As per the report, this is largely being driven by a significant increase in demand worldwide, which has coincided with more available flights, better international openness, and increased interest and investment in natural and cultural attractions. However, the report painted that the global recovery has been mixed. While 71 of the 119 ranked economies increased their index scores since 2019. Although the sector has moved past the shock of the global health crisis, it continues to deal with other external challenges, from growing macroeconomic, geopolitical and environmental risks, to increased scrutiny of its sustainability practices. In addition, labour shortages are ongoing, and air route capacity, capital investment, productivity and other sector supply factors have not kept up with the increase in demand. This imbalance, worsened by global inflation, has increased prices and service issues. Out of the top 30 index scorers in 2024, 26 are high-income economies, 19 are based in Europe, seven are in Asia-Pacific, three are in the Americas and one (the United Arab Emirates) is in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). The top 10 countries in the 2024 edition are the United States, Spain, Japan, France, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Italy and Switzerland. The results highlight that high-income economies generally continue to have more favourable conditions for travel and tourism development. This is helped by conducive business environments, dynamic labour markets, open travel policies, strong transport and tourism infrastructure, and well-developed natural, cultural and non-leisure attractions. "It's essential to bridge the divide between differing economies' ability to build a strong environment for their travel and tourism sector to thrive," said Iis Tussyadiah, Professor and Head of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey. "The sector has big potential to foster prosperity and mitigate global risks, but that potential can only be fully realized through a strategic and inclusive approach." If managed strategically, the travel and tourism sector - which has historically represented 10 per cent of global GDP and employment - has the potential to emerge as a key contributor to growth, it said. Indian markets under pressure as global rate cuts stir uncertainty, new report says

Ahead of the annual budget presentation, an India-centric top US strategic and business advocacy group has urged Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> to simplify and rationalise direct and indirect taxation system in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, a move it believes would increase the confidence of global investors and yield greater foreign direct investment. Direct taxes can be in the form of income tax, capital gains tax or securities transaction tax, while indirect taxes such as GST, Customs Duty or VAT are levied on all end-consumers to buy any goods or services. "Rationalise corporate tax rates for foreign companies," said the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (<keyword id="4839889" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="usispf" source="Orion">USISPF</keyword>) in its submission to the finance ministry ahead of the annual budget presentations on February 1. It said that the rate for foreign companies, including banks be reduced to bring parity and sought to rationalise tax for new manufacturing companies. <keyword id="16275339" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="urging-india" source="Orion">Urging India</keyword> to simplify capital gain tax reforms, USISPF sought harmonising holding periods and rates of different instruments. "Reiterate India's commitment to the global tax deal," it said and urged the Union Finance Minister to extend the concessional tax regime to Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) from investment in securities. USISPF has also suggested tax incentives to specific sectors like renewable energy and R&amp;D investment in the health sector. Among the Forum's recommendations include advocating for a stable and predictable tax environment, improving the ease of doing business environment, rationalisation of the cost of doing business, and rationalisation of tax rates and tariffs. On indirect taxes, the USISPF sought clarification on customs duty exemptions provided to oil and natural gas companies, reduction in customs duty rates for x-ray machines from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent and providing customs duty exemption on all items imported by specified research and development units. USISPF urged the finance minister to roll back the customs duty increase on nutritional products considering the importance and significance of the product and encourage the availability of scientifically designed nutritional food in India. Among its recommendations on customs tariffs and duties and customs, processes include addressing ambiguities in the customs tariff act on telecom products, an extension of concessional customs duty to advanced biofuel projects and strengthening the process on the ground with respect to trade facilitation schemes like CAROTAR and Faceless Assessment. The term friend-shoring is used for the act of moving supply networks to nations with little chance of political unrest disrupting them. Notably, the Hinrich Foundation is an organisation that works to advance mutually beneficial and sustainable global trade through research and education programs that build understanding and leadership in global trade. National leaders no longer seem to believe in the logic of free trade as the world economy recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, especially when it causes the concentration of essential supply chains of crucial businesses in certain geopolitically hazardous geographies. Given the recent economic liberalisation measures in India, the expanding alliance between New Delhi and Washington, and India's position as the "pharmacy of the world," the pharmaceuticals sector, whose significance was increased by the pandemic, is a good possibility. However, the indigenous industry in India confronts difficulties because of inadequate regulatory monitoring, reliance on China for component supplies, and problems emerging from environmental damage related to their manufacturing. China has provided considerable economic support to the pharmaceutical industry over the past two decades, while the US has brought a knife to a gunfight by not applying industrial policy planning to its pharmaceutical and API businesses to a comparable amount. She said the US needed to improve its hardware and encourage competition among vendors.This is especially important, Neuberger said, as the US is engaged in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-government-approves-more-ai-models-rivals-us-report-2024-1">tech arms race</a> with China and Chinese telecom companies, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-is-firing-back-again-in-china-chip-semiconductor-wars-2024-3">Huawei</a>. Neuberger said.The telecommunications industry affects valuable information belonging to American companies and the government. It's also often managed and updated remotely, so it needs to be secure, Neuberger said."Telecom systems are so complex today," she said. "If you don't have confidence in those vendors, it's really hard to trust it."Neuberger highlighted some of the government initiatives for investing in 5G, including the Biden administration's $1.5 billion <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ntia.gov/program/innovation-fund">Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund</a>, which aims to bring <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nist.gov/open-radio-access-network-open-ran">open standards</a> into telecommunications and advance innovation in the wireless industry."What we've been trying to do is bring in innovation to bring in new players to allow our traditional strength in software to come to bear," Neuberger said.Grants from these these types of funds have helped US allies. They have allowed global telecom companies, including those from India, Japan, and Europe, to test new technology together and learn from each other. The US has also been building a telecom partnership with India, as it's one of the biggest telecom markets in the world, along with the US and China.In November, the White House launched its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/National-Spectrum-Strategy.pdf">National Spectrum Strategy</a> to promote innovation in wireless technologies. Neuberger said this included industries such as connected vehicles and defense, adding that these technologies allowed the US to aid Ukraine when Russia struck down its electric lines."As we think about how we lead in these connected industries in the future, we have to think about creative ways to use spectrum more efficiently and differently," Neuberger said.
