<ul><li><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> successfully tested the Feihong-98 (FH-98) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Inner Mongolia region on Tuesday. </li><li>With the capacity to carry 1.5 tons expanding along 15 cubic meters, this is the ‘largest <keyword id="6970585" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="transport-drone">transport drone</keyword>’ in the world. </li><li>While it’s a commercial drone, there is potential for it to be applied in the situations of natural disasters and disaster relief.</li></ul>Drones are the cutting edge of technology but every generation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are different. The <a href="http://innermongolia.chinadaily.com.cn/baotou/2018-10/18/c_283049.htm">newest development</a> comes from China where they’ve turned their Shifei Y5B indigenously developed transport plane into the Feihong-98 (FH-98) unmanned transport aircraft.

 And with a maximum capacity of 5.25 tons as well as 15 cubic meters as its disposal for storage, it’s the largest commercial drone in the world. According to China Daily, the drone was successfully tested in North China's Inner Mongolia region on Tuesday. Developed in collaboration between the China Academy of Aerospace Electronics Technology (CAAET) and SF Express, it’s not a military drone, but meant for for commercial use. The main intent of the drone is to make deliveries, but with FH-98’s potential, the drone could have wider applications. And, here’s why: The drone has a range of 1,200kms, that’s nearly how far Mumbai is on the western coast of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> from Puducherry on the eastern coast. On top of that, it can carry a maximum payload of 1.5 tonnes (3,300 pounds) or 3 average sized polar bears. And when on the move, the drone can travel at a speed of 180 km/hr. This means that in emergency situations or when natural calamities strike, this drone can actually be used to transport much needed supplies for disaster relief. The added benefit is that since it only needs a simple runway to take off and land, its infrastructural requirements for efficiency aren’t extensive. Though it’s unlikely that the plane will rule over the skies anytime soon, the drone is a part of China’s ‘Made in China 2025’ program. The program is similar to India’s ‘Make in India’ policy that focuses of expanding they country’s manufacturing base.

China transforms its transport plane into the largest transport drone in the world

When Didi Chuxing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-merges-with-didi-chuxing-2016-7" target="_blank">merged with Uber China</a> in a $35 billion mega-merger last August, it created a partnership between the two biggest ride-hailing companies in the world. But it also further complicated the already interconnected world of ride-hailing, tech, and <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>. It called into question the stability of the global <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-didi-ola-grab-anti-uber-alliance-launches-2016-4" target="_blank">anti-Uber alliance</a> - a coalition made up of Didi, Ola, Grab, and Lyft to combat Uber's impending world dominance in the ride-hailing arena - and made bedfellows out of tech giants, automakers, and venture capitalists. Now, as many of these companies embark on driverless car technology, those bedfellows are also becoming competitors in the same arena. This is the tangled future of tech and transportation

A foundational issue in the political economy is what is the role of the state? While protection and safety against aggression, both from external and internal, seem to be the legitimate and core principles behind the formation of states, public services like education and healthcare are often now conceived as being the responsibility of the state. But, what about transportation/ mobility?, is it the responsibility of the state or is it best left to private providers. This is a question that societies have been grappling with for quite sometime now. 
 
In India, the transportation model is mixed and (some would say mixed up) with the state ensuring the basic infrastructure like roads and railway tracks and even airports and ports in most cases. Services over these are provided by both government and the private sector. Two recent debates over transportation have made headlines but have rarely been understood from a holistic viewpoint. 
 
The first of these was the odd-even rule in the capital, brought to reduce the negative externality of air pollution. Many people have been very skeptical about how the plan is to get implemented. 
 
Also, the lack of end-to-end connectivity, women safety, and enforceability are cited as major challenges to the rule. Experts contend that the record of these types of rules has not been very positive in other countries that have had similar rules. In addition, several people opine that before making these rules, it is a must to improve the existing transportation infrastructure within the city and to have cheap and convenient public transport. Also, alternative solutions like increasing ethanol content can be effective at the same time causing lesser inconvenience to common people. 
 
Another problem is with respect to India's lack of solution-oriented approach to mobility options within a city. This is where the need is to look at integrated urban mobility solutions for people residing in cities. Often the initial part or the ending part becomes exorbitantly expensive for people who live away from public transport systems. This is where there is a need for improvement both in terms of cost and convenience. 
 
The second major thing which hit the headlines in the recent times was the metro rail project that is an inter-city project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A lot of debate has taken place regarding the cost dynamics of the proposed project that is estimated to cost close to Rs 70000 crore. If escalations are added, the project is expected to cost close to Rs 98000 crore. Out of these, Rs 70000 crore a bulk of the costs, i.e., Rs 50000 crore is expected to be civil costs that will go to Indian companies. 
 
The project is at an advanced stage with Japan agreeing to provide India with more than three-fourth of the loan at a concessional rate of 0.1 percent and moratorium period of 15 years and a payback period of 50 years. It is one of the best deals India has had regarding cost and time, even from Japan, which reflects the depth of the Indo-Japanese relationship. The train technology is second to none with respect to safety. It has not had a single causality in 50 years of operation. 
 
The crucial question to ask, therefore, is not if a high-speed technology is good or not but can India's existing rail infrastructure be upgraded to improve travel times? And if so, at what cost? Travel time improvement requires not just track up-gradation but also an improvement in capacity utilization. With already overburdened capacity on the rail network, is it possible to improve speed is a crucial question to ask and answer by rail authorities. And if it is not is it not wise to upgrade to better technology with proposed high-speed tracks? 
 
Over the next few decades, India must find solutions that are visionary but also pragmatic as more people live in urban and semi-urban areas. The travel times can drastically improve with newer technologies in rails and even in automobiles. But as a nation, we must look to find solutions that solve the pressing problems of our times like vehicular pollution, availability of public transport with public consultation and seeing if better alternative solutions exist. But once a decision is made Indians must all support it to take India ahead.

But the fixation of de-ownership and utilization rates overestimates the degree to which consumers in affluent regions want to do away with the cars and trucks.In the US and China, the two global auto markets that have seen the best growth - in the case if the US, growth and recovery - since the financial crisis, vehicle ownership has been booming. Some of these markets have seen flattening sales or trimmed expectations for growth, but no one seems all that hung up on the limited utilization of the pricey car they just bought. It a sign of affluence, after all, that you can afford to buy a car and use it only when convenient. An acceptable cost of doing business, if you will, as you get richer.The trends that Morgan Stanley cites are intellectually intriguing and worthy of discussion and debate, but they run so counter to the current state of affairs that you'd need to have an abnormally long investment timeframe to even considering betting on them paying off.What's more likely is that traditional auto sales, especially in Europe, will dominate economic activity in transportation. New Delhi, Jan 30 () The government is planning to come out with a new transport policy, that will focus on innovation and reforms in the country's public transport system and will also have provisions for financial support for such initiatives, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.
 The minister also urged State Transport Corporations to switch to alternative fuels like CNG, LNG and bio-fuel like ethanol to save costs and reduce India's dependence on crude import which amounts to a massive Rs 7 lakh crore per annum.
 "Within a month, a new transport policy will be declared. We will promote new innovations and research and there will be provisions for financial support to players who want to bring new technology and innovation," Gadkari said at International Conference and Exhibition on Public Transport Innovation 2020 at Manekshaw Centre here.
 The Road Transport, Highways and MSME Minister said, the policy is being designed in such a fashion that it will focus on innovation and reforms and all obstacles on the way have already been removed.
 "All clearances will be there for those showing innovation and research," he said and called upon State Road Transport Corporations to switch to alternative fuels for change in cost dynamics and promoting pollution free transport.
 "Fuel change results in cost economics change," the minister said adding diesel buses can be converted into CNG-powered buses with a cost of barely Rs 3 lakh.
 "CNG can be used for school buses and city buses while LNG can be used for long-route buses. Conversion of diesel buses into LNG costs Rs 8 lakh," he said.
 He further said that "corporations should use alternative fuel instead of diesel. Using LNG will result in savings to the tune of 60 per cent. The life of diesel buses is 9 years and CNG buses is 15 years. Public transport buses in India need to be developed on the pattern of European countries."
 He also urged them to come out with electric buses to reduce cost saying that manufactures were working fast in this direction.
 "I have not been able to deliver much in public transport space. The condition of the state transport corporations is not good and is specially in a very bad shape in rural areas. ... Fresh capital is needed here. Foreign agency funds among others should be sought. ...There is need for correction," the Minister said.
 He also called upon auto-makers to be "quality centric and not cost centric" saying this was one of the reasons people were going for imported buses and cars and added that people are ready to shell out more for quality services.
 The minister said that 22 green express highways are on the anvil including Rs one lakh crore Delhi-Mumbai express highway which will be completed in three years time.
 He said work on seven out of 22 projects have already started and added that a stretch of it will be developed as the country's first electric highway on pilot basis.
 "We are acquiring land on the sides of all new express highways. About 2,000 petrol pumps and gas stations will come up on these and revenue generated will come into the kitty of National Highways Authority of India. We will have Rs 2,000 crore income from these," he said.
 Asserting that there is no dearth of funds, the minister said that post FASTag system on national highways for electronic toll collection, the revenue per day has swelled to Rs 87 crore, from Rs 68 crore.
 Once the system is implemented totally, NHAI expects Rs 100 crore toll income per day and annual income will swell to Rs 10,000 crore, he said and added that NHAI's annual income from various sources was estimated at Rs 40,000 crore this year which will swell to Rs 1 Lakh crore in coming years.
 The minister said that his Ministries in the previous tenure had seen award of work worth Rs 17 lakh crore and this tenure will see award of Rs 15 lakh crore in the highways sector. NAM DRR

Transport Policy in a month; Focus will be on innovation, reforms in public transport: Gadkari

Chennai, Public sector major <keyword id="59700" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-india-ltd" source="Orion">Coal India Ltd</keyword> (CIL) has chalked out Rs 24,750 crore investment for eco-friendly transportation of coal on 61 first mile connectivity (FMC) projects. The three phased investment project when completed will have a combined capacity of 763.5 million ton per annum (MTPA), the company said. FMC projects involve transportation of coal in mechanized piped conveyors from production point to coal handling plants/silos with rapid loading system where coal is loaded directly into <keyword id="1060490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rail-wagons" source="Orion">rail wagons</keyword>. According to the company, 35 FMC projects under the first phase having 414.5 MTPA capacity account for Rs. 10,750 crores. Eight projects of 112 MTPA capacity are already operational. CIL is gearing up to commission 17 more projects of 178 MTPA by FY 2024 end. The rest 10 comprising 124.5 MTPA capacity are expected to be operative by FY 2025, the company said. The second and third phase projects account for nine and 17 respectively. While their respective evacuation capacities are 57 MTPA and 292 MTPA, the investments sequentially, would be about Rs 2,500 crore and Rs11,500 crore. Under the second phase five projects of 21.5 MTPA capacity under construction are expected to be commissioned by FY 2025. Remaining projects are in different stages of progress with tenders issued and bid documents under preparation. For the third phase, tenders have been floated for three projects of 65 MTPA capacity. Nine projects are to be executed through mine developers and operators. The third phase projects are anticipated to be commissioned by FY 2029. Total eco-friendly coal evacuation would go up to 914.5 MTPA when all the 61 projects become operational by FY 2029, including the earlier capacity of 151 MTPA. FMC projects offer benefits like suppression of dust pollution and carbon emissions and reduce the load on road transportation leading to safety. Other benefits include precise quantity and quality coal is loaded for consumers with minimal manual intervention.

Coal India to invest ₹24,750 crore on eco-friendly transportation

In the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/boston-marathon-explosion-photos-2013-4">aftermath of the explosions</a>, many of the city's <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> systems have shut down or limited service.
Marathon Monday is a major holiday in Boston, and many public transportation services were already operating on alternate schedules.
In a press conference earlier this afternoon, the Boston Fire Department recommended that people stay home, and that those staying in hotels should return to their hotels.
At the request of law enforcement, the <keyword id="137685" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="FAA">FAA</keyword> placed a temporary flight restriction over a portion of the city, barring aircraft within a three nautical mile radius, up to an altitude of 3,000 feet. That zone has since been reduced to a two natuical mile radius.
The FAA also briefly put a ground stop in place, halting flights into and out of Boston's Logan Airport, so it could chance the runway configuration. Flights have since resumed, it said in a statement.

According to the <a href="https://twitter.com/MassDOT">Mass. Department of Transit's (DOT) Twitter page</a>, several sections of Boston highways are closed, including Boston I-90 East exit 22 to Copley Sq and Huntington Av., and Wellesley Rte-128/I-95 exit 21.
As of 5:46 p.m. EST, service on the Green, Orance, and Red lines was resuming with "significant residual delays," <a href="http://www.mbta.com/rider_tools/transit_updates/?ttype=subway&amp;advistory=true&amp;route=Green+Line#advise">according to the MBTA</a>. Green Line service had been temporarily terminated earlier in the afternoon.
Park Street and Downtown Crossing had also reopened as of 5:46 PM, according to the MBTA.

He faced an array of well-known party figures during his campaign, including Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris of California, who's now the vice president-elect, Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and former Housing and Urban Development secretary Julián Castro, among others.However, Buttigieg became a breakout star of the campaign - <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/elections/results/primaries/democratic/iowa/">he won the Iowa caucus</a> in February 2020 and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-hampshire-results-democratic-primary-2020-live-vote-counts">finished a close second</a> to Sanders in the New Hampshire primary. His momentum was blunted with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-wins-the-south-carolina-democratic-primary-2020-2">Biden's overwhelming victory</a> in the South Carolina Democratic Primary later that month, though, as <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/pete-buttigieg-s-unfinished-business-south-bend-could-come-back-n1106026">his electoral weakness with Black voters</a>, a crucial part of the Democratic coalition, proved incredibly difficult to improve on in just a matter of weeks. "Like Beau, he has a backbone like a ramrod."It is widely expected that Buttigieg will run for president again at some point in the future, and running a federal agency would afford the Democratic politician with valuable management experience.On December 13, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/13/politics/pete-buttigieg-transportation-secretary/index.html">CNN first reported</a> that Buttigieg was being considered for the transportation role, with other candidates that reportedly included Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Gov. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island, and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.The current transportation secretary is Elaine Chao, a former labor secretary under then-President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. Chao, who is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, has served in the role since January 2017.Buttigieg's name also emerged for other Biden administration positions, including commerce secretary; US ambassador to the United Nations, a position <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jim-clyburn-biden-more-black-cabinet-administration-posts-democrats-voters-2020-11">that ultimately went to</a> the veteran diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield; and secretary of veterans affairs, which Biden filled <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-picks-former-obama-chief-of-staff-mcdonough-for-va-2020-12">with the nomination</a> of the former White House chief of staff Denis McDonough.

A convenient public <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> system is often a big part of what motivates people to move into particular neighborhoods and cities. 
And <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">according to Walk Score</a>, living near public transportation could have more benefits than you think. Homes within walking distance of transit systems <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">tend to outperform</a> others in the region, while commuters <a href="http://blog.walkscore.com/2014/01/new-ranking-of-best-u-s-cities-for-public-transit/">save money</a> when they don't have to pay to own and maintain a car. 
Research has even shown that living near good public transit <a href="http://www.theatlanticcities.com/commute/2013/09/living-near-good-transit-may-make-you-happier/6867/">could make you happier</a>. 
In their most recent ranking of the country's public transportation systems, Walk Score took data from 316 U.S. cities and thousands of neighborhoods and assigned a "Transit Score" to each. 
The Transit Scores consider frequency, type of route, and distance between stops, but system efficiency is notably missing. Scores were scaled out of a possible 100 points. 
Overall, Transit Scores for cities outside of the top five were surprisingly low, which raises questions about the state of the country's mass transportation in general. Older cities in the Northeast with established systems tended to score higher, though some West Coast cities investing in their transit also did relatively well in the rankings. 
<h3>10. Portland (Transit Score: 49.6) </h3>
Portland ranked in the top 10 due to its bus and light rail systems, but it's best known for being a <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/OR/Portland">haven for walkers</a> and cyclists. 
<h3>9. Los Angeles (Transit Score: 49.9)</h3>
Given Los Angeles' notorious traffic, it's pretty surprising to see this city coming in at the number 9 slot. However, the City of Angels <a href="http://www.metro.net/news/facts-glance/">has a huge bus ridership</a>, and <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-crenshaw-groundbreaking-20140122,0,677356.story#axzz2rpEHqnvn">billions of dollars</a> are being funneled into expanding the light-rail network. <a href="http://www.metro.net/news/facts-glance/"></a>
<h3>8. Baltimore (Transit Score: 56.9)</h3>
With 105 bus routes (including the new, green <a href="http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2014/jan/19/baltimore-american-history-your-fingertips/">Charm City Circulator</a>), plus light rail and ferry options, Baltimore is fairly easy to get around. 
<h3>7. Seattle (Transit Score: 57.3) </h3>
Extensive <a href="http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2013/11/capitol-hill-to-uw-light-rail-station-in-3-minutes-on-track-for-early-2016-opening/">plans to expand</a> the Sound Transit light rail line over the next couple of years means that Seattle's public transportation system will continue to improve. 
<h3>6. Chicago (Transit Score: 65.3)</h3>
Chicago's neighborhoods are connected by the "L" and Metra Rail systems. The Windy City is also friendly to walkers, earning a respectable <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/IL/Chicago">walkability score of 75</a>. 
<h3>5. Philadelphia (Transit Score: 67)</h3>
<a href="http://www.walkscore.com/PA/Philadelphia">SEPTA operates</a> a variety of different services, including buses, light rail, trolleys, and two subway lines, and the city is very walkable. 
<h3>4. Washington, D.C. (Transit Score: 70.4)</h3>
The Metrorail is <a href="http://www.apta.com/resources/statistics/Documents/FactBook/2013-APTA-Fact-Book.pdf">one of the busiest</a> rapid transit rail systems in the country. The city is also in the midst of a 6-year <a href="http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/docs/metrofacts.pdf">rebuilding program</a> that aims to improve the public transportation experience with new lighting, signs, and cars. 
<h3>3. Boston (Transit Score: 74.8)</h3>
Boston's Green Line is home to the <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/MA/Boston">oldest subway tunnel</a> in the country. Today's rail and bus lines are very convenient for commuters, plus it's rated the third most walkable city in the U.S. 
<h3>2. San Francisco (Transit Score: 80.5)</h3>
BART and MUNI will <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/CA/San_Francisco">get you around</a> the city, while CalTrain makes for an easy and pleasant commute from Silicon Valley.

It should be no surprise that the Big Apple comes in first on this list. Whether it's by <a href="http://www.walkscore.com/NY/New_York">subway, bus, or Citi Bike</a>, you're never more than a 10- or 15-minute walk from some form of public transportation in New York.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Gyro-X is a two-wheeled prototype car from 1967.</li><li>The vehicle uses a gyroscope under its hood to balance on two wheels.</li><li>At the time, it was believed by its developers to be the future of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>.</li></ul>This is the Lane Motor Museum, home of the one and only Gyro-X. The Gyro-X is a two-wheeled prototype vehicle. Developed in the 1960s, it was proposed as a solution for the future of transportation. The car balances on two wheels through the use of a gyroscope under its hood. A gyroscope is a device consisting of a rapidly spinning wheel or disk mounted so that its axis can turn freely in all directions. As the axis turns the wheel remains stationary. Gyroscopes can be used for measuring and maintaining orientation.Jeff Lane: So the car was developed in 1966 and 1967 by two very famous people, Tom Summers and Alex Tremulis.Alex Tremulis was a car designer well known for his work as Ford's styling director. Thomas Summers was a gyroscope expert who had integrated the technology into missile navigation systems during World War II.Jeff Lane: They both lived in the LA area and they became kind of friends. And they were always interested in developing a gyroscopically balanced car. So in '66 and '67 they got about three quarters of a million dollars together from investors to develop this car.The duo believed the Gyro-X could solve many of the issues presented by cars at the time.Jeff Lane: The car would be safer because it would be more stable. It wouldn't skid. It wouldn't slide. The car would also be more aerodynamic than a typical car of that era. Also it would be half the width of a normal car at that time and so you could put twice as many cars on existing roads.Unfortunately, the Gyro-X was deemed unstable, a result of its complex engineering that was still years away from being perfected. Tremulis and Summers' company Gyro Transport Systems would go bankrupt around 1970 before the vehicle ever reached production.Jeff Lane: So the way the gyro works is it's hydraulically driven off of the motor. So the motor sits right behind the front seat traversely. It's a mini-motor. There's a hydraulic pump that's on the engine. Then there is a hydraulic pump inside the sphere of the gyro. So when the motor runs it produces hydraulic pressure that spins the gyro up. It's a 17-inch flywheel. It weighs about 230 pounds. It spins inside of this sphere.When Jeff acquired the car, it was a shell of its former self. It was even missing its gyroscope, so a third wheel had been added to balance it out.Jeff Lane: We bought the car in 2011. A lot of the car was changed or just literally gone. So the car really needed a lot of work to be restored to what it was in 1967. It took six years. We knew from the beginning the most challenging part of doing the restoration would be building a gyro. We finally found a company from Italy that builds gyroscopes to stabilize large yachts from rocking when they're on the ocean. I would say we've gotten it to work as well as it ever did. So we've decided we're not going to drive it on public roads and we're not going to drive it over 30 mph because we've figured out that to make the car go highway speeds you have to redesign the whole car. And because this is such a historic car we don't want to destroy it and make it a car that it's not. We're trying to keep it close to what it was originally in 1967.

It also applies to air terminals, train stations, subway stations, seaports, and bus depots.The order does not apply to children under 2 years old and passengers may briefly remove their face masks to eat and drink. In September the CDC drafted an order that would have made it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/public-transport-mask-cdc-refuse-travel-2020-10">compulsory to wear masks on public transportation </a>but it was blocked by President Donald Trump's administration.
