AI models, including Google's Gemini, require a ton of training data to be competitive.So a natural next question is: Is Google using its massive trove of YouTube videos to further those AI ambitions?To help try to answer that question, we looked at what YouTube's CEO has said on the topic and what the platform's terms of service say, along with sending some clarifying questions to its parent company Google.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-youtube-ceo-neal-mohan-changing-way-we-watch-tv-2023-11">YouTube CEO Neal Mohan</a> was asked in an interview about the possibility of Google using YouTube's massive digital content library to train its AI models.In April, The New York Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/06/technology/tech-giants-harvest-data-artificial-intelligence.html">reported</a> that "Like OpenAI, Google transcribed YouTube videos to harvest text for its A.I. models, five people with knowledge of the company's practices said. That potentially violated the copyrights to the videos, which belong to their creators."Mohan said some YouTube creators have specific contracts that can allow their content to be used in AI training."Google uses YouTube content really in accordance again back with those terms of service or individual contracts that we might have with creators or uploaders to our platform," Mohan told Bloomberg's Emily Chang in a full-length <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZWUKxeIDWQ">interview</a>, some of which was first published in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-04/youtube-says-openai-training-sora-with-its-videos-would-break-the-rules">April.</a>"Lots of creators have different sort of licensing contracts in terms of their content on our platform, lots of rightsholders do," he added.Basically, it sounds like YouTube's CEO is saying that any AI training the company is doing with YouTube content, whether it's scraping video titles or transcripts or the video content itself, is being done in a fashion that honors the terms that content creators have agreed to."And so some portion of that YouTube corpus may be being used for those models, but it's going to be in concert with whatever the terms of service or the contract that that creator has signed before uploading their content to YouTube," Mohan said.As The New York Times reported, Google may not be the only company looking to YouTube for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-training-data-source-solutions-openai-meta-google-2024-4">AI training data</a>.In a March interview with The Wall Street Journal, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-mira-murati-openai-new-interim-ceo-2023-11">OpenAI CTO Mira Murati</a> was asked if the company's AI text-to-video generation tool Sora was trained on YouTube content. She responded that she was "actually not sure about that."Mohan says that, depending on what, if any, data OpenAI scraped, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/could-openai-be-violating-youtubes-terms-of-service-2024-4">could violate YouTube's terms of service</a>."Our terms of service does allow for some YouTube content like the title of a video or the channel name or the creator's name to be scraped because that's how you enable the open web for that content to show up and maybe show up in other search engines or what have you and be available that way," Mohan told Chang."But it does not allow for things like transcripts or video bits to be downloaded and that is a clear violation of our TOS," he said.YouTube's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/static?template=terms">terms of service</a> define content as "videos, audio (for example music and other sounds), graphics, photos, text (such as comments and scripts), branding (including trade names, trademarks, service marks, or logos), interactive features, software, metrics, and other materials whether provided by you, YouTube or a third-party."The terms say uploaders "retain ownership rights in your Content" but also "grant certain rights to YouTube and other users of the Service.""By providing Content to the Service, you grant to YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable license to use that Content (including to reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works, display and perform it) in connection with the Service and YouTube's (and its successors' and Affiliates') business, including for the purpose of promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service," the terms say.So while Mohan's remarks and YouTube's terms of service shed more light on the matter, it's still not entirely clear if and how the average YouTube video could be used by Google for AI training purposes. Business Insider reached out to Google to ask if the company was training any of its AI models or products, such as its recently announced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-unveils-ai-video-generator-veo-openai-sora-2024-5">text-to-video generator, Veo</a>, on the actual video files of YouTube content. We'll update this post if we hear back.

"We have a very light ad load compared to everyone else in the market, so there's room to grow on the capacity side."Max had 3.4 minutes of ads per hour as of the fourth quarter of 2023, which was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warner-bros-discovery-announces-details-of-new-streamer-max-2023-4">lower than most of the other streamers</a>.Perrette said Max would continue to take a lighter touch when it comes to its prestigious HBO content, however. Last year, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warner-bros-discovery-planning-streaming-ads-on-hbo-originals-2022-12">introduced pre-roll and sponsorship ads</a> to HBO shows but refrained from inserting ads in the middle of shows.Perrette also said Max is still in the early stages of selling its ad-supported tier and introducing new ad formats."On the pricing and ad capacity side, we're very early in terms of ad format innovation to drive more creative formats for partners and marketers to work with us," he said. "So those three levers are going to provide a great amount of scale, so I think we're in early innings in the advertising revenue growth stream."One of the big appeals of streaming initially was that it offered ad-free viewing. All the major streamers now have ad tiers, and while they started with a low number of ads per hour, ad loads are expected to creep up over time to make the numbers work. The newest player in streaming ads, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon">Amazon,</a> recently said it would increase its ad load in Prime Video after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-preview-shake-up-tv-ad-marketplace-2024-1">rolling out ads to the service in January.</a>Media players are still cognizant of not going back to the days of cable, though, where the ad loads can be twice that of streaming — or more."As others add a lot of inventory, we really like the idea that we're not doing that. You're not going to be interrupted watching 'House of the Dragon' or 'White Lotus,' at least for the foreseeable future," WBD president and CEO David Zaslav said on Thursday's earnings call. "We think part of the quality is the quality of the experience."Execs didn't give a timeframe for the changes. It's possible it'll wait until it names a new ad sales chief. The role is currently held by Jon Steinlauf, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jon-steinlauf-wbd-top-ad-salesman-to-leave-internal-memo-2024-10">who's set to leave the company by year's end</a>.WBD <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warner-bros-discovery-announces-details-of-new-streamer-max-2023-4">rolled out Max</a> in 2023 with ad-supported and ad-free tiers, combining HBO's premium content and originals like "Succession" with Discovery+'s reality programming like "90-Day Fiancé" and Warner Bros. films and the DC Universe.For the third quarter, WBD reported Max had its strongest quarterly gain in subscriptions since launching, adding 7.2 million subscribers for a total of 110.5 million. It also reported streaming profits of $289 million, up from $111 million in the year-ago quarter.Still, Max is a minor player in streaming, capturing just 1.2% of monthly streaming TV time in September, tied with Paramount+ and ahead only of Pluto TV, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nielsen.com/data-center/the-gauge/">Nielsen</a>. Rival Netflix, by comparison, added 5.1 million subscriptions in its most recent quarter and now has 282.7 million subscribers in total.

Warner Bros. Discovery says it will beef up ads on its Max streaming service

The government's decision to remove <keyword id="22142879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indexation-benefit" source="keywords">indexation benefit</keyword> on sale of old property will result in huge <keyword id="22544904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflow-of-black-money" source="keywords">inflow of black money</keyword> in <keyword id="19895040" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="real-estate" source="keywords">real estate</keyword> and investments in the sector will go down, AAP Rajya Sabha member <keyword id="19934326" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raghav-Chadha" source="keywords">Raghav Chadha</keyword> said on Thursday. Asking the government to roll back the proposal, Chadha, while taking part in the discussion on the <keyword id="19908389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Budget" source="keywords">Union Budget</keyword> 2024-25, said people will never be able to buy their "dream homes". "Restore indexation on <keyword id="20584761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">long-term capital gains</keyword>. Throughout the world, to woo investors to invest they are incentivised. In this country, by removing indexation we are disincentivising the investor class," he said, adding that removing indexation is not imposing <keyword id="19987671" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax" source="keywords">tax</keyword> but it is equivalent to "penalising investors". He said as a result of the step proposed by <keyword id="19956758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Minister" source="keywords">Finance Minister</keyword> Nirmala Sitharaman in the Budget 2024-25, individuals selling old properties will incur higher tax outgo. "If you do not bring back indexation three things will happen in this country. First, <keyword id="19895437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="keywords">investment</keyword> in real estate will go down and people will never be able to buy their 'dream homes'," Chadha asserted. He further said there will be undervaluation of property deals, people will buy properties at 'circle rates' and will never disclose the real value of the property. "Third, there will be a huge inflow of <keyword id="20592248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="black-money" source="keywords">black money</keyword> if you don't roll back this decision to withdraw indexation," he said. In the Union Budget 2024-25, the government proposed reducing the long-term capital gains tax on immovable properties to 12.5 per cent from 20 per cent, but removed the indexation benefits to adjust for inflation. As per the Memorandum to the Union Budget, with rationalisation of rate to 12.5 per cent, indexation available under Section 48 of the Income Tax Act has been proposed to be removed for calculation of any long-term capital gains, which is presently available for property, gold and other unlisted assets. Chadha also highlighted the high tax burden faced by common people and asked for a comprehensive review of both direct and indirect taxes. "We impose taxes like the Europeans do, to get services like sub-Saharan countries," he added. Taking part in the discussion, Debashish Samantaray of the BJD said the central government has given a raw deal to all eastern states like Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal in the Budget. He charged that in spite of Odisha giving 20 seats to the BJP, there was hardly anything for the state in the Union Budget. He noted that "regional aspiration should be addressed", and asked the central government to treat all states as equal. RJD's Sanjay Yadav attacked the government stating the Budget had nothing for the poor and marginalised and only catered to the rich and powerful. He noted that his party has been demanding special category status for Bihar for a very long time. Yadav said instead of dividing people on the basis of religion and caste, the government should work towards generating employment in the country. Medha Vishram Kulkarni of BJP and Rajani Ashokrao Patil of INC also participated in the debate. C V Shanmugham of AIADMK said allocation in the Budget does not significantly address the pressing needs of Tamil Nadu's infrastructure, health care, Social justice and education. The government has mentioned 76 projects in Tamil Nadu, but most of them are pre-existing ones getting a facelift. Moreover, in the Budget, no help in flood mitigation was provided, despite the state being prone to cyclones. There is no mention of a linkage of Kaveri and Godawari in the Budget, he said. Samirul Islam of AITC said this Budget is anti-people, anti-poor and anti-Bengal. It only satisfies Bihar and Andhra Pradesh's allies and is to save the government. "The Budget has deprived Bengal," he said. It has also ignored the people, especially the unorganised sector. 83 per cent of India's workforce is employed by unorganised sectors and failed to announce a comprehensive scheme for them and migrant workers, he said. M Mohamed Abdulla of the DMK said the Budget has provoked a constructive debate and disappointment in Tamil Nadu, a state known for its economic contributions. Tamil Nadu expected support and recognition in the budgetary allocations, but received nothing. The government is supposed to represent the people of the country as a whole. However, it is very unfortunate and unfair to see unequal distribution to the state governments, especially for the non-BJP ruled states like Tamil Nadu which provides the highest tax for the government, he said.

<keyword id="19956758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister" source="keywords">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Tuesday announced a <keyword id="20274081" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-guarantee-scheme" source="keywords">credit guarantee scheme</keyword> for facilitating <keyword id="22087606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="term-loans" source="keywords">term loans</keyword> for <keyword id="19910977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSMEs" source="keywords">MSMEs</keyword> to purchase machinery and equipment without collateral or third-party guarantee. In her Budget speech in the Lok Sabha, she said the Budget provides special attention to micro, small &amp; medium enterprises (MSMEs) and manufacturing, particularly labour-intensive units. "We have formulated a package, covering financing, <keyword id="20961204" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulatory-changes" source="keywords">regulatory changes</keyword> and technology support for MSMEs to help them grow and also compete globally, as mentioned in the interim budget," she said. The credit guarantee scheme for MSMEs in manufacturing will operate on the pooling of credit risks of such entities. "A separately constituted self-financing guarantee fund will provide, to each applicant, guarantee cover up to Rs 100 crore, while the loan amount may be larger," the minister announced in the Budget. The borrower will have to provide an upfront guarantee fee and an annual guarantee fee on the reduced loan balance. She also announced a new mechanism for facilitating the continuation of bank credit to MSMEs during their stress period. Sitharaman said that while being in the 'special mention account' (SMA) stage for reasons beyond their control, MSMEs need credit to continue their business and avoid getting into the NPA stage. "Credit availability will be supported through a guarantee from a government-promoted fund," she added. In another move to help MSMEs, the minister announced a new assessment model for credit to the sector. She said public sector banks will build their in-house capability to assess MSMEs for credit, instead of relying on external assessment. "They will also take a lead in developing or getting developed a new credit assessment model, based on the scoring of digital footprints of MSMEs in the economy," she added. The new assessment model, she said, is expected to be a significant improvement over the traditional assessment of credit eligibility based only on asset or turnover criteria. It will also cover MSMEs without a formal accounting system. Mohammad Athar (Saif), partner and leader capital projects and infrastructure development, PwC India, said the credit guarantee scheme and <keyword id="22514802" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce-export-hubs" source="keywords">e-commerce export hubs</keyword> for MSMEs will enable demand creation and boost India's aspiration of achieving USD 1 trillion in exports by 2030, driven by MSMEs. Sitharaman also announced that to enable MSMEs and traditional artisans to sell their products in international markets, e-commerce export hubs will be set up in public-private-partnership (PPP) mode. These hubs, under a seamless regulatory and logistic framework, will facilitate trade and export-related services under one roof. Vivek Jalan, Partner, Tax Connect, a multi-disciplinary firm, said, as requested by the trade and industry bodies and laid down by the Economic Survey, for MSME businesses, the compliance burden is also sought to be relaxed. Litigations will be reduced in the new <keyword id="22517694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivaad-Se-Vishwas-Scheme" source="keywords">Vivaad Se Vishwas Scheme</keyword>, he added. Rumki Majumdar, Economist, Deloitte India, said the credit guarantee schemes for MSMEs in the <keyword id="19955573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-sector" source="keywords">manufacturing sector</keyword>, facilitating term loans for the purchase of machinery, and formulating packages to finance technology support to them will go a long way to providing access to finance and increasing investments, which have been key challenges in the sector.
