Mumbai, The <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> on Thursday said that it has decided to come out with a new <keyword id="20027459" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="framework" source="keywords">framework</keyword> for authentication of digital payment transactions and introduce additional norms to enhance the security of the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (<keyword id="19946538" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aeps" source="keywords">AePS</keyword>). Over the years, the <keyword id="19922074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="keywords">Reserve Bank</keyword> has prioritised security of digital payments, in particular the requirement of Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA). Although the RBI has not prescribed any particular AFA, the payments ecosystem has largely adopted SMS-based One Time Password (<keyword id="19957209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="otp" source="keywords">OTP</keyword>). With innovations in technology, alternative authentication mechanisms have emerged in recent years. "To facilitate the use of such mechanisms for digital security, it is proposed to adopt a principle-based 'Framework for authentication of digital payment transactions'. Instructions in this regard will be issued separately," the RBI said. To enhance the security of AePS transactions, it is proposed to streamline the onboarding process, including mandatory due diligence, for AePS touchpoint operators, to be followed by banks. Additional fraud risk management requirements will also be considered. Instructions in this regard shall be issued shortly, the RBI said. Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, operated by NPCI, enables customers to perform digital payment transactions in assisted mode. In 2023, more than 37 crore users undertook AePS transactions, which points to the important role played by AePS in financial inclusion.

"It's hot as fuck outside, it's hot as fuck in my house, and it's hot as fuck in my work, too," he told me. "So there's no getting away. There's no escaping it for me." This might have been considered a once-in-a-lifetime event in the past, but mass blackouts are starting to become a more regular feature of modern American life. Power outages have increased <a href="https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/surging-weather-related-power-outages" target="_blank" rel="noopener">64%</a> from the early 2000s, and weather-related outages — <a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/publications/bulletin-of-the-american-meteorological-society-bams/explaining-extreme-events-from-a-climate-perspective/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">many driven by</a> the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/01/09/1147805696/climate-change-makes-heat-waves-storms-and-droughts-worse-climate-report-confirm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worsening climate crisis</a> — have increased 78%. But it's not just nature making our grid shakier: A system that was once largely controlled by localized public entities has been handed over to layers of regional authorities and private companies whose goal is maximizing profits — not reliability. As a result, our electrical system has been plagued by decreasing reliability, lagging maintenance, and soaring costs. All this has left America's energy system woefully unprepared to handle our uncertain future.<h2>Climate-change blackouts</h2>Cities across the US are increasingly going dark at the worst moments. A record-breaking blizzard in <a href="https://www.wgrz.com/article/weather/severe-weather/timeline-of-the-wny-blizzard-of-2022-buffalo-niagara/71-31e533fe-edd2-4201-86c8-2fe678fb784e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Buffalo</a>, New York, this winter caused power outages throughout the city, resulting in the deaths of <a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/01/20/buffalo-blizzard-death-toll-rises-emergency-response-delays" target="_blank" rel="noopener">47 residents</a>. In 2021, a heat wave led to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-government-and-politics-business-environment-and-nature-6a66be20ed86ad18ed131156c9f7a517" target="_blank" rel="noopener">power outages</a> and the deaths of hundreds in the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/01/weather/pacific-northwest-extreme-heat-thursday/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pacific Northwest</a>. Texas shocked the world when a winter storm shut down power for more than 11 million people for several days in 2021, which resulted in <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/peteraldhous/texas-winter-storm-power-outage-death-toll" target="_blank" rel="noopener">700 deaths</a>, according to a BuzzFeed News analysis. And on Christmas Eve, record-breaking freezing temperatures caused <a href="https://poweroutage.us/about/majorevents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">millions</a> of people in the South — <a href="https://www.wcnc.com/article/weather/duke-energy-christmas-eve-rolling-blackouts-apology-high-electricity-demand/275-bbfa56d3-ea75-4702-a7cc-2f9e5e24209b" target="_blank" rel="noopener">500,000 just in North Carolina</a> — to lose power when the regional energy giants Duke Energy and Tennessee Valley Authority were forced to do their first-ever preventive <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/weather/2022/12/29/tva-takes-responsibility-for-christmas-eve-power-outages-in-tennessee/69764225007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rolling blackouts</a>.And it's becoming clear that these events are linked to the worsening climate crisis. An expansive <a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/publications/bulletin-of-the-american-meteorological-society-bams/explaining-extreme-events-from-a-climate-perspective/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new report</a> by top climate scientists found that the Pacific Northwest heat wave was <a href="https://ametsoc.net/eee/2021_22/AcceptedMS_BAMS-D-22-0142.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">43 times more likely</a> due to human influence on the climate. And a 2019 <a href="https://ucsusa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=e4e9082a1ec343c794d27f3e12dd006d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that the number of days that reached temperatures over 90 degrees in Ohio would likely triple to 30 to 70 days a year by midcentury. These increasingly extreme temperatures cause outages in a variety of ways. When everyone cranks up their thermostats or blasts their air conditioning, it increases demand for electricity and strains the grid's capacity. Heat also causes power lines to sag, which increases the risk of contact with trees, and frozen temperatures can <a href="https://www.apr.org/news/2023-02-18/tva-addresses-rolling-blackouts-during-frigid-christmas-weekend" target="_blank" rel="noopener">freeze power-generation equipment</a>. When intense temperatures mix with weather events like storms, a combination of damaged power lines and increased demand often leads to intentional shutdowns to avoid larger regional blackouts. In the case of the Ohio blackout, the regional transmission organization PJM Interconnection ordered the power company AEP to "load shed," or initiate a blackout in some parts of Ohio, to avoid a larger failure. The same thing happened during the Christmas freeze in the South: Power companies initiated blackouts to prevent a worse crisis. To top it off: All these events have disproportionately affected lower-income and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/28/us-racial-injustices-will-worsen-climate-crisis-escalates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historically marginalized</a> communities. The <a href="https://www.matternews.org/community/developus/data-june-aep-outage-affected-lower-income-areas-at-higher-rate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Columbus outage</a>, for instance, affected low-income neighborhoods — predominately made up of people of color — at far higher rates than medium- and high-income neighborhoods. While the extreme weather makes outages more likely, what often gets missed in the wake of these tragedies is how a decades-long fight to deregulate and privatize our electrical grid has greatly diminished the likelihood that the large-scale changes needed for a new era of extreme weather will be made.<h2>Out of local hands</h2>As electricity spread out across the country at the dawn of the 20th century, the burgeoning market was dominated by a handful of monopolies: 10 companies owned <a href="https://library.uoregon.edu/ec/wguthrie/controlofutilities.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">75% of the electricity industry</a> by 1930. The grid expanded at such a pace that states struggled to regulate these new power barons, while federal investigations found that the companies <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/heres-how-fdr-explained-making-electricity-public-180963286/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">engaged in widespread fraud</a>. As a result, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gradually streamlined the nation's electrical grid as part of the New Deal into publicly owned regional organizations. And local commissions were given clear authority to regulate the system and hold people responsible for failures.<div type="image" title="Two people working on power lines" height="1332" width="1776" msid="98941341" hostid="261" sizebytes="87836"></div>Carl Wood, a former commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission, explained that for the next 60 years, "the local utilities controlled all the parts of the system," so "it was very easy for them to predict how much power was going through the high-voltage lines." The grid would rarely get overloaded, he said, "because it was all very controlled, very planned." And since the primary goal of state regulators and local commissions was to deliver electricity to everyone, rather than gain a profit edge, the grid received regular preventive maintenance. "I was on a traveling maintenance crew, and we'd go from power plant to power plant," Wood, who's also a former Utility Workers Union of America organizer, recalled. "Every four years, every power plant was completely overhauled."But that system of local control over the grid began to erode in 1992 when Congress passed the federal Energy Policy Act. This policy established a wholesale energy market and deregulated power generation so new entities could enter into competition with the existing local utilities to sell the energy produced at their power plants. The government encouraged competition for the new market by incentivizing private utility companies while constricting existing utilities. Then in 1999, the grid was further deregulated when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission called for the voluntary creation of <a href="https://www.ferc.gov/sites/default/files/2020-06/RM99-2-00K_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">regional transmission organizations</a> across much of the US to "reduce the need for Commission oversight and scrutiny," according to the federal order.Driven by an ideological conviction after the Cold War that the future belonged to free and deregulated markets, these policies were designed to expand private markets into new frontiers. In reality, the laws created a complicated web of different private and public entities managing a chaotic electrical grid. In Ohio, for instance, residents buy their electricity from a private company like AEP, which generates electricity and distributes it to many parts of the state. AEP falls under the jurisdiction of PUCO, which regulates utilities services in the state. And then, depending on which part of the state someone lives in, the systems that transport high-voltage electricity to customers are <a href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=790" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coordinated</a> by either Midcontinent ISO or PJM Interconnection, nonprofit organizations that oversee the movement of electricity across several states and operate a competitive wholesale electricity market. And all those groups fall under the regulatory umbrella of the North American Electric Reliability Corp. and FERC. This confusing tangle of acronyms isn't unique to Ohio: If you point at a different spot on a US map, there will be a completely different string of equally convoluted private and public entities in charge of delivering electricity.Advocates for privatizing and <a href="https://www.cato.org/tax-budget-bulletin/privatizing-federal-electricity-infrastructure#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deregulating the grid argue</a> that competition increases efficiency, spurs technological innovation, and lowers prices. But instead of lowering costs or improving the grid, these policies caused <a href="https://dls.maryland.gov/pubs/prod/BusTech/Road_to_Electric_Restructuring_2006.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">energy</a> <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Texas-consumers-pay-more-in-deregulated-7972017.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prices</a> in many areas to spike and led to artificial power shortages. Statewide spending on power in California went from $7 billion in 1999 to <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/41322929?seq=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$28 billion in 2000</a> and led to the <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/blackout/california/timeline.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2000-01 California electricity crisis</a>, in which the energy company <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/04/us/tapes-show-enron-arranged-plant-shutdown.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Enron</a> created an artificial energy shortage to jack up prices. California's artificial shortage eventually triggered a real crisis as multiple large-scale rolling blackouts gripped the state, affecting millions of residents for years. And <a href="https://www.wbjournal.com/article/environmental-study-claims-gas-companies-created-artificial-shortage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports suggest these</a> profit-seeking schemes have happened in other places, too, though private-energy firms generally deny the claims.The deregulation also led to poorer maintenance, as companies tried to drive up profits by cutting costs and putting off regular maintenance. A <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/americas-power-grid-is-increasingly-unreliable-11645196772" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wall Street Journal analysis</a> found that from 2000 to 2020, the number of major outages increased from fewer than two dozen to 180. And it's gotten worse in recent years: The length of outages in 2020 was double what it was in 2013. A report last year by the American Society of Civil Engineers found that 70% of transmission and distribution lines were <a href="https://infrastructurereportcard.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Energy-2021.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">far past the second half of their expected 50-year lifespans</a>. "It's like putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg," Peter Kohnstam, the US sales director at Nexans, a global fiber-optic cable company, wrote in <a href="https://www.supplychainbrain.com/blogs/1-think-tank/post/36325-2023-the-year-to-overhaul-electricity-grids-for-a-better-future" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> calling for a complete grid overhaul.<h2>Low energy</h2>Instead of streamlining the grid, the current market-based system often results in worse outcomes. For example, in 2012, the power company Pacific Gas and Electric Co. was found to have <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/PG-E-diverted-safety-money-for-profit-bonuses-2500175.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diverted $100 million</a> that was supposed to be for gas-safety operations to bonuses for executives and stockholders. A report from the California Public Utilities Commission linked the "<a href="https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/PG-E-diverted-safety-money-for-profit-bonuses-2500175.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">focus on financial performance</a>" to safety deficiencies that contributed to a 2010 pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. Seven years later, PG&amp;E's electrical transmission lines sparked a wildfire that killed 85 people and destroyed <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/10/us/pge-power-outages-public-outrage-trnd/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thousands of homes and other buildings</a>. But the financial burden of these disasters was placed on customers: PG&amp;E <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/news/business/article235273147.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised its rates</a> to cover the expenses of the disaster. This response isn't uncommon. AEP also <a href="https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-news/aep-ohio-wants-to-raise-rates-after-major-summer-power-outage/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised its rates</a> after the summer Ohio outage. <div type="image" title="Workers replace a power line pole in California" height="3611" width="4816" msid="98941344" hostid="261" sizebytes="1025244"></div>Tyson Slocum, the director of Public Citizen's energy program, told me that while it's hard to determine based on federal outage data, his observations suggest that "for the most part, the power interruptions and service problems occur in deregulated areas." He concluded: "Replacing those regulatory mandates with market-based incentives has clearly eroded aspects of reliability."Before deregulation, utilities "were legally required to keep the lights on," Slocum told me. Now, different areas have different laws and requirements, with varying entities to enforce them. Wood told me that when he was a utilities worker in the 1980s, a power outage meant the person in charge of the utilities was getting fired. Today, that's not the case. While regional organizations might use fees to penalize companies for power outages, it's now much harder to pinpoint and hold a person or entity responsible. "You have very scattered jurisdictions — each state or each region kind of has its own set of rules and its own authorities," Wood said. While, in theory, the priority is still to keep the power on, in practice, multiple players shift the blame as the grim state of the grid remains stagnant.The mess of jurisdictions has also opened the door to corruption. PUCO, the regulatory entity that investigated AEP, was headed until 2020 by <a href="https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/politics/2020/11/16/ohio-fbi-agents-search-home-puco-chairman-sam-randazzo/6308657002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sam Randazzo</a>, who resigned after the FBI raided his home, later discovering that he accepted <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2021/07/29/firstenergy-said-it-bribed-a-regulator-for-4-3-million-heres-how-it-worked/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$4.3 million in bribes</a> from the electric utility company FirstEnergy. The dynamics of the complex market-based infrastructure of America's grid doesn't just make it harder to avoid blackouts but also <a href="https://www.citizen.org/article/modernizing-electricity-market-design/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complicates the fight for renewable energy</a> — an essential move to avoid the worsening effects of the climate crisis. Slocum said in <a href="https://www.citizen.org/article/modernizing-electricity-market-design/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> to FERC that, ultimately, the solution was to "ensure that the public interest — and not transmission owners, incumbent generators or financial traders — determine outcomes of the stakeholder process." But truly prioritizing the needs of the average American would require completely overhauling America's energy system on a scale similar to the FDR-era overhaul. New Delhi, May 4 () Average daily transactions through the Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AePS) has doubled to Rs 113 crore on account of various direct benefit transfer schemes announced by the government during the coronavirus-induced lockdown. As many as 43 crore transactions leading to disbursement of Rs 16,101 crore took place during the lockdown period, the finance ministry said in a tweet on Monday. "Avg. daily AePS transactions doubled to 113 Lakh: Total 43 Cr. transactions of Rs. 16,101 Cr. made during the lockdown. DFS Congratulates the whole banking system &amp; lauds BCs/CSPs for making it possible by providing services via biometric devices even in remote areas," it said. AePS is a bank-led model that allows online interoperable financial transactions at points of sale or micro ATMs through the business correspondents (BC) or Bank Mitras of any bank using the Aadhaar authentication. With the help of this system, doorstep delivery of cash can take place through BCs. To contain the spread of coronavirus, the government first imposed a 21-day nationwide lockdown beginning March 25 and later extended it till May 3. Now, it has further extended the lockdown by two more weeks till May 17 with extensive relaxations, including opening of industries in lower-risk green and orange zones. New Delhi, Dec 30 () Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday that the central government was issuing too many airport entry permits (AEPs) and it was time to restrict certain parts such as the baggage area to a specific set of AEP-holders.
 "The fact is that we are issuing too many airport passes...I can understand that the airport access is wanted by tourist operators and so and so," said Puri, while launching the biometric-based AEP system on Monday. 
 "I also understand that if you suddenly curtail this you have a problem on your hands because those people say that tourism industry is already moribund and you are putting more restrictions," he added. 
 Currently, around 2 lakh employees of various stakeholders -- airlines, ground handling agencies, food chain operators, etc -- have AEP passes who move in &amp; out of the airport on a daily basis.
 Covering 43 airports of AAI and five joint venture airports at present, the biometric-enabled Centralised Access Control System (CACS) project will digitise the employee movement process.
 Till date, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) - which works under the Civil Aviation Ministry - has been issuing laminated paper based AEP at the 48 airports.
 The minister said, "I am not saying that they (tourist operators, etc) should be stopped. But even amongst them, how many people do you want at the airport to be?"
 "I think we should, in a subsequent phase, start looking at some areas of the airport - especially where baggage handling is done and other things are done - it should not be open to anybody walking in," he added.
 Puri also launched the 'e-BCAS Project: Training Module' aimed at helping more than 1.5 lakh employees of various stakeholders by migrating from manual process of training to digital platform.
 All 29 Aviation Security Training Institutes (ASTIs) - most of them are run by Indian airline companies - have been registered as user entities and they can make nominations for various courses online under e-BCAS project.

We are issuing too many airport entry permits: Civil Aviation Minister

New Delhi, Jan 5 () The government on Sunday said eight states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Karnataka, have finalised action plan for agriculture export policy which aims to double such exports.
 "The Agri Export Policy was announced last year with an objective of doubling the export and ensuring doubling of farmers' income...Many states have nominated nodal agency and nodal officer. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Punjab and Karnataka have finalised the State Action Plan and other states are at different stages of finalization of the action plan," the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.
 The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been adopting a focused approach for ensuring greater involvement of the state governments for effective implementation of Agri Export Policy (AEP).
 Throughout the year APEDA held a series of meetings with state government officials and other stakeholders for preparation of state action plan which included all essential components like production clusters, capacity building, infrastructure and logistics and research and development and budget requirements for the implementation of AEP, it said.
 Several rounds of discussions were held with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Department of Animal Husbandry &amp; Dairying, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and other agencies for seeking inputs for formulating a strategy to increase exports and address the existing bottlenecks in the trade.
 State level monitoring committees have been formed in many of the states. Cluster visits have been made by APEDA nodal officers to the product clusters, it added.
 The roadmap for cluster development in the clusters notified under AEP was prepared to address the identified interventions during the cluster visits.
 "As a result of cluster visits by APEDA, the cluster level committee has been constituted in the states viz. potato in Punjab, isabgol in Rajasthan, pomegranate, orange and grapes in Maharashtra and banana in Tamil Nadu," the statement said.

8 states finalise action plan for agri export policy: Govt

Briefing the media on the Budget 2021-22 initiatives, the <keyword id="84" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce">commerce</keyword> secretary said that one primary area of focus is the creation of a robust infrastructure, logistics and utilities environment for the manufacturing sector. Some of these measures include a scheme for Mega Investment Textiles Parks (MITRA), which will create world class infrastructure with plug and play facilities to enable the creation of global champions in the sector, benefiting from economies of scale and agglomeration. Seven Textile Parks will be established over three years. He said that further, steps like substantial investments in the development of modern fishing harbours and fish landing centres will be made in five major fishing harbours at Kochi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Petuaghat, along with a multipurpose Seaweed Park in Tamil Nadu, are proposed. These measures are expected to boost exports from the textiles and marine sector. Wadhawan said that for the promotion of exports from the agriculture sector, the "Operation Green" scheme of Ministry of Food Processing Industry, which is presently limited to onion, potatoes and tomatoes, has been increased to 22 perishable items. This would promote creation of infrastructure and value addition for horticulture products. Also, the Budget allocation for the schemes such as Agriculture Export Policy (AEP) and Transport and Marketing Assistance (TMA) has been enhanced, which will help in the implementation of AEP in States and boost agriculture exports. Speaking on the plantation sector, the Commerce secretary said that Rs. 1,000 crores have been provided in the Budget for the welfare of tea workers, especially women and their children. This will benefit around 10.75 lakh tea workers, including 6.23 lakh women workers engaged in the big tea estates of Assam and West Bengal. In addition, around 1.47 lakh small tea growers are also likely to be benefited. Wadhawan said that this Budget also promotes ease of doing business through rationalisation of procedures, easing of compliances and trade facilitation measures. The measures include certain changes in the provisions relating to ADD and CVD levies, mandatory filing of bills of entry before the end of day preceding the day of arrival of goods, he added. He further added that streamlining of the ADD / CVD provisions, including measures aimed at enforcing anti-absorption, will potentially enable a level playing for domestic industry through addressing unfair trade practices. The commerce Secretary said that the Budget has proposed rationalisation of customs duty structure with a thrust on both easy and competitive access to raw material and infant industry protection objectives to encourage exports, particularly of value-added products. This includes reduction in duties on critical raw-material such as iron and steel, copper scrap, naptha, nylon fibre and yarn, etc. To rationalise the duty structure of gold and silver, the rates have been reduced to 7.5% from 12.5% with Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess of 2.5 %. Budget 2021-22 will enhance India's manufacturing capacities and boost trade, says Commerce Secretary

New Delhi, Apr 1 () E-governance services provider CSC SPV has sought permission to allow all common service centres to offer banking and essential services electronically during the lockdown to contain coronavirus spread, a top official said on Wednesday. Around 22,000 common service centres registered as banking correspondent are delivering their services and rest of the centres are operating in accordance to the permission given by state and local authorities, CSC e-Governance Services India Limited CEO Dinesh Tyagi told . "We have written to the minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) for allowing all our CSCs to provide essential services that can be provided electronically," Tyagi said. There are over 2.7 lakh CSCs operational across the country. CSCs provide financial, telemedicine, education, e-commerce, gas booking services etc. "Jharkhand government has allowed the operation of all CSCs. Haryana government has given partial permission," Tyagi said. The Haryana government has also roped in CSC for delivering telemedicine services for livestock treatment. "CSCs provide Aadhaar enabled payment services (AEPS) that can be used by people in the rural area for withdrawing cash. We have also written to banks to help village level entrepreneurs by providing them with some cash for AEPS," Tyagi said.He said that allowing this service can be instrumental in supporting government's recent announcement transfer direct cash benefit transfer through to farmers, Jan Dhan account holders and other labourers. The company said it is offering services like door-step cash delivery, deposits, funds transfer, among others in small villages and towns where ATMs and regular banking infrastructure are unavailable. It said the monetary needs of rural India are being catered through various modes such as UPI, IMPS, AePS, ATM, micro ATM, PoS. Sarvatra said as the government has announced the Rs 1.7 lakh crore financial support to the needy due to coronavirus pandemic, its AePS (Aadhar enabled Payment System) platform has witnessed an exponential rise of 353 per cent in cash withdrawals. Sarvatra's wide range of offerings have also enabled other financial institutions such as BCs (business correspondents) to successfully extend money transfer and cash disbursal services. The financial services provider said money transactions through its platform are serving customers of over 600 small co-operatives, district as well as scheduled commercial banks apart from small finance banks in the 30 states and union territories during the pandemic. The list also has large banks like ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, besides new generation small finance banks like Equitas, Jana and Capital, it added. "In the 30 days of lockdown, in addition to transactions conducted at regular ATM machines, hundreds of mobile ATM Vans and thousands of micro ATMs of our banks have provided doorstep banking services across India to 15 lakh unique customers, including senior citizens," said Mandar Agashe, founder and managing director, Sarvatra Technologies. Banking in the rural areas where Sarvatra provides its PaaS (platform as a service) services has remained unaffected in the midst of the lockdown. New Delhi, Feb 27 () India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has garnered over two crore customers in less than two years of being operational. According to a statement, IPPB had reached the landmark of one crore customers in August last year - its first year of operations. "The next 1 crore customers have been acquired and on-boarded in just five months. On an average, IPPB has been opening or maintaining a run rate of 33 lakh accounts per quarter," a statement said. The success of IPPB's business model underlines the government's intent in creating an interoperable banking infrastructure for the public good contributing toward changing the financial inclusion landscape in India, Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was quoted as saying in the statement. "Since its launch, IPPB has enabled more than 1.36 lakh post offices and 1.9 lakh dakiyas (postmen) to provide a complete suite of banking services at the doorstep of the customer providing access to any Aadhaar linked bank account, leading to an increase in rural banking infrastructure by almost 2.5 times," he added. With the launch of Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) Services in September 2019, IPPB has now become the single largest platform in the country for providing interoperable banking services to the customers of any bank, the statement said. With AePS services, any person with a bank account linked to Aadhaar can perform basic banking services such as cash withdrawals and balance enquiry irrespective of the bank they hold their account with. To avail these services, a customer with an Aadhaar-linked account can simply authenticate his or her identity with fingerprint scan and Aadhaar authentication to complete a transaction. The statement noted that IPPB has implemented one of the largest-ever digital financial literacy programme by investing over one crore man-hours in training and certifying more than 250,000 postal assistants, postmen and GDS as banking service providers. The bank has also digitised all the post office counters through a simple QR Code to accept electronic payments and also enabled direct payments into various post office saving schemes and purchase of postal products, it added. India Post Payments Bank crosses 2-cr customer mark

Mumbai, Apr 22 () Fintech firm Payworld on Wednesday said it has roped in daily workers, who earlier worked at factories and construction sites, to become retailers and hence serve the country in these tough times.The company is also providing essential banking services during lockdown. "We understand the strain that the migrant workers are facing due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown...They now have a chance to use their knowledge of mobile phones or digital money to help others in their villages. That is why we have started the initiative of co-opting them into our retailer bases to provide help and essential services such as AEPS (Aadhaar-enabled payment system), money transfers and other services like recharges and bill payments during lockdown," Payworld COO Praveen Dhabhai said in a statement.The company through its #PayworldHeroes initiative has issued certificates to extend these services which they can show to the local authorities. Paytm is one strong competitor for the firm, but its drawback is it is still making losses while Fino Payments Bank has turned profitable in FY21. Paytm reported a loss of ₹1700 crore in FY21.
