Much before the retirement of a <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword>, the chairman or the company’s board chalk out succession plan in order to save the company from the downfall. This is what India's third largest software firm <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> did. It appointed <keyword id="2067405" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Abid-Ali-Neemuchwala">Abid Ali Neemuchwala</keyword>, the former Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) BPO head, as its first ever chief operating officer (<keyword id="6423421" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="COO">COO</keyword>). The information was revealed in an Economic Times report. 
 
With this announcement, the process of succession planning begins at Wipro as TK Kurien’s five-year-term as CEO will expire the next year. 
 Abid Ali Neemuchwala, who is the former head of <keyword id="748094" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="TCS-BPO">TCS BPO</keyword>, and energy and utilities chief <keyword id="608152" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anand-Padmanabhan">Anand Padmanabhan</keyword> were leading the race to be named Wipro's first COO. And Wipro picked Neemuchwala over Padmanabhan to lead the post. 
 
"Abid brings invaluable experience with his track record of building and scaling businesses. I am confident his deep understanding of technology and expertise in all facets of IT &amp; BPS businesses will help power our businesses to greater heights," Kurien told ET. 
 

	In his role, Abid will head the Service Lines of Global Infrastructure Services, Business Application Services, Business Process Services, and Advanced Technology Solutions. He will also head Business Operations; the geographies comprising Continental Europe, Africa, and LATAM; Strategic Engagements, Advisor Relationships as well as the Marketing function.
 
Earlier, another ET report had hinted at the creation of a COO position at the Bangalore-headquartered IT company to free up TK Kurien so that he could focus on technology vision and strategy. 
 Similar succession strategies were earlier adopted by other renowned IT firms. At the Mumbai-based TCS, N Chandrasekaran was appointed as the COO before he escalated to the post of CEO by replacing S Ramadorai. On the other hand at <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, S Gopalakrishnan replaced Nandan Nilekani to take over as CEO and SD Shibulal succeeded Gopalakrishnan, the leading business daily added.

This is how Wipro is clearing the deck for its new heir

<ul><li><keyword id="6419840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword>, executive Chairman and Managing Director of <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, to retire by July. </li><li>His son <keyword id="197349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishad-Premji">Rishad Premji</keyword> will be taking over his post. </li><li>Azim Premji had been the executive chairman of the IT company for 53 years.</li></ul>Azim Premji, founder of Wipro, will be resigning from his post of executive chairman and Managing Director by July according to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/people/azim-premji-to-retire-next-month-rishad-chairman-md-ceo-1559817362459.html">reports</a>. His son Rishad Premji, who is currently on the board of Wipro and its Chief Strategy Officer, will be taking over as executive chairman. Premji Senior will continue to be on the board of the company. He had served as the executive chairman of the IT giant for a long period of 53 years. Meanwhile, a statement from the company also states that Abidali Neemuchwala, who has been the CEO of the company since February 2016, will also be the managing director of the company. Azim Premji, who has been at the forefront of IT growth in India, is a graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. According to the company’s website, Premji is responsible for turning Wipro into a “$8.5 billion Revenue IT, BPO and R&amp;D Services organization with a presence in 58 countries.” Premji, who is also one of the biggest philanthropists in India, had founded the non-profit organization Azim Premji Foundation in 2001. In March, Premji also earmarked all of his economic benefits for philanthropy, setting aside 34% of Wipro shares worth $7.5 billion. His total contribution to philanthropy now stands at a whopping $21 billion, including 67% of economic ownership of Wipro Limited. Wipro founder Azim Premji to retire, son Rishad to take over

A former <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> employee <keyword id="3089392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shreya-Ukil">Shreya Ukil</keyword>, who works at the <keyword id="3089577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indias-third-largest-software-company">India’s third largest software company</keyword>'s London office, has filed a suit claiming 1.2 million pounds in damages, alleging that she was subjected to severe sexual harassment by male colleagues, faced gender discrimination, was getting an unequal pay and also faced unfair dismissal. 
 
As per the UK-based The Telegraph, Ukil had alleged that she was subjected to a "deeply predatory, misogynistic culture" at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wipro">Wipro</a>. 
 Ukil, 39, who worked as the sales and marketing manager, has filed a suit at Central London Employment Tribunal alleging that she was discriminated in terms of her pay in comparison to male colleagues at similar positions. Shreya has also accused <keyword id="1086715" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manoj-Punja">Manoj Punja</keyword>, ex-Wipro VP and former global <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bpo">BPO </a>head at Wipro, who was her manager of influencing her to have an affair with him. Punja had resigned from Wipro last year. 
 
According to an Economic Times report, this case is not the first such instance of sexual harassment against women in the IT industry. Earlier in September, two-thirds of companies on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nifty">Nifty</a>, a 50-stock benchmark index of the NSE, had reported that out of total 415 cases of sexual harassment in the previous financial year, 80% of these were reported in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=INFORMATION+TECHNOLOGY">information technology</a> (IT) and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BANK">banking </a>firms. 
 
In an email response to ET, Wipro has strongly dismissed the sexual discrimination and harassment allegations from former employee Shreya Ukil. The software exporter termed the allegations as "insidious and defamatory." 
 
Terming accusations made by Ukil as "scurrilous," a Wipro spokesperson told the business daily that both Ukil and former BPO head Manoj Punja were terminated from the company after it was established "beyond reasonable doubt" that both of them had violated the company's code of conduct.

Wipro lands in soup, faces 1.2 mn pound discrimination suit by an ex-employee

An all women business and technology park (WBP) has been inaugurated by IT major <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, along with <keyword id="152170" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saudi-Aramco">Saudi Aramco</keyword> and <keyword id="3345936" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Princess-Nourah-University">Princess Nourah University</keyword> (PNU), and is expected to create nearly 21,000 jobs by 2025. 
 Saudi Aramco worked as the strategic advisor and anchor of WBP, which is a JV of PNU (world's largest university for women) and <keyword id="858495" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro-Arabia">Wipro Arabia</keyword>. It would be responsible for developing the facilities and infrastructure at the park set in Riyadh, and would also take care of the training and employment of up to 21,000 Saudi women, said a Wipro statement. 
 
"Dedicated to working women, this business park is a first of its kind project aimed at providing knowledge-based employment for women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," it added. 
 
This park is expected to be the largest engineering drafting services, business process services and IT hub in the entire region for industry sectors, which include oil and gas, government, manufacturing, healthcare, telecom and construction. 
 
However, this is not the first of its kind, given that Wipro's larger rival TCS has already established its first all-women Business Process Services (BPS) centre in Riyadh in 2013, where 1,000 women work in BPO operations, amongst whom 85% are Saudi nationals. 
 Wipro’s Chairman <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> said that it is the company's endeavour to foster an environment that encourages and enables more women to participate in business and tap their leadership potential. 
 
"It has been more than a decade since Wipro began its operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and localisation has always been an important aspect of our business strategy here," he added.

Wipro’s all-women business park in Riyadh will create 21,000 jobs in coming ten years

<ul><li>NASSCOM and Bank of America are at odds about the job cuts set to occur across the Indian IT industry in the ongoing fiscal year.</li><li>Bank of America asserts that up to three million people could find themselves unemployed as a result of automation while NASSCOM asserts that only 1.4 million are employed in the ‘low skill’ segment to begin with.</li><li>Companies in the Indian IT sector may continue to be ‘net hirers’ in FY22, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be losing their jobs to software programs that can perform day-to-day tasks better than humans. </li></ul>India’s leading information technology (IT) lobby, NASSCOM, and analysts at Bank of America are sparring over how many employees in the sector are set to lose their jobs this year. Whether it's half a million or three million, ‘low skilled’ <keyword id="57650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-jobs">IT jobs</keyword> are under threat of automation — and even the executives recognise this. Bank of America has estimated that Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>), <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, <keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword>, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant and others will see a 30% reduction in ‘low-skilled’ jobs globally by 2022 because of robot process automation (RPA). The global financial services company gauged that around 9 million people are employed in such roles in India, which means 3 million — one third of the total — will find themselves unemployed by the end of the year. NASSCOM has hit back saying that only 1.5 million people are employed in low-skilled and BPO roles, not 9 million. Which means, even if there are to be job losses, at the same rate as Bank of America is predicting, they may only amount to around half a million. Pune, May 10 () IT Services firm Tech Mahindra hasbeen issued a notice by the office of the Labour Commissioner,Pune, in Maharashtra on a complaint that the company hadreduced salaries of its employees to maintain "profitability'in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A similar notice was issued earlier this month toanother IT firm, Wipro Technologies Ltd, on a complaintalleging that the firm was benching its employees.National Information Technology Employees Senate(NITES), an organisation working for the welfare and benefitsof employees in IT industry, had approached the LabourCommissioner's Office, claiming that they have receivedcomplaints from employees of Tech Mahindra, Pune, regardingthe reduction in salaries to maintain the "profitability ofthe business" under the COVID-19 pandemic."The company had also notified its employees throughan email on May 6 that the shift allowance, which is betweenRs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per employee, will be stopped from May1," the complaint letter from NITES reads.The application further claimed that because of thisdecision, payment of over 13,000 employees of Tech Mahindra isreduced.The NITES sought appropriate legal action against TechMahindra stating that the firm has violated the Maharashtragovernment's directions, rules and regulations.In a notice issued on the same date, officials in theLabour Commissioner's Office directed the firm to go throughthe state government's resolution dated March 31, 2020, andtake appropriate steps and release the salaries for March andApril and to inform the labour commissioner's office.The notice, signed by Nikhil Walke, Assistant LabourCommissioner, asked the firm not to terminate employees orreduce the salaries, and further stated that otherwise legalaction will be taken.Tech Mahindra Spokesperson said, "The shift allowancepaid for hardship due to travel to work at odd hours and otherout of pocket expenses, continues to be paid to all TechMahindra associates, who are coming to the office or are atclient locations as per policy."Our focus remains to ensure the well-being of ourassociates, customers and partner eco-system while maintainingbusiness continuity".Meanwhile, in its notice dated May 1 to WiproTechnologies Ltd on an NITES complaint that the company wasbenching its employees, the Pune Labour Commissioner Officeasked the IT firm to respond and not terminate any employees.Harpreet Saluja, general secretary, NITES, said theyhad approached the labour commissioner's office after theyreceived complaints from employees of WIPRO BPO, located inHinjewadi regarding employees being put on the bench tomaintain profitability."The company also notified the employees on April 23that they are on the bench with immediate effect. Because ofthis (the decision of the company) the pay and jobs of morethan 300 employees are at risk," the complaint reads.A statement from Wipro Limited stated that thespeculation related to the workforce is unfounded and has nobasis."Wipro categorically denies these rumours. There areno salary cuts for employees who are in between projects andare awaiting new assignments. Also, the company wants toreiterate that there are no retrenchment plans. Wipro haswell-defined policies and people practices in place to takecare of its employees," the statement reads.It further stated that Wipro is yet to receive anycommunication from the Labour Department.The company will present the facts before thedepartment, as and when required. Shankar agreed that automation is set to seep in with more intensity and hiring will considerably come down. 
 
Infosys has trained nearly 490 people in a first batch of machine learning and the use of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">artificial intelligence</a> (AI). 
 
Infosys added 5,700 people in the first nine months of this fiscal, compared to about 17,000 in the same period last year. In the December quarter, Infosys' total employee strength actually declined -an extremely rare occurrence for India's No. 2 IT services company . The total strength fell by 66 to 1,99,763. 
 
Sectors that will be highly impacted due to automation will be BPO, application management and infrastructure management. 
 
Wipro’s Global HR head Saurabh Govil in November had said the company released 3,200 people through automation to do more innovative work.

Worrisome? Infosys releases around 2,000 employees every quarter, thanks to automation

Want an easy way to help your employees become more effective? Ask them to spend the end of each workday reflecting on their performance, research suggests.
A recent study found that "employees who spent the last 15 minutes of each day of their training period writing and reflecting on what they had learned did 23% better in the final training test than other employees," <a href="http://hbr.org/2014/07/dear-diary/ar/1">the Harvard Business Review reports</a>.
The study, "<a href="http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2414478">Learning by Thinking: How Reflection Aids Performance</a>," was conducted by Giada Di Stefano of HEC Paris, Francesca Gino and Gary P. Pisano of Harvard Business School, and Bradley Staats of the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School.
It found that employees who practice a skill and then reflect on their progress learn it better than those who just practiced.
If you have new employees or want a team-building exercise, you can use the "Dear Diary" technique, <a href="http://hbr.org/2014/07/dear-diary/ar/1">as the Harvard Business Review calls it</a>, with your team. Employees simply spend 15 minutes or less at the end of the day writing one or two short paragraphs about how well they performed that day and what they learned. You can customize it by using a rating system, where they rate their performance on a scale from 1-5 or 1-10.
Asking them to share the results with you or the team can aid communication, but the researchers noted that employees who shared their results did not perform significantly better than those who only reflected by themselves.
To draw this conclusion, the researchers performed two experiments in a lab, where paid participants solved brain teasers. In both cases, the employees who were told to reflect on the strategy they used to solve the first problem did better than those who didn't. Those who both reflected and explained their techniques to other participants also did better than those who did nothing extra but had essentially the same results as those who only reflected, within the margin of error.
Then the team decided to test their findings in a real-world setting. They went to Wipro BPO, a leading business-process outsourcing company in India.
At the end of employee training, Wipro gives new employees a test, which is graded on a scale of 0-100. The employees who took 15 minutes to reflect at the end of training for 10 days scored 23% higher on average than those who didn't. Those who both reflected and shared their reflections with fellow trainees scored 25% higher than those who didn't, but the team determined this difference to be negligible.
The research team notes that the findings can be used to improve employee performance even when they progress beyond trainees.

This Simple Daily Exercise Boosts Employee Performance

BANGALORE: This is a landmark for Indian IT. The country's largest IT services provider, <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (TCS), has broken into the league of top 10 global IT services companies, moving from the 13th position in 2012 to the 10th spot in 2013. 
 
Twelve years ago, when TCS' revenues were about $1 billion, then CEO S Ramadorai had laid out a vision to be among the top 10 by 2010. It's taken a little longer, partly because of the global financial slump of 2008-09, but the company has now got there, and considering the pace at which it is growing compared to its global counterparts, the ranking could get better fairly quickly in the years to come. 
 
"Talk to any incumbent western service provider today, and the one making them all tremble from the sub-continent is TCS," writes Jamie Snowdon, executive VP of research operations at HfS Research, the consultancy firm that compiled the ranking. 
 TCS is estimated to have IT services revenues of $10.1 billion (out of its total revenues of about $12.5 billion). IBM ($54.4 billion), <keyword id="102186" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Fujitsu">Fujitsu</keyword> ($32.1 billion), <keyword id="6528042" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hewlett-Packard">Hewlett-Packard</keyword> ($29.2 billion) and <keyword id="6370971" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Accenture">Accenture</keyword> ($25.4 billion) lead the list. 
 
The research compares IT services, and excludes other areas such as BPO, R&amp;D services and software/hardware products. And it uses figures for the four quarters of calendar year 2013. TCS rose to the 10th spot displacing Montreal-based IT services firm CGI. 
 India-based companies Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro and <keyword id="28126" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="HCL">HCL</keyword> are at the 15th, 18th, 20th and 25th positions, respectively, all of them rising by one to three spots compared to 2012. HfS Research believes that Cognizant could be in the top 10 in the next 2-3 years, may be at the expense of US IT company CSC. CSC's revenues last year had dropped compared to the year before. 
 
On TCS, HfS says its aggressive targeting of renewals and new business, particularly in continental Europe, was an important factor in driving its assault on the leaders. TCS, it said, is frequently seen as being the most flexible service provider on pricing and terms, and has a developing reputation for winning any deal anywhere in the world at any price, if it really wants. 
 
"The firm is increasingly being perceived by many today as an alternative provider to the Western Tier 1s, that can come in and fix messy contracts and implementations; it has shown an appetite and willingness pick up a lot of the low-margin, low-value work that seemingly every Western Tier 1 wants out of and make the deals profitable and leverageable across clients," said Phil Fersht, CEO of HfS. TCS also has an extraordinary profit margin, something that's normally difficult to achieve in conjunction with high revenue growth.
