Having taken risky initiatives, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Monday said India will have to be "alert and conscious" all the time but wondered with whom in <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> red lines can be drawn for conducting talks — with the elected government or "other actors".<br />
He also said that India would have to drive home the advantage on the fact that the world is now convinced of its views on terrorism from across the border by continuing to put forth its views on this matter.<br /> "The first thing is that with whom in Pakistan you will decide about laxman rekha — with an elected government or with other actors. So India will have to be alert and conscious all the time. There should not be any laxity and negligence," he told <keyword id="19470" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-now">Times Now</keyword>.<br />
Modi was asked what is the 'lakshman rekha' for holding talks Pakistan because in 2014 it was said it will be only talks between the two countries and not with Hurriyat, the second was 26/11 and now Pathankot.<br />
He said because of his consistent efforts like the visit to Lahore or inviting the Pakistan Prime Minister here that he no longer has to convince the world about India's stand on terrorism.<br />
"The world in one voice is praising India's role. Pakistan is finding it difficult to answer. The world is watching. If we remain an obstacle then we will have to convince the world that we are not like this.<br />
"Earlier the world would not buy India's theory on terrorism and sometime it would even treat it as out law and order problem. Now the whole world is accepting what India says on terrorism. It is accepting the loss caused to India by terorrism, the loss caused to humanity by terrorism. I believe India will have to continue putting forth its view on this matter," the prime minister said.

In a first for the country, a sitting Prime Minister- in this case,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=narendra+modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Narendra Modi </a>was giving an hour long one-on-one interview to an Indian journalist working at a private news channel.<br />
<br />
And, when that journalist turns out to be one other than fiery <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=arnab+goswami&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Arnab Goswami</a>, the self-appointed voice of the nation, things are bound to get interesting.<br />
<br /> But, unfortunately the interview didn’t quite have the fireworks that we were expecting and instead showed us something that we never thought was possible- a tame <keyword id="563971" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arnab-Goswami">Arnab Goswami</keyword>.<br />
<br />
There’s a running joke on the internet that basically implies that Arnab Goswami actually let Modi’s answers decide his questions. While we can’t vouch for that, we can certainly say that there was a stark difference in the Goswami we are used to seeing every night at 9 pm. (Where did the yelling go? Who knew Goswami could talk?)<br />
<br />
On Modi’s part, there was much that he said that we hadn’t already heard before, but our Prime Minister was indeed candid about certain issues.<br />

<strong>1.     </strong><strong>Our Prime Minister loves <keyword id="6358908" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raghuram-Rajan">Raghuram Rajan</keyword> as much as we do</strong><br />

RBI Governor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=RAGHURAM+RAJAN&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Raghuram Rajan</a> courted controversy when he announced that he would not be continuing as the RBI Governor for the second term. <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> Leader <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SUBRAMANIAN+SWAMY&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Subramanian Swamy</a>, who in the past had sought Rajan’s resignation and even wrote to the Prime Minister regarding the same, even took credit for Rajan’s exit.<br />
 <br />
What Indians were curious to know was PM Modi’s view on the matter, considering Swamy is from his own party. And, finally yesterday we had the answer-<br />

“I believe Raghuram Rajan’s patriotism is no less than any of ours. It will be doing injustice to him if one says that he will serve the country only if he is at a particular post. As much as I know Raghuram Rajan, whatever post he holds, wherever he is, he is someone who will continue to serve the country. He is someone who loves his country. Therefore, it's not like the nation won't get Raghuram Rajan's services, Raghuram Rajan is not that kind of a person. He is a person who loves the country. Those who speak such language are doing great injustice to him. My experience with him has been good. I appreciate the work he has done. And my good wishes will always be with him.”<br />

<strong>2.     </strong><strong>Modi also indirectly asked Subramanian Swamy from a public forum to shut it.</strong><br />
<br />
<br />
 <br /> To say that <keyword id="3449506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="subramian-swamy">Subramian Swamy</keyword> is controversy’s favourite child would be a gross understatement. But, Modi made it known on live television that he is not in favour of such behaviour.<br />
 <br />
"Whether it is someone from my party or not, I believe that such things (criticism of government officials) are inappropriate. The nation won't benefit from such publicity stunts. One should be more responsible while conducting themselves. Anyone who believes he is bigger than the system is wrong,"<br />
 <br />
<strong>3.     </strong><strong>Black money? What black money?</strong><br />

When Narendra Modi was elected as Prime Minister, he had basically announced that he would personally see to it that all the black money stashed away in foreign accounts would make their way back to India.<br />

But, one year later, Modi’s forgotten his promise to the nation and instead treated it as laughing matter.<br />

When Goswami asked him about the opposition’s claim that every Indian could get Rs 15 lakh in their bank account, this is what Modi had to say-<br />

"That is something the opposition raises during elections. Let them have some issue to talk about."<br />

Modi's personality shouldn't be a hindrance for the world to have faith in India. But for that unless I meet all those leaders and engage them them one to one, unless I speak to them frankly, they wouldn't know about India's head of state, so it was very important for me as I am not from a political family. I never had the opportunity to meet the world leaders earlier." <br />

<strong>5.     </strong><strong>Even Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India is scared of making jokes.</strong><br />

When Arnab Goswami tried asking the PM whether his US speech was impromptu or not, Modi without answering a clear Yes or No added that he has a humorous side but feels that it is risky to show that side these days.<br />

On being prodded, this is what he said-<br />

“In this era of 24/7 news channels, anybody can lift a small word and make a big issue out of it. But I will tell you the truth, the reason for the absence of humour in public life is this fear. I am myself scared . Earlier when I used to make speeches, I would make it so humourous but there would never be any issues.”<br />

So has our Prime Minister become more conscious now?<br />
 <br />
“I am not conscious. I am in fear, there is no humour left in public life because of this fear. Everyone is scared. I am in fear. My speeches used be humorous. I see it in Parliament, that humour is finished there too. It is a matter of concern.”<br />

Brown/Getty Images</a></span></p><p class="caption">Don't mention to 'f' word.</p></div><p></p></div></div><a href="https://www.markiteconomics.com/Survey/PressRelease.mvc/a15b3f1605e44519b9bcd3f02af444a3">On Tuesday morning, Markit released its latest set of data on the state of the UK's manufacturing sector,</a> and to say things didn't look good would be an understatement. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The sector slipped into contraction for the first time since 2013, hitting just 49.2, a shock fall from an already poor base last month, confirming fears about a coming crash in <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> manufacturing. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Generally speaking, Markit doesn't make grand proclamations and or use strong language about its data, but on Tuesday representatives from both Markit and CIPS, which jointly produced the survey, variously said that "An atmosphere of deep unease is building" and that the second quarter of 2015 "is likely to remain a bleak landscape" for manufacturing. That kind of language is pretty unusual, and is a handy illustrator of just how scary things are for the industry right now. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the lead up to Britain's June referendum on its membership of the European Union, uncertainty is predominating in almost everything people do. The Bank of England has already warned that it will be treading more carefully when it comes to monetary policy ahead of the referendum <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/minutes/Documents/mpc/pdf/2016/apr.pdf">saying that it is </a>"l</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">ikely to react more cautiously to data news over this period than would normally be the case."</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Markit</span></p><p class="caption">Manufacturing has jumped off a cliff</p></div><p></p></div></div>Some of that caution is migrating to the manufacturing sector, with several economists arguing that Tuesday's data has been made even worse by the fear of a Brexit.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Barclays' economist Andrzej Szczepaniak noted that "rising uncertainty on the EU referendum outcome is negatively impacting firm sentiment," while Pantheon Macroeconomics' Samuel Tombs says that "Manufacturers reported that the EU referendum had caused some clients to delay spending."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, while Brexit is weighing on industry and the wider economy to some extent, it certainly isn't the only thing causing trouble. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here's more from Pantheon Macroeconomics (emphasis ours): </span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">The current downturn in manufacturing initially began early last year, in response to sterling's 15% appreciation between mid-2013 and mid-2015. But weak overseas demand can no longer be blamed exclusively for the sector's problems. The small gap in April between the overall orders and export orders balances, 50.4 and 49.5 respectively, implies that only a slim majority of manufacturers are seeing rising domestic demand.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>It is hard, however, to attribute the decline in consumer goods demand solely to Brexit risk.</strong> Consumer confidence has ebbed lately, but it has remained high by past standards. We think that weaker demand for consumer goods <strong>reflects a fundamental slowdown in households' real income growth. Inflation is slowly picking up, employment growth has faded markedly, and welfare spending cuts intensified in April.</strong></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tuesday's PMI contraction coincides with a fall in UK GDP growth. Last week, the ONS reported that GDP growth fell to just 0.4% in the first quarter of 2016, meeting expectations, but well below the 0.6% growth seen in Q4 of last year. The fall was quickly dismissed by chancellor George Osborne as a reflection of fears surrounding the impending Brexit vote, but again, that only goes part of the way to explaining what caused the slide. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As Pantheon Macroeconomic said on the day of the GDP figures: "The downward trend in GDP growth since 2014 suggests that the EU referendum cannot be blamed for all of the economy's ills. The fiscal squeeze has tightened this year after a pre-election pause, while the boost to growth in household spending from falling saving and rapid employment growth has run its course."</span></p><p>Pantheon's views are corroborated by HSBC, which said in a note to clients on Tuesday that it finds what is happening to the UK's manufacturers "worrying" and that it is "getting worse, not better." Here's an extract from the note, by economist Elizabeth Martins (emphasis ours):</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Latest GDP data showed a renewed decline for the manufacturing sector in Q1 - output fell 0.4% qoq in Q1 2016. Of the last five quarters, this was the fourth in which the sector has contracted (the exception being Q4 2015, when output was flat). <strong>Today's number suggests the outlook is getting worse, not better. The implications for employment in the UK are also potentially negative</strong>: Markit, which compiles the survey, suggests the data signal "close to 20,000 job losses over the last three months". Manufacturing accounted for just under 8% of employment in the UK in Q4 2015, employing 2.6m people in the UK.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>We find the concerns about 'falling retailer confidence' somewhat worrying</strong>, particularly against the backdrop of March's poor retail sales numbers. Again, this may reflect near-term political uncertainty. But given the importance of private consumption to the UK economy, any signs of a slowdown will be scrutinised.</p><p>The data paints a bleak picture. The manufacturing sector is losing jobs, real wage growth is negligible, GDP growth is slowing, and as this chart from Barclays shows, consumer spending is cooling off massively:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Barclays</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Generally speaking, consumers are the great rescuers of the economy, but if they stop spending, things could go very bad, very quickly. As Business Insider's Jim Edwards pointed out in March, people have shifted spending from consumer goods to food, suggesting that disposable income has lowered significantly, which has in turn led people to exhaust their savings.</p><p>Things might not be quite so scary if there were any tools left to deal with the impending doom facing the British economy, but we're pretty much out of ammo. <a href="http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/minutes/pages/mpc/default.aspx">The Bank of England's base rate is stuck just above zero</a>, and the prospect of negative rates doesn't exactly hold much promise. Bar a little bit of pick-up in the Swedish economy since their introduction, and an uptick in eurozone GDP, negative rates haven't managed to spur anywhere near as much activity as intended.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Bank's other alternative is so-called helicopter money, where central banks create new cash and give it directly to people to spend on whatever they want, but that's not going to happen here any time soon. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/mark-carney-speaks-to-house-of-lords-economic-affairs-committee-2016-4">BoE governor Mark Carney says he is "not a believer in the concept</a>" and has effectively ruled out helicopter money, saying that it can lead to a "compounded Ponzi scheme."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We've also got a Conservative government that is staunchly committed to cutting the budget deficit and controlling spending, so the likelihood of the other alternative - big fiscal stimulus in the form of heavy borrowing, and investment in infrastructure projects like railway lines, hospitals, tech ventures, and schools, is very low indeed. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Britain's manufacturers have fallen off a cliff, and it's another terrifying sign of what's to come. The consumer perception of vocal brands was that they were handling the pandemic better.<br /><br />As consumers look forward to drawing hope and a sense of normalcy from all possible sources, how brands respond during the pandemic will be remembered by consumers.<br /><br /><strong>Stand for something:</strong> If there ever was a time to have an authentic brand voice, it’s now. Consumers today are empowered and have a voice. They want to be a part of something, and their buying choices are heavily informed by the social and global issues, fall-outs of which are extremely personal and immediate for everyone today.<br />Brands with a purpose allow consumers to collaborate and participate in something bigger than themselves and drives the hope of a better tomorrow.<br /><br />In 2011, the outdoor-clothing brand Patagonia urged people not to buy their clothing during a Black Friday sale with an image of their jacket with the statement “Don’t buy this jacket”. They went on to list the strain the production of this one jacket puts on the environment and resources urging people with a “Don’t buy what you don’t need”<br />message.<br /> <br />The ad attempted to educate the consumer that even a jacket manufactured following high environmental production standards, comes at a high cost. The repair, reuse, recycle belief that the brand stood with resonated with audiences willing to choose better, more ethical brands establishing Patagonia as a brand with a promise. Needless<br />to say Patagonia’s sustainable position tripled its revenue, rising to $750 million between 2008 and 2015.<br /> <br /><strong>A common denominator:</strong> Our most pressing needs are no longer a secret. If we weren’t before, we now know what matters. As do the brands. Uber’s initiative to offer the Uber Essential service during the imposition of curfew to facilitate necessary travel is a great example of how the brand uniquely met the consumers’ unmet need. The<br />unique aligning of our priorities is an opportunity for brands to get creative and stand out, becoming partners for the consumers through these times. A new product, service, solution, message, initiative, mobile kiosk, markdowns, taking a stand — anything that has an underlying empathetic vein, is certain to make the customer interaction deeper and build lasting brand loyalty.<br /><br /><strong>Engage Engage Engage:</strong> Show up for your customers wherever your customers are at. Build your digital and social media presence. Take your business online where possible as the storefronts remain deserted. Seek feedback and build engagement. The ideas are aplenty—live stream product launches, create interactive content, start a how-<br />to series. Collaborate towards shared goals and turn your buyers into engaged customers. Turning buyers into partners in a common ecosystem is how brands build robust communities.<br /><br />The world is set to very vividly get divided into the 'Pre' and 'Post' Covid era. Whether the dramatic jump between the two eras leaves brands more innovative, nimble, and engaging or pushed to the wayside, will be determined by how smartly brands utilize their marketing spend.<br />

Now is the time for contagious positivity

<br /> When former Union Minister <keyword id="42332" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jairam-Ramesh">Jairam Ramesh</keyword> coined the word ‘Chindia’ almost a decade ago, it was a term that spoke of aspirations. It was what described the dream of coming together of two formidable forces that were to define the direction of global economy.<br />
 <br />
The idea was to bring together the two neighbouring countries that seemed to nurture more tension than trade. The aim was to create an ambience where trust and trade would thrive. It was all about co-operating and competing with each other for mutual benefits.<br />
 <br /> But the dream went awry as the time passed. Internal problems plagued both <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> and the road became foggy. Nevertheless, both of them now stand on the threshold of a new dawn, with the process of change in leadership having reached its culmination. Now, the past history of attrition must be laid to a peaceful rest if that is possible. After all, that baggage of the past can never help the nations move forward to meet dreams of the generations ahead.<br />
 <br /> Incidentally, the leaders of both nations – <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> of India and Xi Jinping of China – seem quite alike and committed to their vision. And the hopes of ‘Chindia’ have been stoked by the generations that have passed the baton to their offspring. Change of perception is, indeed, imminent. Or so it seems.<br />
 <br />
Only, in India’s case, hope has taken shape with the Parliamentary elections that were held across the nation over the past few months. Indian citizens voted for their dream of seeing better days. It is not just about seeing India sprint forward, but sprint without diseased innards. While China has gone from strength to strength with shooting GDP, economic stability and prowess, and grabbed the attention of the entire world by hosting international events such as the Olympic Games in 2008, India turned out to be a lame duck during the 2010 Commonwealth Games that cost the country its image and credibility in the international arena. Corruption gnawed at the very core of the country. Economic growth had gone from bad to worse and inflation ate up the meager resources of the common man. This had to change.<br />
 <br />
Now that the internal changes have been implemented, both countries have shown strong commitment towards mitigating recurrent tension in their relationship. But even then, Tibet will always remain a painful memory for both nations. China’s partnership with Pakistan will make India uncomfortable. And Modi’s proximity to Japan’s nationalist Prime Minister Shinzo Abe makes Beijing wary. These apart, China and India have a lot to look forward to do, especially as they have common interest when pitted against the established super powers of the world.<br />
 <br />
As far as bilateral trade goes, the path adopted by the two nations is extremely dismal, compared to the potential they have. However, India’s Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj recently met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Delhi, much as a show of hope for the coming times.<br />
 <br />
China’s efficiency and expertise could make for some of the biggest exports from that nation into India’s hinterlands. Just consider this – China could be helping India meet its infrastructural needs. That is one of the ways to explore modern trade possibilities.<br />
 <br />
The keyword here is not benevolence but participation. China has been showing strong signs of moving away from low-end manufacturing to higher levels of production. India could probably explore the ways to fulfil this gap and push its manufacturing ability a few notches up, compared to other nations such as Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia, which are in the same league.<br />
 <br />
Governments of both the countries should also put their heads together in a bid to support the new-found middle class, which is expanding its base by leveraging its own strengths and fighting its own challenges. The new economy has also brought in new issues that need some redressal mechanism soon, failing which Chindia can suffer the worst nightmares of global warming.<br />
 <br />
Interestingly, India’s growth is concentrated in the urban areas although agriculture continues to claim a bigger margin of the budget year after year. Similarly, the Chinese coastline is swelling with thriving cities while areas located away from the pockets of economy await some fresh lease of life to be pumped into them. In other words, India stands exactly in the same position as China does in this respect. So it is time for both the countries to find a feasible solution and compare notes on their progress.<br />
 <br />
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did send out a strong message even during the run-up to the polls, clarifying his stand on protecting the Indian borders from intruders. But when the ‘intrusion’ issues are laid to rest in an amicable manner, it will be time for both India and China to take the most feasible route of trade and support each other in the growth trajectory. It will not only help the two neighbouring nations, but will also be a shining example of how nations can be fast friends after long years of atrocities. Love thy neighbour, in true sense.<br />

Chindia: Now Is The Time For Rising Together<b></b>

<p>The deal struck by Congress Wednesday only reopens the government until January 15 and raises the debt ceiling until February 7, so it hasn't quite been resolved yet. As a result, it seems as if chances are increasing that the Federal Reserve will continue to delay tapering back its quantitative easing program.</p>
<p>In a note to clients today, Currie says he's not ready to short <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> just yet:</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span></span><span>Gold is back to where it was when the US debt ceiling debates started, as the risks of deferred tapering erased any optimism that was generated late last week. We continue to argue that the key to the gold outlook is data that shows a strong US recovery and gives the market confidence that tapering will begin. We still believe that this is the key trigger for gold prices even as the risks of deferred tapering have increased. Accordingly, we still expect gold to trade close to our near-term target of $1300/toz until the end of this year when our economists expect economic data to begin to show some confirmation of the economic improvement embedded in the 2014 US outlook. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>This more optimistic 2014 US economic outlook is what drives our economists' expectations for tapering next year (whether it starts in December, March or June), which combined with a stronger dollar and weaker emerging market currencies, suggests that the investment and monetary demand for gold will create significant downside risks for gold prices in 2014. Accordingly, we are maintaining our end of 2014 gold price target of $1050/toz.</span></p>

GOLDMAN: Now Is Not The Time To Short Gold

Drones that automatically follow you around. Self-driving cars. A TV as thin as a credit card.</p><p>But while most of the show is about looking forward to what's next in tech, I had a lot of trouble staying in the present. I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I was hoping the biggest showcase of gadgets in the world would give me some good guidance.</p><p>Unfortunately, I left the show disappointed.</p><p>As a Mac user since 2004, I had high hopes last fall for Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro. I still think it's probably the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macbook-pro-review-2016-11">best laptop around</a>, but not without some serious caveats, most notably its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-macbook-pro-battery-life-shorter-than-expected-2016-11">battery life issues</a>. The MacBook Air is great, but it still has that old, low-resolution screen and the same basic design from over six years ago. Ouch.</p><p>Then there's the newer, super-thin MacBook. While I'm in love with the design and ultra-portability, it's slightly underpowered for my needs, and I'm not confident it'll last me more than a couple of years before I need to upgrade again.</p><p>I just don't feel confident buying a new MacBook today.</p><h2>So, what else is there?</h2><p>I suddenly find myself Windows-curious.</p><p>After a disastrous run with Windows 8, Microsoft has redeemed itself with Windows 10, which finally feels like a mature operating system and an enticing alternative for Mac lovers like me. Over the last year, laptops running Windows 10 feel a step ahead of what we're seeing in the MacBooks. Touchscreens. Thoughtful, opinionated designs. And plenty of power under the hood. </p><p>The MacBook Pro's new Touch Bar has some clever uses, but it falls short of what's possible with a full touchscreen. (Apple remains steadfast in its position that laptops shouldn't have touchscreens.)</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Jeff Dunn</span></p><p class="caption">The new Dell XPS looks interesting, but it doesn't have enough power.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But even the newest Windows 10 laptops don't cut it for me. Dell introduced a new version of its XPS 13 laptop with a touchscreen that folds over into a tablet mode, but like the MacBook, it doesn't have enough power for me. I'm intrigued by HP's Spectre laptops, but the design doesn't exactly blow me away. Same with the latest stuff from Lenovo. I've also been testing Microsoft's latest Surface Book, which seems like the best of the bunch to me, except I'm not wild about the detachable screen.</p><p>Plus there are still a few quirks with Windows 10 that bother me, like the lack of touch-friendly tablet apps.</p><h2>What about Chromebooks?</h2><p>Chromebooks are the wild card.</p><p>They're great for doing just about everything you want to do on a computer, but still have some limitations when it comes to running traditional apps. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-chromebook-pro-plus-google-android-specs-features-photos-2017-1">Samsung had the biggest Chromebook announcement of CES</a>, releasing two touchscreen models that can run Android apps.</p><p>But Chromebooks and ChromeOS, Google's operating system for these laptops, are in a weird transition period right now. Google is gearing up to radically change ChromeOS and merge it with Android into one super operating system for laptops, codenamed "Andromeda." As enticing as some Chromebooks may be, I think it's worth waiting to see what Google announces this fall before investing in a Chromebook.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Jeff Dunn</span></p><p class="caption">Samsung's newest Chromebook.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>What now?</h2><p>Buying a laptop used to be relatively easy. As a Mac loyalist, I'd just get the best MacBook and be good to go for several years. But that won't work today. There are too many compromises with every model in the MacBook lineup, and I can't buy any of them with confidence.</p><p>Making the leap to a new platform like Windows or ChromeOS comes with its own problems. ChromeOS is still half-baked and it'll be several months before we see Google's grand vision for it. Now is the the worst time to buy a laptop

<p>At the end of last year, immigration reform seemed dead. House leadership kept saying they'd take it up in the future, but were vague on a timetable. No one (<a href="http://dannyvinik.com/2013/10/24/the-politics-of-immigration-reform/">including me</a>) seemed to have much hope.</p>
<p>But in recent weeks, House Republican leadership has shown a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/house-republican-immigration-reform-principles-2014-1">serious desire</a> to pass a series of smaller bills and actually get immigration reform done.</p>
<p>Given that midterm elections are often determined by a party's ability to get out its base to vote, many conservatives are concerned that pursuing immigration reform will divide the party and hurt them in November.</p>
<p>Among the people who have voiced this opinion are <a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/reihan-salam/2014/01/31/to-win-votes-the-gop-should-focus-on-jobs-not-immigration/">Reihan Salam</a>, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-31/republicans-immigration-deal-makes-no-sense.html">Ramesh Ponnuru</a>, <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2014/01/31/on_immigration_what_are_the_republicans_thinking_121423.html">Sean Trende</a> and <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/01/31/why-republicans-might-want-to-think-twice-about-immigration-reform-before-the-2014-election/">Chris Cillizza</a>. It's a reasonable opinion, but these arguments are both too cynical and mistake the optimal political timetable for immigration reform.</p>
<p>First, you have to remember that the Republican Party is intent on passing immigration reform before the 2016 election to try to win back some of the Hispanic vote. <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2013/06/21/the_case_of_the_missing_white_voters_revisited_118893.html">Trende</a> <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2013/06/25/does_the_gop_have_to_pass_immigration_reform_118952.html">has</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Lost-Majority-Future-Government/dp/0230116469">written</a> <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2013/07/12/yes_the_missing_whites_matter_119170.html">repeatedly</a> that immigration reform is not necessary for Republicans to win the White House and that agreeing to immigration reform won't necessarily win back a large share of the Hispanic vote. He's right, but the establishment is still convinced that immigration reform is vital for the party's success in 2016.</p>
<p>So, given that Republicans are determined to pass immigration reform back the 2016 election, then you next have to think about when is the best time to make it happen. Not in 2016, when the election will be in full swing. But 2015 is very problematic as well because it will be right around when primaries pick up. <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/01/31/the-nightmare-scenario-for-republicans-on-immigration/">As Greg Sargent points out</a>, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) would love for immigration reform to be a major issue in the Republican primary. It could easily pull the entire Republican field to the right and damage their chances in the general election.</p>
<p>At that point, you're left with this year.</p>
<p>There are a few more reasons this makes sense. For the first time in years, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has tenuous control in his party. The tea party is on the defensive after losing credibility with the government shutdown and failing to block both the budget agreement and the farm bill. Even on the debt ceiling, few conservatives are making crazy demands. (<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/boehner-proposes-linking-debt-limit-hike-to-a-restoration-of-recent-cuts-to-military-benefits/2014/02/05/7ea8616a-8e99-11e3-b46a-5a3d0d2130da_story.html">Rep. Michele Bachmann has even given in.</a>)</p>
<p>In addition, the Senate has already passed an immigration bill. Of course, the House is planning on doing things its own way, but at least we have a bipartisan piece of legislation that the Senate has passed. And <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2014/02/immigration-reform-house-republicans-103182.html?hp=f3">as Seung Min Kim notes in Politico</a>, that bill includes a carefully crafted deal between the Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO over guest workers, something that was not easy to accomplish. Trying to redo that in a few years won't be easy.</p>
<p>The electoral consequences are also not <em>that </em>dire for Republicans. They are already assured of keeping the House this year. The Senate is still a toss-up at best for the GOP, so pursuing immigration reform could cost them there. But the potential electoral consequences of pursuing immigration reform in 2015 could mean losing the presidency. Possibly losing the Senate when a Democrat is already in the White House is not that bad in comparison.</p>
<p>Finally, immigration reform is something that we need to get done. There are nearly 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country. Pushing this off until 2017 or further will only exacerbate the problem. Boehner may also be looking to cement his legacy, <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/05/will-john-boehner-retire-in-2014/">with rumors that he may consider retiring soon</a>. Those are two less cynical reasons that the House may take it up in the next few months.</p>
<p>None of this means immigration reform will happen. The odds are heavily stacked against it. Even among establishment Republicans, their acceptable policy ideas may not overlap at all with what the White House deems acceptable. </p>
<p>In all likelihood, their ranges of acceptable policy solutions are mutually exclusive and immigration reform will die in the next few months. But if that happens, then reform isn't happening until after President Obama leaves office, which means Republicans will have to give up on their goal of passing immigration reform before the 2016 election.</p>
<p>Right now, they're not quite ready to give up. That means they must choose the best time and political environment to push legislation. That time is now.</p>

If Immigration Reform Is Going To Happen, Now Is The Time

<p>Yes, Argentina has said that it is<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/argentina-capitulates-2014-6"> willing to negotiate</a> with a group of hedge fund managers that have been suing the country for full payment on Argentine bonds dating back to the country's last financial collapse in 2001.  With interest, it's about $1.7 billion.</p>
<p>And yes, the two parties - NML (the hedge funds) and Argentina - met yesterday in the office of Judge Thomas Griesa, the judge whose order that Argentina pay the hedge fund managers in full was essentially upheld by the Supreme Court on Monday.</p>
<p>But there are still a few very ugly loose ends to tie up here. One of them being the little matter of a <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/argentina-plans-debt-swap-analysts-doomed-24200517">$907 million</a> payment due June 30th that Argentina owes exchange bondholders, the 92% of investors holding these bonds who did take a haircut on the same debt that NML owns. Because Judge Griesa l<a href="https://twitter.com/franma1990/status/479305785940672512">ifted the stay on payment</a> put in place during Argentina's appeal to the Supreme Court, that payment calendar is back in motion.</p>
<p>And Argentina needs to figure something out as soon as possible, for according to Judge Griesa's order, it cannot pay exchange bondholders without paying the holdouts as well.</p>
<p>That means there needs to be some fast talking, but Jorge Capitanich, the head of Argentina's cabinet, has said the country will not send a delegation to New York City to negotiate. On that news, A<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-19/argentine-bonds-fall-as-capitanich-rules-out-mission-to-new-york.html">rgentine bonds reversed the gains</a> they made Wednesday on the news that the country would negotiate.</p>
<p>Perhaps this is what Judge Griesa was talking about when <a href="http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1702446-tras-la-reunion-el-juez-thomas-griesa-se-refirio-a-la-cadena-nacional-de-cristina-kirchner-no-me-da-confianza">he said at the meeting</a>: "Really a promise of good faith from Argentina gives me little confidence that the country will make its payments."</p>
<p>He also said that President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's fiery language regarding the "vulture" funds does not help matters either.</p>
<p>So what are Argentina's options? (Aside from changing the jurisdiction of the bonds from the U.S. to Argentina, a cockamamie scheme concocted by Finance Minsiter Axel Kicillof that Griesa shot down yesterday.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.law.unc.edu/faculty/directory/weidemaierwmarkc/">UNC Law Professor Mark C. Weidemaier</a> wrote an excellent post about it on the legal blog, <a href="http://www.creditslips.org/">Credit Slips</a>. We'll bullet the options he outlined below:</p>
<ul>
<li>Argentina can appeal to the Supreme Court, the highest Court in the land is unlikely to play that game, and it is Judge Griesa who has control of the stay on payment anyway. So this would be a waste of time. Additionally, according to <a href="http://www.creditslips.org/files/arg7712105-letter-2-061614.pdf">NML the stay has BEEN over.</a></li>
<li>Argentina can ask NML if they can come up with a payment plan. It has $28 billion in reserves in its Central Bank right now, and perhaps it feels a close to $2 billion payment all at once is a little hard to scrap together.</li>
</ul>
<p>Another option that Weidemaier didn't point out, but is always implicit in this story, is that Argentina can also decide to defy the Court and potentially set off another bomb in its own economy. What the professor did say is that the best thing the country can do is try to find a way to keep the stay going and buy more time to come up with a plan.</p>
<p>But who knows if Judge Griesa is down for that. (Likely, he's not.)</p>
<p>What we do know is that Argentina has $28 billion in its Central Bank right now. That's it. If it manages to show international markets that it is negotiating in good faith, it can likely raise more money by issuing new bonds. Right now it can't, uncertainty over this case has made that impossible.</p>
<p>Like one Argentine bond trader told Business Insider - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/singer-group-argentina-and-supreme-court-2014-6">"the disaster window is always open."</a></p>
<p>Keep that in mind.</p>

That's because we're on the cusp of a mega-release cycle for the best smartphones that'll launch this year.</p><p>On August 23, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-note-8-announcement-date-2017-7">Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 8</a>, its newest flagship phone. According to numerous leaks, the Note 8 will build on the excellent Galaxy S8, adding a dual-lens camera, larger screen, and beautiful design. (Don't worry. Samsung says it's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-issues-galaxy-note-7-battery-report-2017-1">fixed that whole exploding problem</a>.)</p><p>Then comes the big one: Apple is expected to announce three new iPhones in September. Two of those models will be updates to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the so-called iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. But the real star will be the 10th anniversary edition of the iPhone, which most people have been calling the iPhone 8. (Hopefully Apple gets more creative than that with the name.)</p><p>The iPhone 8 is said to have an OLED screen with minimal bezels, wireless charging, a special front camera that can unlock the phone using facial recognition, and a metal-and-glass body.</p><p>Oh, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-8-cost-2017-7">it'll probably cost at least $1,000</a>.</p><p>Finally, Google is expected to announce the sequel to its excellent Pixel smartphone in October. The Pixel was the first smartphone designed by Google, and it was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-pixel-review-2016-10">critical success</a>. The Pixel 2 is expected to build on that success. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-pixel-2-rumors-release-date-specs-features-2017-7">According to the latest leaks</a>, the phone will have a 6-inch screen, an improved camera, and one of the fastest phone processors available.</p><p>Even if you don't want to spend a fortune on a new phone, you should still wait. As soon as these new phones come out, older models like the iPhone 7, Galaxy S8, and Google Pixel will all be available at a discount. That means you're getting a top-of-the-line phone for a bargain. Now is the worst time to buy a smartphone

<p>This week - right now - is the time to sell your Wii U game console. Nintendo's most recent game console is, more or less, dead in the water.</p><p>Like cars, boats, and other luxury items, video game consoles immediately start depreciating in value from the moment you walk out of the store. That much we already know.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nam Y. Huh / AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But in the case of the Wii U, that depreciation factor just accelerated dramatically. Nintendo announced on Wednesday that its next game console, currently codenamed "NX," will launch in March 2017. That's just shy of one year from now.</p><p>More importantly, there are next to no major games coming from Nintendo (or anywhere else, for that matter) to the Wii U between now and March 2017. With the launch of "Star Fox Zero" this month, there are effectively no major Nintendo games in the pipeline. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nintendo</span></p><p class="caption">An image from "Star Fox Zero," likely the last major first-party Nintendo game on the Wii U.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Normally, this would be where I'd say, "But there's a major video game conference, E3, in June where we might hear more." Not likely this year! Nintendo issued a press release on Wednesday explaining its focus at the show this year (emphasis mine):</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in "The Legend of Zelda" franchise. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and <strong>it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show</strong>, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion.</p><p>Based on that, we <em>could</em> hear about more games coming to the Wii U, they just won't be "playable" at E3. But then again, any games coming to the Wii U between E3 in June and March 2017 are unlikely to be major games. With a new game console coming in the near future, it doesn't make much business sense for Nintendo to release any major Wii U games between now and March 2017.</p><p>After all, <a href="https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/hard_soft/">Nintendo's only sold 12.8 million Wii U consoles since launch in 2012</a>. That's roughly one-tenth the sales of Nintendo's previous console, the Nintendo Wii. Yep, 2017. Oh and wouldn't you know it, it's also the first officially announced game for Nintendo's new console (NX). </p><p>So, yes, despite the great times we've all had with "Splatoon" and "Super Mario 3D World" and "Mario Kart 8" and whatever other games you hold dear on the Wii U, now is the time to sell your Wii U. <p>That's because <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> is gearing up to announce new iPad models, including a new full-sized iPad and an <keyword id="6617405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPad-mini">iPad Mini</keyword>, very soon. There have been some whispers that the announcement will happen on October 15, but that hasn't been confirmed by the usual plugged-in Apple reporters.</p>
<p>Last year, Apple announced the iPad Mini and a minor improvement to the full-sized iPad in mid-October. The devices launched in late October. It's reasonable to assume that there will be another new iPad announcement around the same time this year. </p>
<p>So what will the new iPads be able to do?</p>
<p>There have been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/space-gray-ipad-2013-9">several leaks</a> over the last few months of the new full-sized iPad. It will likely be redesigned to looks similar to the iPad Mini. That means it'll be thinner and have a narrower border around the screen.</p>
<p>Other reports suggest that the iPad Mini will get an update with the super-sharp Retina display. That'd be a good move since other smaller tablets like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nexus-7-review-2013-8">Google's Nexus 7</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-announces-new-kindle-fire-hdx-tablets-2013-9">Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX</a> already have screens that are better than the one on the current iPad Mini.</p>
<p>The only hiccup with the new iPad Mini could be price. Some have suggested that if Apple gives the iPad Mini a Retina display, the price will go up from the $329 starting point.</p>
