The California-based search giant introduced a UPI-based payment system in India back in 2017 as ‘Tez’, which was rebranded to ‘Google Pay’ a year later. Google Pay is a key player in the digital payments space which offers enhanced fraud protections. The digital payment platform uses machine learning algorithms to prevent scams and displays an explicit warning if a user receives a payment request from a fraudster or someone who is not in the contacts list of the user. Besides this, the app uses screen lock, PIN, fingerprint, or password that you use to lock your phone. According to a <a href="https://www.pwc.in/assets/pdfs/consulting/financial-services/fintech/payments-transformation/the-indian-payments-handbook-2021-2026.pdf">PwC report</a>, Indian digital payments witnessed a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23% and it is expected to increase to 217 billion (21,700 crore) transactions by FY26. The report also states that the UPI payments will likely continue to dominate the digital payments space. Google Pay Dos and Don’ts to keep fraudsters away in 2022

This growth will be accelerated by the increasing use of alternative payment methods, such as digital wallets and BNPL (buy-now-pay-later), which are creating new fraud risks. In FY23 (till August) UPI recorded over 30 billion transactions worth Rs 51.74 trillion. Online payment fraud includes losses across the sales of digital goods, physical goods, money transfer transactions and banking, as well as purchases like airline ticketing. Fraudster attacks can include phishing, business email compromises and socially engineered fraud. "To combat this fraud, e-commerce merchants must implement simple steps such as address verification, combined with risk-based scoring on transactions, which will allow merchants to best mitigate the massive fraud threats present," suggested research author <keyword id="12585121" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nick-maynard" source="Orion">Nick Maynard</keyword>. The report recommended that fraud prevention vendors focus on building platforms providing AI-powered risk-based scoring, which can be payment method agnostic, to best suit changing market conditions. Additionally, the research found that the potential for fraud with BNPL is a major risk going forward. Given the delayed nature of BNPL payments, fraudsters can make several illegitimate payments using stolen card details before the fraudulent activity is identified, creating significant risk. When the user enters this information, the information is sent to the scammer, who can use this information to steal money or commit identity theft. In some instances, these QR codes also prompt the victim to enter their UPI PIN to send money. When the user enters their UPI PIN, the scammer receives it and can use it to steal money. Not just this, QR codes may also include malicious files, which are automatically downloaded when the user scans the code. Quishing on the rise – Be alert while scanning payment QR codes

<ul><li>India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has issued a notice alerting online payment systems to be careful of an app called ‘AnyDesk’. </li><li>The app can allegedly access confidential user data to conduct fraudulent financial transactions through apps on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). </li><li>129 banks currently used UPI in India overseeing transactions amounting to ₹1 trillion. </li></ul>As online transactions have boomed in India, so have the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-corporates-are-not-prepared-to-take-on-cyber-attacks-report/articleshow/68041682.cms">instances</a> of financial fraud. In its most recent notice India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has warned banks and payment system operators to be vary of an app called ‘AnyDesk’ that’s being used by fraudsters to gain access to confidential user data.

 The circular highlights how once ‘AnyDesk’ has the requisite permissions, the app allegedly uses its access the confidential data to carry out fraudulent transactions using apps that are based on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). India’s lax cybersecurity Earlier this year, on January 10, the RBI <a href="https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=11452&amp;Mode=0">issued</a> a notice alerting developers of payments apps in India to introduce more stringent controls. Even the National Payments Commision of India (NPCI), the umbrella organisation that oversees all retail payments, issued a similar notice asking developers to be wary of what kind of data is being accessed on user’s devices. Indian banks aren’t safe from the onslaught either. Cosmos bank, a Pune-based Indian bank, was <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/banking/finance/banking/cosmos-banks-server-hacked-rs-94-crore-siphoned-off-in-2-days/articleshow/65399477.cms">robbed</a> of ₹940 million because hackers were able to clone Visa and RuPay debit cards last year. The bank assured customers that the core banking system was safe and it was only the payments gateway that was hacked.

India’s central bank tells digital wallets to avoid this app linked to compromising confidential user data

<ul><li><keyword id="2736678" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unified-payments-interface">Unified Payments Interface</keyword> (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>) 2.0, <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s cashless payment interface, was launched by the <keyword id="6383340" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> on Thursday.</li><li>It’s an update to the original UPI platform that the Indian government launched back in January 2016. </li><li>The update will be rolled out to users through the interface’s 11 partner banks.</li></ul>India’s public cashless payment platform, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), announced the rollout of UPI 2.0 on Thursday. While the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) facilitated with the development of the app, the National Payments Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword>) is the organisation in-charge of retail payments in the country. The primary function of the UPI app is to serve as the middle-man for around-the-clock money transfers from one bank account to another without having to disclose the beneficiary’s bank account details. Having been in the works for nearly six months, the updated version has features that add to the authenticity of payments while others contribute towards added convenience. Here are some changes to watch out for:

No more mismatch between payment requests and actual billing The original UPI platform, while having its merits, ran into a bit of a snag when there were complaints of actual bills on matching payment requests. UPI 2.0 attempts to solve that problem by adding the bill to the payment request itself. Users can verify the invoice and cross-check the vendor’s credentials before making the actual payment. 2. <keyword id="6804466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="verified-qr-code">Verified QR code</keyword> In the past, there have been a few instances of QR code tampering where customers have made payments, but rather than it going to the vendor, the payments end up in a fraudulent account. What UPI 2.0 has put in place allows customers to check whether or not a particular merchant is verified, and in case they’re not, the user will get a notification to alert of possible fraud. 3. One time mandates One time mandates are like the post-paid for merchant payments. Within the new interface, users can pre-authorise a payment that will be executed at a later date as specified. It works both ways, for consumers and merchants alike. 4. Overdraft account In the past, users could only link their current and savings accounts to the app. But, UPI 2.0 allows for overdraft accounts as well. Not just in a filtered way, but with full bells and whistles that are associated with overdraft accounts. Using Immediate Payments Service (IMPS), the UPI process can be thought of like an email ID for making payments. Being faster than NEFT and without the time constraints, UPI is essentially an advanced version of the IMPS. It cuts down on costs and the effort associated with making payments. Just as UPI was a push towards enhancing the <keyword id="6358577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments">digital payments</keyword> culture in India, UPI 2.0 looks to encourage that even further. That being said, the adoption of cashless payments, though on the rise, shows the disparity in its penetration across the country.

UPI 2.0: Here’s what you need to know

In a bid to bolster the safety and security of <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> and enhance regulatory frameworks, the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) unveiled a series of proposals aimed at fostering innovation, inclusivity, and efficiency in the financial ecosystem. These initiatives, announced by RBI Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword>, signify the central bank's commitment to fortifying India's digital infrastructure and promoting a conducive environment for financial transactions. One of the key announcements made by Governor Das pertained to the establishment of a Digital Payments <keyword id="21971766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intelligence-platform" source="keywords">Intelligence Platform</keyword>. This platform, leveraging advanced technologies, aims to mitigate payment <keyword id="19898489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fraud" source="keywords">fraud</keyword> risks and enhance the safety of digital transactions. According to the annual report released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 30, there was a significant surge in the number of financial frauds reported by banks, increasing by 166 per cent year-on-year in the financial year 2023-24 to reach 36,075 cases. This figure starkly contrasts with the 13,564 cases reported in the previous fiscal year, FY23. Despite the notable rise in the number of fraud cases, there was a substantial decrease in the total amount involved in these incidents. The amount of money associated with total bank frauds plummeted by 46.7 per cent year-on-year in the financial year 2023-24, totaling Rs 13,930 crore. In comparison, the amount recorded in FY23 stood at Rs 26,127 crore. RBI has proposed a revision of the limit of bulk deposits for Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) and Small Finance Banks (SFBs). This move, aimed at enhancing flexibility and aligning with evolving market dynamics, underscores the RBI's commitment to fostering a conducive environment for the banking sector. Currently, banks have the discretion to offer differential rates of interest on bulk deposits based on their requirements and Asset-Liability Management (ALM) projections. The existing bulk deposit limit for SCBs (excluding Regional Rural Banks) and SFBs, set at 'Single Rupee term deposits of Rs 2 crore and above,' was established in 2019. However, following a comprehensive review, the RBI has proposed to revise this definition to 'Single Rupee term deposits of Rs 3 crore and above' for SCBs and SFBs. In addition to the proposed revision for SCBs and SFBs, the RBI has also suggested defining the bulk deposit limit for Local Area Banks (LABs) as 'Single Rupee term deposits of Rs 1 crore and above,' mirroring the criteria applicable to Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). In a bid to enhance the convenience and efficiency of digital payments, RBI has unveiled plans to expand the e-mandate framework to include recurring payments for Fastag, National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), and similar services. The current UPI Lite service permits customers to load their UPI Lite wallets with up to Rs 2000/- and conduct transactions of up to Rs 500 from the wallet. To enhance the seamless usage of UPI Lite for customers, and in response to feedback from various stakeholders, it is suggested to integrate UPI Lite into the e-mandate framework. This integration would introduce an auto-replenishment feature for UPI Lite wallets, automatically refilling the wallet balance when it falls below a predetermined threshold set by the customer. Since the funds remain under the customer's control (transferring from their account to the wallet), it is proposed to eliminate the need for additional authentication or pre-debit notifications. Relevant guidelines pertaining to this proposal will be issued shortly. RBI announces digital payments intelligence platform to check online frauds

"While we've achieved significant scale in <keyword id="20377974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-inclusion" source="keywords">financial inclusion</keyword>, penetration remains a challenge, with only 25% of payment users being women, and even fewer in semi-urban and rural areas. Many women's mobile numbers are not linked to their bank accounts, hindering their participation," Bansal said. He added, "Yet, data shows women are 50% less prone to fraud and are highly loyal and engaged users. As an ecosystem, we must prioritize personalized, assisted services and continuous engagement across all channels. The NPCI's UPI platform has already revolutionized India's payment landscape, with UPI transactions soaring from Rs 920 million (USD 11.08 million) in FY 2017-18 to Rs 83750 million (USD 1.01 billion) in FY 2022-23, reflecting a staggering CAGR of 147 per cent. The value of UPI transactions reached INR 80.79 trillion (USD 96,287) across approximately 55.66 billion transactions in the first four months of FY 2024-25. Of the 536 million women aged 15 years and older in India, 37 per cent report using mobile internet, making the addressable market for UPI solutions among women around 200 million strong.

Over the past one year, UPI or United Payments Interface, India’s burgeoning digital payments bet, has seen exponential growth and taking home the biggest shares in the market are players like PhonePe, Paytm and <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword>. And that’s also where the current market leader PhonePe has been winning the game. “Paytm has traditionally been much stronger in the P2M (peer to merchants) segment than the P2P (peer to peer) segment, as the usage of UPI starts to become more and more for commerce, that is where Paytm has gained. Google Pay has been a more consumer app, while PhonePe has been both. Ultimately, how much P2P payment will happen, what drives payments is commerce,” Shishir Mankad, head of financial services, Praxis Global Alliance told Business Insider. Narendra Yadav, Vice President, Paytm told Business Insider that P2M transactions are 70% of Paytm’s overall transactions, whereas for UPI overall that share is around 40%. But Yadav also said that the company’s dominance in merchants is not yet completely visible in UPI. “Our focus has been on merchants – online or offline. Whenever merchant transactions are increasing, Paytm will benefit. And after COVID-19, merchants have been moving to digital transactions where Paytm is also seeing huge growth,” he said. However, Gupta believes that when compared to the likes of Google Pay the reasons are beyond the company. “The reason lies with banks and not Google Pay. Paytm has an advantage because it's a payments bank, so it controls the entire stack which basically means a lower failure rate. Having said that Google Pay works with three or four major banks and failure rates aren’t just dependent on banks but also NPCI’s UPI stack,” Arnav Gupta, analyst at Forrester told Business Insider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Adopting new users in UPI" comment="subhead" text="Adopting new users in UPI">Adopting new users in UPI</cmsannotation> The acceleration in UPI also means new users and new payers being added to the ecosystem. And players have also been spending on marketing to get these users. Transactional volumes are always increasing, and with that the average transaction ticket size is also increasing. Digital adoption by the consumers is on the higher side especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of new users and new payers were added to the ecosystem,” said Gupta. The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company had recently said that it processes 1.2 billion transactions in a month. In January 2021, Walmart-owned PhonePe had said it processes over a billion monthly transactions. “PhonePe now has more than 275 million lifetime registered users, which essentially means that one in every five Indians now has PhonePe. Our monthly transaction count is up nearly 100% year-over-year. Our monthly active users (MAU) has crossed 110 million monthly users with a very healthy 97% monthly customer repeat rate. Even in terms of monetary value, our annualised total payment volume (TPV) run rate has crossed the $300 billion mark,” PhonePe’s chief executive Sameer Nigam had said during Walmart’s fourth quarter earnings. Meanwhile, Paytm knows it has a long way to go in the UPI ecosystem. The $16 billion startup has also announced, on Monday, that its UPI handles have been approved by India stock regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India for users to pay for IPOs. And this is just one of the tricks that Paytm is using to leverage its other businesses. “Paytm has many businesses, and if they put their might behind this it will surely yield results. While in UPI, Paytm is a distant third, if you look at Paytm wallet to wallet transactions that’s very large but doesn’t get recorded as it doesn’t enter any settlement,” said Mankad. Issues related to data privacy and rising <keyword id="20127272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-frauds" source="keywords">online frauds</keyword> are emerging as significant hurdles in the growth of e-commerce in India, said the <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Economic Survey" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Economic Survey">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-24 tabled in Parliament on Monday. Citing third-party data, the survey said that the e-commerce industry in India is expected to cross USD 350 billion by 2030 and called for the need to educate users on the safe use of e-commerce platforms. "The rise of e-commerce is constrained by inadequate skills required for online selling, such as cataloguing. <keyword id="22505774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-privacy-issues" source="keywords">Data privacy issues</keyword> and increasing online fraud have turned out to be the most significant hurdle in the growth of e-commerce in India. It becomes imperative to educate users on the safe use of e-commerce platforms," the survey said. The survey mentioned that India's e-commerce market has gained significant momentum during the past few years, owing to technological advancements, evolving new-age business models coupled with government initiatives like the Digital India program, UPI, One District - One Product (ODOP), Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), new foreign trade policy, easing of FDI limits and Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules 2021. It has identified data privacy and <keyword id="19906883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity" source="keywords">cybersecurity</keyword> as critical concerns in the <keyword id="22505776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digitisation-of-services" source="keywords">digitisation of services</keyword> in the country and called for adopting strong security measures, compliance with privacy regulations, and innovation, among others. "To further embrace technology with confidence, ensuring the adoption of strong security measures, compliance with privacy regulations, and fostering innovation in security technologies are essential," the survey noted. The Chief of National Cyber Coordination Centre, Dr Rajesh Pant, at an ASSOCHAM event said that the government is looking to implement multi-factor authentication to improve the security of digital transactions in the country. As per a <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/the-billion-standard-digital-payments-bank-accounts-6254962/">report</a>, 1.3 billion UPI transactions were recorded in January 2020. With the increasing number of transactions, it is also important to increase the security of digital transactions. Govt to move towards multi-factor authentication At present, UPI and payment apps like PhonePe and Google Pay use two-factor authentication as mandated by RBI. Two-factor authentication involves two factors to grant access to a system. Most apps use one-time-passwords (OTPs) in addition to passwords to authenticate users. The government is now looking to improve this with the introduction of multi-factor authentication. In addition to requiring a password to sign in, the payment apps may also be mandated to add an additional layer of security in the form of facial recognition, Iris scan and checking the location to ensure security of digital payments. While facial recognition is easy, it will not be easy to implement iris scan on smartphones. While Samsung offers an iris scanner on a few of its flagship devices, this feature is not available on other smartphones. At present, some banking apps already require the user to enable the location on the smartphone to complete a transaction. This helps in finding the person who initiated the transaction in case fraud is detected. This should not be hard to implement on other apps as well.
