NEW DELHI: India could introduce a Vocational Training Act on the lines of the one in China, with the ministry of labour and employment working on the contours of the first of its kind initiative in the country to provide legal framework for the Narendra Modi-led NDA government’s Skill India programme that aims to provide quality training to millions of youths over the next seven years to make them employable. 
 As a large number of youths enter the workforce every year, India needs to improve quality of training so it matches international standards, a <keyword id="209888" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-ministry-official">senior ministry official</keyword> said. 
 
“We are currently studying the law on vocational education in China and plan to come up with our own legislation that will provide a framework for imparting vocational training in the country,” said the official, who did not wish to be named. 
 Countries such as <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> and China have dedicated laws for vocational training and the ministry is studying these to understand how a similar legislation best suited to India can be introduced in the country. “There is an incremental requirement of 347 million skilled manpower in 21 high growth sectors, including manufacturing sector, by the year 2022,” the ministry recently said in a reply to a Parliament question citing a study by the National Skill Development Corporation.

 In his <keyword id="117156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Budget-speech">budget speech</keyword>, <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> had announced a new national programme called Skill India to impart employability and entrepreneurship skills to the youth by merging various schemes from across ministries. India has the world’s youngest workforce with over 12 million new entrants in the <keyword id="6357125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="labour-market">labour market</keyword> every year but it is short on skills as only 2.5per cent of the employees have any certified ability. 
 
As a result, the country’s demographic dividend has not materialised. The industry is unable to find employable workers, a situation that experts say could lead to socio-economic unrest if the youth remain unemployed and have no avenue for training. 
 
The target is to skill 500 million people by 2022 and the government is largely betting on private players for skill development programmes. 
 Recently, the ministry of labour and employment has signed flexi MOUs (memorandums of understanding) with <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, Flipkart, Raymonds and the <keyword id="2470780" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Industrial-Power-Company-Ltd">Gujarat Industrial Power Company Ltd</keyword> (GIPCL) that will give companies the flexibility to design training programmes at Industrial Training Institutes in a manner that the youth are skilled according to the specific needs of the industry.

 Tata has earlier invested in Snapdeal, Urban Ladder, Bluestone and Car Dekho. With the ad dition of Paytm, his portfolio is almost half a dozen strong. Add to that his advisory role at venture fund <keyword id="1397792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kalaari-Capital">Kalaari Capital</keyword>, and he could be branded as a mini venture capitalist.

The company said it would develop new features, capabilities and interfaces for Verifone’s Cloud Services offerings, enabling seamless and flexible transaction processing for the company. The shares of Wipro ended 1.8% higher on Wednesday. Dabur The company has responded to a study by the Delhi-based NGO Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and said that its honey had passed the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) test in Germany and it is complying with 22 parameters mandated by FSSAI for testing honey. The CSE study shows that 10 of the 13 brands of honey sold in India, including Dabur had failed the NMR test. The shares of Dabur ended 0.61% lower on Wednesday. DHFL The Committee of Creditors for cash-strapped DHFL has voted in favour of inviting revised bids. And, December 14 has been set as the new deadline to submit bids. The shares of DHFL ended 5% higher on Wednesday. Raymond Raymond’s subsidiary Silver Spark Apparel has entered into a share transfer agreement to divest its entire stake in its subsidiary Dress Master Apparel for ₹19.07 crore. The shares of Raymond ended 0.36% lower on Wednesday. Tata Chemicals Tata Sons bought shares worth ₹76 crore in Tata Chemicals. The shares of Tata Chemicals ended 6% higher on Wednesday. SpiceJet SpiceJet intends to expand its cargo business considerably over the next two years, after great success during the pandemic, the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Ajay Singh said in their annual report. MUMBAI: <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> is said to be considering a personal investment in <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, an e-commerce firm, at a time when online retail is generating investor euphoria on the back of exponential growth. 
 
In a move that would signal his interest in India's emerging consumer internet story, the 76-year-old chairman emeritus of Tata Sons may buy out an early investor in Snapdeal through a secondary sale, people familiar with the development said. 
 
Kunal Bahl, co-founder of Snapdeal, did not respond to TOI's query while an emailed questionnaire to Tata's office on Monday remained unanswered till the time of going to press on Tuesday. 
 
The 76-year-old, who transformed India's largest private sector conglomerate with a string of marquee global acquisitions, is expected to be a minority investor in his personal capacity in the e-tailer. TOI could not ascertain the exact stake Tata would hold in Snapdeal if and when the transaction is completed. 
 
While his holding is unlikely to be high, its real significance would lie in the buzz it would create for the four-year-old firm. Tata has always had in interest in technology; even so, the deal, if it goes through, would mark the ultimate coming together of the old and new guard. 
 
People close to Snapdeal said Tata had visited the firm's headquarters in Delhi about a month ago and addressed employees. 
 Tata could be boarding Snapdeal just when the online marketplace, which has crossed $1 billion in gross merchandise sale by value—second only to Flipkart—is busy fending off a challenge from online retail juggernaut <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> for No. 2 position in the domestic e-commerce market. 
 
The investment would be testimony to the growing interest of established business houses in India's burgeoning internet commerce, which is poised to hit $9 billion over the next two years, according to US venture capitalist Accel Partners. 
 The potential investment by Tata, who stepped down from his day-to-day responsibilities at the $100 billion conglomerate about two years ago, would be a huge, timely shot in the arm for Snapdeal, with both <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and Amazon declaring open war for dominance of India's fast-growing e-commerce market which has attracted top dollars from financial investors. 
 
Bangalore-based Flipkart, the country's leading e-tailer with gross sales nearing $3 billion, last week raised $1 billion in funding mostly from existing investors led by Tiger Global, Naspers and Accel Partners. The Jeff Bezos-led Amazon responded a day later by announcing a $2 billion investment in what is becoming a hotly contested three-legged race. 
 Another Indian business tycoon, Wipro's Azim Premj, has laid bets on the Indian consumer internet story through his family office PremjiInvest by picking up minority stakes in <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword>, now merged with Flipkart, and Snapdeal. <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> co-founder <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> recently formed an e-commerce joint venture with Amazon through his private investment firm Catamaran Ventures.

Snapdeal has already raised two rounds of funds so far this year, taking total capital raised to about $350 million at a valuation of a billion dollars. Its existing investors include San Jose- based eBay Inc, Singapore's Temasek, BlackRock, PremjiInvest, Intel, Nexus Venture Partners, NEA-IndoUS Venture Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners. 
 
Bahl and schoolmate, Rohit Bansal, both 32, started Snapdeal four years ago as a daily deals site, modelled on GroupOn, later changing it into an online marketplace for merchants to sell their products. Before Snapdeal, the Delhi duo founded Money Saver, a physical coupon book business that offered discounts to consumers across retail outlets. Bahl, who'd returned after graduating from Wharton, and Bansal, armed with an IIT-Delhi degree, later transitioned from a physical format to mobile couponing till the idea of starting a daily-deals site struck them in January 2010. 
 
Snapdeal says it sells about five million products across various categories like apparel, mobiles and electronics with over 25 million subscribers operating on a pure-play online marketplace model. Like Flipkart, it generates over 50% of its orders from mobile phones.

The Tata Consumer Company distributors who are now listed online with Flipkart Marketplace, have undergone the Flipkart training for packaging and order fulfilment and will process orders as per the standard operating procedures set by Flipkart. Flipkart's marketplace supply chain will fulfill the orders by picking up these essentials combinations from Tata Consumer Company distributors and delivering them to customers using its extensive network of delivery executives. "This partnership with Flipkart provides an innovative way to set up a strong alternate distribution channel through our wide network," added Sunil D'Souza, MD and CEO, Tata Consumer Products.

"Today's victory is not a personal victory for me, but is a victory for the principles of good governance and minority shareholder rights," he said a statement shared with the press. The Tata vs Mistry battle is far from over Within two months of his dismissal, Mistry’s family-run investment firms approached the NCLT. Mistry’s primary argument was that his removal as chairman of Tata Sons violated the Companies Act by forcing him to leave without ‘due process’ being followed and also accused the Board of ‘oppression and mismanagement’. While the lower court, the NCLT, had turned down Mistry’s appeal, today’s victory at the appellate tribunal gives Mistry a second chance to prove his charges against the Board and Ratan Tata. "The outcome of the appeal is a vindication of my stand taken when the board of Tata Sons, without warning or reason removed me, first as executive chairman, and subsequently as director of Tata Sons," he said. One of India’s biggest corporate disputes may be tested at the country’s highest court soon.

Tata Sons says the court gave Cyrus Mistry more than he wanted

BANGALORE: <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, chairman emeritus at Tata Sons, has invested in Delhi-based online marketplace <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. 
 
The company did not disclose the amount invested. The announcement comes a day after Snapdeal entered into a partnership with Tata Value Homes to sell apartment units of projects spread across five cities, namely, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. 
 
Snapdeal’s cofounder and chief executive Kunal Bahl termed Tata’s investment a validation of the company’s growth. “An investment by a legendary and respected figure like Mr. Tata is an excellent validation of our focused strategy on building a long term enterprise and marks the start of a very important phase for the company,” said Bahl. 
 
This investment also underlines the growing interest shown by India’s traditional industries in the fast-growing ecommerce sector. Recently traditional retail majors like Reliance and Arvind have made forays online. 
 The sector has also attracted large <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> in the past few months. Snapdeal raised over $233 million this year in two rounds from investors like eBay Inc, Singapore-based Temasek and Wipro chairman Azim Premji’s family office Premji Invest. Market leader Flipkart too raised two rounds of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> this year. In July it raised $1 billion from existing investors and <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword> sovereign wealth fund GIC. Global major Amazon also announced a $2 billion investment for its India operations in July. 
 
Snapdeal, which is estimated to have crossed $1 billion in sales this year, is rapidly adding new categories of products. Apart from apartments, it has launched a catering supplies segment recently. In the next few months the four-year-old platform is planning to add 10 more categories. Bahl has stated in the past that the company will focus on adding new merchants, new categories and focus on mobile commerce to ensure growth.

According to a survey by job search platform Indeed, half of the Indian businesses already trimmed the contractual workforce and freelancers to cut operational costs. Employment and employer services have changed ever since the crisis took over. In addition, a third of companies surveyed said that they will temporarily halt hiring activities — and only focus on critical hiring. While it is in the throes of trouble, the gig economy is also well prepared to ride the troubled time. As many as 83% of businesses are working on contingency plans. “It includes frequent communication protocols and technological infrastructure to ensure seamless remote working,” the survey said. And, two in five small and medium businesses are expected to go for remote hiring. “Resilience is being displayed by many employers who are exploring new ways to ensure their workforce is able to function seamlessly. Our data shows that remote working and work from home searches have been steadily increasing also, indicating jobseeker expectation mirrors these measures,” said Sashi Kumar, MD at Indeed India. Tatas, Bajaj and Flipkart assure salaries On the other hand, a few large corporates are <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/special-leave-to-ensure-isolation-doesnt-hit-pay/articleshow/74681435.cms">protecting employees with its ‘special leave’ policy</a> to ensure that they are paid during quarantine. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran also assured that the company will give away full payments to the daily wage workers for the two months — March and April. Flipkart too said that the isolation period will not impact their salaries. “I will cut my salary to zero before a single employee is laid off,” Rajiv Bajaj, managing director and chief executive officer of Bajaj Auto, <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/india-inc-rules-out-cut-in-jobs-and-salaries-amid-coronavirus-outbreak-120032001967_1.html">said</a>. Airlines however which are the worst hit sectors have already said that it will cut salaries of its employees. The cash-strapped national carrier Air India announced cost-cutting measures which included reducing certain allowances or suspending certain services that it pays to its executive pilots, cabin crew and ground staff. <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, Chairman Emeritus of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, has recently invested an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="2779670" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn">Tracxn</keyword>, the Bengaluru-based startup intelligence platform. 
 
With this development,Tracxn has joined the list of almost two dozen startups and tech companies that Tata has backed in the past two years, including Snapdeal, Ola Cabs, Paytm, Urbanladder, Xiaomi, UrbanClap and DogSpot. 
 
He is also involved with venture capital firms like Kalaari Capital, IDG Ventures India and Jungle Ventures in the capacity of an advisor. 
Talking of Tracxn, it has raised angel funding from Flipkart's co-founders Sachin and Binny Bansal, Delhivery's CEO Sahil Barua and $3.5 million in series-A funding from SAIF Partners. 
 
The company was founded in 2013 by former venture capital investors Neha Singh (ex-Sequoia Capital) and Abhishek Goyal (ex-Accel Partners), and tracks over 100 sectors including enterprise infrastructure, enterprise applications, technology, consumer, mobile, digital marketing, health, education. 
 <keyword id="2928014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn-Labs">Tracxn Labs</keyword>, an angel invest fund, and <keyword id="3401467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn-Syndicate">Tracxn Syndicate</keyword>, an angel investment group are also run by Tracxn, putting it in competition with Let's Venture, which is another fundraising platform that has been backed by Tata. 
 
In its clientele, Tracxn boasts of venture capital funds, private equity firms and corporate development teams who use the services provided by the company it to spot investment, merger and strategic partnership opportunities in different sectors. Some of these names include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, SoftBank, Google Capital, VMWare, GE and LG. 
 
In the past one year, Tracxn has increased its number of analysts assigned to exclusively tracking startups from 25 to 125. The client base has also seen a 400% increase to over 300 customers across 20 countries in the past 12 months. 
 
"Ratan Tata is a trusted household name &amp; his way of building things has played a critical role in how our thoughts shaped up in early days of our lives," Goyal told ET. "As we rapidly expand across geographies, his unconventional ways of building large companies with high diversity will be very useful," he continued.

Amazon and Flipkart individually had over twice the number of visits than that of Snapdeal, Club Factory, Shopclues, Tata Cliq and Paytm Mall combined, showed the data from the report.

 On an interesting note, Snapdeal scripted a comeback story as its numbers grew to current 87 million from 27 million visits in October 2017. “The growing volumes on Snapdeal are built on a sound and granular understanding of the importance of value in Bharat-focused e-commerce. Our ability to build scale along with favorable unit economics gives Snapdeal an immense competitive advantage,” said Kunal Bahl, CEO &amp; Co-founder, Snapdeal in a statement. Meanwhile, Amazon and Flipkart rode on the festive sale discounts that started in September. Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale too started towards the end of September.
