Today, Android is the largest mobile operating system in the world, in both worldwide market share and sales, and smartphones and apps wouldn't be what they are today without the existence of Android.
Razer, which has been called the "Apple of gaming" due to its polished designs and high price tags, is actually looking to follow in Google's footsteps - but this time, by betting big on virtual reality.
That's why Razer recently announced <a href="http://www.osvr.com/#">Open-Source Virtual Reality</a> (OSVR), an open platform for virtual reality game developers and hardware manufacturers to unify under one umbrella.
Basically, Razer is trying to create the Android for VR, and it has a good chance to succeed.

When I met with Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan to discuss OSVR, it quickly became clear that Tan and Razer fully believe virtual reality will be the next major computing platform. Razer sees the same opening in VR that Google saw in mobile back in 2005 - Tan says OSVR will be the unifying platform that virtual reality desperately needs.
That's because virtual reality is really the wild west at the moment. While Oculus is leading the charge with the Rift and its partnership with Samsung to create the Gear VR, there's really no unifying virtual reality platform at this time.
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The Rift, which originally started as an open-source, DIY project from Palmer Luckey, has since evolved into a company that's still defining how open (or otherwise) the Rift will be. In the meantime, there's plenty of of game developers, hardware manufacturers, and accessory makers that are also creating virtual reality products.
Ideally, it would be great if they could all play nicely with each other.
That's really the goal of OSVR, to make sure that whatever virtual reality headset or accessory you use, they'll all be able to function together.
To show off exactly what it's talking about, Razer has created its own virtual reality developer kit that's highly customizable. Since OSVR is more about a unifying platform than any specific piece of hardware, Razer lets anyone download the plans to make their own version of its headset.
Razer is also making a pre-built developer kit for tinkerers, to demonstrate the software's open nature and customization options: For example, Razer's headset includes USB 3 ports for attaching gaming peripherals like the Leap Motion controller for hand tracking.

With OSVR, I was able to play a demo where my hands could shoot fireballs. In all honesty, it was far from perfect and I'm not sold on the Leap Motion's capabilities to be the input solution VR needs, but that's the beauty of OSVR: it enables people to have options instead of drawing a line in the sand.
The biggest issue keeping virtual reality from truly taking off is content, and OSVR has the potential to make it easy for developers to create the games and experiences they want, making them easily compatible with the accessories or headsets they want.
So where does this leave Oculus?
Razer's CEO told me the company had talked with Oculus, which was interested in OSVR and what the company was trying to do. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey understands the importance of open-source platforms, and there's no reason that Oculus couldn't make its software and hardware compatible with OSVR. It will really come down to whether or not Oculus wants to retain a certain level of control and turn the Rift into an iPhone and iOS-like device with its own rules and stipulations.
Regardless of what Oculus decides, the future of virtual reality looks a little brighter thanks to OSVR, and it could turn into the next Android if Razer plays its cards right.

"This new version of what I think is one of the greatest games ever made will offer players an entirely new way to experience this iconic open world in virtual reality.""San Andreas" is part of a trilogy of "Grand Theft Auto" games from the PlayStation 2 era that are getting remastered for an upcoming release, "Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition."It looks significantly more modern than the original game:"San Andreas" originally launched way back in 2004 on the PlayStation 2, and has been ported to a variety of other platforms in the years since - everything from modern game consoles to aging smartphones. 'Grand Theft Auto' is coming to virtual reality through Facebook's Quest headset

The technology captures the 3D information of the footage, transforming any recording into an immersive three dimensional world that users can interact with. Vivid, the VR application, is currently in its beta stage and available on iOS. The technology enables them to rewind, zoom in, and examine the scenes of their daily lives. However, in Vivid's case, memories are captured through a smartphone, thanks to sensors and software with 3D capture technology. <keyword id="16652278" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="andrew-mchugh" source="Orion">Andrew McHugh</keyword>, the founder of <keyword id="16652277" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wist" source="Orion">Wist</keyword>, revealed that the right combination of this technology could create spatial moments in time that one can step back into. To relive a memory, users must record an experience with the Vivid app, which collects the necessary information to transform 2D footage into a 3D world. The engineering and design of the app will make it as simple as capturing a video and bringing it to life. McHugh explained that the app saves colour, depth, device pose, audio, and scene information during the capture process. Depth is captured using LiDAR sensors on Pro model iPhones and iPads. The app and program are still in the early stages, and the videos produced may appear glitchy and lack certain portions of the scene. Wist aims to enhance the app's performance before its official release. Wist is in a private beta phase on iOS and Meta Quest 2. Wist plans to release a Meta Quest Pro version later this year. This app is straight out of Black Mirror — it lets you capture and revisit memories in virtual reality

India’s largest multiplex chain <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/You-can-buy-a-PVR-movie-ticket-on-Paytm-now/articleshow/51494335.cms">PVR</a> Cinemas is all set to launch 10 Virtual Reality (VR) lounges worth Rs 15 crore across some of its properties spread countrywide. 
 
The first such lounge was launched in Noida, and similar lounges will come up in Mumbai, Delhi and a couple of South Indian cities in next six to eight months. 
 In these VR lounges, <keyword id="406134" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="movie-buffs">movie buffs</keyword> will get to experience a new dimension of entertainment before the film begins. 
 
"We track our consumers' journey across properties and are always on the lookout for what more we can offer them. This idea of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/tech/we-just-got-the-first-real-look-into-how-well-virtual-reality-is-selling/articleshow/57379295.cms">VR</a> lounge came last year and we partnered with HP for the latest ground-breaking technology," said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Know-why-PVRs-stocks-are-enjoying-their-showtime/articleshow/48050084.cms">PVR</a> CEO <keyword id="9154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Dutta">Gautam Dutta</keyword>. 
 
Dutta added that it would cost about Rs 1.5 crore per lounge on an average, owing to average per seat cost being Rs 25 lakh, and all lounges having 4-12 seats.

Ten virtual reality lounges to be launched by PVR

In 2014, 24-year-old Palmer Luckey <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-to-buy-oculus-rift-for-2-billion-2014-3" target="_blank">sold his virtual reality company, Oculus, to Facebook for $2 billion</a> (£1.6 billion). Since then his company has become a headache for Mark Zuckerberg. Now, less than three years later, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/oculus-cofounder-palmer-luckey-leaves-facebook-2017-3" target="_blank">Luckey is on his way out</a> of the social media giant. In that time Oculus made headlines for all the wrong reasons: <ul><li>The Daily Beast reported that Luckey was the backer of a conservative group dedicated to "shit-posting" anti-Hillary Clinton memes.</li><li>Luckey's appearance on the cover of Time drew as many lampoons as it did praise.</li><li>Oculus was accused of stealing the technology its product is based on and <keyword id="6354576" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> paid a further $500 million in legal costs.</li><li>Oculus sales have not hit expectations.</li><li>Luckey, Oculus's founder, was replaced as the leader of his own company by a more experienced executive.</li></ul>The question that's likely to be on many people's minds is: "Was it Luckey's choice to leave or was he fired?" A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on this matter. Luckey's departure, along with several other events at Oculus, suggests that Facebook's big VR bet has so far produced more headaches than victories. <h2>What happened before Luckey left</h2>Last September, <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/09/22/palmer-luckey-the-facebook-billionaire-secretly-funding-trump-s-meme-machine.html">The Daily Beast revealed</a> that Luckey secretly funded a conservative group called " Nimble America" that created viral, anti-Hillary Clinton memes. Nimble America said in its description that "we've proven that s---posting is powerful and meme magic is real." Luckey told The Daily Beast that Nimble America work is "something that no campaign is going to run." One such example was an enlarged image of Clinton's face with the phrase "Too big to jail" alongside it. Luckey, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/palmer-luckey/" target="_blank">who</a> <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/palmer-luckey/" target="_blank"> has a net worth of around $730 million (£586 million) according to Forbes</a>, admitted his involvement with Nimble America and said he ran a Reddit account under the pseudonym, "NimbleRichMan." That same pseudonym shows up on the Nimble America website, which describes Luckey as vice president. He later denied using the Reddit account. "I've got plenty of money. Money is not my issue," Luckey told The Daily Beast. "I thought it sounded like a real jolly good time." Following the revelation, multiple female employees resigned from Facebook, people familiar with the matter told Business Insider. Prior to The Daily Beast's article, Luckey was the public face of Oculus and regularly made media appearances on behalf of the company. Time Magazine Luckey on the front cover of Time. He has been keeping a low profile ever since. He was absent from Oculus's annual developer conference in October and not mentioned when Oculus <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebooks-oculus-ceo-brendan-iribe-steps-down-2016-12">restructured its leadership team</a> in December. <h2>Lawsuit and Xiaomi hire highlights issues deep inside Oculus </h2>In January, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-hires-xiaomis-hugo-barra-to-lead-virtual-reality-business-2017-1">Zuckerberg hired Xiaomi executive Hugo Barra</a> to lead all of Facebook's <keyword id="6369781" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="virtual-reality">virtual reality</keyword> efforts, suggesting that Facebook wanted to give the Oculus project some adult supervision. Luckey's last public appearance on behalf of Oculus was in February, when he testified in a Dallas lawsuit by game maker ZeniMax that claimed Oculus was based on stolen technology. The jury found Oculus be guilty of patent infringement and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-ordered-to-pay-zenimax-500-million-in-oculus-vr-lawsuit-verdict-2017-2">ordered Facebook to pay $500 million (£401 million) in damages</a>. The jury also found that Luckey violated a signed <keyword id="809463" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Non-Disclosure-Agreement">non-disclosure agreement</keyword> with ZeniMax during Oculus's early days. He was personally ordered to pay $50 million (£40 million) for false designation. <h2>Oculus Rift sales failed to meet expectations</h2>Facebook was heralded by the media as one of the tech industry's leaders in virtual reality when it acquired Oculus three years ago, but early sales of VR headsets have since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-says-virtual-reality-wont-be-profitable-for-quite-awhile-2017-2">fallen short of Zuckerberg's expectations</a>. When Zuckerberg was asked about Facebook's VR and <keyword id="6369782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="augmented-reality">augmented reality</keyword> efforts during <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-q4-earnings-results-2017-2">a conference in February</a>, he said "we're a little behind from where we want to be." He added that the delayed shipments of the company's Oculus Rift VR headset and touch controllers were a "disappointment," and that VR sales "won't be profitable for quite awhile." Facebook has yet to reveal how many units of its more expensive Oculus Rift headset have been sold but competitors like <a href="http://www.amazon.de/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_de_DE=%C5M%C5Z%D5%D1&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=htc" target="_blank">HTC</a> and Sony have also made early market share inroads and put pressure on Oculus. Samsung recently confirmed that it has sold 5 million of its lightweight Gear VR headsets to date, all of which run Oculus software.
