Wipro to promote 80% of its eligible staff in the next three months — increments will be in line with last year

<keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, the Indian multinational IT company based in Bangalore, is considering various reward and recognition options for employees, including stock options which would be time-based. 
 
"We are experimenting with rewards in the short term and also with time based long term stock options," said Rishad Premji, Wipro’s Chief Strategy Officer at a panel discussion at the Nasscom India Leadership Forum on 'Surviving Success'. 
 
He also talked about Wipro executing various strategies to identify the future growth areas for the company that is, from the core, a services company. 
 
"At our core we are a services company. But who we sell to, what we sell and how we sell is changing," he said. 
 
The company recently acquired a global strategic design firm, on which he said, "Acquisitions are not the only way to make this change, but this is one part of executing that."

After last quarter’s massive dip, Wipro adds 7,000 employees with plans to continue hiring in Q2

Three Kolkata-based employees, working in a call centre run by Wipro for UK telecom firm <keyword id="194952" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TalkTalk">TalkTalk</keyword>, have been arrested over security breach allegations. 
 
As per the British media, the employees were arrested recently following a data security review by the London-based firm, which then alerted Indian police. 
 
UK firm TalkTalk has been affected due to a high-profile hacking in October in 2015 when personal details of its customers were compromised. 
 
The company has indicated that the latest arrests in India are not related to last year's data breach. 
 
"Following the October 2015 cyber-attack, we have been conducting a forensic review to ensure that all aspects of our security are as robust as possible - including that of our suppliers. Acting on information supplied by TalkTalk, the local police have arrested three individuals who have breached our policies and the terms of our contract with Wipro. We are also reviewing our relationship with Wipro," TalkTalk said in a statement. 
 
"We are determined to identify and deal effectively with these issues and we will continue to devote significant resource to keeping our customers' data safe," the phone and broadband service provider added. 
 
News of the arrests was first reported on Britain's 'Channel 4 News' on Wednesday. 
 
It reported that Indian police had made the arrests over the last fortnight in relation to allegations of theft of customers' data and using it to con them out of thousands of pounds. 
 
"Wipro is committed to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of all customer data and has a zero tolerance policy on security breaches," Wipro said in a statement. 
 
"Wipro is working closely with the customer in the investigation and will continue to extend its full cooperation to the investigating authorities. We are unable to comment on the matter that is currently under investigation," it added.

Pune, May 10 () IT Services firm Tech Mahindra hasbeen issued a notice by the office of the Labour Commissioner,Pune, in Maharashtra on a complaint that the company hadreduced salaries of its employees to maintain "profitability'in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A similar notice was issued earlier this month toanother IT firm, Wipro Technologies Ltd, on a complaintalleging that the firm was benching its employees.National Information Technology Employees Senate(NITES), an organisation working for the welfare and benefitsof employees in IT industry, had approached the LabourCommissioner's Office, claiming that they have receivedcomplaints from employees of Tech Mahindra, Pune, regardingthe reduction in salaries to maintain the "profitability ofthe business" under the COVID-19 pandemic."The company had also notified its employees throughan email on May 6 that the shift allowance, which is betweenRs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per employee, will be stopped from May1," the complaint letter from NITES reads.The application further claimed that because of thisdecision, payment of over 13,000 employees of Tech Mahindra isreduced.The NITES sought appropriate legal action against TechMahindra stating that the firm has violated the Maharashtragovernment's directions, rules and regulations.In a notice issued on the same date, officials in theLabour Commissioner's Office directed the firm to go throughthe state government's resolution dated March 31, 2020, andtake appropriate steps and release the salaries for March andApril and to inform the labour commissioner's office.The notice, signed by Nikhil Walke, Assistant LabourCommissioner, asked the firm not to terminate employees orreduce the salaries, and further stated that otherwise legalaction will be taken.Tech Mahindra Spokesperson said, "The shift allowancepaid for hardship due to travel to work at odd hours and otherout of pocket expenses, continues to be paid to all TechMahindra associates, who are coming to the office or are atclient locations as per policy."Our focus remains to ensure the well-being of ourassociates, customers and partner eco-system while maintainingbusiness continuity".Meanwhile, in its notice dated May 1 to WiproTechnologies Ltd on an NITES complaint that the company wasbenching its employees, the Pune Labour Commissioner Officeasked the IT firm to respond and not terminate any employees.Harpreet Saluja, general secretary, NITES, said theyhad approached the labour commissioner's office after theyreceived complaints from employees of WIPRO BPO, located inHinjewadi regarding employees being put on the bench tomaintain profitability."The company also notified the employees on April 23that they are on the bench with immediate effect. Because ofthis (the decision of the company) the pay and jobs of morethan 300 employees are at risk," the complaint reads.A statement from Wipro Limited stated that thespeculation related to the workforce is unfounded and has nobasis."Wipro categorically denies these rumours. There areno salary cuts for employees who are in between projects andare awaiting new assignments. Also, the company wants toreiterate that there are no retrenchment plans. Matching the IT industry standards, India's third largest <keyword id="142326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="software-exporter">software exporter</keyword> Wipro announced average salary hike of 7%. The hike is in line with its rivals <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>' announcements earlier this year. 
 

	TCS announced average salary hike of about 8% for its employees in India, while India’s second largest software exporter Infosys rolled out average wage increase of 6.5% in March, reports the Economic Times. "The <keyword id="102005" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro-Ltd-">Wipro Ltd.</keyword> has announced a salary increase for eligible employees, effective June 1, 2015. The average salary hike would be 7% for offshore employees and 2% for onsite employees, respectively, with high performers being rewarded with substantially higher increases in their compensation," said Saurabh Govil, global head - Human Resources, Wipro Limited. 
	 

	Wipro also raised the fixed pay salary component at the junior and mid-management levels. The <keyword id="6368235" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="IT-services">IT services</keyword> segment of Wipro has a headcount of 158,217, as of March 31, 2015. 
	 

	The company said, earlier, that it would give double-digit salary hikes to top performers. 
	 

	According to experts, employees in the IT sector are expected to get a 8%-10% average salary hike this year, but a top performer who has the right mix of technology and domain skills can expect more than double the average hike, going up to about 25% or even higher in some cases.

Employee attrition rate is the measure of employees who have left voluntarily or involuntarily over a period of time. Rate of employees leaving the organisation is highest in Infosys, second highest at Wipro and then at TCS. TCS, Infosys, and Wipro hired 2.33 lakh employees in FY22 to tame high attrition

It was only last year that <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, country’s third largest software exporter, had rolled out an ambitious pilot exercise across the company. Under the program, the company had ditched the traditional "bell-curve" appraisal system for a majority of its employees. 
 
Now, Wipro is implementing a new evaluation system which would stress more on frequent, quarterly feedbacks, which were earlier a one-time process that happened annually. 
 
"Traditionally, we've looked at elements including bell curves, building differentiation, categorization, etc. We wanted to make the process of giving feedback more frequent and our performance management system to be an ongoing coaching based process rather than just a one-time annual exercise," said Saurabh Govil, chief HRO at Wipro. 
 
The IT industry of the country is valued at $160-billion as of now, and is undergoing the biggest transitional period in its history. 
 Wipro’s rivals, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="28126" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HCL">HCL</keyword>, are undergoing the process of ditching the "bell curve" appraisal, but Wipro has become the first IT services company which has had a full appraisal cycle without applying the bell curve. 
 
"Last year, we rolled out a pilot of our revised performance appraisal system. In the first phase of the pilot we did away with the bell curve for 80 per cent of the workforce," said Govil. 
 
As part of the new appraisal system, Wipro will allocate performance-linked compensation budgets to its managers. This would empower managers to take individual decisions related to employee appraisals. In the previous system, however, managers had to be conventional with the bell-curve bandwidth. 
 
"We felt that managers are taking much more ownership, and being more accountable in the revised performance managed system. We found them saying - it's my decision and it is not something that is being prescribed to me. And this exercise has also ushered in more transparency as it is based on a rating based on their goals and objectives for the year," said Govil. 
 
In the second phase of the pilot program, Wipro is thinking of rolling out this exercise for most managerial-level employees, and would cover the remaining 20% of employees.

Wipro registered the lowest of all revenue growth of 3% compared to TCS (4.5%) and Infosys (7%) during the October to December period. Analysts had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/infosys-is-expected-to-set-the-bar-slightly-higher-for-tcs-hcl-tech-and-others/articleshow/88703083.cms">expected a revenue growth </a>of 3.9% during the same period. Not only Wipro, all other technology firms are struggling with the increasing employee cost for quite some time. But for Wipro, the rate of employees leaving the company has been the highest in the December quarter. Going forward, the IT giant is planning to hire 30,000 freshers in 2023 as the attrition rate increases to 22% from 20.5% in the last quarter. Further, the relentless surge of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has forced Wipro to close its offices globally for the next four weeks.
