<ul class="summary-list"><li>As a parent and a teacher I've been on both sides of the relationship when kids are back in school. </li><li>I recommend parents reach out early to their kids' teachers to have a relationship. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/8-ways-being-a-teacher-prepared-me-for-parenthood-2023-6">As a parent for 15 years and a teacher for 22 years</a>, I have had the pleasure — and the difficulty — of wearing both hats in the parent/teacher partnership. I have been on the receiving end of a <a href="https://www.insider.com/elementary-school-teacher-on-what-she-wishes-parents-knew-2022-12">scathing parent email</a>, and on the flip side, I have received negative feedback about my child from a teacher.</p><p>Of course, <a href="https://www.insider.com/high-school-teacher-shares-one-piece-of-advice-for-parents-2023-2">teachers and parents</a> will have not-so-pleasant feedback from time to time — not all conversations will be sunshine and rainbows when we are helping children grow and learn. However, even when the conversation reaches into difficult topics, teachers and <a href="https://www.insider.com/teachers-what-parents-should-never-do-2019-9">parents can always work together</a> to partner for the student's success.  </p><h2><strong>Plant the seeds early in the year </strong></h2><p>Whether your child is 3 or 18, reaching out to their teacher early in the school year will start the partnership off on a good foot. Depending on the child's age, the frequency and depth of the communication will taper off as the child gains independence, but a quick introduction note to the teacher is always appropriate. Here is an example of a brief introductory email from a parent to a teacher: </p><p>"Hello Ms. Nwodo, </p><p>My daughter Aleah Cameron-Smith is in your physics class this year. She is excited about your class because she has heard about the interesting labs. We are looking forward to meeting you at Parent Night. Please reach out to us if you need anything. </p><p>Thank you, Dr. Julia Cameron and Mr. Derrick Smith 314-159-2653"</p><p> A quick note like this serves a few key purposes: You are introducing yourself and your child — including your name with honorifics and phone number, which is helpful for teachers to know when they need to reach you later. You are extending a welcome of communication if the teacher needs anything in the future, such as support with your child academically or behaviorally. And you are expressing gratitude and interest in the teacher's work and efforts. </p><h2><strong>Modes of communication</strong></h2><p>Beyond a basic introduction at the beginning of the year, it might be necessary to communicate with the teacher for additional reasons.</p><p>If a question can be answered on the class website or by reaching out to the school office, then do so rather than contacting the teacher. A teacher's day is far too busy to answer questions that can be easily looked up.</p><p>If you are concerned about your child's learning or performance in their class, email a request for a phone along with the courtesy of the reason for the request. "Ms. Nwodo, Would you have time for a phone conversation to discuss Aleah's progress with the current unit?" Giving a "heads up" allows the teacher to properly prepare resources for the conversation.</p><p>If your child is younger, it may be necessary to email a note that does not need a phone call or meeting as a follow-up. When parents share information about their children, teachers are better equipped to support student learning.      </p><p>If you have a pre-teen or teen, coach them on how to communicate with their teachers as a first point of contact. If your teen is struggling in the class or needs to update the teacher, help them draft an email to the teacher or have them practice how they will start the conversation face-to-face with the teacher. </p><h2><strong>When to get support </strong></h2><p>Unfortunately, situations will arise in which the teacher/parent partnership is not quite clicking. <a href="https://barkleypd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steve Barkley</a>, an education consultant,  suggests seeking out help from the school counselor to serve as a liaison. A campus learning support specialist might also be a beneficial resource for building a partnership.</p><p>In extreme circumstances, it might be necessary to seek out the guidance of the teacher's supervisor or principal. Escalating a concern about a teacher to a school administrator can damage the partnership with a teacher. However, if the teacher is non-responsive, dismissive, or unprofessional, then support is certainly necessary. </p><p>Parents are their children's first teachers. Parents know their children in a different way than teachers know them — and vice versa. By opening up the lines of communication between parents and teachers, the students will be supported in their learning and growth throughout their years in school. Parents, remember next August to start the year with an introductory email to your child's teacher. It is a small gesture to launch a strong partnership.  </p>

Parent-teacher communication is important outside of conferences. I speak with 15 years as a parent and 22 as a teacher.

"The possibilities are endless. Honestly." </p><p>Hough, who was a professional dancer and choreographer on "Dancing With the Stars" he became a judge, recalled how much he loved "stepping into the unknown" of choreographing routines for his season 18 celebrity partner Paralympian snowboarder Amy Purdy, who is a double amputee. In a 2018 video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6A2aq0Id1o&amp;ab_channel=LifeinMotionwithDerekHough">where Hough interviewed Purdy</a>, they explained that they'd often come up with choreography together rather than him "teaching" her a dance, which is more commonly what happens with pros and their celebrity dance partners on the reality competition series.</p><div type="image" title="derek hough emmys 2013" height="578" width="770" msid="94764693" hostid="261" sizebytes="22388"></div><p>He said that even though he doesn't consider himself "familiar" with adaptive dancing, he's "intrigued" and "curious" about what the show could do with it if a wheelchair user were to compete one day.</p><p>Hough added that dancing with Purdy taught him how to "innovate" routines more because there was "no rule book" they could refer to on how to be the best partners for each other. </p><p>As for the most impactful lesson he's learned from one of his celebrity partners? That honor once again goes to Purdy. </p><p>He said that she taught him that when we face difficulties in life, instead of asking "Why is this happening to me?" we should ask "Why is this happening<em> for</em> me?"</p><p>"It just changes your perspective in moments of difficulty and challenges and things that we called problems, where it's like, where's the gift? Where's the gift in this challenge? Where's the gift in this problem? (<a href="https://www.insider.com/house-of-the-dragon-best-tv-show-of-the-year-2022-12">A tie with "House of the Dragon."</a>)</li><li>Though its pilot premiered in late 2021, most of its episodes aired in 2022. </li></ul><p>"Abbott Elementary" is the rare TV show <a href="https://www.emmys.com/shows/abbott-elementary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that garners critical acclaim</a> while dominating Twitter's trending topics, and its widespread success boils down to one thing: joy. </p><p>The series centers on a group of passionate, dedicated school educators (and a slightly-tone deaf principal), including second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, played by the series creator <a href="https://www.insider.com/quinta-brunson-husband-abbott-elementary-representation-television-2022-11">Quinta Brunson</a>.</p><p>Brunson previously <a href="https://www.insider.com/abbott-elementary-quinta-brunson-interview-2022-2">told Insider</a> that she drew inspiration for the Philadelphia public school setting from her mother, Norma Jean Brunson, a retired Philadelphia kindergarten teacher who also taught at her daughter's public school.</p><p>During their drive to school, the <a href="https://www.insider.com/gabrielle-dennis-season-3-a-black-lady-sketch-show-2022-5">"A Black Lady Sketch Show" star</a> would hear her mom bond with carpooling coworkers about their workplace issues and the "small joys" of teaching, like Pizza Fridays or the look on a child's face when they finally understood a concept. </p><div type="image" title="Quinta Brunson Abbott Elementary" height="2033" width="2710" msid="96524358" hostid="261" sizebytes="980328"></div><h2>Balance is key to the dynamic success of 'Abbott Elementary'</h2><p>The teachers and staff at the fictional Willard R. Abbott Elementary School often face <a href="https://www.insider.com/abbott-elementary-creator-says-people-asked-for-school-shooting-episode-2022-5">seemingly insurmountable challenges</a>, but they also never take themselves too seriously.</p><p>In a season two episode titled "Juice," Janine's desire for healthier juice options in the cafeteria hilariously leads to a nightmare scenario involving distracted students, full bladders, and dilapidated bathrooms.</p><p>But <a href="https://www.insider.com/abbott-elementary-quinta-brunson-reveals-job-adult-hotline-2022-3">as we're laughing</a> at the idea of Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) taking a baseball bat to a broken toilet to make the school system work for her, we're also reminded of how grossly underfunded and underappreciated inner-city public schools and their workers truly are.</p><p>Middle-school <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abbott-elementary-teachers-quitting-pandemic-quinta-brunson-2022-2">English teacher Sydnee Harris told Insider</a> that "Abbott Elementary" is the topic of conversation in many teachers' lounges because of storylines similar to the one on "Juice." The show depicts the reality of the ridiculous situations educators are sometimes forced to overcome without making fun of the profession.</p><div type="image" title="Janelle James" height="2001" width="2669" msid="96524360" hostid="261" sizebytes="199114"></div><p>As for the characters, each role on "Abbott" is lovable, not in spite of, but because of their flaws. Brunson may not have won an acting Emmy for her performance (yet), but she did <a href="https://www.insider.com/quinta-brunson-jimmy-kimmel-lies-down-during-emmys-speech-2022-9">take home an Emmy for best comedy writing</a> this year and the multidimensional characters at the heart of her pilot script are why.</p><p>There's no better example of this complexity at work than Principal Ava Coleman, (played brilliantly by Janelle James). Viewers simultaneously laugh and cringe at her behavior because, yes, frustrating bosses are a universally relatable experience. But we also learn more about the things that make her human, like her family and her love life.</p><h2>We don't normally expect sitcoms like 'Abbott' to hit us deep in our emotional core</h2><p>Many sitcoms don't want to touch the uncomfortable topics that adult millennials like Janine usually avoid speaking about in everyday life. But Brunson and her team did that on the season two Halloween episode, "Candy Zombies." </p><p>While Abbott's staff tries to control hyper children who have found the hidden candy stash and taken over the school, Janine is forced to face the fact that it's been hard for her to make friends as an adult — especially after her recent breakup. When an old high-school friend invites her to a party, she initially declines. After failing to make plans with someone at school, she realizes she should go to the party unless her ultimate goal in life is to become a lonely cat lady. </p><p>"I think I've been avoiding making new friends because the unknown — it's scary," Janine tells the fictional documentary cameras. She also tells her colleagues Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter) and Barbara that starting her life over after a long-term relationship feels "really hard." </p><p>These are basic truths in life that some adults choose to ignore in favor of pretending like everything is fine. If viewers aren't in touch with the areas where they need to grow, unexpected storylines like this could have them reaching for tissues. Slow burns aren't groundbreaking by any means, but still, it's impossible not to root for the potential romance — even if Greg <em>is</em> constantly (and maddeningly!) sending Janine mixed signals. We just want the staff of "Abbott Elementary" to be as happy as they make us every week.</p><p>"Abbott" is proof that laughter does inspire change in the world. In her quest to shine a light on teachers' day-to-day lives, Brunson and her team are forcing the nation to confront the flaws of our public school system in a way that's palatable to the masses.</p><p>What they've accomplished with this classic workplace sitcom is nothing short of brilliant. </p><p><em>"Abbot Elementary" was named Insider's best TV show of 2022. Over the past year, educators have been tasked with switching from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-say-classrooms-not-safe-enough-for-in-person-learning-2020-9">in-person teaching</a> to remote learning to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sc/how-students-and-teachers-can-navigate-hybrid-education-2021-7">hybrid classroom models</a>. <a href="https://www.insider.com/teachers-face-burnout-year-pandemic-era-learning-2021">Burnout</a> for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-covid-exhausted-school-delta-variant-burnout-2021-8">teachers</a> has been severe since the start of the pandemic, and many are <a href="https://www.insider.com/teachers-face-burnout-year-pandemic-era-learning-2021">quitting</a> the profession altogether. <keyword id="37180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="schools" source="Orion">Schools</keyword> have begun offering <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/schools-giving-bonuses-other-perks-attract-teachers-burnout-2021-8">sign-on bonuses</a> to attract staff.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">And it's not just teachers who have been facing difficulties. Parents have grappled with the the challenges of <a href="https://www.insider.com/parents-wont-homeschool-in-coronavirus-pandemic-because-of-stress-2020-3">home-schooling</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-report-proves-working-parents-need-schools-reopen-now-economy-2021-5">lack of childcare</a> set off by school closures. And the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homeschooling-mistakes-parents-should-avoid-according-to-experts-2020-9">stress</a> of all these changes has also weighed heavily on school-aged <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trauma-psychologist-how-parents-help-kids-feel-safe-school-reopening-2020-8">children</a>, many of whom struggled with <a href="https://www.insider.com/fully-remote-students-are-less-engaged-with-learning-classmates-2021-3">remote learning</a>. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;"><keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">Education</keyword> has long been a philanthropic focus for Dollar General and the company's namesake literacy foundation, and the donation is being made in honor of World Teachers' Day. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The Dollar General Literacy Foundation will pour $3 million into youth literacy grants. A total of $1.45 million will go into a new partnership with education nonprofit DonorsChoose. And the remaining $50,000 will be donated to a local literacy non-profit on World Teachers' Day.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Over the past year, the pandemic has had a significant impact on education, with over 55 million students across the United States impacted in some form or fashion," Denine Torr, Dollar General Literacy Foundation executive director and Dollar General vice president of corporate social responsibility, said. "As we started into this back to school season, we were like, 'Let's do something that brings joy.'"</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Through its partnership with DonorsChoose, the foundation also is seeking to address the issue of educators losing materials, like classroom book sets, school library books, arts and crafts supplies that "never made it back" to the classrooms after students were sent home thanks to COVID-19. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"The reason why we love that so much is because teachers get to go in and say specifically what supplies they want," Torr said. "Then they get those needs met. We all know that teachers spend way too much money out of their pockets. Most classrooms are grossly underfunded, even before the pandemic."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The youth literacy grants are slated to go to "hometown grassroots programs, local schools and libraries, and nonprofit organizations out there that are really helping kids learn and thrive," Torr said. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Torr also spoke about how the issue of education and literacy has become so important to Dollar General. In 1939, businessman J.L Turner founded the company that would one day become known as Dollar General.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"He was functionally illiterate," Torr said. "He had to drop out in the third grade to take care of the family farm after his father passed away unexpectedly."</p><p>The Turner family established the Dollar General Literacy Foundation in 1993, to honor his legacy. So far, the foundation has donated over $203 million to literacy advancement.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"J.L. Turner had to create a Fortune 100 company with a limited education," Torr said. "But how do we take that passion, that knowledge, that potential in each child and then give them the opportunity to grow and thrive. We invest in those programs that give them that opportunity and make sure that it doesn't matter if they're in rural, suburban, or urban areas, that it doesn't matter what zip code they're in or what stage they're in. It's just about creating opportunity for all students to thrive."</p>

Dollar General is giving $4.5 million to support teachers and students struggling during COVID-19

LeTendre, professor of <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword>al administration at Penn State, says education reforms could help.</li><li>Comprehensive recruitment and professional development could help address issues like teacher shortages. </li></ul><p><a href="https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/worldteachersday">World Teachers' Day</a>, held on October 5 each year since 1994, is an annual event to reflect on the progress teachers have made.</p><p>But in many countries, including the United States, the <a href="https://repository.upenn.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1226&amp;context=gse_pubspubs">professional status</a> of teachers has declined in the last decade.</p><p>For example, studies in <a href="https://www.routledge.com/A-Class-Act-Changing-Teachers-Work-the-State-and-Globalisation/Robertson/p/book/9780815335788">Britain</a>, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/0022487105282579">Japan,</a> and <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/00071005.2018.1497770">Hong Kong</a> show an erosion of teacher autonomy and public confidence in teachers, which leads to teachers feeling disempowered and demoralized. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1086/662010">Job satisfaction</a> has also <a href="https://www.metlife.com/about-us/newsroom/2012/march/metlife-survey-of-the-american-teacher-finds-decreased-teacher-s/">deteriorated</a> among teachers in the US, where teacher education itself has <a href="https://www.routledge.com/The-Struggle-for-the-Soul-of-Teacher-Education/Zeichner/p/book/9781138064096">become a target</a> of policymakers who think it requires higher standards and greater state control.</p><p>As a researcher who studies <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&amp;user=VCt87SkAAAAJ&amp;view_op=list_works&amp;sortby=pubdatertby=pubdate">teacher reform initiatives around the world</a>, I have seen very few reforms <a href="https://doi.org/10.1108/S1479-3679(2013)0000019016">do what they were designed to do</a>, which is to improve the quality of teachers' work and their professional standing.</p><p>With colleagues in the US, Sweden, and South Korea, I researched <a href="https://pages.pedf.cuni.cz/uvrv/files/2019/10/IRDE_Seminar-LeTendre_SettingTeacherPolicy24-10-2019-1.pdf">teacher-focused policies</a> in four Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) and four East Asian countries (Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea) from 1995 to 2020.</p><p>All eight countries are stable, wealthy democracies whose school systems are generally regarded as having solid - even exemplary - educational systems. In other words, one might not expect them to be that worried about their teachers. Yet over the 25-year period that we studied, these countries collectively passed 56 national policies that were specifically aimed at reforming some part of teacher career development, education, or training.</p><p>Sweden was the most active with 12 reforms, while Finland passed only two.</p><p>Sometimes these reforms didn't really help teachers. In fact, some <a href="https://eera-ecer.de/ecer-programmes/conference/26/contribution/50376/">reforms actually undermined the quality</a> of the national teaching force.</p><p>Here is what we found is mostly likely to work when it comes to new teacher policies.</p><h2>Make policies comprehensive</h2><p><a href="https://www.tcpress.com/improving-teacher-quality-9780807771228">Comprehensive teacher policies</a> address at least three key areas: recruitment and training, hiring and placement, and professional development. This is crucial in addressing significant problems like teacher shortages, where focusing on recruiting and training alone <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2015/03/30/395322012/the-hidden-costs-of-teacher-turnover">has not worked, at least in the US.</a></p><p>However, most of the eight countries in our study passed polices that target only one of these stages. Some nations addressed more than one, but the reforms were often uncoordinated. And, these nations were also influenced by international organizations like the <a href="https://www.oecd.org/about/">Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development</a>, resulting in contradictory reforms that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/00313831.2016.1172502">undermined the effectiveness of national systems</a>.</p><p>Denmark was the only nation that specifically <a href="https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/education/oecd-reviews-of-evaluation-and-assessment-in-education-denmark-2011_9789264116597-en">targeted recruitment</a> by trying to recruit teachers from the best college graduates. Sweden was the only country to pass a policy vaguely related to teacher placement. They started <a href="https://www.lararforbundet.se/artiklar/fast-track-an-opportunity-for-newly-arrived-teachers">"fast track" programs</a> that prepare immigrants with teacher qualifications to teach in Swedish schools. These programs were spread around the country in six universities that would encourage placing the graduates outside the Stockholm area.</p><p>Instead, countries concentrated on policies that set standards for teacher certification, improved work conditions and extended opportunities for professional development. While these are important areas, they don't address crucial bottlenecks in recruitment and distribution. Simply setting standards does not guarantee that qualified teachers will be available where they are needed. For example, due to shortages in certain subjects, teachers are often assigned to teach courses that they are not qualified to teach - something called <a href="https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9789463009539">"out-of-field" teaching</a>.</p><p>Despite all the teacher-focused reforms that have occurred, <a href="https://doi.org/10.3102/0013189X07308739">access to qualified teachers</a> remains a major source of educational inequality in the world today.</p><h2>Focus on teachers' actual needs</h2><p>There is <a href="https://www.doi.org/10.1108/S1479-3679201527">international consensus</a> that effective teacher education and development involves offering teachers multiple opportunities to <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/345209973_Opportunities_to_study_practice_and_rehearse_teaching_in_teacher_education_An_international_perspective">practice and reflect on</a> actual teaching practices. This means professional development should be integrated into local schools where local practitioners can identify the problems they face while working with experts to identify solutions. Yet few of the policies we analyzed indicated this as a goal.</p><p>One example that did engage teachers was the <a href="https://www.eera-ecer.de/ecer-programmes/conference/20/contribution/34416/">OSAAVA program</a> in Finland, which supported projects where teachers and schools could identify what expertise they already had available, areas that needed more professional development and how to sustain this professional development over time.</p><p>In addition to being focused on actual problems, <a href="https://learningpolicyinstitute.org/product/effective-teacher-professional-development-report">good professional development</a> supports collaboration between teachers, universities and the communities where they work. In most industries, professional development is created by expert practitioners in the field. Teacher professional development, however, is mostly <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/00071005.1982.9973622">created by academics in universities</a>. To achieve effective professional development often requires reforming the relationship between universities and schools.</p><h2>Include teachers in the process</h2><p>In both Nordic and East Asian countries, governments often passed reforms related to teacher professional development by setting standards, but few governments involved teachers in the process. This undermines teachers' professional status and autonomy. It also means that the professional development is less likely to meet teachers' needs.</p><p>In Japan, in the early 2000s, the government took what was once a teacher-led form of professional development, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Lesson_Study.html?id=vNsQGKrC-hwC">Lesson Study</a>, and integrated it into required professional development. This weakened the collaboration which research had shown to be essential for <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tate.2018.10.012">effective teacher learning</a>. In 2017, I conducted interviews with teacher educators who complained about the long-term decline in Lesson Study quality. Indeed, the Lesson Study sessions I observed in 2017 were less well attended and lacked the collaborative support that I had witnessed while <a href="https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300182675/learning-be-adolescent">researching Japanese schools</a> in the 1980s and 1990s.</p><p>In contrast, the "<a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/02619768.2021.1913117">Teach Less, Learn More</a>" reform passed in Singapore in 2005 allowed schools to hire more staff so that teachers had more time to study how to better present lessons or to review and redesign the curriculum.</p><h2>Why it matters</h2><p>Decades of scientific research confirm that quality teachers <a href="https://www.rand.org/education-and-labor/projects/measuring-teacher-effectiveness/teachers-matter.html">improve student achievement</a>. At the same time we see the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/4faf6c4e-1d84-11e9-b2f7-97e4dbd3580d">rise of authoritarian regimes</a> and anti-democratic movements across the globe. <a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/2053168015613360">Education has a democratizing effect</a>, particularly in poor countries. I believe that, now more than ever, every nation must support teachers as they provide the education and critical thinking skills that children will need to confront antidemocratic sentiment and resolve the significant problems of the future.</p><p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/gerald-k-letendre-185061">Gerald K. Teacher shortages are hurting students around the world - here's how education reform could boost recruitment

She supports his intention to run.</li></ul><p>Political advisors had been in Jill Biden's living room for hours, trying to persuade her husband to run for president, while she sat by the pool, "fuming."</p><p>She and Joe Biden, then a senator, had already decided against a second presidential bid in 2004. She had "forbidden any campaign talk."</p><p>And then, her temper got the best of her.</p><p>"A Sharpie caught my eye," she wrote in her memoir "Where The Light Enters." "I drew <em>NO</em> on my stomach in big letters, and marched through the room in my bikini.</p><p>"Needless to say, they got the message," she continued.</p><p>Twenty years later, the first lady still holds the power of "NO" when it comes to her husband's political aspirations. </p><p>She wields this influence as her family endures enormous scrutiny over their son Hunter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-possible-charges-how-white-house-president-bracing-2022-10">facing possible criminal charges</a> and questions about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-age-president-running-white-house-2024-2022-9">Joe Biden's</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-a-presidents-brain-can-change-with-age-2022-8">mental acuity</a> as he approaches his <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/11/bidens-about-to-turn-80-dont-expect-a-blowout-birthday-bash-00061090">80th birthday</a>. </p><p>That approach has been decidedly rocky. In recent weeks, Joe Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-apologizes-to-dead-congresswomans-family-wheres-jackie-walorski-gaffe-2022-10">called out</a> for Rep. Jackie Walorski — she is dead — at a public event and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-biden-mispronounces-uk-pm-rishi-sunak-name-rashi-sanuk-2022-10">mispronounced the name</a> of the United Kingdom's prime minister, Rishi Sunak.</p><p>When asked last week if his wife backs him running, the president's awkward, lengthy pause, prompting a nudge from MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart — "Mr. President?" — only added to Republican criticism online, with GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel calling the exchange<a href="https://twitter.com/GOPChairwoman/status/1583891185537798144"> "scary."</a></p><p>The president ultimately said his wife thinks "that we're doing something very important, and that I shouldn't walk away from it." He has his "intention" is to run in 2024. The president has not, however, made a formal decision and has not officially filed re-election campaign paperwork that would trigger various federal requirements, such as adhering to fundraising limits and disclosing campaign income and expenditures.</p><p>Jill Biden, for her part, isn't expected break out the Sharpie again, at least anytime soon. Evidence of her support for her husband's presidency can be found all over the midterm elections campaign trail. Between writing classes she teaches at Northern Virginia Community College, she has been zig-zagging across the country for campaign events and fundraisers, raising millions of dollars for Democrats and touting Biden's achievements in office, from gun safety legislation to prescription drug affordability.</p><p>"Just imagine what he could do with a few more partners in Congress," she said at a recent fundraiser in Nashville.</p><p>Jill Biden's advice will be the primary advice Joe Biden will rely on as he makes that decision, said South Carolina Sen. Dick Harpootlian, a former state party chairman and member of the Biden 2020 finance committee.</p><p>"Joe Biden wouldn't have run in '20 if Jill Biden had not wanted him to run and he won't run in '24 if Jill Biden doesn't want him to run," he told Insider.</p><p>Former US Sen. Ted Kaufman, Biden's longtime chief of staff in the Senate, called Jill Biden "a full partner" and "someone he turns to" in his decision making.</p><p>The couple, Jill Biden <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00CNrKJCK4Y">said this month</a> on NBC's Today show, has been "a little bit too busy" to discuss 2024, but she affirmed her support.</p><p>"I'm sure it will be a discussion," Jill Biden said. "Look at all Joe has done. The president lost his first wife and daughter in a 1972 car crash. Jill Biden <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/jill-biden-talks-kelly-clarkson-about-divorce-over-time-you-t209939">divorced</a> her first husband after five years and married Joe Biden two years later. Together, they have one biological daughter, Ashley, and they raised the president's two sons, Hunter and Beau, who died from brain cancer in 2015.</p><p>She doesn't think of herself as an advisor to her husband.</p><p>"I listen to him, he listens to me. It's a marriage," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU0spyR9gvc">she said on CBS</a>.</p><p>She has been <a href="https://www.insider.com/joe-biden-jill-biden-relationship-timeline-2020-8">married to Joe Biden</a> since 1977 and she fiercely defends her family. For all of Joe Biden's official, gun-toting security, Jill Biden became known as her husband's bouncer during the 2020 campaign after twice <a href="https://twitter.com/DrBiden/status/1227059560483098630">helping </a>to <a href="https://twitter.com/girlsreallyrule/status/1235047544347955200">eject protesters</a> from rallies. </p><p>When her husband held a nearly two-hour news conference in January, she was the one asking his aides why no one tried to stop it, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/16/us/politics/jill-biden-democrats-midterms.html">the New York Times reported</a>. </p><p>Asked on CBS about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-biden-age-poll-term-limits-medical-checks-poll-2022-9">polls that show</a> Americans have concerns about Joe Biden's mental fitness, she shook her head in exasperation.</p><p>"I think that's ridiculous," she said.</p><p>She also dismissed questions from NBC about their son, Hunter, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hunter-biden-possible-charges-how-white-house-president-bracing-2022-10">who is under federal investigation</a> for possible tax crimes and a false statement on a gun application and who has long been a target of Republican congressional scrutiny.</p><p>"Everybody and their brother has investigated Hunter," <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/decider-jill-bidens-unparalleled-influence-impact-president-rcna51290">she told NBC</a>. "They keep at it, and at it, and at it. I know that Hunter is innocent. I love my son, and I will keep looking forward."</p><h2><strong>'First lady of the moment'</strong></h2><p>Jill Biden is a professor who grades tough, a "Philly girl" who is stoked <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34866478/2022-world-series-astros-phillies-need-do-win">about the World Series</a>, and a fitness buff who squeezes barre and cycle classes into her travel schedule. She is also a known prankster, who once stuffed herself inside an overhead bin on Air Force Two to give someone a scare and who posed last year as a flight attendant named "Jasmine" to trick reporters on April Fool's Day.</p><p>What she isn't, is a born politico. She's a self-described introvert married to an extrovert and she says in her memoir that she was "never a natural as a 'political spouse.'" She forced herself through discomfort before feeling she was "getting the hang of this political wife thing."</p><p>Becoming first lady was also a challenge.</p><p>"I had to be, with all that was happening, First Lady of the moment," she said at a July fundraiser.</p><p>But her stamp on the <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/12/jill-biden-first-lady-professor-436363">role is groundbreaking</a> as the first president's wife to continue her professional career as first lady. She loves being known two days out of the week as simply "Dr. B," the students' English professor, she often says. "Of course you should" continue teaching, her husband told her after the 2008 election, she wrote.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Jill Biden" height="3576" width="4768" msid="95127411" hostid="261" sizebytes="845570"></div></h2><p>Jill Biden came into her role as first lady with a focus on issues she worked on during her eight years as second lady — education, helping military families, and fighting cancer after their son Beau died at age 46. </p><p>She's a natural envoy to the teachers unions who supported her husband's 2020 campaign, particularly given that Jill Biden herself is a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jill-biden-union-member-teacher-why-it-matters-first-lady-2021-4">member of the largest one</a>. Teaching gives her a "link to the real world" outside the bubble of the White House, said Michael LaRosa, her former press secretary. Events are scheduled around her teaching two days a week and she grades papers on the plane.</p><p>On World Teachers' Day this month, Jill Biden spoke on The Kelly Clarkson Show about visiting Uvalde, Texas, where 19 elementary schoolers and two teachers were killed in a school shooting.</p><p>"Having lost a child, myself … it was just devastating," she said. "We've got to do more. We must ban assault weapons."</p><p>She also told teachers in the audience: "I said to my students, you have to have a plan in your head if there's an active shooter on campus."</p><h2><strong>'Dig a little deeper'</strong></h2><p>Jill Biden has built up her political voice over the years – all in her unmistakable accent from the Philadelphia suburbs.</p><p>"You know you're hearing real America when you hear her pronounce the word 'coffee,'" LaRosa said. </p><p>She has been working to mobilize women at recent events with a midterm elections message focusing on her husband's accomplishments and her personal experience growing up in an era before Roe v. Wade, the landmark case guaranteeing abortion rights that the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Supreme Court struck down</a> in June. </p><p>Jill Biden tells the audience of friend who could only get an abortion in the pre-Roe days by being declared mentally unfit. </p><p>"We will not let some radical Republican agenda be the legacy we leave for our daughters and granddaughters," she said at an event in San Francisco.</p><p>At fundraising events, she has asked donors to "dig a little deeper, give a little bit more." </p><p>She has participated in 10 fundraising events for the Democratic National Committee and her events, emails, texts, and direct mail have brought in millions for Democrats up and down the ticket, according to a DNC spokesperson.</p><p>In the past month, she's appeared at campaign events with Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Florida US Senate candidate Val Demings and Florida gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist. She went to Rhode Island on Wednesday and is headed on Saturday to New Hampshire for political events with Sen. Maggie Hassan and the state Democratic Party.</p><p>"Jill Biden is a really big draw," said a Murray campaign spokesperson. The campaign raised "well over six figures" at their event with her. </p><p>She talks to people across the country and exchanges information with her husband, Kaufman said. "That's the way the partnership works," he said. She has been <a href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/morning-education/2020/05/13/education-would-see-100b-boost-in-democrats-latest-rescue-package-787568">trying to learn Spanish</a> in recent years as a way to connect with Spanish-speaking students at her community college and she's taking classes online.</p><p>Her favorability rating, in limited polling on her, was only slightly positive — 34% favorable, 29% unfavorable and 37% unsure, according to a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/18/politics/jill-biden-rating/index.html">CNN poll conducted by SSRS</a> between June and July.</p><p>Former first lady Michelle Obama — Gallup's <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/328193/donald-trump-michelle-obama-admired-2020.aspx">reigning</a> "Most Admired Woman" — continues to overshadow Jill Biden in many respects, including periodic mentions in <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/on-balance-with-leland-vittert/vittert-obama-2024-could-still-happen-and-heres-why/">punditry</a> and <a href="https://mclaughlinonline.com/pols/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/National-Presentation-RELEASE-10-18-22.pdf">polls</a> alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as a potential 2024 Democratic presidential nominee if Joe Biden decides to forego re-election.</p><p>Democratic pollster Celinda Lake suggested that Jill Biden's rating was reflective of her husband's popularity and not specific to her. People sometimes bring up Jill Biden and say positive things about her during focus group discussions on Democrats, Lake said. They like that she continues teaching, that she's in touch with real people and that she can speak to her husband's character.</p><p>"We're not short of negative arguments," Lake said. "What we need to do is be able to bring to women voters, in particular, who are swamped with their lives, a sense that 'we are getting things done for you, we get your life' and she's really good on that."</p><p>At 71, Jill Biden is more than eight years younger than her husband and projects a "vital image" that is "useful to the Biden brand," especially if the criticism of her husband is that his public speaking style seems "slow and old-mannish," said Ohio University professor Katherine Jellison, who studies first ladies. </p><p>With midterm early voting already underway in many states, Joe Biden needs whatever help he can get. A sitting president's party typically performs badly during midterm elections. While Democrats today control both the House and Senate, Republicans are <a href="https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/2022-house/">favored to win the House</a>, and they have a shot at controlling the Senate. More Republicans in Congress will only further hamper Biden's agenda during the last two years of his term, giving him less to run on in 2024.</p><p>A Republican-controlled House, specifically, would also almost certainly <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/09/16/afghanistan-hunter-biden-gop-readies-its-investigations/">launch</a> <a href="https://time.com/6218879/hunter-biden-investigations-james-comer-house-republicans/">investigations</a> into Hunter Biden and various aspects of the Biden administration. Some House Republicans are also <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/10/republicans-investigate-possible-impeachment-joe-biden/671859/">itching to impeach</a> Joe Biden, and regardless of the reasons offered, there'd be little stopping them except themselves.  </p><p>Jill Biden has stressed the high stakes of this election. Getting out on the campaign trail now will also allow her to test strategies or topics that she can use for a potential 2024 campaign.</p><p> "This is a key moment for her," Jellison said.</p><div type="image" title="Joe Biden and Jill Biden wear matching blue outfits" height="2248" width="2997" msid="95127415" hostid="261" sizebytes="389688"></div><h2><strong>'It may be his name on the ticket, but …'</strong></h2><p>When Jill Biden wanted her husband to run for president in 2008, she organized a family meeting, stood up to drive home her point, and said, "it's time. You have to run," she wrote. </p><p>In 2020, Joe Biden told his friend Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware that his wife wanted him to run even more than he did, Carper recalled in an interview with Insider. She later, during a fundraiser, described that election against Donald Trump as "a choice between good and evil."</p><p>Biden isn't expected to make a firm decision on running in 2024 until after the midterm elections, and likely, early next year. </p><p>The first lady wrote in her memoir that her husband "always understood that a public life was his choice, not mine," so the family decides together on his campaigns.</p><p>"It may be his name on the ticket, but all of us — me, the kids, and now the grandkids—have to talk to reporters, show up at rallies, and deal with the scrutiny," she wrote.</p><p>LaRosa said the first lady is traveling the country and the world now to support her husband because she believes in what he's doing.</p><p>But does she truly want him to run again? Will she use her power of "NO" if she believes the notion of occupying the White House until 2029 — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-president-age-80-election-campaign-2022-9">nearly 60 years</a> after Joe Biden first entered elected politics — is just too much?</p><p>"She will always be supportive of what he wants, and you start from there," LaRosa said.</p>

Shuhui's parents couldn't afford to send her to a boarding school, so she worked one-on-one with her teacher, day in and day out - although sometimes, her teacher invited younger preschoolers to play with her, so she wouldn't be lonely.&#xa0;It's unclear if, two years after Reuters visited her school, she still attends alone.</p><p>China has a population of nearly 1.4 billion people, the most of any country in the world. However, the population is unevenly distributed between urban centers and rural areas. There's a school in rural China with only one student, who learns and plays alone

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/54017254.cms" /><br /> Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) has partnered with the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology &amp; Research Academy (<keyword id="413075" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sastra-University">SASTRA University</keyword>, Tamil Nadu) to train university teachers about digital-based teaching methods.<br />
<br />
The program would train more than 2,000 school teachers from various educational institutes across tier 2 and tier 3 cities in Tamil Nadu.<br />

"Technology is rapidly transforming the education sector with digital technologies increasingly becoming an integral part of the students' daily lifestyle. By announcing this initiative for teachers in Tamil Nadu on the special occasion of Teacher's Day, TCS believes that empowering the teachers through this program on digital learning pedagogies will help enhance the quality of education provided across Tamil Nadu," said TCS executive VP Ajoyendra Mukherjee.<br />
<br />
Along with space for digital teaching methods, the training centre would also house a language lab, digital assessment solutions, lecture capture solutions, studio to develop learning material, facilities to develop simple applications for a teaching-learning ecosystem and other support facilities for the training programmes, says an official release.<br />

Each programme would train 45 teachers over a period of six days.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/560021ed9dd7cc23008bbd4e-3000-1500/gettyimages-489397722.jpg" alt="Tracy Morgan Emmys" data-mce-source="Getty Images" /><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Tracy Morgan.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Following the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tracy-morgan-emmy-speech-2015-9">touching return</a> of Tracy Morgan at the Emmys Sunday night, there's news that the funnyman is one step closer to returning to the big screen. </p><p>According to <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/tracy-morgan-to-join-ice-cube-charlie-day-in-new-line-comedy-fist-fight-exclusive/">The Wrap</a>, Morgan is in negotiations to join Ice Cube and Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") in the comedy "Fist Fight."</p><p>This would be the first movie Morgan would be involved in since he was seriously injured in 2014 when a Walmart truck hit the limo Morgan and others were riding in on the New Jersey Turnpike.</p><p>The comedy follows a teacher (Day) who is challenged to a fist fight by a tougher colleague (Cube). </p><p>Morgan's role has not been disclosed, according to The Wrap, but the news shows that the comic is on the road to recovery.</p><p>At Sunday's Emmys, Morgan took the stage <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tracy-morgan-emmy-speech-2015-9">towards the end of the evening</a> and thanked everyone for their well-wishes. Now that at least <a href="https://www.edweek.org/ew/section/multimedia/map-coronavirus-and-school-closures.html">55 million US students</a> are learning from home due to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news">coronavirus pandemic,</a> many parents say they're more grateful for educators than ever before. </p><p>Many parents are also eager to demonstrate that gratitude by gifting something special. To find out what educators would be excited to receive, Insider reached out to a group of teachers on Facebook, and more than 500 educators responded. </p><p>Some favorites include personal notes, drawings, and gift cards. While many teachers said they would be grateful for any sort of recognition, some noted that they don't get quite as excited about such common gifts as mugs, candles, or monogrammed water bottles and tote bags.</p><p>Insider compiled the top 20 gifts teachers said they appreciate most. </p><h2>A personalized note or email</h2><p><div type="image" title="child writing" height="3415" width="4553" msid="75632731" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The most popular gift by far was a personalized note or email – either from a student or a parent. Teachers said they particularly like cards that specify what the person enjoyed about the class or the teaching style.</p><p>"After a rough day or at the end of the year when I'm asking myself 'Did I make a difference?' I pull those notes out and read them," Gregg Williams, a social studies teacher in Arlington Texas said, "and that is the elixir to keep me going."</p><h2>A handmade craft</h2><p><div type="image" title="teacher gifts" height="3456" width="4608" msid="75632737" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The second most requested present was something homemade. A number of teachers said that getting drawings, paintings, and handcrafted cards put a smile on their faces. </p><p>"I've been teaching for 10 plus years now, and I still hang up sweet pictures and cards students made for me," Nina Moser, an enrichment teacher in Urbandale, Iowa, said. </p><h2>Caffeine</h2><p><div type="image" title="coffee" height="3750" width="5000" msid="75632742" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The average school day is about seven hours long. But the average teacher clocks in 12 to 16 hours daily, according to<a href="https://edtechmagazine.com/k12/article/2013/08/how-many-hours-do-educators-actually-work"> EdTech Magazine. </a>Many teachers said that they rely on caffeine for a boost of energy, especially during this stressful period, and that a nice bag of coffee beans, or even a case of their favorite soda, goes a long way. </p><h2>Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, tissues, and disinfectant wipes</h2><p>Now that there's a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-buy-toilet-paper-essentials-sold-out-amazon-walmart-2020-4">shortage of basic household items</a>, many teachers said they'd actually love to get some toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, both for themselves and for their classrooms once school resumes.</p><h2>A virtual check-in </h2><p><div type="image" title="elementary school zoom" height="1411" width="1881" msid="75632762" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Many teachers said that what they miss most is their face-to-face interactions with their students. Scheduling a Zoom meeting or a Google Hangout session to check in and say "thank you" will go a long way. </p><h2>A hot meal</h2><p>Many teachers have said that educating their students during the pandemic is particularly stressful since they're adapting to an entirely new platform, while also managing their personal lives. That's why so many say getting a hot meal from a restaurant, especially now, is a true luxury.</p><p>"One of the best gifts I have gotten was lunch brought in by a parent," Amy Valentine Barlow, a middle school science teacher in Miami, Florida, said. "Simple, but thoughtful."</p><h2>A video of your child graduating or performing from home</h2><p>Teachers are just as disappointed as students that major events have been canceled this year. Virtually including teachers in at-home celebrations and performances can help them feel more connected to their students.</p><h2>Gift Cards </h2><p><div type="image" title="gift cards" height="2533" width="3377" msid="75632765" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A 2018 study found that public school teachers <a href="https://nypost.com/2018/05/15/study-reveals-how-much-teachers-spend-each-year-on-school-supplies/">spend an average of $480 of their own money</a> a year on supplies for the classroom. Many teachers said that they'd appreciate gift cards from Amazon, Target, and Teachers Pay Teachers,  to help with stocking up their classrooms so they'll be prepared when school resumes. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">Dry erase markers, paper clips, and classroom supplies </strong></h2><p>If you prefer to give a tangible gift, consider buying classroom supplies, such as paper clips, pencils, dry erase markers, and pens. Find out if the teacher has an online wish list or ask if they have any specific needs.</p><h2>Plants </h2><p><div type="image" title="Potted Plant" height="3333" width="4444" msid="75632772" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A little bit of greenery can brighten a teacher's day. </p><p>"I love getting plants because I can keep them in my room during the year," Amy Rorvick Oseguera, a St. Paul, Minnesota teacher, said. "I share stories of the kids who gifted them to me and during the summer they stay at my house, reminding me of all the joy my job brings to me."</p><h2>A personalized thank you sign</h2><p>Some teachers said they'd like a colorful gesture of gratitude. "A sign in my front yard from students saying 'a cool teacher lives here' and notes all over would be so cool," Kristen Case, a West Park, Ohio teacher, said. </p><p>Parents can send a photo of their child holding a sign expressing their appreciation, too.</p><h2>Small treasures</h2><p><div type="image" title="Children playing outside" height="3559" width="4745" msid="75632777" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"The best [gifts] are just the random things [students] find that they give you," Lisa Hoffpauir Waldrop, a Houston, Texas teacher, said. One of her favorite gifts was a small plastic apple from a student last year. </p><h2><strong>Something special that reminds a teacher of a student</strong></h2><p>When Megan Ostrander Sneary assigned her class to write about their heritage, a Native American student submitted her report and gave the Arizona teacher a special picture. The student drew the totems of her clan. "She was honored to share the heritage of her clan and tribe with me," said Ostrander Sneary.</p><h2>An item from the school store</h2><p>Many teachers would still like to represent their school while at home. Stephanie Brennan said that she appreciated when the principal of her school let teachers choose an item from the school store as a gift, including face masks branded with the school logo.</p><h2>Alcohol (but inquire first)</h2><p><div type="image" title="Wine aisle" height="2700" width="3600" msid="75632783" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Before giving alcohol to teachers, make sure that that's something they enjoy. If they're a wine drinker or other type of alcohol connoisseur, consider dropping off a nice bottle with a thoughtful thank you note.</p><h2>Show up</h2><p>More than anything, teachers want to communicate with their students, especially while they're learning remotely, Dorothy Chartres Noble, a teacher in Catonsville, Maryland said.</p><p>"Attendance," Noble said of what she wants most. "Just hearing how students are doing and interacting with them is enough this year."</p><h2>A spa treatment </h2><p>Everyone is looking forward to the moment when they can get pampered, once businesses start reopening. That's why a gift certificate to a spa is a great gift right now. </p><p>"I love when I get gift cards because I am very frugal with my small teacher salary," Jessica Davidson said. "With a gift card, I feel like I can treat myself without worrying that I can't afford it."</p><h2>Experiential gifts </h2><p><div type="image" title="Zoom class" height="2839" width="3785" msid="75632790" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Enabling a teacher to take a real break, by treating them to a remote yoga or dance class, is something many teachers say they would enjoy.</p><h2>Donations toward a dream project</h2><p>Teachers often come up with major projects for schools that require major funding. </p><p>That was the case for Rosanna Christine, a Rhode Island music teacher, who was trying to collect enough money to buy a new piano for her chorus classroom. A few parents made donations and that meant a lot to her. </p><p>"That was the best gift I could ask for," Christine said. </p><h2>Year-round advocacy</h2><p>Teachers say they appreciate the <a href="https://www.insider.com/im-grateful-for-all-teacher-appreciation-but-want-see-more-2020-5">recognition they're now getting,</a> and are grateful for gifts. But several said that what they'd really like to see is advocacy and support for their profession all year long, not just during a crisis. </p><p>"The best thing they can do is vote," Candace McCann-Belbey, a teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, said.
