $8.8 million to passengers because it followed rules

Acting on the urination incident onboard an <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> <keyword id="267936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-york-delhi" source="Orion">New York-Delhi</keyword> flight last November, the flag carrier on Saturday issued show cause notices and de-rostered four cabin crew and a pilot pending investigation. Air India has also initiated internal investigations into whether there were lapses by other staff on other aspects, including the service of alcohol on flight, incident handling, complaint registration and grievance handling. In a statement, <keyword id="5863894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="campbell-wilson" source="Orion">Campbell Wilson</keyword>, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, said: "Air India is deeply concerned about the in-flight instances where customers have suffered due to the condemnable acts of their co-passengers on our aircraft. We regret and are pained about these experiences. "Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground and is committed to taking action." The CEO said that the airline has initiated multiple steps with a view to materially strengthen and improve how such incidents would be addressed in future, which includes commencing a comprehensive education program to strengthen crews' awareness of and compliance with policies on the handling of incidents and unruly passengers, and to better equip crew to empathetically assist those affected, review of the airline policy on service of alcohol in flight and review the meeting frequency of the DGCA-prescribed "Internal Committee", tasked with assessing incidents, so that cases are assessed and decisions reached in a more timely manner. The steps also include improving the robustness of its legacy incident reporting processes, which are presently paper-based and manual, Air India signed a Letter of Intent in December 2022 to acquire a license for the market-leading provider of incident management software, <keyword id="15995247" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coruson" source="Orion">Coruson</keyword>. In addition to this state-of-the-art software, the airline is also in the process of deploying iPads to Pilots and Senior Cabin Crew. Air India flight AI 173 operating Delhi-SFO on June 6, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew on board, was diverted to the <keyword id="2438648" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="magadan" source="Orion">Magadan</keyword> port city in far east Russia following a mid-air glitch in one of the <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> 777-200LR aircraft engines. On Wednesday, the airline dispatched a ferry flight to Magadan from Mumbai to fly the stranded passengers and crew from there to <keyword id="12161" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="san-francisco" source="Orion">San Francisco</keyword>. The replacement aircraft, which landed at Magadan at 06.14 am (local time) had got airborne at 1027 hours (local time) on June 8, for San Francisco, where it touched down at 12.07 am on June 8. Besides expressing "regret" for the disruption and inconvenience, the airline also "sincerely apologised" to the customers for the "extended delay" in bringing them to their destination, as per the communication. "The aircraft encountered a technical issue whereby the pilots received an indication of low oil pressure in one engine. Out of caution, they elected to land the aircraft at a nearby airport rather than continue the journey," Air India said. Maintaining that the safety was the highest priority throughout, it said that "while the facilities in Magadan, a small city, may not have met the standard we would normally aim to provide, we are grateful for your tolerance and understanding that our local agents and crew did their best under the circumstances." It may be mentioned here that after initially stating that the passengers and crew were accommodated "in hotels locally," Air India later said that the "infrastructure constraints" forced it to lodge them in make-shift accommodations. Air India in the communication also said that though it dispatched a relief flight at the earliest possible opportunity given the need to obtain insurance and flight plan approvals, clearly, the duration of delay was "long", and the "experience was not what we aspire to offer". "As such, we will fully refund the fare for your journey and, in addition, provide you a voucher for future travel on Air India," the Tata group airline said.
