Ever since the RBI granted licenses to 11 companies to start payments banks in 2015 , we have seen three fully functioning, the latest one being Paytm. Vijay Sekhar Sharma, the founder, has recently raised 1.4 billion USD from <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">Softbank</keyword> and Alibaba. In a release addressed to media, Sharma said, “"RBI has given us an opportunity to create a new kind of banking model in the world. None of our deposits will be converted into risky assets." While <keyword id="6385180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-Payments-Bank">Airtel Payments Bank</keyword> offered free talktimes, Paytm Payments Bank defines itself as the first bank with zero online fees for any transaction, which includes virtual debit card, <keyword id="285745" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEFT">NEFT</keyword>, IMPS. The only things that would be charged are cheque books, demand draft and debit cards, which would be physical. In India, payments bank can collect deposits up to Rs 1 lakh, has to invest 75% of its deposits in government securities, can offer different payment solutions, but can't lend. This comes to the bigger question how would they make money? Shubhankar Bhattacharya, venture partner at Kae Capital told The Economic Times, “For starters, payments banks can't issue loans or credit cards, and are modelled to cover the cost of capital through transaction charges on their payment product. Therefore, payments banks need to find other avenues to improve the yield on the assets made available to them from their depositors.” "Payments banks are more likely to cross-sell services that are being offered on their platform," added Bhattacharya. “They need very high volume to start churning profits. Wallet was the game of boys. Payments banks is the game of men," <keyword id="3849285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashita-Aggarwal">Ashita Aggarwal</keyword>, head of marketing, SP Jain Institute of Management and Research told ET. The 11 entites, which were granted licenses last year, Tech Mahindra, Cholamandalam Investment and <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> Company and a consortium of Dilip Shanghvi, IDFC Bank and <keyword id="3371770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telenor-Financial-Services">Telenor Financial Services</keyword> have already given up on the venture. It’s for us to wait and watch how Sharma makes Paytm Payments Bank successful like the mobile wallet.

How viable are payments banks in India?

 Kingfisher Airlines has posted losses of over Rs 820 crores ending December 2013 and one has not seen any steps from the group to resolve the situation in any manner. The Indian who posted the biggest gain in wealth over the past year is reported to be Dhiraj Rajaram, the 40-year-old founder of Bengaluru-based analytics firm <keyword id="6713503" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mu-Sigma">Mu Sigma</keyword> are some to state. Rajaram saw his personal fortune rise six-fold, to Rs 17,800 crore. His ranking has risen 127 spots to No. 38, according to the Hurun India Rich List for 2015. Most of the new-age startup founders are also exceptional in that they are self-made; 85% of those in the list are part of family businesses.
 

	"Despite the weakening of the stock market and the rupee, the Hurun India Rich List expanded by 76 entrepreneurs, showing the resilience and dynamism of the Indian private sector," said Anas Rahman Junaid, India head, Hurun Report. The Hurun Report was started by researcher Rupert Hoogewerf. The first report, in 1999, was on the rich in China, and Hoogewerf has since been regularly bringing out a China rich list. The India initiative began two years ago.
 At the top, Mukesh Ambani was followed by Dilip Sanghvi of Sun Pharma, S P Hinduja &amp; family of the Hinduja Group, Shiv Nadar of HCL, and Pallonji Mistry of the <keyword id="261354" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shapoorji-Pallonji-Group">Shapoorji Pallonji Group</keyword>. For the first time, Wipro chairman <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> fell off the top 5 rankings. Ride-hailing platform <keyword id="6354720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> on Thursday said it has appointed Mike <keyword id="6585757" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="rake">Rake</keyword> as non-executive Chairman and <keyword id="11292176" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="leon-daniels">Leon Daniels</keyword> as an independent non-executive director to the Ola UK Board. Rake and Daniels will draw on deep experience across the private and public sectors to provide the strongest possible oversight, corporate governance, and strategic counsel to Ola as it continues to grow and scale, Ola said in a statement. They will join Balasubrahmanyam Vijay Juturi, alongside Marc Rozendal (<keyword id="24973" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="managing-director">Managing Director</keyword>, Ola UK) and Karl Lutzow (Operations Director, Ola UK) on the board, it added. Mukul Arora of SAIF Partners believes that along with the unique perspective of running a business, a founder-turned-investor must bring more to the table. “That is 20% of what is needed to be an investor, so if founders come in with a mindset that there is an 80% left for which I will have to unlearn and relearn, they can become good investors. Just being a founder is not sufficient, you have to be hardworking and hungry to learn a lot,” said Arora. He added that while in the US there have been many such examples, the Indian startup ecosystem is not yet mature. Being a founder, one also tends to have the habit of creating new products. A VC enables products and not creates them. That is an understanding a founder needs to have before turning into a VC, adds Singhal. “Founders can have strong viewpoints but as an investor it’s also important to have flexibility,” said Singhal.
