June Releases: 8 Cool Books To Enrich Your Summer Reading

Writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, the Harry Potter creator wrote a 450-page crime novel called The Cuckoo’s Calling.
The book is billed as a “classic crime novel”, written in the style of PD James and Ruth Rendell, according to the Sunday Times.
Its plot centres on the death of a troubled model who falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony. Her brother calls in Cormoran Strike, a damaged war veteran turned private detective, to investigate her death.
Released in April, the book has generated heated speculation about the identity of the book’s author.
The secret could not last. Eventually it was noticed that Mr Galbraith and Miss Rowling shared the same publisher and editor.
Reviewers have described it as an “exhilarating debut” and marvelled at how a male author could ever describe women’s clothes so well.
When approached this weekend, Miss Rowling said: “I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience. It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name.”
The book is described as “a gripping, elegant mystery steeped in the atmosphere of London – from the hushed streets of Mayfair to the backstreet pubs of the East End to the bustle of Soho.”
After writing seven Harry Potter <keyword id="5050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">books</keyword>, Miss Rowling published her first fiction for adults last year. The Casual Vacancy, a novel about a small town racked with political infighting, sold well but received a mixed response from critics.

The beloved Harry Potter author has done her best to keep the details of her wealth under the invisibility cloak, but as of 2016, the New York Times estimated her net worth at $1.2 billion after taxes.Rowling, who is known to be private when it comes to sharing financial details, has denied being a billionaire, and Forbes estimated her fortune to be around $650 million in 2017.Since the series started in 1997, 500 million copies of Harry Potter books have been sold worldwide. The last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, broke records to become the fastest-selling fiction book of all time. By the New York Times' estimate, the Harry Potter novels have racked in at least $7.7 billion, and if J.K. Rowling took a standard authors royalty cut of 15%, she would have made at least $1.15 billion, and that's before accounting for the movie series, which have also grossed $7.7 billion, and if she received the standard 10 net percent participation, then she likely earned $770 million.And 2017 seems to be her best year to date. 10 years after the final Harry Potter book and six years after the final film, Rowling was the highest paid novelist in the world, and Forbes ranked her as the third highest paid celebrity, earning an estimated $95 million that year. In 2018, she earned another $54 million, so it's safe to say she hasn't lost any steam.Rowling kept her fans reading and watching with the production and script release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London and New York and the two Fantastic Beasts movies, and while the new films have grossed far less than the original series, the first Fantastic Beasts made a worldwide gross of $814 million. By Forbes' estimate, Rowling still received 10 million for the less-loved spin-off.Her magical wizarding world has also been expanded through Universal Parks and Resorts Harry Potter attractions in Orlando, LA, and Japan. Forbes estimates Rowling's received low double-digit millions from the parks, and she's released an entirely new book series under the author name Robert Galbraith. The first three Cormoran Strike books have sold 1.2 million copies, earning $9.9 million.Additionally, Rowling launched her self-proclaimed "digital heart of J.K. Rowling's wizarding world" website, Pottermore, in April 2012. Pottermore brought in $19 million in revenue in 2016, through multiple partnerships to sell e-books and audiobooks.Despite her huge success, Rowling's path to a magical fortune took more than a snap of her fingers. In an interview, Rowling told Jon Stewart that she spent a few years living in the UK with government assistance as a single mother, barely avoiding homelessness. After her success, she says she's now happy to stay in the UK and pay Britain's top tax rate of 45%. Discussing taxes, Rowling said, "I'm indebted to the welfare state. When my life hit rock bottom, that safety net was there to break the fall."Taxes aren't the only way Rowling pays back. Her charitable donations over the years have reached at least $150 million. Rowling founded the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the University of Edinburgh with a $16 million contribution. The clinic's named for her mother, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and passed away before Rowling became a published author. She's founded an international children's rights organization, the Lumos Foundation, as well as the Volant Charitable Trust to alleviate social deprivation across Scotland.But it's worth asking: how does the author treat herself?Well, she owns homes in Edinburgh, Perthshire, and Kensington. Rowling sold her 19th century Victorian mansion in 2012 for over $3.6 million. She and her husband, Neil Murray, had two interlinked, Hogwarts-like tree houses for their children built in the yard of their Edinburgh home for about $330,000. The couple had to apply for planning permission in order to knock down a $1.3 million house next door to make room for the tree house.And with countless movie premieres to attend, Rowling splurges on designer dresses, like this spring 2011 Oscar de la Renta gown. The book, a mystery novel, had been published under the name Robert Galbraith.

Robert Galbraith is married with two sons. After several years with the Royal Military Police, he was attached to the SIB (Special Investigation Branch), the plain-clothes branch of the RMP. The "Harry Potter" author was exposed by a newspaper earlier this month as the author of "The Cuckoo's Calling," a thriller ostensibly written by former soldier and first-time novelist Robert Galbraith.
The book was published in April to good reviews but modest sales, and there was speculation that Rowling or her publisher had leaked the <keyword id="6355005" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="News">news</keyword> to raise the book's profile.
But the law firm Russells, which has done work for Rowling, acknowledged that one of its partners had let the information slip to his wife's best friend, who tweeted it to a Sunday Times columnist.
Rowling sued the lawyer and the friend. Her attorney, Jenny Afia, told Britain's High Court on Wednesday that Rowling had been left "angry and distressed that her confidences had been betrayed."
"As a reflection of their regret for breach of the claimant's confidence, including frustrating the claimant's ability to continue to write anonymously under the name Robert Galbraith, the defendants are here today to apologize publicly to the claimant," Afia said.
Russells agreed to reimburse Rowling's legal costs and to make a "substantial" donation to The Soldiers' Charity, which helps former military personnel and their families.
Rowling also said she was donating all royalties from the book for the next three years to the charity.
The hero of her novel, Cormoran Strike, is a veteran who lost a leg in Afghanistan, and Rowling has said she drew on conversations with real soldiers to create the character.
"This donation is being made to The Soldiers' Charity partly as a thank you to the army people who helped me with research, but also because writing a hero who is a veteran has given me an even greater appreciation and understanding of exactly how much this charity does for ex-servicemen and their families, and how much that support is needed," Rowling said in a statement.
The writer said she had always intended to give part of Galbraith's royalties to the organization, "but I had not anticipated him making the best-seller list a mere three months after publication — indeed, I had not counted on him ever being there!"
Since Rowling was outed as the author, "The Cuckoo's Calling" has topped best-seller lists in Britain and the United States.
A second Cormoran Strike novel is due for publication next year.

JK Rowling Settles Legal Fight Against Lawyer Who Outed Her

2013 was a year of mystery and thrills, at least according to <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1884891&amp;highlight=">Amazon's list of best-selling adult books for the year</a>.
While contemporary romance dominated last year's list with the likes of "50 Shades of Grey," this year's top spot went to Dan Brown's thriller "Inferno." It was also a very <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-popular-books-at-the-new-york-public-library-in-september-2013-10">popular book at the New York Public Library</a> earlier this fall. 
"And The Mountains Echoed" by Khaled Hosseini and J.K. Rowling's crime thriller, "The Cuckoo's Calling," written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, rounded out the top three.
Amazon calculated its list of best-selling books by taking into account sales of print and Kindle edition books that were published in 2013. Check out the best-selling books below:
