Bangladesh Prime Minister <keyword id="20024637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sheikh-hasina" source="keywords">Sheikh Hasina</keyword> has resigned and an <keyword id="21030472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interim-government" source="keywords">interim government</keyword> is taking over, <keyword id="22287783" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bangladesh-Army-chief" source="keywords">Bangladesh Army Chief</keyword> General <keyword id="22674747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Waqar-uz-Zaman" source="keywords">Waqar-uz-Zaman</keyword> announced here on Monday. "I'm taking all responsibility (of the country). Please cooperate," he said in a televised address amid reports that Hasina has left the country. There were unconfirmed reports that she was headed to a city in India. The Army chief said he had met <keyword id="19973360" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-leaders" source="keywords">political leaders</keyword> and told them the Army would take over responsibility for law and order. As <keyword id="19905184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="protests" source="keywords">protests</keyword> spiralled across the country, he said he had asked both Army and police not to fire any shots. More than 100 people have been killed in the protests against the Hasina government over the last two days. The country has been witnessing fierce demonstrations over the controversial <keyword id="22297733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="quota-system" source="keywords">quota system</keyword> that reserves 30 per cent of jobs for the families of veterans who fought the 1971 liberation war. Zaman also urged restraint and asked protesters to end the violence.
