From the coming new academic session, more than 300 universities across the country can implement the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (<keyword id="1650316" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fyup" source="Orion">FYUP</keyword>). However, this will not be mandatory as students will have the option to pursue FYUP or three-year undergraduate programme. According to <keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword>, students will get a four-year undergraduate 'UG Honours' degree with research specialisation. At present, FYUP has been implemented in about 150 universities across the country from the current session 2023-24. According to UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadish Kumar, this number will double in the next session. FYUP was implemented by 105 universities across the country at the beginning of the academic session 2023-24. The universities implementing four-year undergraduate courses included 19 central universities, 24 state level universities, 44 deemed universities and 18 private universities. These include Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jammu Central University, <keyword id="64114" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="visva-bharati-university" source="Orion">Visva Bharati University</keyword>, <keyword id="19309330" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rashtriya-sanskrit-university" source="Orion">Rashtriya Sanskrit University</keyword> and Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Now the number of these universities has increased to 150. Under the framework of FYUP, UGC has provided students the option to pursue a three-year undergraduate degree as well as a four-year Honours degree, following the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP). According to the UGC Chairman, students will be provided with a three-year UG degree on completion of 120 credits and FYUP Honours degree on completion of 160 credits in 4 years. Students wishing to pursue research specialisation will have to undertake a research project in the four-year undergraduate course. With this, they will get an Honours degree along with research specialisation. Experts believe that the new draft of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) will help students wishing to pursue higher education abroad. The craze among Indian students for studying abroad is increasing year by year. Till November last year, more than 6 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher education, whereas in 2021 this number was 4.44 lakh. As per these figures, Canada, Germany, Australia, United States and Italy are the top 5 countries where more Indian students prefer to study. According to the new draft of UGC, now students will be able to get undergraduate 'Honours' degree only after completing four years instead of three years. UGC says that the draft curriculum and credit framework of FYUP is as per international standards. One advantage of international equality in the level of education is that Indian students will get more opportunities than before for higher education in universities of America and Western countries. However, some academics do not agree with this. Renowned educationist <keyword id="19309331" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cs-kandpal" source="Orion">CS Kandpal</keyword> said, "FYUP will help those students who are interested in getting admission in many famous universities of America. But there is a need to teach such skills in the programme so that employment can be increased. Such skills will also be very helpful for students studying abroad. These skills may include communication, adaptability, foreign language, and self-awareness." "The basic objective was to include more number of students in the three-year programme in the country. FYUP is an extension of the three-year degree programme. Like in schools you go to class, prepare notes and give exams. You get a grade according to your performance in the exam. With this type of education, students are not prepared to pursue graduation as well as career in good universities abroad, because their aim is only to get admission in a foreign university. Institutions which are planning to start FYUP need to think about this," he added.

300 univs to see national rollout of four-year undergraduate programme

Kolkata, July 4 () The Visva Bharati university has decided to do away with written exams for final year semester and will instead award 60 per cent marks as the average of two best semester scores and the rest 40 per cent under two other heads in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. The Executive Council of the Central university in a meeting on Friday also decided that for the remaining papers of school certificate examinations, there will be 80 per cent internal assessment and 20 per cent viva by affiliated schools, they said. For terminal semester exams of undergraduate and post-graduate courses, the EC resolved while no written on practical tests will be held, there will be an internal assessment of 20 per cent of the full marks of each programme. For 60 per cent of the total marks, an average of two best semester scores will be given while rest 20 per cent of the marks will be allotted based on dissertation, project and home assignments which will be sent online by the candidate to the teacher concerned for evaluation, the notice issued by the university authorities said. For the papers where there is no provision of internal assessment, the evaluation of such papers may be made on the basis of the total marks submitted by the head of the department such as dissertation/project works/home assignments. The EC is the highest decision making body of the central institution. Reacting to the notice Students Federation Of India leader of Visva Bharati, Somnath Sau said: "we have been opposing conducting written exams and opting for an alternative way of evaluation." He expressed satisfaction that finally Visva Bharati authorities has decided to go for alternative ways of evaluation in the present situation. SUS RG RG

COVID-19: No written exam for final year semester in Visva Bharati University

A Polish student pursuing his masters degree at Jadavpur University (JU) here has been asked to leave India by the <keyword id="65242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-home-ministry">Union Home Ministry</keyword>, purportedly over his presence in a rally opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, a teacher said on Sunday. Kamil Siedcynski, now in the final semester of the comparative literature course, was slapped a notice by the local Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) - an arm of the Home Ministry - about a week ago, Partha Pratim Roy, General Secretary of the <keyword id="1951941" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jadavpur-University-Teachers-Association">Jadavpur University Teachers Association</keyword>, told IANS. The FRRO ordered him to leave India within 15 days of receiving the notice for his involvement in "anti-government activities", saying it amounted to a "visa violation". The notice did not, however, give any details of the "anti-government activities" he has participated in, but warned that he would be prosecuted under the <keyword id="6366165" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreigners">Foreigners</keyword> Act, 1946, if the deadline was not adhered to. Roy said Siedcynski had been present during a rally organised in the Ramlila Maidan in the city by intellectuals, artists and students against CAA on December 19. "Kamil appealed to the FRRO to reconsider its decision, saying he had gone to the rally out of curiousity and also to click images. But the officials here said they were helpless and the decision has been taken in Delhi," Roy told IANS. Siedcynski is likely to move the court on Monday against the order. He earlier studied Bengali literature at Visva Bharati, a Central university, and can write and speak in the language fluently. He has also translated a Polish fairy tale into Bengali. "He comes from a poor financial background. So the university has waived his fees. He is a very serious student and not associated with any student organisation," said Roy. Siedcynski was not available for comments. The FRRO earlier issued a similar order against <keyword id="8854172" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="afsara-anika">Afsara Anika</keyword> Meem, a first year Bangladeshi undergraduate student at the Visva Bharati University's Fine Arts department. Meem had posted on social media photos of an anti-CAA agitation. Last December, two other foreign nationals - Jakob Lindenthal, a post graduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and Norwegian woman Janne Mette-Johannson received similar orders for taking part in protests against the law. The CAA, passed by parliament in December, seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists who fled religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh till December 31, 2014.

New Delhi, Nov 20 () Raising the issue of scam-hit Punjab &amp; Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, a BJP member asked the finance ministry to direct the RBI to resolve the issue and ensure that all depositors get back their money.
Kapil Patil (BJP), Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra, said lakhs of people have accounts in that bank and now they are facing problem as the RBI has put certain restrictions on withdrawal of money.
He said that several of the persons do not have money to pay fees for their children.
"They observed Diwali festival in dark...I request finance ministry to direct RBI on the issue so that people get back their money," he said while raising the issue during Zero Hour.
Distressed depositors of scam-hit PMC Bank on Wednesday held a day-long protest outside the RBI office here, demanding their "hard-earned" money be returned at the earliest.
Raising an issue during the Zero Hour, Nishikant Dubey (BJP) demanded that members of ST community who change their religion should be denied the benefit of reservation.
Citing an example, he said the percentage of ST community becoming christians have increased from about 3 per cent in 1947 to about 20 per cent.
