PM Modi will inaugurate SEMICON India 2024 at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, today. Earlier on Tuesday, PM Modi chaired Semiconductor Executives' Roundtable at his residence. During the meeting, the Prime Minister said that their ideas will not only shape their business but also India's future. Mentioning that the coming time will be technology-driven, Prime Minister said semiconductor is the basis of the Digital Age and the day is not far "when the semiconductor industry will be the bedrock for even our basic necessities". The Prime Minister emphasised that democracy and technology together can ensure the welfare of humanity and India is moving ahead on this path recognizing its global responsibility in the semiconductor sector. According to an official release, the Prime Minister talked about the pillars of development which include developing social, digital and physical infrastructure, giving boost to inclusive development, reducing compliance burden and attracting investment in manufacturing and innovations. SEMICON India 2024 is being organised from 11 to 13 September with the theme "Shaping the Semiconductor Future." The three-day conference will showcase India's semiconductor strategy and policy, which envisions making India a global hub for semiconductors. It will witness the participation of top leadership of global semiconductor giants and will bring together global leaders, companies, and experts of the semiconductor industry. The conference will witness participation of more than 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers.

<ul><li>Gamezop is a multigame platform that allows users to play games with a single tap and without installing any apps.</li><li>Between last year and now, Gamezop has had an impressive growth, it has tripled its revenues and user numbers.</li><li>We speak to <keyword id="3248633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yashash-Agarwal">Yashash Agarwal</keyword>, CEO and Founder, Gamezop who tells us that in 2020, nearly 400 million Indians played mobile games and nearly 272 million of those played on Gamezop. He tells us about the platform's journey so far.</li></ul>The Indian gaming market is headed towards explosive growth in the next four years, according to a recently released report by KPMG. According to its reports, ‘Beyond the tipping point – A primer on Casual gaming in India’, overall online casual gaming sub-segment in India stood at a size of Rs 60 billion in FY21 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of29% over FY21-25, to reach a size of Rs 169billion. The opportunities in the segment are massive and in the last few years, we have seen an impressive amount of e-gaming platforms come to the fore and engage with people. However, it is not just the likes of Dream11 and MyCircle11 that are helping the segment grow. Over the years, many of us have come across gaming sections added to different websites and publications and most of us have ended up spending much more time on these websites than we otherwise would have, thanks to the gaming sections that are simple to play. Homegrown multi-games platform Gamezop is one such platform that is behind a lot of the gaming sections you see on many non-game websites and apps. Over the years, the platform has built a robust business model where it does not have to spend anything on creating the games it hosts, and is yet able to engage with close to 40 million players ever month. This has also given advertisers an opportunity to target an engaged set of audiences on Gamzop’s platform. Gamezop had also raised Rs 32 crore in a funding round led by <keyword id="9833412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitkraft-ventures">Bitkraft Ventures</keyword> in August last year. We recently caught up with Yashash Agarwal, CEO and Founder, Gamezop, who told us how the platform has been building its business, steadily increasing the number of platform it hosts on while also becoming profitable. Excerpts: Q) Walk me through the journey of Gamezop. How did it come into being, what was the gap in the market you were trying to fill? Gamezop was started when we realized that the experience of getting into casual games was too cumbersome owing to the necessity for installing each game as an app first. Before YouTube was launched in 2005, each video was downloaded as a file and played on a media player. That is exactly where smartphone gaming is today:games need to be installed individually, which is extremely frictional. Gamezop makes games instant, like YouTube does with videos. On our game center, users play games just like they play videos: with a single tap and without the need to install apps. Q) What kind of growth have you witnessed in the past few months? You are already profitable? Gaming companies around the world have seen their heyday in the past few months with people spending so much time indoors. Between last year and now, we have tripled our revenues and user numbers. The interesting thing about our business is that we are growing while being profitable. We have kept our unit economics quite disciplined and our Series A last year hasn’t changed that. Q) How does Gamezop work? Where do users find you? Gamezop is a multigame platform that works very unconventionally to acquire users – rather than pushing app installs of games, we embed our game centre within non-gaming apps and websites, allowing their users to play games instantly. This way, we do not have to spend money to acquire users inorganically but can piggyback on the distribution of other products. The idea is to not push another product to users but meet them within popular apps and websites which they are already using. Q) How do apps and websites using your platform benefit? Apps and websites that integrate our game centre see their engagement levels going up immediately. This is because our entire offering can be consumed by users within these products. Let’s say an OTT platform adds a gaming section within their product through our game centre. Naturally, users who have affinity for gaming will now start spending additional time on the platform because they will engage in two forms of content and not just one. You will find our games within numerous news, media, and entertainment products, including all key <keyword id="6356641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> properties, <keyword id="3163762" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="SonyLIV">SonyLiv</keyword>, Amazon, MSN, Goibibo, and <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword>. Q) How many apps and websites have integrated your platform? What kind of user base do you have currently through your network? Over 2,800 products have Gamezop powering games for their users. This allows us to entertain over 40 million users each month. In 2020, nearly 400 million Indians played mobile games; 272 million of those played on Gamezop. Q) Are your games non-intrusive or can ads be put into the games too? We can run brand promotions within our games in a non-intrusive manner. No ads appear during the gameplay. However, in breakthrough moments such as when the game is loading or the user has crossed a level, we see that the users have very high attention. This is where we place brands and allow them to tell their story. Q) Is your platform available internationally too? More than 50% of our revenues come from outside India. Our games have actually done very well internationally. Q) What are a few factors that have helped take you where you are? Are there more such platforms available or do you have the first-movers' advantage? Users don’t need to download newspapers as PDFs or music as mp3 files. They are able to consume these forms of content online. However, users had to download gaming apps to play games. As Gamezop removed this friction of installing gaming apps, it genuinely solved a problem for the users which has played a big hand in its growth. There are various gaming platforms out there. Not everyone is looking to deliver high-quality gaming experiences within third-party products. Q) E-gaming is witnessing impressive growth in India. Do you have plans of diversifying your offering, work closely with game developers and launch your own games in the future? We have truly amazing developers making games for the Gamezop game centre so the need to do it ourselves hasn’t arisen. Q) How have you been helping the developer community? How does this community benefit from being a part of Gamezop? Gamezop is truly excited to be able to play role in nurturing the gaming ecosystem. There are over 300 games on Gamezop that we have acquired from over 75 developers. With these developers, our relationship is anything but transactional. We work very closely with them right of ideating the game to finally launching it on our platform. We are happy to say that we have opened a new stream of monetisation for these game developers and are determined to deepen our relationships with them. The success of Gamezop is closely tied to the success of the game developers. We have a robust community of engaged game developers where ideas and exchanged. A well-knit network of professionals always raises the bar for everyone. Q) How are you different from other gaming platforms? How big is your team? Are you also looking for funding? Smartphone gaming is tied to pushing installs of apps, and most gaming platforms seem comfortable with that. With our approach of having a game centre for instant games, we are challenging the status quo. We have a 75-member team. We raised our Series A round last year led by Bitkraft Ventures. We have been growing profitably since and do not see a need to raise capital at the moment. Q) What is your vision for Gamezop? Just like using Gmail or Facebook is the default log-in method for most apps, Gamezop wishes to be the default entertainment section within apps around the world.

We wanted to understand what went behind this campaign and why it was important to come up with the campaign. Telling us about the thought behind the campaign, Sivakumar Sundaram, Chairman, Executive Committee (CEC), Bennett Coleman &amp; Co. Ltd tells us, “In India, newspapers is not merely a provider of news, but an integral part of our everyday life. For those who share this <keyword id="6415488" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reading-habit">reading habit</keyword> know that a morning is never the same without a newspaper. There are many sources of news. But the fact that it curates, validates and presents news, views and analysis in a manner that a reader can consume in one read in the morning makes it unique. It is a tribute to our readers and the bond they share with their morning habit,” adds Sundaram. Newspapers are safe In the initial days of the lockdown, there were rumors across the country that newspapers could carry the virus, which led to people cancelling their subscriptions. However, slowly people have started to realize these were just rumors and have re-started newspaper deliveries. “The circulation of newspapers has steadily climbed up after the initial lockdown. Most readers have eagerly accepted the paperback, casting aside the false rumours regarding the safety of newspaper delivery at home. Today we are back to about 90% in key markets of our pre-Covid circulation and over 70% in most markets. As markets are opening up, we are seeing a rapidly accelerating acceptance of the newspaper,” shares Sundaram. While this campaign touches an emotional chord with all of us who have grown up with the habit of reading newspapers, BCCL has been undertaking a lot of initiatives to bust rumors and tell people about the safety of newspapers. Speaking about some of these initiatives, Sundaram says, “We have launched many initiatives, both at a local and national level to help readers get back their paper. Under the ‘I want my Paper’ campaign launched two months ago, we delivered information regarding the importance of a newspaper in turbulent times, rational and scientific data to prove the safety of the newspaper and creating facilities to ease the process of restarting the newspaper subscription. We have engaged housing societies through educational and awareness programs to ensure they arrive at the right decisions regarding how to conduct themselves during the epidemic. We have also engaged with the medical fraternity to ensure our readers get the most authentic information on dealing with the crisis and many such activities. <ul><li>In our latest episode of BTS with Insiders, we got chatting with <keyword id="212001" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agnello-Dias">Agnello Dias</keyword>, Creative Chairperson, Dentsu Aegis Network India and Co-Founder, Taproot Dentsu and <keyword id="343974" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Padhi">Santosh Padhi</keyword>, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, Taproot Dentsu about a few campaigns close to their hearts.</li><li>They took us behind the scenes of popular campaigns like Pepsi's Change the Game and <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>'s Har Ek Friend Zaruri Hota Hai, among others.</li></ul> It was in 2009 that Agnello Dias (Aggie) and Santosh Padhi (Paddy), two people pegged as the hottest creative stars in Indian advertising came together and founded Taproot. Within just a few years of starting the agency, it boasted of an enviable roster of brands it had created campaigns for including <keyword id="54572" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword>, Airtel and Bennett, Coleman &amp; Company. Three years later, Japanese advertising major Dentsu acquired a majority in the agency. Over the past 11 years, with Aggie and Paddy at the helm of affairs, the agency has come up with some memorable, powerful campaigns that have helped brands tell wonderful, engaging stories. As a part of our latest series, BTS with Insiders, we spoke to the creative duo about some of the most memorable campaigns they have created together. Here are a few of the stories they shared with us. <div type="javascript" title="Facebook" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Pepsi ‘Change the Game’ campaigns We all know about the cola wars of the past when players like Pepsi, Coca-Cola and Thums Up would all try to come up with irreverent campaigns, poking fun at each other. In 2011, Pepsi was the official World Cup sponsor. It was a brand that had always stood for irreverence, and everything that was anti-authoritarian and anti-establishment. In the past, it had roasted Coca-Cola when it was the official world cup sponsor with its cheeky, ‘Nothing Official About It’ campaign. So in 2011, when it was the official sponsor, its brief was unique. It wanted to say it is the official sponsor, while also making a statement that it is proudly irreverent. “During the discussion around the campaign, we stumbled upon the insight that the game itself had become far more irreverent than it was say 15-20 years ago,” said Aggie. The agency then decided to manifest this irreverence of the game by depicting a few key shots that the newer breed of cricketers had started playing. “Once we came up with the idea, the client was perceptive enough to see its power straight up,” added Aggie. The agency came up with five films featuring star cricketers and their trademark shots - MS Dhoni’s ‘Helicopter shot’, Virender Sehwag’s ‘Upper cut’, Harbhajan Singh’s ‘doosra’, Kevin Pietersen’s‘Switch hit’ and Tillekratne Dilshan’s ‘Dilscoop’. The campaign went on to become a huge hit, so much so that Pepsi replicated the idea in other markets like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. “It also was a very special campaign for us because it was perhaps for the first time that such a huge brand chose to work with a smaller, independent agency. It totally changed the game for us,” added Paddy with a smile. Airtel’s ‘Har Ek Friend Zaruri Hota Hai’ Before Airtel’s friendship campaign, the brand every year would come up with a campaign that would put out a world philosophy that could be appropriated by mobility, shared Aggie. “That was the time when all brands were trying to build the category, nobody was trying to take each other's market share. The brief given to us that time was that we don't see anything wrong in what we are doing by putting out a life philosophy about how the world is getting more connected except that our tone and manner is making us sound old-fashioned. The brand said that they didn’t want to become younger or exchange market shares. It just wanted to keep its philosophy, while saying it in a younger manner,” he explained. That’s how the agency thought of giving out a philosophy but not from a pulpit. The idea took birth when the agency started discussing about 3 am friends who one could turn to if someone was in trouble. And that’s how the campaign took shape. What also makes the ad memorable is the jingle created by music composer Ram Sampath, who was given the task of creating a song without using any real instrument. All the percussions in the ad come from things one might find in a classroom, including notebooks, dusters and even dustbins. The campaign went on to become a huge hit. <keyword id="6377547" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="adidas">Adidas</keyword>’ Odds In wake of the 2016 Paralympic Games, Adidas came up with a unique initiative called ‘Odds’ where para-athletes, primarily blade runners, were given a pair of the same side footwear instead of the usual pair that is sold to consumers. The campaign spoke about the inspirational story of <keyword id="2726242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Major-DP-Singh">Major DP Singh</keyword>, a Kargil war veteran who lost his leg but not his determination. “We got the insight for the ad from a simple idea. One of the kids at the agency said what if we dedicate 2 left or 2 right shoes to para-athletes? We thought it must already have been done by some brand. We were really surprised to see that it had never been done and its such an injustice on the community that for years they had to buy a pair of shoes from which they could only use 1. So we thought we had to make this larger than life,” shared Paddy. They approached Major DP Singh who agreed to be a part of the campaign and the rest, as they say, is history. Paddy also shared a life lesson that he got from Major Singh. “On the first day of the shoot, we went to the top of a mountain at 4am where he used to practice to capture the early morning sunlight. Since the spot was far from the city, we travelled for an hour. He was an army guy and wanted a proper schedule. We gave him one and told him we will finish the shoot in 2 days. The packup for the first shoot was supposed to happen at 8 or 8:30 which got delayed by an hour or so. By the end of it, he wasn’t happy and went home. And he didn’t come to the second location. When the producer tried to reach out to him he said, ‘Please tell Adidas, Taproot and Paddy that I am done with my shoot.’ We were really shocked as we had a packed schedule. So I went to his house and asked him what happened. So he said, ‘I am an army guy and I follow schedule. If your shoot was getting delayed, someone should have come and informed me. I respect time and if I respect time, you should respect me.’ I apologized and assured him that something like this never happens again. So this wasn’t just a learning for me but for everyone else who was present at the sets that day,” reminiscened Paddy. <keyword id="5709" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-mirror">Mumbai Mirror</keyword> Mumbai Mirror is a tabloid from the stable of the <keyword id="6356641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> group, a brand that Taproot had been handling for a while. The brief given to the agency for the campaign was simple, “The client said here are 6 stories we have broken, please showcase these stories. It was from there that we took the leap and said that newspaper is the voice that amplifies the voice of the oppressed. There were stories that would not make it to the national newspaper but its players like Mumbai Mirror that take these smaller oppressed voices and amplifies them,” said Aggie. Those who have watched the campaign know that it makes its point heard loud and clear. The idea was to deliberately make the campaign disturbing. “There have been opinions about why the film was so shrill, it could have been toned down. But in my opinion, when you are taking this stance it can be either disturbing or it can’t be this at all. Then it would just need to be a completely different thought. And that’s why we decided to make it that aggressive,” explained Aggie. Times of India – Farmer Suicide campaign The last campaign that the duo spoke about went on to become one of their most awarded one. Our country is no stranger to the disturbing news of farmer suicides ever year. It’s still an ongoing issue and the agency wanted to bring out the stories of these farmers who simply become a statistics every year. Not only did this make the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apples-iphone-problems-are-becoming-samsungs-problems-and-it-wants-to-sue/articleshow/69975021.cms">iPhones costlier</a>, it also meant that Apple didn’t have any physical stores in the country. While Apple waited, OnePlus and Xiaomi entered the market with their aggressive pricing and promise of flagship phones on affordable devices. In fact, OnePlus has the largest market share in India’s premium smartphone market, according to Counterpoint. This year, in particular, was tough on companies with the global slowdown in smartphone sales to which Apple was not immune. India’s weakening Rupee, which made imports more expensive, only made the situation worse. Apple’s delay in adding new features to its phones and taking its time to catch up to tech trends has also dulled the excitement that usually used to surround the launch of a new iPhone. In comparison, the constant launch of Android phones and the variety of their features has begun to seem more appealing to users. Brighter pastures ahead The government didn’t relax its rules for Apple but did so for single brand retailers at large. Either way, it now means that the company can open its signature <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-store-to-launch-in-mumbai-soon/articleshow/69246612.cms">‘Apple Stores’</a> in the country. During this time, the fatality rate in patients with cardiovascular diseases including heart failure also has been abnormally high at 10.5% as against 2.3% in the general population. This serious interruption in the continuum of care for heart patients can lead to severe criticalities and untimely deaths that could be prevented,” said Dr Gurpreet Sandhu, President, Council for Healthcare and Pharma. According to doctors, the coronavirus restrictions laid down by the government have resulted in some unhealthy changes in people’s lifestyles, which might result in a cardiovascular problem.Stress, poor diet, and emotional turmoil are factors that could take a toll on the heart. “The psychological effects (loneliness, stress, anxiety, isolation, unemployment fear and economic burden) of the pandemic combined with other lifestyle factors like smoking and drinking, irregular eating habits, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity may increase cardiovascular problem cases during the pandemic,” Dr Partap Chauhan, Director, Jiva Ayurveda. Prevention is better than cure Dr Chauhan advises people to practice yoga and pranayama to reduce stress levels. World Heart Day 2020: There has been a 10-20% surge in heart diseases from pre-COVID times in India — Here’s why

When Kartik Madhav Bhat was rebuked and given a warning for his poor performance at India’s IndiGo airlines, he decided to make a hoax phone call to New Delhi's <keyword id="89772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi-International-Airport">Indira Gandhi International Airport</keyword>'s (IGI) IndiGo Airlines complex claiming the presence of a bomb on a Mumbai-bound plane, on May 2. As expected, the airline staff took the call seriously and issued an alert, launching a thorough check of hand baggage, screening passengers and the cargo area of Mumbai-bound flights. The entire process took over two hours. After a nearly two-hour search, nothing amiss was found and the call declared a ‘hoax’. The police tracked down the subscriber of the mobile phone from which the call was placed and arrested the 23-year-old culprit today. They have also recovered the SIM he used to make the call in his possession and say he has confessed to the crime. A senior police officer told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indigo-staffer-arrested-for-hoax-bomb-call-at-igi-airport/articleshow/64147798.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Times Of India</a>, “The call was placed from a number belonging to 23-year-old IndiGo staffer, resident of Pune. The accused confessed his involvement in the case and was found to be serving IndiGo Airlines as a customer service officer at the Pune airport.” “On sustained interrogation, the accused confessed that he had done this as an act of revenge as the airlines had given him a verbal notice to improve his performance in three months or face departmental action," the police added. According to <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/business/aviation/frustrated-indigo-employee-makes-hoax-bomb-call-to-teach-airline-lesson-arrested-5175927/" data-type="tilCustomLink">Sanjay Bhatia</a>, deputy commissioner of police at Delhi’s IGI Airport, Bhat was “depressed” and “frustrated” with his employer. Indigo has since suspended the employee, but not much more has been revealed because the matter is sensitive in nature.

American multinational retail corporation Walmart has been in the process of acquiring Flipkart, India’s second largest e-commerce portal, for a while and it seems the deal may finally be made official tomorrow. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Sudden-dust-storms-in-northern-India-have-killed-over-120-people/articleshow/64027810.cms">Reports</a> last week indicated that Flipkart’s board approved the deal for Walmart to acquire 75% of the company. Keep in mind that Walmart isn’t alone in this venture. While the company will get around 60% stake in Flipkart, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, will get the other 15%. Overall, this is expected to be a $3 billion dollar expense between the two. Walmart is expected to get three seats on Flipkart’s board of directors. The company will also have a say in the how Flipkart handles it’s financial and legal matters, a source told <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/walmart-likely-to-announce-flipkart-deal-by-this-week-report-1848670">NDTV</a>. Winds of change Sachin Bansal, Flipkart’s founder, is set to leave the company altogether. As per reports, Flipkart’s co-founder will sell his 5.5% stake in the company to Walmart, resulting in around $1 billion. Sources revealed to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/people/sachin-bansal-to-sell-entire-5-5-to-walmart-as-he-exits-flipkart/articleshow/64073757.cms">Times of India</a>, that Bansal “wasn’t aligned with the strategy and operating structure that was being proposed post Walmart coming on board.” This isn’t entirely new information since rumours of his departure have been circling for a while. After Walmart’s acquisition comes through, <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="binny-bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> will stay on as the group CEO and also be given the title of executive chairman. Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Flipkart’s current CEO, will also stay with the company but won’t have a seat on the board. Sachin Bansal won’t be the only one leaving. <keyword id="163404" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>, currently Flipkart’s largest investor, is rumoured to want to back out as well, that too completely. Even Tiger Global and Accel, two other investors, maybe looking to sell a majority of their stakes.

Walmart might announce acquisition of Indian e-commerce giant tomorrow

<ul><li><keyword id="80487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword>'s will potentially be bidding to acquire more than 51% stake in <keyword id="6354742" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> by investing up to $8-10 billion. </li><li>Other major investors include <keyword id="163404" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> (23% stake), Tiger Global (20% stake) and <keyword id="6356837" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="naspers">Naspers</keyword> (16.6% stake).</li><li>SoftBank is willing to pump in an additional $3-4 billion, if Flipkart opts to pursue <keyword id="18635" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>'s offer instead of Walmart.</li></ul> Despite Amazon’s bid to buy a 60% stake in India’s Flipkart, reports say the deal will go in Walmart’s favour. Talks of Walmart wanting to acquire a massive stake of Flipkart have been on since February. And with that news, a number of companies, including Google and Amazon, seem to want a piece of Flipkart’s pie. The Bentonville-based retail giant, Walmart, has been itching to expand its online presence into the remaining Asian markets. If this deal materialises -- its biggest e-commerce bet anywhere globally -- will also trigger a re-rating of its stock market valuation, which is currently second only to Amazon. A source told <keyword id="6356641" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> (TOI) that “the shareholding agreement with Walmart is still to be signed. But it is unlikely that Amazon will come in now. Walmart and Flipkart are agreeing on the deal terms, for now.” Sources with knowledge of the proceedings told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/companies/walmart-nears-flipkart-deal-amazon-push-fails/articleshow/64010460.cms?from=mdr" data-type="tilCustomLink">TOI</a> that SoftBank has been favouring the merger with Amazon instead of Walmart. For this, it is also willing to pump in an additional $3-4 billion, in case Flipkart opts to pursue Amazon's offer instead of Walmart. While most other investors are keen on Walmart’s cashout deal, SoftBank, wants to maintain its 20% stake in the combined <keyword id="6412936" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-amazon">Flipkart-Amazon</keyword> entity. The additional amount can in-turn be deployed to buy shares from smaller investors. Flipkart has been valued at around $20 billion and its major investors include SoftBank (23% stake), Tiger Global (20% stake), Naspers (16.6% stake) and <keyword id="144381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> (one of the early investors in Flipkart that hold less than 10% stake). However, this idea does not fly with the other major investors who believe -- and perhaps rightly so -- that the potential merger with Amazon would not go past the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The CCI, founded in 2003, is a statutory body responsible for enforcing The Competition Act, 2002 which aims at preventing activities that have a significantly adverse effect on competition in India. Plus, the merger with Amazon would potentially irk the different sections of the trading community. However, SoftBank maintains, Flipkart and Amazon combined will only manage a mere 1.5% stake in the broader Indian retailing industry and therefore is unlikely to run into regulatory hurdles. The Japanese company’s founder and chairman Masayoshi Son saw the potential merger between the two e-commerce behemoths as a way to get his company a bigger play in India’s promising e-commerce market. Just last year, it invested an additional $2.5 billion in Flipkart. According to a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/companies/softbank-likely-to-part-sell-flipkart-stake-to-walmart/articleshow/63291759.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Times of India article</a> from 14 March, Walmart's potential bid to acquire more than 51% stake by investing up to $8-10 billion in Flipkart may just nudge SoftBank to part-sell its shares. However, Masayoshi Son told TOI a few days ago, “We are involved in discussions with key shareholders and the management. Either way, we are happy. It is nice to have good offers and we are always open to discussing different options and are always flexible for a good return and success of the company.” All this aside, another source said that the Flipkart board already agreed to Walmart’s offer a few days ago, thereby possibly thwarting Amazon’s intention to sweep in and win the game.
