The government has relaxed provisions of <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword>/<keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="keywords">TCS</keyword> in the event of the death of the deductee/collectee before the linkage of PAN and <keyword id="19898107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="keywords">Aadhaar</keyword> card. TDS is Tax Deducted at Source and TCS is Tax Collected at Source in India.<br /><br />The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has issued a circular dated August 5, in view of genuine difficulties being faced by taxpayers. Through the circular, the government said it has relaxed the provisions of TDS/TCS, as per the Income-tax Act, in the event of death of deductee/collectee before linking of PAN and Aadhaar.<br /><br />In order to redress the grievances of the taxpayers wherein instances have been cited, of demise of the deductee/collectee on or before May 31, 2024 and before the option to link PAN and Aadhaar could have been exercised, the circular provides that there shall be no liability on the deductor/collector to deduct/collect the tax under the relevant section of <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">income tax act</keyword>, pertaining to the transactions entered into up to March 31, 2024.<br /><br />On April 23, 2024, CBDT extended the date for linking of PAN and Aadhaar May for the taxpayers (for the transactions entered into up to March 2024) to avoid higher TDS/ TCS, as per the income tax act.<br /><br />Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible to obtain <keyword id="20030312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-Number" source="keywords">Aadhaar Number</keyword>, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the income tax act.<br /><br />As per government, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows:<br /><br />1. No refund shall be made against such PANs<br />2. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative<br />3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the income tax act. <br /><br />

But there are certain things that you must remember and double-check before you click on submit ITR-from picking out the right form to ensuring that all the details you’ve furnished are correct. Read on to know the top five things that you must remember before <keyword id="19942833" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing" source="keywords">ITR filing</keyword>. <br /><br /><h2>Linking your PAN with Aadhar is mandatory</h2>Before you file your ITR, ensure that your <keyword id="19985317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pan-card" source="keywords">PAN card</keyword> is linked to your <keyword id="19952125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhar-card" source="keywords">Aadhar card</keyword>. You can’t file your ITR without linking your Pan to Aadhar first. This can be done online. For instance, the ITR-1 form is designed for resident individuals who have income from salary, one house property, and other sources such as interest or dividends, provided their total income does not exceed Rs 50 lakh. Think again! You will also need to e-verify your return. If the e-verification is not done within 30 days from filing your ITR, it will be rendered invalid, and will be considered as not filed. You will also not receive any refunds in the absence of e-verification of your ITR. You can easily e-verify your ITR via generating an OTP on your mobile number linked with Aadhar, or by generating an electronic verification code (EVC) through your pre-verified bank account or demat account. <br /><br /><h2>Check your documents and details</h2> When you are trying to get things done quickly, it isn’t uncommon to forget double-checking the details entered. Do remember to double-check all the details that you enter in your ITR. Also, filing an ITR requires certain documents like bank statements, investment proofs, <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword> certificates, Form 16 etc. Even though you don’t have to attach these documents in the ITR, you must keep them handy.<br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111402608" title="ITR filing: Documents you need to file your income tax return" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br /><h2>Check income and investment details</h2> If you have just one source of income, the process is easy as you just need to mention that in your ITR. However, if you have <keyword id="22106780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multiple-sources-of-income" source="keywords">multiple sources of income</keyword>, you need to be careful and mention all of them. Similarly, ensure that you have entered all investment details in the form correctly. Do not forget to mention your interest earned on savings and fixed deposits, dividend income (if any) or income from other sources, since that could lead to hefty penalties. <br /><br />

Online scams in India have been on the rise for the last few months and every now and then, a new case surfaces where a victim loses their hard-earned money. Usually, scammers in many cases pose as company officials to steal your sensitive information and misuse it. <br /><br />In one such recent incident, a 44-year-old woman from <keyword id="19895934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="noida" source="keywords">Noida</keyword> recently fell victim to an <keyword id="20971199" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="esim-scam" source="Orion">eSIM scam</keyword>, losing ₹27 lakh and becoming the target of fraudulent loan activity. The scam involved the manipulation of her <keyword id="19909735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sim" source="keywords">SIM</keyword> card and banking details, which allowed the fraudster to siphon off her funds and take out a loan in her name.<br /><br /><h2>What exactly happened</h2><br />According to an HT report, <keyword id="23110017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyotsana-bhatia" source="keywords">Jyotsana Bhatia</keyword>, a resident of Sector 82 in Noida, works at a private company and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station in Sector 36.<br /><br />On August 31, Bhatia received a WhatsApp call from a person posing as a customer care executive from her telecom provider. The caller explained that her SIM card could be converted to an embedded SIM (eSIM), which is a digital version of a physical SIM card and can be helpful in case of phone loss.<br /><br />The suspect offered to help Bhatia activate the eSIM feature, instructing her to select the option in her mobile carrier’s application and enter a verification code that was sent to her phone. Bhatia, unaware of the fraud, followed the steps as instructed. Unfortunately, as soon as she entered the code, her physical SIM card was deactivated.<br /><br />The suspect assured her that a new SIM card would be delivered by September 1, leaving her temporarily without access to her mobile number. When the promised SIM card failed to arrive, Bhatia contacted the telecom provider’s customer care service and was advised to visit the service centre to get a replacement. After three days, on September 3, she was issued a new SIM card.<br /><br />However, by then, the damage had already been done. Bhatia started receiving messages from her bank, revealing that the fraudster had accessed her mobile banking account using her deactivated phone number. By changing the associated email ID, the suspect was able to bypass security checks and transfer large sums of money from her accounts. The fraudster also broke her fixed deposit, siphoned money from two bank accounts, and even took out a loan of ₹7.40 lakh in her name.<br /><br />Bhatia reported that the total amount stolen in multiple transactions amounted to ₹27 lakh. Shocked by the breach, she immediately filed an FIR with the cybercrime unit. The police registered the case under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as under relevant sections of the IT Act. Efforts to track down the suspect are currently underway.<br /><br /><h2>Understanding eSIM and its risks<br /></h2><br />An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of a SIM card that is built into a device and does not require a physical card. While this technology is convenient and allows users to switch networks or plans without handling a physical card, it also opens the door to new forms of fraud. Scammers can manipulate eSIM features to deactivate a user’s existing SIM card and take control of their phone number, which is linked to various accounts and services.<br /><br />In this case, the fraudster exploited the victim’s trust by posing as a telecom customer care executive, taking advantage of her lack of knowledge about the risks associated with eSIM activation. Once the fraudster gained control of her phone number, they accessed her bank accounts through mobile banking applications that rely on the phone number for authentication.<br /> <br />By changing the email ID linked to her account, they prevented the victim from receiving security alerts and were able to make unauthorised transactions without her knowledge.<br />
