For others, it’s an instinctive way to greet friends or family. But how did this intimate gesture evolve? A new study has proposed a fascinating theory on the origins of kissing: it may have started with <keyword id="23718383" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grooming-behaviors" source="keywords">grooming behaviors</keyword> among our ancient ape ancestors, particularly the social grooming of <keyword id="20623738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="great-apes" source="keywords">great apes</keyword> like <keyword id="22141070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chimpanzees" source="keywords">chimpanzees</keyword> and bonobos. <h2>Not just a kiss</h2>Every culture has its own “rules” for kissing. In ancient Rome, kisses had distinct names depending on the context: the osculum was a kiss on the cheek, the basium a non-romantic kiss on the lips, and the savium an erotic kiss. Other types of kisses, such as a kiss on the hand or feet to show respect, have long ceremonial and religious histories. Today, in parts of Europe, two or even three cheek-to-cheek kisses are a common greeting. In Belgium, it’s typically only one. Travel to Oman, and a handshake might be followed by a quick kiss on the nose. Kissing rituals are remarkably diverse, and it’s clear that kissing is deeply woven into our social fabric. A 2015 study looked at 168 cultures and found that less than half engaged in <keyword id="23718384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="romantic-kissing" source="keywords">romantic kissing</keyword>. Many indigenous hunter-gatherer societies avoid kissing altogether and even find it distasteful. In fact, only 46% of the cultures studied practiced any form of romantic kissing. <h2>The “Groomer’s Final Kiss”</h2>The researchers propose that the roots of kissing lie in grooming practices. Great apes are known to groom each other by picking through fur to remove debris or parasites — a gesture that serves to reinforce social bonds within their groups. Lead researcher Adriano R. Lameira’s team suggests that, as early humans lost their body hair, these grooming sessions grew shorter, eventually evolving into a quick peck or “groomer’s final kiss” as a symbol of affection and connection. According to the study, ancestral grooming would end with a protruding of the lips and slight suction, mirroring the physical form and function of a modern kiss. This vestigial act, they argue, might have evolved as a way to symbolise intimacy, even as its original function faded. <h2>Parallels in the animal world</h2>While chimpanzees and bonobos occasionally engage in behaviors that resemble kissing, it’s tough to find exact parallels in other animal species. Some animals nuzzle or bump noses, but most lack a “true kissing” behavior. One notable exception is capuchin monkeys, who show affection by sticking fingers in each other’s eyes and noses. Such gestures, though wildly different, serve similar bonding functions and show that behaviors conveying affection vary widely across species. The grooming hypothesis is one of many theories that attempt to explain the origins of kissing. Some researchers believe kissing could have evolved from early nurturing behaviors, such as when caregivers fed infants pre-chewed food. They range from Constellation Brands, the maker of Modelo, which expects fewer people to go out drinking around the election, to airlines like United and Delta, which often see passenger counts dip around Election Day.Some companies already have seen political news distract customers. When a gunman died after injuring Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July, for instance, Amazon saw some people put off making purchases on the website, CFO Brian Olsavsky said in August."A lot of times, purchases will defer and people will come back and buy what they were going to buy," Olsavsky said on a call with reporters. Slightly smaller percentages said they were holding off on an investment decision or buying a car.Consumers might be holding off on big purchases because they need loans and hope that interest rates will fall more in the months after the election, said Alex Trott, director of insights at 84.51. But some might not actually care as much about the election as the seasonal promotions that tend to follow in November and December, she added. "We are also bumping up against a holiday season where there are always sales," Trott said.People under 34 were also more likely than older consumers to put off a major financial commitment until after the election, 84.51 found.Older consumers, such as Baby Boomers and members of Gen X, "can make some of these bigger decisions," said Trott. But why do our beloved furballs seem to harbour such a deep-seated disdain for <keyword id="22935593" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="closed-doors" source="keywords">closed doors</keyword>? According to experts, it’s not just about being shut out; it’s about a primal urge deeply embedded in the cat psyche — a fear of missing out, or as we like to call it, feline <keyword id="20371650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FOMO" source="keywords">FOMO</keyword>. <h2>The curious cat conundrum</h2><keyword id="20218468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cats" source="keywords">Cats</keyword> are naturally curious creatures. Evolution has wired them to be ever-watchful, constantly surveying their territory for potential threats or opportunities. This instinct, essential for survival in the wild, translates into some rather quirky behaviours in the domestic setting. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111523471" title="Scientists studied 1,200 cats to determine why they scratch up furniture and how to stop it" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Dr Karen Sueda, an expert veterinary behaviourist, explained that cats’ <keyword id="19915761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="curiosity" source="keywords">curiosity</keyword> is more than just a casual interest. “It is a little bit of FOMO,” Sueda told LiveScience. “The FOMO of like, ‘I don’t know what’s on the other side, and I want to go see and figure it out.’” Simply put, when a door closes, a cat’s curiosity kicks into overdrive. The thought is simply unbearable! <h2>The three terrible C’s</h2>Cat behaviourist Jane Ehrlich summed it up with what she calls the “three terrible C’s” that cats can’t stand: lack of Choice, loss of Control, and Change. When a door closes, a cat loses its ability to choose its path, control its environment, and deal with an unexpected change all at once. That’s a trifecta of stress for your <keyword id="22935594" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="feline-friend" source="Orion">feline friend</keyword>. Ingrid Johnson, a <keyword id="22715590" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cat-behaviour" source="keywords">cat behaviour</keyword> consultant, added that this need for control stems from a survival strategy. “Cats like to control access to spaces and vital basic needs and territory,” she said. “It doesn’t make them mean. It just makes them a species that is both predator and prey, needing to hunt to survive but also to feel safe and secure in their environment.” <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112174724" title="I&amp;#39;m a proud, child-free cat lady. Cats also have a soft spot for human attention. A 2017 study found that many cats prefer human interaction over food or toys. When you close a door, you’re effectively cutting off their supply of <keyword id="20083229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="affection" source="keywords">affection</keyword>. And in the eyes of a cat, that’s just unacceptable. <h2>So, what can you do?</h2>First, consistency is key. If you don’t want your cat in a particular room, make it off-limits all the time, not just when guests are over. Sudden changes in access can lead to stress, and a stressed cat is an unhappy cat. Second, pay attention to your cat’s signals. If your kitty is more than just mildly annoyed — exhibiting frantic vocalising, flattened ears, or hissing — it might be time to reconsider your door policy or consult a vet.
