The sitting candidate Asaduddin Owasi won the Hyderabad lok sabha seat with a margin of 2.8 lakh votes. This All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate secured a safe win, with no sweat as expected by many. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Dr Bhagvanth Rao and finished as a runner up just like last year. However, BJP redeemed itself in the twin city as its G Kishan Reddy won over Talasani Sai Kiran Yadav of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) by a margin of 62,000 votes. An anti-Modi stance The sitting MP Owasi, a well-known for his anti-Modi statements has managed to keep its legacy. Owasi invited ire in 2016 after he locked horns with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)’s Mohan Bhagwat. “I would never say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,” said Owasi after Bhagawat said every Indian should chant it. Owasi had stood his ground even when Modi wave was at its strongest in 2014, though his BJP counterpart Dr Bahgavanth Rao came very close with over 3 lakh votes, while Owasi finished with around five lakh votes. Nizam’ legacy Historically, Owasis and their city-based political party, have maintained much larger margins over their runner-ups, even when TDP and Congress were at their strongest. In fact, his father has won the same seat seven times, keeping the Charminar constituency with a majority Muslim population within the Owasi family, which heads All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). AIMIM was founded in 1927 under the auspices of Nawab Osman Ali Khan to be a pro-Nizam party during the times when the power of princely states was dwindling in a British-ruled India. But they came to take over the city only in 1984, after breaking Congress’ stronghold in the city and the state. Twin dilemma Secunderabad’s mandate unlike Hyderabad cannot be predicted as easily. In fact, the city is notorious for choosing a different party each year. Things got even murkier after the septuagenarian Bandaru Dattatreya was denied a ticket from BJP to contest the election. It went to G Kishan Reddy who is tasked with overcoming Anjan Yadav from Congress and Talasani Sai Kiran Yadav from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS); to retain the party in the seat. Hyderabad and Secunderabad voters did not have it easy this time around. They had to choose between seven candidates in Hyderabad and five in Secunderabad. In 2019, over 30 candidates contested from Secunderabad!! In Hyderabad too, voters had 14 candidates to choose from. They came from unknown parties like Majlis Bachao Tahreek, Pyramid Party of India, Indian Christian Secular Party and All India Azaad Congress Party; along with a clutch of independents. With many candidates came fewer voters. This time around the city recorded a dismal voter percentage at 40%.

Asaduddin Owasi wins the Hyderabad seat, extending history

Telangana CM <keyword id="80355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="K-Chandrasekhar-Rao">K Chandrasekhar Rao</keyword> is now in trouble as a case has been registered against him for alleged illegal tapping of phone calls of his Andhra Pradesh counterpart <keyword id="6354350" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chandrababu-Naidu">Chandrababu Naidu</keyword> in the wake of the cash-for-votes scam. 
 

	The case has been registered against KCR under Sections 464, 647, 471, 166, 167 and 120/B of IPC, according to a PTI report. 
	 

	Inspector of III-Town Police Station, B Tirumala Rao, said a Vizag-based advocate NVV Prasad has lodged a complaint against KCR for violating the basic rights of the Andhra Pradesh chief minister and "tarnishing" his image by tapping his telephone lines. 
	 

	In his complaint, the assistant Public Prosecutor accused the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) of deliberately trying to snoop on Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members. 
	 

	Meanwhile, a conversation in an audio tape between Chandrababu Naidu and nominated MLA Elvys Stephenson, aired in a section of local TV channels has given a new twist to the cash-for-votes controversy. On Sunday, <keyword id="2889050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Parakala-Prabhakar-Advisor">Parakala Prabhakar Advisor</keyword> (Communications) to the Andhra government strongly denied all such reports saying that the tapes were fabricated. The conversation suggested that the <keyword id="209302" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-chief-minister">Andhra chief minister</keyword> was giving "assurance of all sorts" to the MLA if he votes for TDP nominee in the Telangana Legislative Council election. Prabhakar further alleged that the <keyword id="541763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telangana-Government">Telangana government</keyword> is only trying to malign the image of Naidu by resorting to such cheap tactics. "It is not the chief minister's conversation. How come they are available outside. The Telangana government has to give answer to this. The Telangana CM and home minister should give answers," Parakala said. 
	 

	The anti-corruption bureau of Telangana is in the process of questioning TDP MLA Revanth Reddy and two others who have been arrested in cash-for-vote case.

When the country began its first phase of polling on April 11, 2019, Telangana voted from all its constituencies. The party is not facing the elections with the same enthusiasm given by the overwhelming victory. The state sees a triangular contest and the other parties in opposition namely the Congress and the BJP are now focusing on a select few seats hoping to win them for the parliament. The Nizamabad constituency has claimed the maximum amount of attention from the whole of the country as there are 185 candidates lined up to try their luck during 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all of them eagerly waiting for the results. Telangana Lok Sabha Election Result 2019: TRS wins the state with 9 seats

Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (<keyword id="43749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRS">TRS</keyword>) has consolidated its position in the Nagarjuna Sagar Assembly constituency, the counting trend showed on Sunday. After 11 rounds of counting, <keyword id="11074436" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="nomula-bhagat">Nomula Bhagat</keyword> of the TRS was leading by 9,034 votes over his nearest rival K. Jana Reddy of the <keyword id="1571" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-party">Congress party</keyword>. The TRS candidate polled 38,924 votes while Jana Reddy secured 29,890 votes. Counting of votes polled in the April 17 bypoll began Sunday morning. The counting was taking place in two large halls, each with seven tables. About 400 officials were involved in counting and related activity. Officials expect the counting to be completed in 25 rounds. The constituency had witnessed 86.18 per cent polling on April 17 despite the Covid-19 surge. Out of the 2.20 lakh voters, 1.89 lakh had cast their votes. As many as 41 candidates, including three women, contested the bypoll, which was necessitated due to the death of sitting legislator Nomula <keyword id="240868" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narasimhaiah">Narasimhaiah</keyword> of the TRS. The ruling party fielded Narasimhaiah's son Nomula Bhagat, a debutant who took on veteran <keyword id="1575" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> leader and seven-time MLA Jana Reddy. In 2018, Nomula Narasimhaiah had won the seat by defeating Jana Reddy of the Congress by about 8,000 votes. Nomula polled 83,655 votes while Jana Reddy had garnered 75,884 votes. BJP's K. Niveditha Reddy had polled only 2,675 votes. The TRS had polled 46.34 per cent votes while the Congress secured 42.04 per cent vote and the BJP could get only 1.48 per cent votes. It is led by Mayawati of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="akhilesh-yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> of <keyword id="6354265" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), who were former foes turned friends; proving yet again politics makes strange bedfellows. These are the clear sides in the election so far and one of the leaders is likely to become the next Prime Minister. However, the BJD, the YSR Congress, its state rival TDP, and the Telegana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) led by K Chandrashekhar Rao who are yet to pick sides, will have fewer seats but an outsized say in deciding the winner of this Lok Sabha election, in the case of an utterly fractured mandate. The three states put together have 86 seats at stake in the Lok Sabha. Even half of those seats will wield significant power in case any of the other three national coalitions fail to cross the halfway mark. ‘Special’ unity The one factor binding four out of the five regional parties is the demand for ‘special status’ for their respective states. Special status is given to states with historic disadvantages be it geographic issues like tough terrains or unviable state finances. It provides them with autonomy like the ability to establish development boards, and decide on reservations. Special status has also been the bone of contention between BJP and TDP. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from the NDA, after BJP refused the status, as Naidu re-builds the state after Telangana split from AP. What is bringing these parties together is a recent comment from the union finance minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley that categorically dismissed the demand for <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/apr/04/arun-jaitley-against-special-status-special-financial-packages-for-states-1960238.html">special status for AP</a>, saying the ‘time for seeking special status is over’. While JD(U) has denied any attempt to break away from the NDA, it has enough common ground with the other four parties that can influence government formation. This may be the prelude to hectic parleys after the results on May 23.

Only News 18-IPSOS poll believes they will win 14 seats, while India Today-Axis poll believes they will win anywhere between zero to four! Congress’ partner DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) on the other hand, has been a clear favourite. Four out of five polls say that they will win more than 25 seats, while two of them will say that they will win more than 30 seats. Naidu’s fury Both Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and BJP could have gained from an alliance, a second time around. But that was not to be. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as his state was not given special status. BJP also failed to forge another alliance in the state. Most polls believe that YSR Congress (YSR-C), headed by Jagan Reddy could be a net gainer as electorate is exasperated with BJP and TDP alike. Four exit polls predict that YSR-C will win over 15 seats, whereas TDP will be lucky to get 10. Only Today’s Chanakya believes that TDP will get 17 seats. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which is headed by K Chandrasekhara Rao, known as KCR, is expected to come back with a thumping majority. BJP’s arch rival Congress which struck a deal with United Democratic Front (UDF) is expected to win 15 seats, according to most polls. The only good news for BJP comes from Karnataka. Almost all the exit polls suggest that BJP will over 20 seats in the current elections, leaving the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular combine with less than half of it.

India’s currency and stock markets are in for a rocky week as an upset for the country’s ruling party looms in some state elections

NEW DELHI: Though exit polls predict BJP may not need to fish for allies, the party is looking to keep lines of communication open with regional parties like BJD, Telangana Rashtra Samithi and YSR <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. 
 
BJP leaders feel these parties can be part of a “greater NDA” either as formal allies or outside supporters and help boost the new government’s numbers while weakening anti-BJP numbers in Parliament. 
 
Such an outreach was very much part of BJP’s plans, but discussions with RSS (reported by TOI on Monday) have given the efforts a fillip as the party looks to widen its representation in the new Lok Sabha. 
 
RSS’s advice that it would be useful to deny Congress likely allies and deepen the party’s isolation matches BJP’s own assessment that adding partners would be useful in shepherding legislation through the upper House in particular. 
 While YSR Congress chief <keyword id="6357475" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jaganmohan-Reddy">Jaganmohan Reddy</keyword> is a bitter rival of BJP’s partner TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in Seemandhra, the saffron party feels a working arrangement may still be viable. 
 
Jaganmohan’s relations with Congress had worsened ahead of elections and BJP leaders feel being an outside supporter of an NDA government may not be as difficult a task as might appear at first glance. 
 On his part, Jaganmohan has indicated he may have no qualms about supporting <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> as prime minister and BJP leaders feel state-level equations need not be a hurdle at the Centre. 
 <keyword id="78324" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="TRS-chief">TRS chief</keyword> K Chandrasekhar Rao has not been averse to doing business with BJP and talks were on till as late as April before the saffron party finalized its poll tie-up with TDP. 
 
KCR’s top priority is to secure the Telangana prize by forming the first state government in India’s 29th state and would not want to be on the wrong side of the Centre as long as he has the numbers in the state assembly. 
 
The astute TRS chief can be expected to weigh the situation keeping in mind whether he needs Congress in the new Telangana assembly or can make do on his own. 
 
Allying with BJP does not pose problems for TRS as the former has strongly supported Telangana and has been committed to smaller states. In contrast, KCR adroitly avoided a merger or even an alliance with Congress as he sensed the ruling party’s diminished electoral equity. 
 
In the case of BJD, BJP ensured its channels with Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik remained open before and during the elections despite strongly challenging the regional party’s hold on the state. 
 
Having been given a scare by BJP, Patnaik may now be inclined to renew his ties with the party he broke with in 2009, delivering a severe blow to LK Advani’s prime ministerial candidature. 
 
More importantly, Patnaik will need a stake in the Centre to convince voters that it is worth their while to support BJD with BJP aggressively looking to replace Congress as the main opposition. 
 
BJP leaders feel the BJD ranks high on their list as a potential ally and can help the party mop up the anti-Congress space.
