Electric two-wheeler sales cross the 1 lakh mark after four months, Ola Electric leads the market

The stock went up 5.73 per cent to Rs 2,121.30 on the BSE. On the NSE, it climbed 6.32 per cent to Rs 2,123. TVS Motor Company on Wednesday said its net profit increased 15 per cent to Rs 387 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2024, riding on robust sales. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 336 crore in the January-March period of the previous fiscal. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 10,042 crore in the period under review compared with Rs 8,031 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23. In the fourth quarter, the company said its overall <keyword id="19948209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler" source="keywords">two-wheeler</keyword> and three-wheeler sales, including exports, grew by 22 per cent to 10.63 lakh units compared to 8.68 lakh units in the same period of the 2022-23 fiscal. For the year ended on March 31, 2024, the company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,686 crore as against Rs 1,329 crore a year ago. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 39,145 crore in FY24 over Rs 31,974 crore in the 2022-23 fiscal. TVS Motor shares climb over 6% after March quarter earnings

<ul><li>Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales in April as compared to the same period last year.</li><li>Hero MotoCorp announced a dip of 5% in its total wholesales as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year.</li><li>Maruti Suzuki reported a growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles, while TVS Motor announced a 4% rise in sales to 3.06 lakh units in April.</li></ul>Shares of automobile companies remained in focus on Tuesday after the April sales data of Tata Motors and Hero MotoCorp disappointed the street. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor and Eicher Motor reported healthy growth in sales. Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales to 68,514 units in April as compared to 71,467 units during the same period last year. Total commercial vehicle sales of the automaker also dipped 27% to 22,492 units in April from 30,838 units last year. Also, its total wholesales declined 4% to 69,599 units as compared to 72,468 units last year. Following the weak sales, shares of Tata Motors fell more than 2% on Tuesday. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported a dip of 5% in its total wholesales — as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year. Shares of Hero MotoCorp were down more than 2%. Domestic sales for the two wheeler maker declined marginally to 3.86 lakh units in April 2023 from 3.98 lakh units in April 2022. But its exports slumped over 50% to 9,923 units from 20,132 units last year. The company said it expects the momentum to build up in the coming months on account of a combination of multiple factors, including a slew of new product launches, a healthy growth in the country's GDP and positive consumer sentiment. Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor, Eicher Motors shine India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki announced a good sales growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles to 1.6 lakh units in April as compared to 1.5 lakh during the same period last year. It registered a 7% increase in total dispatches to dealers at 1.6 lakh in April. Its total sales including domestic and exports rose to 1.6 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units last year. As a result, shares of Maruti Suzuki gained 2.15% to ₹8,771. The automaker’s total domestic sales including PV, LCV and OEM stood at 1.43 lakh units as compared to 1.32 lakh units last year. Maruti Suzuki highlighted that it has been facing a shortage of electronic components while it has taken all possible measures to minimise the impact. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company announced a 4% rise in sales at 3.06 lakh units in April 2023 from 2.95 lakh units in the same month, last year. TVS’ two-wheeler segment delivered a sales growth of 5% to 2.94 lakh units from 2.8 lakh units during the same period last year. Motorcycle volumes rose 10% to 1.52 lakh units from 1.39 lakh units. Scooter sales grew 5% to 1.07 lakh units from 1.02 lakh units last year. Reacting to the April sales numbers, shares of TVS rose 1.55% to ₹1,156 per share. Its electric vehicle, the iQube, reached a sales milestone of 1 lakh units. “The production for April 2023 was constrained due to AIS156 changeover and supply chain challenges, TVS Motor is confident of ramping up from the month of May 2023. The order book for TVS iQube continues to be very robust and TVS Motor will retain the growth momentum,” said the company in an exchange filing. At the same time, Eicher Motors reported a 18% on year jump in sales volumes of Royal Enfield motorcycles at 73,136 units against 62,155 units last year. Meanwhile, the international business of the company declined 49% to 4,255 units that were exported in April 2023 as against 8,303 units in April 2022. The models with engine capacity up to 350cc recorded 26% sales growth at 64,728 units as against 51,564 units in April 2022. Meanwhile, the sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc dropped 21% to 8,408 units sold against 10,591 units in the same period last year. Urban demand, festive sales and pre-buying due to the BS6 Phase 2 transition helped boost the overall volumes – once again driven by passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles – despite supply chain challenges and a semiconductor chip shortage, according to the research firm. India auto sales seen rising 7-9% in FY24: Passenger & commercial vehicles to drive demand

India’s automobile sector is expected to get a boost during the upcoming festive season, with a forecasted growth of over 15%, particularly in the two-wheeler (2W) segment. A key factor driving this surge is the anticipated revival of rural demand, which contributes more than 55% to the two-wheeler market. According to the report, rural areas are showing strong signs of recovery, and the increased enquiries suggest a positive outlook for sales. This bodes well for mass-market original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as TVS Motors, <keyword id="19983534" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hero-motocorp" source="keywords">Hero MotoCorp</keyword>, and <keyword id="19897354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="keywords">Bajaj Auto</keyword>. Strong top-line growth and better margins should fuel double-digit earnings per share compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) for most companies,” said Jefferies. While passenger vehicles witnessed premiumisation in FY23 as well, as witnessed by the sustained growth in demand for the costlier sports utility vehicles (SUV) over entry-level options, analysts suggest a similar trend of premium two-wheelers is also emerging. After languishing since FY19, two-wheeler growth to outpace passenger vehicles in FY24-25

<ul><li>India’s auto sector could be looking at mixed performance in March, with some segments likely to clock better growth than others. </li><li>Passenger vehicles, one of the segments that have been driving sales in the past few months, could be looking at a flat March. </li><li>Commercial vehicles are expected to continue growing thanks to infrastructure-led demand seeing a healthy fleet utilisation in the medium to heavy commercial vehicles (MHCV) category. </li></ul>The Indian auto sector could be looking at mixed performance in March due to a combination of erratic rainfall dampening demand for light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and a moderation in demand for passenger vehicles (PVs) during the month, as observed by analysts at <keyword id="46252" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="motilal-oswal" source="Orion">Motilal Oswal</keyword>. The brokerage expects a slight uptick in demand for two-wheelers during the month on account of festivals and a low base of the previous year. However, concerns about weakness in the rural markets could drag down the overall numbers. Although the inventory level has increased to 25-30 days in March versus 20-25 days till February end, it has now come back to the normal level after three years,” the brokerage said. Sports utility vehicles (SUV) continue to be in demand, with waiting periods still being long. For instance, M&amp;M’s popular duo of SUVs, the Scorpio-N and XUV 700 have a waiting period of 3-10 months, and 2-5 months, respectively. Despite a moderation in demand, discounts have been muted, the brokerage noted, adding that it expects M&amp;M’s sales to rise 16% year-on-year, while Tata Motors could see a modest 3% growth. The brokerage also witnessed a large variation in enquiries across states during festivals – while Gujarat, Delhi and Karnataka saw a 2-6% YoY increase in enquiries, UP, Bihar and Maharashtra reported a 4-8% decline. No festive cheer for auto cos in March: PV sales ‘flattish’, 2Ws to see a slight uptick

<ul><li>India’s 2-wheeler exports continue to struggle as demand from its largest market – <keyword id="12925" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="africa" source="Orion">Africa</keyword> – continues to slow down.</li><li>Two-wheeler makers are seeing a sharp rise in demand from new geographies like Brazil, Mexico, Philippines and Turkey.</li><li>While weak demand from Africa will impact volumes of <keyword id="6359783" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="Orion">Bajaj Auto</keyword> and <keyword id="62356" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tvs" source="Orion">TVS</keyword>, demand from other geographies hold promise. </li></ul> Export of two-wheelers, which were booming till a few years ago, have now hit the slow lane. In FY23, export of motorcycles declined by nearly 20% to 3.65 million units, while scooters clocked a rise. Africa was a very large market for India’s two-wheeler exports but that market has been slowing down in recent years. In FY20, Nigeria accounted for 25% of India’s overall two-wheeler exports, but in FY23 Nigeria’s share is down to 12%, shows industry data. The bad news is that all other African markets in the first quarter of the current fiscal year are also looking weak. As demand from African markets are expected to remain weak in FY24, it could impact volumes of Bajaj Auto and TVS. Now for the good news, there is demand for motorcycles and scooters made in India across new geographies like Mexico, Philippines, LatAm and Turkey. Going by the run rate of monthly volumes, the share of Philippines in India’s two-wheeler export market could rise to 8% in FY24 from 4% in FY22. African markets are expected to struggle as those economies continue to battle economic and political turmoil. Analysis done by Antique shows the change in India’s top exports markets for two-wheelers and why FY24 could see a turnaround. According to Antique, “In the first 3 months of FY24 the two-wheeler exports continued to remain weak with the overall decline of 31%. However, there are some green-shoots in terms of recovery in the exports of scooters with 40% growth. We however, see the exports recovering in the second half with the African markets recovering from the slowdown and expansion of Indian OEMs in the new geographies.” Auto analysts believe that with new export markets emerging, India’s flagging two-wheeler sales may get a boost. New demand for both scooters and motorcycles is likely to come from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Asia and LATAM demand for personal demand for personal mobility is visible. According to analysts, these geographies are different from African markets in terms of vehicle usage. While African countries use two-wheelers for commercial reasons, buyers in LATAM, Brazil and Philippines use two-wheelers for personal mobility. But to capitalise on rising demand in Brazil, Bajaj Auto is setting up an assembling plant in Brazil to capture the LATAM market and improve product mix. TVS Motors: For this two-wheeler, the largest export market in FY23 was Guinea. TVS exports have grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 11% between FY20–23 as demand from African markets grew. More than 60% of the exports of TVS came via Africa last financial year. Like Bajaj Auto, the company is looking to expand its footprint in LATAM and West Asia. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India: For this Japanese two-wheeler maker, Colombia is the largest market where it has gained share from Bajaj Auto, says <keyword id="190610" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antique-stock-broking" source="Orion">Antique Stock Broking</keyword>. LATAM again is a key focus market, even though it has a plant in nearby Bangladesh. Royal Enfield: The four top export markets for this leisure bike maker include: Brazil, US, Italy &amp; UK. These countries account for 51% of its export volumes. Brazil’s volumes grew 80% YoY in FY23, while Italy and US volumes grew 107% &amp; 30% year-on-year. It has 7% market share in the United States in the mid weight category and 9% in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle-East.
