Addressing the post-budget session of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Malhotra said there were apprehensions as to whether people would shift to the simplified tax regime. "About 6 crore filed for last year and 70 per cent is under the new income tax regime. The whole move has been towards simplicity with the ultimate purpose being to reduce the <keyword id="20380188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="compliance-burden" source="keywords">compliance burden</keyword>," Malhotra said. For the 2022-23 fiscal, 8.61 crore ITRs were filed. "We will come up with a draft and then we will seek suggestions," Malhotra said. You get to pay taxes at low rates, yes, but you also don't get to claim a whole lot other deductions. The taxpayers and tax professionals made their compliances in time, leading to a surge in the filing of Income-tax Returns (<keyword id="20458564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITRs" source="keywords">ITRs</keyword>), which resulted in a new record of ITRs filed till <keyword id="22468495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31" source="keywords">July 31</keyword>, 2024. July 31 was the last due date for filing the <keyword id="19948101" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="income-tax-returns" source="keywords">income tax returns</keyword>, without having to pay any penalties. The total number of ITRs for assessment year 2024-25 filed till July 31, 2024 is more than 7.28 crore, which is 7.5% more than the total ITRs for assessment 2023-24 (6.77 crore) filed, a <keyword id="19908390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Finance" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Finance" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Finance">Ministry of Finance</keyword> release stated on Friday. An increasing number of taxpayers have opted for the <keyword id="19935168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Tax-Regime" source="keywords">new tax regime</keyword> this year, the <keyword id="19900485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="keywords">finance ministry</keyword> said. Out of the total ITRs of 7.28 crore that have been filed, 5.27 crore have been filed in the new tax regime, as compared to 2.01 crore filed in the old tax regime. Thus, about 72% of taxpayers have opted for the new tax regime, while the rest 28% continue to be in the old tax regime. The filing of ITRs peaked on July 31, 2024 (due date for salaried taxpayers and other non-tax audit cases) with over 69.92 lakh ITRs being filed on a single day. The <keyword id="20404575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-filing-portal" source="keywords">e-filing portal</keyword> also observed its highest per hour rate of 5.07 lakh of ITR filing between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on July 31. A total of 58.57 lakh ITRs from first time filers were reported, a fair indication of widening of tax base. "A lot of emphasis was provided to educate taxpayers about old and new tax regimes. FAQs and educational videos on the same were designed and uploaded on the e-filing portal," the ministry said. Focused outreach campaigns were carried out on social media to encourage the taxpayers to file their ITRs early. Along with this, unique creative campaigns were also carried out on different platforms. Informational videos in 12 vernacular languages, apart from English and Hindi, were displayed on digital platforms. The ministry said it is encouraging to note that over 6.21 crore ITRs have been e-verified, out of which more than 5.81 crore are through Aadhaar-based OTP (93.56% ). Of the e-verified ITRs, more than 2.69 crore ITRs for the 2024-2025 have been processed (43.34%) till July 31, 2024. Note that e-verification is the final step in filing your ITR. If you do not e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing it, your ITR will stand invalid. The e-filing Helpdesk team has handled approximately 10.64 lakh queries from taxpayers during the year up to July 31, supporting the taxpayers proactively during the peak filing period. Taxpayers are also requested to verify their unverified ITRs if any, within 30 days of filing the ITR. Taxpayers are urged, who for any reason, missed filing their ITR within the due date, to complete their filing expeditiously.

According to the <keyword id="19908389" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Union-Budget" source="keywords">Union Budget</keyword> 2024-25 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the total expenditure in Budget Estimates (BE) 2024-25 is estimated at Rs 48,20,512 crore of which total <keyword id="20018917" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-expenditure" source="keywords">capital expenditure</keyword> is Rs 11,11,111 crore. The total expenditure in the Interim Budget presented in February was estimated at Rs 47,65,768 crore of which total capital expenditure was Rs 11.11 lakh crore. Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA Limited, said the budget has kept the capital expenditure unchanged and pared the fiscal deficit to 4.9 per cent of GDP. "The anticipated reiteration of the reduction in the fiscal deficit to below 4.5 per cent of GDP in FY2026 is welcome. Interestingly, the new medium term fiscal consolidation path has been linked to a reduction in the debt/GDP ratio instead of continued compression of the fiscal deficit/GDP ratio," she said. Buoyed by improvement in revenue collection, the government has lowered fiscal deficit target to 4.9 per cent for the current <keyword id="19910979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-year" source="keywords">financial year</keyword> as against 5.1 per cent estimated in February's interim budget. Ranen Banerjee, Partner and Leader Economic Advisory, PwC India, said that fiscal prudence is the highlight of the full Union Budget 2024-25. The government has gone with realistic projections on its revenue and expenditure estimates and refrained from announcing overly populist measures. "The majority of the allocations, including the capex allocation, are as outlined in the interim budget, thus providing continuity. The capex being kept at INR 11.11 trillion was expected, given that the ability to consume this allocation is limited due to disruption from the elections in the first quarter and the second quarter being typically slowed down by the monsoons," Banerjee said. Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) President Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal said the government has announced five schemes to facilitate employment and skilling for 4.1 crore youth over the next five years with a central outlay of Rs 2 lakh crore. "This is a welcome step that will create a skilled workforce to address the existing deficit and generate <keyword id="19972727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment-opportunities" source="keywords">employment opportunities</keyword>. Additionally, financial support for loans up to Rs 10 lakh for higher education will help students pursue higher education and acquire skills," he added. Indian Institute of Insolvency Professionals of ICAI (IIIPI) Chairman Ashok Haldia said the budget proposals for an integrated technology platform and sprucing up NCLT infrastructure will provide a fillip to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) regime. IIIPI is promoted by ICAI. Meanwhile, Kumarmangalam Vijay, Partner, JSA Advocates and Solicitors, opined that in its new avatar, it seems that the Modi government is keen to deliver on its promise of 'ease of doing business'. "Its focus on making it simpler is evident from the abolition of the angel tax, the increase in new income tax regime thresholds, new Vivad se Vishwas Scheme 2024 for the resolution of pending cases and the increase in the threshold for appeal by tax departments at various levels, decriminalising the non-reporting of shares received from non-resident employers and reducing the period for re-opening of the cases," Vijay said. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) said there has been a focus on the manufacturing sector in the budget. Measures have been taken for simplifying the FDI/ODI rules and regulations, and the <keyword id="21847964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-regimes" source="keywords">tax regimes</keyword>. The enhanced Mudra loan limit and the abolition of angel tax are all set to incentivize the startup and MSME ecosystem of the country. "The nine priorities identified in this progressive and inclusive budget 2024 are aimed at generating ample opportunities for all. Besides agricultural reforms, the budget focuses on skilling, educating and employing the youth, a priority that the ICSI has been concentrating on," said ICSI President B Narasimhan. Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, said the government's continued emphasis on infrastructure development is commendable. Enhanced road infrastructure will bolster the travel and tourism sector. "We also welcome the initiatives to develop iconic spiritual and cultural sites into world-class tourist hotspots," Magow said. The <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax department</keyword> on Wednesday said 'substantial <keyword id="20138064" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-savings" source="keywords">tax savings</keyword>' are expected for a vast majority of taxpayers due to reduction in the <keyword id="22526761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">long term capital gains</keyword> <keyword id="45031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax" source="Orion">tax</keyword> (LTCG) rate in the <keyword id="19895040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate" source="keywords">real estate</keyword> sector. The Budget has reduced tax rates on capital gains earned from sale of house properties held for long term, but has removed the <keyword id="22142879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indexation-benefit" source="keywords">indexation benefit</keyword> available to taxpayers. The LTCG has been reduced from 20 per cent with indexation benefit to 12.5 per cent without indexation for the real estate sector. The indexation benefit allowed taxpayers to compute gains arising out of sale of <keyword id="801267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-assets" source="Orion">capital assets</keyword> after adjusting inflation. In a post on X, the income tax department said the nominal real estate returns are generally in the region of 12-16 per cent per annum, much higher than inflation. "The indexation for inflation is in the region of 4-5 per cent, depending on the period of holding. Therefore, substantial tax savings are expected to a vast majority of such taxpayers," it said. Giving a comparison of benefits based on the holding period of the real estate property, the I-T department said the new <keyword id="22422932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-rate" source="keywords">tax rate</keyword> without indexation is beneficial in most cases. For property held for five years, the new regime is beneficial when property has appreciated 1.7 times or more, while for a property held for 10 years, it is beneficial when the value has increased 2.4 times or more. For a property purchased in 2009-10, if value has increased to 4.9 times or more, it is beneficial, it said. "From the above examples, it is clear that only where returns are low (less than about 9-11 per cent per annum) that the earlier tax rate is beneficial, but such low returns in real estate are unrealistic and rare," the I-T department said. As per the changes brought in the 2024-25 Budget, the government has retained the indexation benefit for taxpayers on properties bought or inherited before 2001. The changes in the tax rate have been made effective from July 23, 2024.

That is why you should not delay filing your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/article/heres-your-ready-reckoner-for-itr-filing/articleshow/111402608.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">income tax returns</a> anymore! The <keyword id="20171597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-department" source="keywords">IT department</keyword> noted that as of July 26th, 2024, over 5 crore ITRs had already been filed, marking an 8.5% increase from the number of ITRs filed during this period, last year. The IT department, in an X post, highlighted that last year, it had reached the 5-crore <keyword id="22083160" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing-deadline" source="keywords">ITR filing deadline</keyword> on July 27th. However, this year, it had breached the milestone a day earlier, i.e., on July 26th, 2024. Earlier, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Income Tax Bar Association had requested a deadline extension for AY 2024–25 from July 31st, 2024, to August 31st, 2024, citing issues and glitches in the tax filing portal. However, there has been no response from the finance ministry on the same. <h2>What happens if I don't file my ITR until July 31st? </h2>For AY 2024–25, you can file a <keyword id="6380232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="belated-ITR" source="Orion">belated ITR</keyword> until December 31st, 2024. But remember, it comes with many disadvantages as well. Here's a snapshot of all the benefits you will have to forego: <h2>What are the penalties for late filing of ITR? </h2>1. You will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 if your total annual taxable income is below Rs 5,00,000. But if your taxable income exceeds this threshold, you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. 2. Even if you have to file a <keyword id="17933087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIL-ITR" source="Orion">nil ITR</keyword>, you must do so before July 31st. This is because if you do not end up filing it on time, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. 3. According to Section 234A of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, you will also have to pay interest on your outstanding tax amount at the rate of 1% per month, starting from the due date, i.e., July 31st. <h2>No carry forward of losses, old tax regime</h2>1. You will not be able to carry forward any losses, including those from your mutual funds or stock investments, business income, and other sources. You will only be allowed to carry forward your losses from house properties. This could significantly raise your total tax liability and lead to you incurring hefty losses. 2. After July 31st, 2024, you will not be able to opt for the old tax regime for tax calculation purposes. Starting August 1, the new tax regime, which offers significantly fewer deductions and exemptions as compared to the old regime, will be considered default for you.
