<ul class="summary-list"><li>Gut health is a buzzy topic right now. </li><li>Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a gastroenterologist, shared three signs of an unhealthy gut with Business Insider.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gut-healthy-lunch-recipe-gastroenterologist-2024-2">Gut health</a> is a buzzy topic, with the digestive health supplement market projected to grow by 8.68% each year to reach $21.41 billion by 2030.</p><p>And with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-risks-young-people-reduce-diet-alcohol-2024-2">rate of colorectal cancer cases in under 50s</a> increasing, maintaining good gut health is more important than ever. But there's no miracle pill to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-improve-longevity-supplements-vs-exercise-and-diet-2024-3">improve gut health</a>, despite what the greens powder or probiotic supplement brands might have you think.</p><p>The kitchen can, however, be one gateway to good gut health, according to Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a gastroenterologist and the US Medical Director of the nutrition company ZOE.</p><p>He told Business Insider the three potential signs of an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-to-kickstart-a-healthy-gut">unhealthy gut</a> and three approaches that could fix it.</p><h2>3 signs of an unhealthy gut</h2><h3>Bloating</h3><p>"I don't mean a little bit of bloating, I mean chronic issues with it," Bulsiewicz said. "That is indicative of your gut struggling to process and digest your food."</p><p>People often misinterpret <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-to-get-rid-of-bloating">bloating as an intolerance</a> to certain foods and so cut them out. But Bulsiewicz said often it's actually a sign a person needs to eat <em>more</em> of those foods, such as beans and lentils, because it could suggest the gut isn't used to digesting them.</p><h3>Poop that' aren't "Bristol 4"</h3><p>Bulsiewicz said that poops are mostly microbes, so "the state of your poop gives you some insight into what's happening with those gut bugs."</p><p>If yours doesn't fit the criteria for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-poop-constipation-pelvic-floor-health-fiber-2023-10">healthy poop</a> — a soft, snake-like stool, otherwise known as number four on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-solve-bowel-poop-problems-fiber-posture-science-2020-8">Bristol stool chart</a> — it might be "indicative of a microbiome that's unhappy and unsettled," he said.</p><p>When a person heals their gut, Bulsiewicz said their stool tends to move back toward the middle of the chart, rather than being liquid or solid pellets.</p><h3>Lacking energy</h3><p>Gut health is connected to the functioning of all the different systems in the body, so having an unhealthy gut can contribute to other health issues, such as autoimmune conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis, which lead to a lack of energy.</p><p>"When you change your diet to something which empowers your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-5-healthy-foods-for-your-gut-garlic-onions-leeks-2023-7">gut microbes</a>, your energy levels can improve very quickly and your sleep improves," if you have an autoimmune condition or chronic inflammation, Bulsiewicz said.</p><h2>3 ways to heal your gut</h2><h3>Focus on fiber</h3><p>"Fiber is the food that feeds gut microbes. It's their preferred food and energizes them. Fiber comes from plant-based foods, so fruits and vegetables but also whole grains, seeds, nuts and legumes," Bulsiewicz said.</p><p>BI previously reported on Bulsiewicz's F-GOALS method that he uses to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foods-for-gut-health-fgoals-gastroenterologist-2024-1">incorporate fiber</a> into his diet, which includes <strong>G</strong>reens, <strong>O</strong>mega-3, and <strong>S</strong>eaweed.</p><h3>Eat a varied diet</h3><p>Bulsiewicz says to eat <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boost-improve-gut-health-simple-effective-methods-2024-1">30 plants a week</a>, whether that's fruits, vegetables, spices, or coffee. 30 isn't "some magical threshold," he said, but it's a helpful way to think about maximizing the variety of foods, nutrients, and fiber in your diet.</p><p>Trying new foods at restaurants is another good way to add more variety to your diet, he said.</p><h3>Eat fermented foods</h3><p>"By increasing our fermented food intake, we can enhance the health of our microbiome and reduce inflammation," Bulsiewicz said, because such foods have been associated with a more diverse gut microbiome.</p><p>Fermented foods include pickles, kombucha, kimchi — and even dark chocolate, he said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Z Tiktok users say they are finally tossing their e-cigarettes. </li><li>Despite the large body of evidence that vaping is bad for your health, Gen Z wasn't moved. </li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stuffed-snoopy-puffer-jacket-cvs-stores-peanuts-gen-z-fandom-2023-11">The personal health concerns of vaping may not move Gen Z</a>, but when it comes to showing solidarity with the people of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/photos-terrible-conditions-cobalt-mining-industry-to-meet-battery-demands-2023-2?_gl=1*qap7o9*_ga*NTExMzU3MzY2LjE2OTM2MTI2OTk.*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcwMTY1MTEwMC44OTguMS4xNzAxNjUxMTU0LjYuMC4w">Democratic Republic of the Congo</a>, tossing their e-cigarettes is easy.</p><p>On TikTok, young users are posting videos dunking their vapes in water or vowing never to touch them again because of the devices' connections to cobalt mining in the DRC, which has been condemned for years by human rights groups.</p><p>Cobalt is used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries that power much of the world's electronics. Major vape brands like <a target="_blank" href="https://support.juul.ie/s/article/What-kind-of-battery-is-in-the-device-Ireland">Juul</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vaporesso.com/blog/vape-batteries-and-battery-safety">Vaporesso</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2022-07-15/rise-of-single-use-vapes-sending-tonnes-of-lithium-to-landfill">Elf Bar</a> use lithium-ion batteries, as do many other companies and products, from laptops to cellphones. </p><p>One of the most viewed videos comes from user itskristinamf, a 25-year-old who said she no longer felt "comfortable" about vaping after learning about the horrific abuses that <a target="_blank" href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/lifestyle/disturbing-human-rights-abuses-unearthed-in-the-wake-of-congos-mining-boom/slgvgn8">Congolese miners</a> and children face obtaining cobalt.</p><p>Kristina, whose video has been viewed 1.8 million times, said her disposable vape was the only thing she bought often enough to be an issue. In the US, <a target="_blank" href="https://pirg.org/resources/vape-waste-the-environmental-harms-of-disposable-vapes/">4.5 disposable vapes</a> are thrown out each second.</p> <p>Kristina told Business Insider that she began vaping a few years ago to kick her cigarette habit. Before she quit, she would grab her vape first thing in the morning. At one point, her vape became a part of her internet personality. But Congo made her quit.</p><p>"I didn't want to but I started looking into what was being made in the vapes… and I started getting this guilt," she said. "If I do want to help, and I want to be about what I talk about, I got to put this vape down."</p><p>Others followed suit, with hundreds of commenters and content creators declaring they would put down their vapes in solidarity.</p><h2>One video becomes a movement</h2><p>Afia, a 23-year-old New Yorker and content creator on TikTok who goes by the username gennasaiquoi, told Business Insider she had also seen Kristina's video and became inspired to quit vaping.</p><p>She had been vaping since 2017 and has been trying to quit on and off again for years. Despite being aware of the "serious" <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vaping-teens-young-adults-more-likely-to-get-coronavirus-2020-8#:~:text=Growing%20evidence%20shows%20that%20regular,Insider's%20homepage%20for%20more%20stories.">health problems</a> that could result from long-nicotine usage, her efforts were met with little success.</p><p>"I would look back and think to myself, 'what is going to make me quit'… and I finally found my answer," Afia said. <br /><br />Afia posted a video on TikTok in mid-November explaining her decision to quit and saying "never again" to vaping.</p><p>It's been over two weeks since she posted her video, but Afia told Business Insider she's going strong. When she gets a nicotine craving, she said it helps to remind herself that she's "not going to be supporting genocide."</p><p>It's not just Gen Z who is participating. Chris, a 27-year-old millennial, posted a video of them tossing their full vape into the trash. They told Business Insider that they were compelled to quit vaping partially because they are African American, and "in some way, shape, or form, that's my family."</p><p>Making a TikTok, Chris said, was "small compared to what those people are sacrificing" but they hoped it would help spread awareness about the issue.</p> <p>"I've always been silenced by family and authority, and I want to be able to use my voice in a positive way," Chris said. "I'm noticing that people care about my voice on TikTok, and if I can make any type of change, I want to."</p><p>Zoe Floyd, a 22-year-old former vaper, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@kissuonurforehead/video/7302093444699180330">took action</a> to show solidarity with people in Congo.</p><p>"I like to think that it is <a target="_blank" href="https://valariekaur.com/about-the-revolutionary-love-project/">revolutionary love</a>…Why are we quitting for other people? We won't even quit for ourselves," Floyd told Business Insider.</p><p>TikTok creators told Business Insider that the resurgence in interest surrounding Congo comes around the time when young activists are speaking out against the Israeli military siege in Gaza, which has resulted in mass civilian deaths and human rights abuses. The conversation about Israel-Palestine prompted users on social media to bring attention to social justice issues all over the world — from Haiti to Yemen.</p><p>"My generation, the younger generations, we aren't like the boomers," Afia told Business Insider. "We have that empathy chip inside of us, where if we see human suffering, we know that. And if we have a way to stop it by using our voices, we're going to do that."</p><h2>The most abundant source of cobalt</h2><p>Congo is the world's most <a target="_blank" href="https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/can-democratic-republic-congos-mineral-resources-provide-pathway-peace">abundant source</a> of cobalt. World governments, including the US and China, are turning to the African nation to power their transition from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/AFR62/7009/2023/en/"><u>fossil fuels.</u></a></p><p>However, the mining comes at a steep cost and is tied to conflict and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iom.int/news/record-high-displacement-drc-nearly-7-million"><u>mass displacement</u></a> in the region. The practice of mining itself for as low as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/nov/08/cobalt-drc-miners-toil-for-30p-an-hour-to-fuel-electric-cars">35 cents an hour</a> is hazardous, and miners frequently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-google-tech-congo-child-labor-lawsuit-2019-12">die</a> on the job. Workers often dig through the mines with crude tools, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2023/02/01/1152893248/red-cobalt-congo-drc-mining-siddharth-kara">lack safety equipment</a>, and are exposed to cobalt, which is harmful to breathe and touch. Exposure has been linked to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2019/dec/18/how-the-race-for-cobalt-risks-turning-it-from-miracle-metal-to-deadly-chemical">lung disease and heart failure</a>.</p><div type="image" title="A person in a shirt covered in dust holds up a brown and green stone" height="1666" width="2500" msid="105882411" hostid="261"></div><p>Child labor is also a massive problem in these mines, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/ILAB/child_labor_reports/tda2021/2022-TVPRA-List-of-Goods-v3.pdf"><u>US Department of Labor</u></a> report. Children miss school to collect cobalt and can be trafficked along with their families into working at these mines, per the report, and if their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/over-400-dead-southern-congo-after-heavy-floods-and-mudslides-2023-5?_gl=1*qap7o9*_ga*NTExMzU3MzY2LjE2OTM2MTI2OTk.*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcwMTY1MTEwMC44OTguMS4xNzAxNjUxMTU0LjYuMC4w">parents die</a>, children are "orphaned with no option but to continue working."</p><h2>'Unwitting participants in this violence'</h2><p>Afia said the ultimate goal of the boycott is to put pressure on the multibillion-dollar vape industry that relies on these minerals to power its products. And if those quitters stay away from vapes, it could impact the market permanently.</p><p>In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 2.13 million middle and high school students in the US had used a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/about-e-cigarettes.html">vaping product</a> in the last month. Another <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db475.htm">report</a> from the CDC found that in 2021, about 11% of adults 18-24 years old vaped.<br /><br />Siddharth Kara, author of "Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives," told Business Insider that he applauds anyone using their voice for Congo.<br /><br />"I think what's happening is a lot of people feel angry that they've been made unwitting participants in this violence," Kara said. "Companies that sell us rechargeable things all proclaim their supply chains are clean and untainted and free of child labor and other abuses. And it's just not true."</p><div type="image" title="Hundreds of people carrying bags filled with cobalt and covered in orange dust" height="1668" width="2500" msid="105882412" hostid="261"></div><p>Christoph Vogel, author of "Conflict Minerals, Inc.: War, Profit and White Saviourism in Eastern Congo," however, cautioned that online Western movements run the risk of simplifying and dominating the conversation about Congo instead of centering Congolese voices.</p><p>Through his research, he's found that previous pushes in the 2000s from companies to sell "conflict-free" minerals from<a target="_blank" href="https://www.dissentmagazine.org/online_articles/the-problem-with-conflict-minerals/"> Congo </a>resulted in more violence in the region — partly because there was a lack of consultation with Congolese activists and residents.<br /><br />Vogel said to avoid what writer Teju Cole calls the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/03/the-white-savior-industrial-complex/254843/">"White Savior Industrial Complex,"</a> people should pay attention to who is benefiting from their actions, and if you also stand to benefit, be extra critical of your choices. Vogel also encouraged people participating in these boycotts to research the connections between vapes and cobalt.<br /><br />"Ask questions, be critical, don't believe the easy pitches," Vogel told Business Insider.</p>

The Anheuser Busch-owned brand ran a 60-second ad that takes advantage of a sensation called autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) that has become a big trend on YouTube. ASMR videos use soft sounds like whispering or touching to trigger a tingling feeling in some people.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hbo-hijacked-budweisers-super-bowl-ad-and-caught-viewers-off-guard-2019-2">HBO used Game of Thrones to hijack Bud Light's Super Bowl ad, but it may not have had the impact it expected</a></em></p><p>While ASMR is<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/videos-designed-to-trigger-asmr-are-surging-in-popularity-2017-11"> a big trend online,</a> it's not mainstream, but Michelob Ultra hopes that it will become mainstream by bringing it to the Super Bowl.</p><p>Actress Zoe Kravitz stars in the ad that promotes Pure Gold beer from ad agency FCB Chicago. In the spot, Kravitz taps a beer bottle softly and whispers into a microphone. The 60-second ad was posted to YouTube on Jan. 28 and has racked up nearly 13 million views since.</p><p>After the ad ran, Twitter exploded with tweets about the ad, most of which were negative, according to social media analytic firm Brandwatch.</p><p>Since 6 p.m. Eastern time, Michelob Ultra was mentioned 4,200 times and more than 54% of the tweets were negative, according to the firm. Millions of Americans just learned what ASMR is from Michelob Ultra's Super Bowl commercial - but they aren't loving it

Let's get you straight to the good stuff.</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-are-quitting-ad-industry-and-agencies-struggle-to-hire-2021-7">Ad industry's labor shortage</a></li><li>Adtech's deal flurry</li><li>TikTok on its Euro 2020 sponsorship</li></ul><h3>Leaving on a jet plane</h3><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-are-quitting-ad-industry-and-agencies-struggle-to-hire-2021-7"></a></p><p>Much like their fellow executives in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-prices-labor-shortage-worker-wages-food-2021-6">hospitality</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investment-banks-labor-shortage-analysts-hiring-deals-goldman-jpmorgan-2021-6">banking</a>, and the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/20/business/american-airlines-flights-canceled-labor-shortages/index.html">airline sector</a>, ad-agency bosses are grappling with labor shortages.</p><p>As my colleagues Lindsay Rittenhouse and Patrick Coffee reported, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-are-quitting-ad-industry-and-agencies-struggle-to-hire-2021-7">ad-agency workers are abandoning ship in droves</a>, with many citing burnout or a desire for more flexible working.</p><p>The return to the office is now likely to serve as another pressure point - and for some, close proximity to certain coworkers or clients presents a grim prospect.</p><p>Earlier this week, Zoe Scaman, the founder of the London-based strategy studio Bodacious, lit a fire under Adland with her <a href="https://zoescaman.substack.com/p/mad-men-furious-women">essay "Mad Men. Furious Women,"</a> which put the industry on blast for not doing enough to stamp out misogyny and harassment.</p><p>Indeed, <a href="https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/lets-stamp-sexual-harassment-adland-office-working-returns/1721395">a 2020 survey from the UK ad-industry nonprofit TimeTo</a>, found that 49% of agency staffers polled were concerned sexual harassment would be a bigger issue once back in the office, with some fearing a release of untoward "pent up" feelings.</p><p>All in all, not a great advertisement for agencies desperately trying to recruit new talent - and just as the workload from clients has begun to rebound.</p><p>Cindy Gallop, the entrepreneur, consultant, and former ad exec, told me there were some practical steps agency leaders should be taking to address these issues and prevent more workers from tapping out of advertising altogether:</p><ol><li>Fire every white male sexual harasser and sexist bully currently in power.</li><li>Promote women into those leadership roles instead.</li><li>Stand back and let women lead, design, and manage the future of the industry.</li></ol><p>"I guarantee those steps will not only stop people leaving the industry, but, when the industry is led, designed, and managed by women - i.e., the primary advertising target - have talent flooding into advertising instead," Gallop said.</p><p><strong>Related reading:</strong> Ad Age's Jeanine Poggi takes an in-depth look at how ad agencies are <a href="https://adage.com/measuring-ad-agencies-diversity-promises-commitment-george-floyd/2347111">living up to the diversity promises they made last summer</a> - and where they're falling short.</p><h3><strong>Merger, she wrote</strong></h3><p>In a stark reversal to the past few <a href="https://digiday.com/media/nuclear-winter-ad-tech-enters-vulture-capital-era/">wilderness years</a>, you're now the exception to the rule if you're an adtech company of a certain vintage that isn't public or filing to go public. The latest to join the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-ad-tech-stocks-soaring-ipo-returning">ever-bulging adtech IPO list</a> is the Altice-owned video-ad specialist Teads, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/altices-ad-tech-company-teads-plans-to-file-for-ipo-11625604384">which filed on Tuesday</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adtech-company-openx-explores-possible-sale-2021-5">adtech M&amp;A is going gangbusters</a>.</p><p>"Just about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brands-acquiring-tech-firms-to-keep-up-with-ecommerce-and-ad-changes">every adtech company is in play</a>, and if not, they should be," Nick MacShane, the senior managing director at Progress Partners, told me. (Which is exactly what I'd be saying if I were an adtech banker, too.)</p><p><a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/digital-ad-opportunities-and-capital-spur-investor-interest-in-ad-tech-11625220000">The Wall Street Journal's Alexandra Bruell reported last week on why adtech had come back in vogue</a>. The tl;dr version: Digital ad spending is up, public adtech company valuations are higher, interest rates are low, and there's a growing appetite for adtech in new areas like streaming TV and e-commerce.</p><p>(I'd also throw in another reason some companies are looking for a quick exit, from the JEGI Clarity managing director Hugh Boston: "In the States, certainly for some types of businesses that are founder-owned, there's a concern that capital gains tax could go up, effective next year.")</p><p>What does it all mean for advertisers? Probably a bunch of new vendor names and logos to learn for one (<a href="https://jamesnames.com/2021/07/after-acquiring-mountain-com-mntn-also-acquires-mntn-com/">MNTN</a>, anyone?) But also, hopefully, it means more of those vendors will have the money and scale required to throw resources at some of the industry's biggest challenges - particularly around data privacy. At least before the founders cash out and sail into the sunset on an <a href="https://digiday.com/marketing/cannes-briefing-battle-ad-tech-yachts/">adtech flotilla</a>, that is. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider surveyed 1,000 people to figure out how well certain influencers are known and liked.</li><li>Data revealed which personalities had high unfavorability rankings.</li><li>Controversial YouTuber-cum-boxer <keyword id="6130340" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jake-Paul">Jake Paul</keyword> topped the list, with his brother Logan in second. </li></ul><p>In the digital influencer world, courting controversy can be an effective business strategy. Some of YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram's biggest names have risen to fame by building their platforms on scandal; in the case of some online personalities like Jake Paul (more on him later) <a href="https://www.insider.com/cancel-culture-youtube-actually-help-a-youtubers-career-2020-12">cancelation actually serves to prolong their career.</a></p><p>Insider polled 1,040 people to <keyword id="15510" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Survey">survey</keyword> their feelings and level of familiarity with over 60 of social media's biggest names, with participants marking whether or not they knew a particular influencer or <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> and whether their opinion of them was favorable or unfavorable. This included household names like Jake and <keyword id="2199400" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Logan-Paul">Logan Paul</keyword>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4">YouTube "supervillains"</a> like <keyword id="9321228" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="onision">Onision</keyword>, and personalities who incorporated controversy into their brand like Instagram influencer and writer Caroline Calloway. We then looked at what percentage of people who knew about an influencer had an unfavorable opinion of them. </p><p>The data reveals influencers who, while known to the general public at varying levels, ranked highest among those whom survey participants had a negative opinion.</p><h2>10. Tana Mongeau</h2><div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004838" hostid="261"></div><p>Tana Mongeau had become one of YouTube's biggest stars by the time she hit 21 years old, mixing work online with traditional celebrity. <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtuber-tana-mongeau-interview-paris-hilton-gen-z-playlist-live-2020-3">Insider's Kat Tenbarge called her "Gen Z's Paris Hilton,"</a> and amid <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-new-details-season-2-no-filter-mtv-special-2019-12">reality shows</a> and vlogs, she's well-known in online circles. Still, she's been dogged by her fair share of controversy, from her <a href="https://www.inverse.com/article/46651-tanacon-is-the-latest-real-life-consequence-of-the-streaming-economy">disastrous 2018 TanaCon</a>, to a <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtubers-tana-mongeau-and-jake-paul-have-broken-up-2020-1#:~:text=The%20YouTube%20stars%20Tana%20Mongeau,they%20are%20taking%20a%20break.">brief marriage to controversial Youtuber Jake Paul</a>, to <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-responds-to-accusations-of-racism-and-ignorance-2020-6">racist comments that she made in the past</a>. </p><p>Out of those surveyed, 12.1% knew Tana Mongeau. 46% had an unfavorable opinion of her and 18.3% had a positive one. </p><h2>9. Keemstar</h2><div type="image" title="Keemstar" height="475" width="635" msid="81004841" hostid="261"></div><p>Daniel "Keemstar" Keem, was a pioneer of the YouTube drama channel, breaking down influencer shenanigans with the tabloid scrutiny afforded to mainstream celebrities. Since launching his famous DramaAlert channel in 2014, he's become a controversial figure in the community with a brand that, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/youtuber-keemstar-being-half-loved-half-hated-whats-coming-next-1494539">as he told reporter Steven Asarch at Newsweek in 2020</a>, leaves him "half-loved and half-hated by design." In 2020, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/g-fuel-ends-keemstar-sponsorship-h3h3-ethan-klein-etika-2020-5">his sponsorship with energy drink company G Fuel ended</a> (with Keem saying that he "walked away") following a video from h3h3Productions' Ethan Klein that raised claims that Keem had exploited Etika, a YouTuber who died by suicide in 2019.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 9.3% were aware of who Keemstar was and 47.4% had an unfavorable opinion of him, with 24.7% skewing favorable.</p><h2>8. Caroline Calloway</h2><div type="image" title="caroline calloway essay" height="494" width="659" msid="81004843" hostid="261"></div><p>Caroline Calloway rose as a controversial influencer figure in 2019, garnering mainstream media coverage across the board. An <a href="https://www.instagram.com/carolinecalloway/">Instagram influencer</a> who currently has 678,000 followers on the platform, has turned the accusations that she's a scam artist into a personal brand <a href="https://www.insider.com/caroline-calloway-book-deal-instagram-career-2019-1#the-workshop-series-fell-apart-7">after a workshop she planned went awry in 2019.</a> Later, her former ghostwriter <a href="https://www.thecut.com/2019/09/the-story-of-caroline-calloway-and-her-ghostwriter-natalie.html">authored a story for The Cut</a> about how she used to help Calloway write the stories that appeared on her Instagram.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 3.2% knew Calloway, a surprise given the widespread <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/style/caroline-calloway-explainer.html">mainstream</a> <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-messiness-and-meaning-of-caroline-calloway/2019/09/13/7c84b4fe-d56c-11e9-9343-40db57cf6abd_story.html">media</a> <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/09/i-get-caroline-calloway/598918/">attention</a> that she's received in the past. 48.5% had an unfavorable opinion of her, while 36.4% had a favorable opinion.</p><h2>7. Zoe LaVerne</h2><div type="image" title="Zoe Laverne visits the Young Hollywood Studio on February 7, 2020 in Los Angeles, California." height="3648" width="4864" msid="81004847" hostid="261"></div><p>19-year-old Zoe LaVerne, a TikToker with over 17.5 million followers, has been <a href="https://www.insider.com/zoe-laverne-kiss-13-age-connor-joyce-how-old-fake-arrest-2020">embroiled in controversy for much of her career</a>. In late 2020, a leaked video appeared to show her kissing a 13-year-old fan that LaVerne said she had "caught feelings" for. Prior to that, she had indefinitely split from her ex-boyfriend Cody Orlove amid abuse allegations and also been called out for making disparaging comments about Charli D'Amelio, TikTok's most-followed creator. In November 2020, she said that she was seeking mental health treatment and took a brief hiatus online, but has since resumed posting.</p><p>Out of those surveyed, 5.8% knew LaVerne, with 55.7% responding that they had an unfavorable opinion of her and 27.9% skewing favorable.</p><h2>6. Jeffree Star</h2><div type="image" title="Jeffree Star" height="593" width="791" msid="81004855" hostid="261"></div><p>Jeffree Star is one of the oldest - and biggest - figures in the beauty YouTube community, building a beauty empire with his company Jeffree Star Cosmetics. He's also one of its most contentious. In 2020, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-sexual-assault-allegations-violence-accused-predator-myspace-payments-2020-9">Insider's Kat Tenbarge investigated claims of sexual assault against Star,</a> with <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-sexual-assault-claims-hush-money-insider-investigation-2020-12">documents appearing to show</a> that a Jeffree Star Cosmetics executive had paid one of Star's accusers $45,000 in a hush-money payment. </p><p>Star's tenure as an influencer was reflected in his numbers, with 22.5% of survey respondents knowing who he was. However, his controversies also shone through: 55.7% had an unfavorable opinion of him, while 19.6% had a favorable one.</p><h2>5. Jacob Sartorius</h2><div type="image" title="jacob sartorius milan fashion week" height="4480" width="5973" msid="81004863" hostid="261"></div><p>It's a bit baffling that Jacob Sartorius, the 18-year-old star who rose to fame on Musical.ly in the latter half of the 2010s, is on this list in between Jeffree Star and Onision. Still, even back in 2016 when Sartorius was 13 years old, <a href="https://www.insider.com/who-is-jacob-sartorius-2016-8">one teen told Insider that "everybody either loves him or hates him."</a> Since then, Sartorius has continued making music and <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-relationships-dating-celebrities-david-dobrik-addison-rae-daisy-keech-2020-4#former-musically-star-jacob-sartorius-once-had-an-on-again-off-again-relationship-with-stranger-things-star-millie-bobby-brown-4">was in an on-again, off-again relationship with "Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown</a>. </p><p>Out of those surveyed, 10.1% knew who Jacob Sartorius was. 57.1% had an unfavorable opinion of him while 11.4% had a favorable one.</p><h2>4. Onision</h2><div type="image" title="Onision" height="748" width="998" msid="81004870" hostid="261"></div><p>Onision, a YouTuber who got his start in 2007 and whose real name is James "Greg" Jackson, was a popular creator who <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH5ay10RTGY">went viral for his "Banana Song" in 2009.</a> However, his fall from grace, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-youtube-supervillain-are-made-onision-amberlynn-reid-2020-4">as Insider's Lindsay Dodgson reported</a>, was one of the most intense in YouTube history. In 2019, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/26/20984785/onision-doxxing-patreon-deplatformed-twitter-youtube">six women accused him of harassment and emotional abuse</a> and he was banned from Patreon; most recently, he was removed from YouTube's partner program, meaning that his videos will no longer be monetized. He's <a href="https://mashable.com/article/onision-in-real-life-documentary-controversy-explained/?europe=true">previously disputed abuse allegations.</a></p><p>While only 6.8% of survey respondents knew who Onision was, he was in the top five of most unfavorable influencers for which Insider surveyed opinion. 59.2% had an unfavorable opinion of him, and 23.9% found him to be favorable.</p><h2>3. <keyword id="8299810" type="AGENCY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trisha-paytas">Trisha Paytas</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="trisha paytas instagram account deactivated" height="1560" width="2080" msid="81004874" hostid="261"></div><p>Trisha Paytas has been an internet mainstay since the late 2000s, when she got her start on YouTube and furthered her fame through appearances on programs like <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-degeneres-show-trisha-paytas-video-appearanace-speed-reading-2021-1">"The Ellen DeGeneres Show"</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/trisha-paytas-americas-got-talent-agt-fake-staged-video-sabotaged-2021-1">"America's Got Talent."</a> A big name on both YouTube and TikTok, <a href="https://www.insider.com/life-and-controversies-of-youtuber-trisha-paytas-2019-8">she's been involved in numerous public feuds over the course of her career</a> and is known for sharing details about her personal life on YouTube.</p><p>An undeniable fixture of the influencer landscape, 11.3% of survey respondents knew who Paytas was. 66.1% had an unfavorable opinion of her, with 15.3% saying that they held her in a favorable light.</p><h2>2. Logan Paul</h2><div type="image" title="Logan Paul" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004878" hostid="261"></div><p>Logan Paul ascended to online fame in 2013 when he and his brother Jake Paul began posting to short-form video app Vine, later moving onto YouTube after Vine shut down. Known for wild stunt videos, he's a controversial online personality, <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtube-star-logan-paul-apologised-after-filming-a-dead-body-in-japans-suicide-forest-2018-1">due in large part to a January 2018 video that showed Paul filming what appeared to be a dead body in Japan's Aokigahara forest</a>. That video drew widespread backlash, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/logan-paul-podcast-controversies-drama-reputation-jake-2020-12">as Insider's Lindsay Dodgson reported</a>, he's managed to orchestrate a redemption arc of sorts over the past several years and is generally considered to have a better reputation than his brother, Jake, a notion also reflected in Insider's data.</p><p>Logan Paul is the most well-known influencer on this list, with 30.6% of respondents saying that they knew who he was and putting him close to other big-name internet personalities like Joe Rogan, who was known by 37.2% of those surveyed. However, 68% had an unfavorable opinion of him, with 13.5% still holding a favorable one.</p><h2>1. Jake Paul</h2><div type="image" title="Jake Paul" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81004882" hostid="261"></div><p>Controversy has propelled the younger Paul brother, Jake, to greater and greater heights of fame since he and his brother became internet famous in the 2010s. Booted from the Disney Channel show "Bizaardvark" in 2017 <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/07/19/538103866/youtube-star-jake-pauls-neighbors-tell-him-were-not-jake-paulers">after his West Hollywood neighbors said that he had turned the street into a "war zone." </a> He's been <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-controversies-timeline-looting-scandals-racist-slurs-drama-2020-6">accused of scamming his young followers more than once</a>, come under fire for using slurs, and posting videos some said were inappropriate for his young audience. </p><p>Most recently, he was charged with trespassing in Arizona after footage of him at a mall where looting and vandalism were occurring circulated online; he's also thrown parties at his home in Calabasas, CA during the COVID-19 pandemic and <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-gun-fbi-search-video-la-police-firearms-mansion-2020-8">law enforcement seized what seemed to be large guns from his home during an August FBI raid</a>. Later in 2020, he <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/youtuber-jake-paul-believes-covid-is-a-hoaxand-i-am-fake-news">told The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern</a> that he thought that COVD-19 was a "hoax." He's <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-is-far-more-suited-to-boxing-than-youtube-2020-12">currently pursuing a boxing career.</a></p><p>Paul was the most-disliked influencer that Insider polled opinions of and was known by 29.5% of respondents. 71.4% had an unfavorable opinion of him, while 12.7% had a favorable one.</p><p><em>SurveyMonkey Audience polls from a national sample balanced by census data of age and gender. Respondents are incentivized to complete surveys through charitable contributions. Generally speaking, digital polling tends to skew toward people with access to the internet. SurveyMonkey Audience doesn't try to weight its sample based on race or income. Polling data collected 1,040 respondents December 24, 2020 with a 3 percentage point margin of error.</em></p>

Insider poll shows some of the most disliked influencers on the internet, from Jake Paul to Jeffree Star

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Freelance writer Zoe Rosenberg has struggled with getting a good night's <keyword id="6372996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sleep">sleep</keyword> for years.</li><li>She decided to download Sleep by <keyword id="2663837" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Headspace">Headspace</keyword>, which costs $69.99 a year.</li><li>She liked the wind-down and mid-night exercises, which helped her get to sleep after waking up.</li></ul><p>I don't remember when it started, but somewhere along the way, I became bad at sleeping. This was way before the pandemic made sleep practically impossible.</p><p>I would wake up after one or two hours, mind gripped by <keyword id="15418" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="anxiety">anxiety</keyword> or, lately, simply replaying the lyrics to '<a href="https://www.insider.com/taylor-swift-folklore-review-tracklist-breakdown-2020-7">Folklore</a>.' Unable to quiet my thoughts, I'd stay up and eventually succumb to the warm glow of my phone before falling back to sleep when many people started their day.</p><p>More than once, my early-rising partner and I passed like ships in a sea of consciousness - he getting ready to begin his day as I tried to will myself off to dreamland once more.</p><p>The thing about sleep is that being bad at it isn't really an option. It <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/sleep-deprivation/effects-on-body#Causes-of-sleep-deprivation">affects</a> your mood, your ability to function normally, your productivity, and your will.</p><p>In short, when you're not sleeping well, you're not doing much well.</p><p>And with the demands that American society places on the individual, prizing productivity over rest - among many other factors that cause stress and anxiety - getting a good night's sleep is becoming harder and harder.</p><p>The rise of the sleep industry reflects this trend. A report by market data site <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1119471/size-of-the-sleep-economy-worldwide/#statisticContainer">Statistia</a> says that the global sleep economy was valued at $432 billion in 2019 and is forecasted to be worth $585 billion by 2024.</p><p>I've tried <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-sleep-mask">sleep masks</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-ear-plugs-and-sleep-mask-2016-7">ear plugs</a>, hypnotherapy, natural supplements, and stretching before bed. While all have their merits, none was ever a golden ticket to the land of Nod.</p><p>Which is why I finally gave <a href="https://www.headspace.com/">Headspace</a> a shot. At $69.99 for the year, I rationed that my increased productivity as a freelancer would quickly make up for the app's cost.</p><p>At that cost, I got full access to all of Headspace's guided meditations and mindfulness techniques to help build a daily practice. The brand also offers a free version of its basic meditations, but it's far less extensive than the paid version.</p><div type="image" title="The Headspace app" height="3464" width="1716" msid="83524004" hostid="261"></div><p>The mindfulness and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-meditation-apps ">meditation app</a> is a spinoff from a live-event company of the same mission developed by Buddhist monk Andy Puddicombe and Rich Pierson in 2010.</p><p>A Series A funding round in September 2015 pulled in $34 million, with celebrity angel investors including the likes of Jessica Alba, Cash Warren, Jared Leto, Ryan Seacrest, and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner.</p><p>In 2018, Sleep by Headspace debuted with guided meditations, sleepcasts, ambient and nature sounds, and breathing exercises to help lull users into a deep state of rest. More than 70 million people in 190 countries now use the app to improve their sleep, health, and happiness.</p><h2><strong>I tried it out every day for a month.</strong></h2><p>When you open the Sleep tab on the app, the program's sunny-white and orange layout takes on soothing black, blue, and purple hues.</p><p>Sleep is a choose-your-own-adventure series, with meditations to wind down the mind, one-off stories to soothe you into rest, guided-breathing techniques to enhance relaxation, and ambient noise and nature sounds to drown out thoughts (or a snoring partner).</p><h2><strong>I had particularly good luck lulling to sleep with wind downs.</strong></h2><p>These are short three- to 10-minute <keyword id="6388212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="meditation">meditation</keyword> and breathing exercises that help prepare the mind for rest. Wind downs include deep-breathing exercises and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjI9v-VYwZY">noting</a>, a technique where you gently acknowledge the mind has wandered off while meditating.</p><div type="image" title="Headspace wind down screen" height="3464" width="1716" msid="83524011" hostid="261"></div><p>There are seven wind downs on Sleep's main menu. I wish there were more.</p><p>The stories, called sleepcasts, run 45 minutes long with ambient background sounds that are meant to send the user off to sleep. The option to toggle between making the narrator louder or ambient noise louder may be helpful to some.</p><p>On most nights, I listened to a sleepcast, such as "Rainday Antiques," a walk through a small antique store as rain patters on the roof, or "Botanical Building," a stroll through a botanical garden.</p><p>Some tracks I found distracting, like "Cabin Porch," which featured bird sounds that my mind equates more with waking up. With most sleepcasts, though, I'd nod off before the end of the track. But that didn't mean I'd always stay asleep.</p><h2><strong>For the mid-night wakers like myself, Sleep by Headspace features a nighttime SOS section.</strong></h2><p>This includes pointed meditations for recovering from a nightmare, dissolving work stress, calming mental chatter, reframing physical pain, and slowing down a racing mind.</p><p>One method it uses is breathing techniques: breathe in four seconds, hold four seconds, release six seconds. The breathwork is something I've come to integrate into my normal bedtime routine, and I find myself dozing off before five minutes have passed.</p><p>The meditation for a racing mind tries to divert the mind from sleep-interrupting thoughts by featuring a calming activity, like counting backward. The idea behind counting backward is to give the busy mind something to do, but not so much that it still feels busy, as the Sleep by Headspace narrator says.</p><p>More often than not, this was an effective tactic for me. If I woke up again, I'd do the meditation once more to lull myself back to sleep.</p><p>I used this section the most in my one-month trial of the app, and over the course of the month grew frustrated that there weren't more meditations on offer.</p><h2><strong>The caveat at the heart of Sleep by Headspace is that it requires most users to look at their phone moments before bed. </strong></h2><p>The blue light emitted by cell phones is a major contributor to sleep disruption, according to <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/blue-light-has-a-dark-side">Harvard Health Publishing</a>, and suppresses the secretion of sleep-inducing melatonin. </p><p>The general recommendation is to not look at phones for the two to three hours leading up to sleep. While briefly glancing at a cell phone in order to play an item from Sleep for Headspace likely won't ruin a night of sleep, it invites into the bedroom the temptation to continue scrolling.</p><p>One way to skirt this issue is using Headspace through smart speakers like Alexa and Google Assistant.</p><h2><strong>Headspace didn't solve my sleep issues, but it did help me get more Z's and reframe my thoughts going into sleep. </strong></h2><p>Instead of saying I'm bad at sleep, I now think of myself as getting better at it. That simple rephrasing takes some of the stress out of it and helps me drift off a bit easier.</p><p>And as many of Headspace's millions of users can probably attest, the way we frame things in our mind - whether through counting exercises that calm our thoughts or tweaking the way we think about our sleep habits - is our most powerful tool of all.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Alyssa Kayhill has been caring for COVID-19 patients in Brooklyn, New York, and feared making her girlfriend sick, so they've been staying in different places for three months.</li><li>On June 8, her girlfriend, Anh-Linh Trinh, thought she was surprising Kayhill for her birthday, but instead, Kayhill proposed.</li><li>Kayhill enlisted both of their families, as well as her sister's apartment complex, to help make the magical moment happen.</li></ul><p>After the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic kept them apart for three months, a nurse who's been caring for COVID-19 patients in Brooklyn, New York, decided to propose to her girlfriend when they reunited.</p><p>Alyssa Kayhill popped the question to Anh-Linh Trinh in Long Island City on June 8 as neighbors and other well-wishers cheered them on.</p><p>"It was the first time we've seen each other, and it was so many people out on their balconies and outside clapping," Kayhill told Insider. "It's just this really beautiful moment that couldn't have gone better."</p><h2>When the couple met nearly eight years ago, it was love at first sight</h2><p>Kayhill met Trinh at a party more than seven and a half years ago. Kayhill said she saw her from across the room and just had to talk to her. </p><p>"I just instantly fell for her. I've been love ever since," Kayhill said. </p><p><div type="image" title="Alyssa Kayhill" height="840" width="1120" msid="76330812" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But when the pandemic hit New York earlier this year, Kayhill, who works for the Brooklyn Hospital Center, was transferred to an ICU where she helped to care for patients with COVID-19. She feared for her girlfriend's health so suggested Trinh stay with her brother in upstate New York, where she could work from home. The couple had never been apart for that extended period of time and although they FaceTimed almost everyday, it was tough.</p><p>"I think that time for everyone was just hard," Kayhill said. "It was just a really heavy time in New York and across the world, but it was even harder because she wasn't here."</p><h2>Their time apart during the pandemic strengthened Kayhill's love for Trinh</h2><p>Kayhill decided that the next time she saw her girlfriend, the first thing she was going to do was propose. Discussing the proposal with her sister, Kayhill suggested she did it at 7 p.m., when New Yorkers clap for healthcare workers.</p><p>"I said wouldn't it be nice if we did it during the 7 p.m. clap because that's been such a huge source of comfort for me," Kayhill said. "Having all these New Yorkers come together every night and do that, it's been really, really sweet."</p><h3><div type="image" title="Alyssa Kayhill" height="3840" width="5120" msid="76330813" hostid="261"></div></h3><p>Her sister Kristie suggested Kayhill do the proposal in Kristie's neighborhood in Long Island City, where thousands participate in the 7 p.m. clap every night. Kristie also reached out to her building management, TF Cornerstone, and staff helped round up residents from two of their buildings to gather on the waterfront and join in with cheers for the couple.</p><p>"We've all needed some uplifting news in the past few months, and we couldn't have been more proud to support this lovely couple during Pride Month," said Zoe Elghanayan, principal and vice president at TF Cornerstone.</p><h2><strong>As Kayhill's birthday approached, Trinh planned to surprise her — unaware she'd be the one facing a surprise</strong></h2><p style="font-weight: 400;">Kayhill's birthday is June 8, and Trinh's brother notified her that Trinh planned to come back to the city to surprise her, so they pretended Kayhill was throwing a party.</p><p>"She walked down to come meet me, thinking I was going to be surprised, but as soon as she got to me I just knelt down and proposed to her," Kayhill said. "She was shocked, and it was just so wonderful."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;"><div type="image" title="Alyssa Kayhill" height="3840" width="5120" msid="76330814" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Trinh said yes.</p><h2>The moment felt like a fairy tale come to life</h2><p>Kayhill said she didn't plan to propose during Pride Month, but she's glad it worked out that way.
