"I have Mr Tata's support to set up a new fund that will straddle the middle path between philanthropy and venture capital. The fund will sit outside the Tata Trusts' architecture but will invest in socially relevant and viable businesses incubated within the trust," Manoj Kumar, head of innovation at the Tata Trusts, told ET. 
 
Tata Trusts has its innovation centres in Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which would be used as the first layer in this structure. 
 
Socially relevant business ideas will get funds through grants that these institutions get, and the ones that will prove their worth would then get transferred to the Foundation for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (FISE), under Kumar's leadership. 
 
FISE will be the second layer of the structure. 
 
The third layer would then be a fund for enterprises with maximum potential for social change.

In last FY, the trusts collectively spent about Rs 800 crore in the form of grants, out of which more than two-third amount was spent on health, education, natural resource management and livelihood.

Tatas might start funding social enterprises

There are so many things that one can learn from <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, and the art of keeping employees motivated is one of them. On Friday, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/ratan-tata-is-not-stepping-down-from-tata-trusts-rubbishes-reports/articleshow/56018782.cms">chairman of Tata Trusts</a> called all employees of the Tata group "inheritors and custodians of the Trusts" and of its "belief in making a sustainable change" in society. 
 The <keyword id="123235" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Charitable-Trust">charitable trust</keyword> owns 66% of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, which is the holding entity of all companies controlled by the conglomerate that deals in a variety of interests, ranging from salt, cars, technology and steel.

It is because of you that we can derive and obtain the opportunity and the privilege to serve our community and through that, our nation," Tata wrote in a letter on the occasion of the 178th birth anniversary of Tata Trusts founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. It’s also the 125th year of the philanthropic organization. 
 
It was in 1892 that Tata Trusts was set up, in the form of the JN Tata Endowment, followed by Sir Ratan Tata trust in 1919, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 1932, the JRD Tata Trust in 1944, the Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust Jamsetji Tata Trust in 1974 and lastly, the Tata Education and Development Trust in 2008. 
 
The trust deals in healthcare, water, rural upliftment, energy, education, relief, rehabilitation and individual grants, and boasts of the creation of institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, all reputed names in their respective fields. 
 However, only recently it was in the news because of former Tata Sons chairman <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/war-intensifies-cyrus-mistry-is-going-to-challenge-chandrasekarans-appointment-as-tata-sons-chairman/articleshow/56642005.cms">questioning its governance structure</a> and ambit of power. It was October 24, 2016 that Mystry was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/cyrus-mistry-removed-as-tata-sons-director/articleshow/57003221.cms">ousted from his post</a>, which led to the feud.

Chandrasekaran also wrote a letter of encouragement to his employees, saying that higher shareholder value and business performance can be achieved if the conglomerate focuses relentlessly on customers and use innovation to reinvent its businesses.

Ratan Tata calls Tata employees inheritors and custodians of Tata Trusts

Management Development Institute, Gurgaon saw a 10% rise in average stipend at ₹231,000 for two-months. “Summers are important opportunities to spot future talent, so companies don’t risk missing out even if the overall sentiment is sluggish,” Kanwal Kapil, dean of placements at MDI Gurgaon <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/ecommerce-is-coolest-place-for-summer-internship/articleshow/71485727.cms?from=mdr">told </a>ET. According to the ET report, the average stipend for two-month summer internship increased from ₹204,000 to ₹208,000 at TISS, Mumbai while it decreased to ₹168,000 compared to 171,000 last year at IIM, Kozikhode. Highest paymasters FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and e-commerce companies are the top paying sectors for internships. While L’Oreal was the highest paying employer at ₹ 320,000 at MDI, e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart, and Grofers rolled out the maximum internship offers across these management schools. “The focus is to bring the best talent. We see any softening of hiring by our traditional on-campus competitors as an opportunity to further strengthen our talent pool,” said Rahul Guha, Managing Director of the <keyword id="136162" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boston-Consulting-Group">Boston Consulting Group</keyword>, which plans to hire over 100 interns across locations in India. India’s top b-school graduates are being paid over ₹2 lakh for summer internships

600 million millennials and counting, that’s pretty much twice the entire population of the US that India can draw upon as it pursues what the country’s first Prime Minister, <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword>, had termed as India’s “tryst with destiny.” 
 
A new generation of Indians, unfettered by the tags that the West bestowed upon the nation (developing, socialist, poor and more) for much of its independent history, has profound consequences for the global world order. Yet, how these millennials think and act today will offer an interesting insight into how history will view their contribution to the evolution of India. 
 
Understanding them inside out A survey conducted by the <keyword id="6356045" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Institute-of-Social-Sciences">Tata Institute of Social Sciences</keyword> (TISS) reveals that Indian millennials share certain common traits, observed in the millennials across the globe. Looking at a job as a life experience, rather than an end goal, accentuating life over work, being open about their likes and dislikes, demanding change, and emphasising action over thoughts are just some of the values that Indian millennials share with their global cousins. 
 
It is when you drill down into some of the specifics that the differentiating characteristics of the Indian millennials start to emerge. A study conducted by the telecom major Telefonica, along with the Financial Times, revealed that the Indian millennials far outstrip their Chinese, Russian and South Korean counterparts when it comes to believing that they can impact global change. 
 Attitude towards technology seems to play a major role in this belief, with 78% of Indians surveyed in the study saying that technology has benefited everyone. Having witnessed and directly benefited from India’s rise as an IT outsourcing superpower, and having seen non-resident Indians achieve great success in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, we can easily comprehend the key drivers behind such confidence. 
 
The <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> within 
As more than 70% of the Indians live in villages, gaining insight into the millennial mindset essentially requires reaching far beyond the Indian cities. That is why people like Shashank Mani, an alumnus of IIT-Delhi, are connecting the Indian millennials across the urban-rural divide. Mani’s Jagriti Yatra was a 15-day journey of awakening, focusing on India’s young and restless. In this unique yatra, a group of 450 carefully selected applicants set forth on a rail journey across the length and breadth of the country to see examples of change and hope in everyday surroundings. 
 
The rural success stories are a key part of that experience. Whether it is villages like Kuthambakkam in Kerala, which were rescued from social breakdown, or rural sanitation projects in the eastern coastal state of Odisha, the real need for change and the positive impact have been seen in rural India. 
 Motivating the rural youth not to take the easy path of urban migration and take on the onerous tasks in their respective local communities won’t be an easy sell. But with a stated goal of creating a million entrepreneurs by 2020, Mani and his team are clearly not fazed by tough challenges. The government (as governments are wont to do) has no shortage of schemes targeted at job creation for the Indian rural youth. But even the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> is now taking a new-age approach, tying up monetary incentives with skill development and certifications, rather than just doling out salaried employment. 
 
Are we upwardly mobile? 
If the railways and the automobiles had paved the way for the previous economic revolutions, there can be little doubt that the smartphone-driven information revolution will drive the next one if India’s millennials are to fulfil Nehru’s prophecy. 
 
In a country where 24x7 electricity &amp; water or good roads are not a given, the ownership and usage of mobile phones are surprisingly skyrocketing among the young population. John Sculley, the man most famous for firing Steve Jobs at Apple, is queuing up to make the most of this opportunity, along with companies, both domestic and foreign. 
 
Rural India has a mobile Internet penetration of less than 10%; so one can easily imagine the huge untapped potential there. For the sceptics, a fivefold growth in rural users between 2012 and 2013 should clear up any lingering doubt. 
 
This love affair between the mobile and the millennials has been globally observed as well. But where India differs from the rest of the world is that the mobile is sometimes the only means to connect to the Internet or make a long-distance call. Add to that the fact that there will be more millennials in a large Indian state like Uttar Pradesh than in some of the European countries, and you will realise the full impact of the outcome. 
 
The social standpoint 
In spite of the new attitude and lifestyle that the Indian millennials are bringing to the society, they are the product of their own cultural environment. Therefore, expecting a complete break from the traditional Indian values would be a tad unrealistic. 
 A study by the advertising firm <keyword id="6375201" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="JWT">JWT</keyword> echoes this, terming the Indian millennials as “Tech Savvy Traditionalists.” You are far more likely to find an Indian millennial staying in a large extended family or with his parents, but that is hardly the case with his/her peer in the West. Traditional attitude towards thrift and getting a good bargain for the money spent remain deeply ingrained in their mindset. 
 
An overwhelming 86% of Indian millennials want to preserve family traditions and a similar percentage of people believe these are important to hold the society together. However, these numbers display an urban bias. So factoring in the rural response will only increase the percentage. 
 
Millennials are hot property for companies that wish to sell to them but for social observers, this global yet local story of the Indian millennials promises to provide even more food for thought.

Godrej Properties acquires Raj Kapoor's Bungalow in Mumbai

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Facebook on Saturday said its centralised resource centre called Emotional Health, launched this week to help people cope with growing mental health issues in the pandemic, is now available with locally relevant information from its Indian partners. The partners in India are mental health campaign 'OK to Talk', iCALL Psychosocial Helpline (Tata Institute of Social Sciences), and The Live Love Laugh Foundation that will provide mental health helplines and resources catering to the local needs of users. "Our Covid-19 Information Centre and Emotional Health, launched ahead of the Mental Health Day on the Facebook app, provides people with access to tips and information from leading experts," said Ajit Mohan, Managing Director and Vice-President, Facebook India. "We have also launched eight new wellbeing guides on Instagram, along with partners," he said in a statement. On Mental Health Day on Saturday, Instagram launched a 'The Real Talk' content series in partnership with the Under25 community and The Artidote. It's a three-part video series, hosted by the founder of The Artidote, Jovanny Ferreyra, a global mental health advocate. "While mental health tools, resources and community guidelines are powerful and necessary components of making the social media experience a positive one, the majority of interaction still happens between members of a community," Mohan said. More than six million people in the Asia-Pacific region are part of over 35,000 active groups dedicated to mindfulness and mental well-being. The average stipend of ₹85,060 for two months is a 37% increase from last year. This includes both domestic and international internships. At <keyword id="349500" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Udaipur">IIM Udaipur</keyword>, 31 students bagged international offers — a massive 138% increase compared to last year. Plastic waste as school fees: A school in Assam adopts a novel idea

New Delhi, May 26 () Tata Trusts on Tuesday said it has tied up with two medical institutions to assist some of their healthcare professionals augment skills in critical care in COVID-19 management through an online training. The company has partnered with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and Care Institute of Health Sciences (CIHS), Hyderabad along with the Tata Group for this initiative. Under the programme, 22-hour free online training for medical professionals on COVID-19 critical care has been curated which is meant for specific staff chosen by identified hospitals, Tata Trusts said in a statement. "Tata Trusts believes that ICU physicians and intensivists, specialised in critical care management, will require support of a wider cohort of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to treat COVID-19 patients. The intent of the training programmes is to meet this need by acquainting non-ICU professionals with the fundamental principles and practices of critical care," it added. The training includes essentials of interventions and procedures in ICUs, orientation of critical care skills like airway management and ventilator management, and how to triage a criticality as mild, moderate or severe and refer cases to appropriate facilities, the statement said. "The programmes will also cover essentials of managing variegated facilities for COVID-19 management, such as isolation centres, quarantine centres, and management of service areas and patients with mild illness," it added. CMC Vellore's method trains and develops master trainers, who in turn can coach wider groups in their respective facilities. CIHS Hyderabad's method directly trains small groups. Both the institutions have designed their programmes such that participants can provide the required support to their intensivist and ICU colleagues should the need arise. This is the fourth such intervention of Tata Trusts to support India in its COVID-19 response. It has upgraded four government hospital buildings, two in Uttar Pradesh and two in Maharashtra, into COVID-19 treatment centres. The facilities, including both in-patient and out-patient wings, are permanent and will enduringly enhance healthcare in their locations, even after the immediate purpose is met.
