Measures rolled out after the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-aggressive-monetary-stimulus-interest-rate-rrr-2024-9">initial stimulus announcement</a> last month have helped China's prospects of getting out of its slump, he says."There does seem to be a little more confidence now that wasn't there at the beginning about the Chinese stimulus measures, that they may actually have an appreciable impact on economic activity and demand," Yergin said.The most recent measures from Beijing include <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-3q-gdp-growth-stock-market-stimulus-2024-10">funding programs</a> that will inject as much as 800 billion Chinese yuan, or $112.6 billion, into its stock market, as well as a series of interest rate cuts.On the other hand, the market is also focused on uncertainty about the conflict in the Middle East, and if the war will actually impact oil infrastructure in the region, Yergin says.He says that's especially true after last week when Israel <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-killed-yahya-sinwar-thanks-luck-persistence-hamas-gaza-war-2024-10">killed its top target</a>, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. That part is unclear, and Iran has threatened to retaliate again," Yergin said.Yergin says the market is stuck in a state of "wait and see" as it assesses how the war could disrupt oil infrastructure. He adds that while the conflict was previously a proxy war, it could now become a direct conflict, raising the stakes even higher for the Middle East's oil market.As a result of these two forces, and with traders waiting to see which could have a greater impact on supply and demand dynamics, the oil market is in a holding pattern. Prices have seesawed between the low $70 level and around $80 as traders react to new developments. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, was trading about 1% lower on Wednesday at $75.30.

"I decided to go on a vipassana meditation course and it was interesting because I was wanting to actually leave the sport and move on to the next calling. That was my primary drive, to find my new calling." "I had to meditate for eight nine hours a day in complete silence for 10 days and all I did in that course was to think back to my sport and think back to how I loved the process of what I was doing," he said. Bindra said he was guilty of not realising his full potential since he judged himself on outcomes of tournaments. "For far too long, perhaps, I too was guilty in putting myself worth to wear my name, equating myself worth to where my name would appear on the ranking list of a sports competition and that was very silly," he said. "I became an Olympic champion, (a) world champion, I won many many championships but I failed in achieving my fullest and truest potential and now that I have a chance to look back I would attribute that failure to this lack of balance that I had in my life as an athlete. "I did not humanise my effort enough and I think that was while it helped me achieve goals it didn't help me get to my very best ability," he added.

So it might reduce the length of time that you're feeling unwell, or it might reduce the delays in your recovery," he said.A 2022 review of studies published in the journal Nutrients found zinc appeared to shorten the duration of colds and lessen symptoms, but <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Zinc-HealthProfessional/">more research is needed</a>. Most people in the US get enough zinc from their diets, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements, but Alam thinks taking zinc supplements is "worth a try" because most doses of zinc from shop-bought supplements "aren't going to cause any harm." It's important to note, though, that taking too much zinc (more than 40 milligrams a day for adults) can lead to nausea, dizziness, headaches, an upset stomach, vomiting, and loss of appetite, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.<h2 id="3d762adc-f729-4e07-a6d2-8450f36a6155">Vitamin D</h2>From September to whenever the weather improves in the spring, Alam also supplements his diet with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-much-vitamin-d-should-i-take">vitamin D</a>, which is necessary for bone health, calcium absorption in the gut, reducing inflammation, and immune function, according to the US Office of Dietary Supplements."Research says if you were to test every person in the UK at the end of a long winter, probably 40% of us would be vitamin D deficient. Especially with our lifestyles nowadays as we're more indoors," he said. In the US, about 35% of adults have vitamin D deficiency, according to Cleveland Clinic.Guidelines on supplementation are different around the world. For example, the UK government advises people to consider taking vitamin D during the fall and winter, whereas The Endocrine Society doesn't recommend vitamin D supplementation for healthy adults aged 19 to 74, because research doesn't suggest a clear amount which is effective for preventing disease.It's up to the individual to decide whether to take vitamin D supplements, but, like zinc, they are unlikely to cause harm when taken in safe amounts, Alam said.

While prevailing wage has "long applied" to federal projects, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, this is the first time it's been applied to clean energy tax incentives."This is a major step to put American workers at the center of the clean energy economy. It will help to attract and strengthen a skilled workforce in partnership with our nation's labor unions and private sector companies, and it'll help make sure this workforce is well paid," Yellen said in a call with reporters.The rule gets at one of the big issues facing the clean energy economy: It doesn't pay as well as jobs in more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22914487/clean-energy-fossil-fuels-salaries-unions">carbon-intensive fossil fuel energy</a>. For instance, a 2021 paper from the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Political Economy Research Institute <a target="_blank" href="https://peri.umass.edu/images/CA-CleanEnergy-6-8-21.pdf?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Recode%202.2.2022&amp;utm_term=Recode">found</a> that while clean energy work in California pays $86,000 — above the average national wage of $65,000 — fossil fuel work pays, on average, $130,000.Of course, there is now more opportunity for clean energy work as the industry grows, and some jobs have robust pay — but many roles <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-jobs-career-grow-pay-well-high-salary-2024">require a bachelor's degree or apprenticeship experience</a>, underscoring the importance of hiring apprentices.Sean McGarvey, president of North America's Buildings Trades Unions, told reporters that in the past, the average solar worker earned less than a quarter of NABTU members' total wage and benefits package."That's why we were so reluctant without these rules that are being put in place to embrace the clean energy transition; we were always talking about a just transition," McGarvey said. It's mostly China — the world's largest importer of crude oil."The main cause for the bearish sentiment has been a steady slowing of crude demand growth, especially in China," wrote Henning Gloystein, the practice head of energy, climate, and resources at the Eurasia Group, last month.The world's second-largest economy has been struggling to stage a convincing recovery post-pandemic and is battling multiple challenges, including a property crisis, high youth unemployment, and deflation.Beijing pulled out an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-aggressive-monetary-stimulus-interest-rate-rrr-2024-9">economic stimulus package</a> last week that massively boosted sentiment in China's previously downbeat stock markets, but most analysts are saying the measures are just not enough to turn the situation around on the ground.Even Chinese leader Xi Jinping <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/xi-jinping-painful-road-ahead-rainy-days-new-stimulus-china-2024-10">acknowledged</a> the extent of China's problems in the country's National Day speech on Monday, saying the path forward wouldn't be smooth.BMI, a research firm, wrote last week that short positions in Brent outnumbered longs for the first time earlier in September."Sentiment in the market is already weak, with a bearish macro narrative weighing heavily to the downside, and investors are currently far more responsive to bearish price drivers than to bullish ones," wrote BMI's analysts.The sentiment over China has been so poor that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/saudi-arabia-oil-prices-brent-crude-outlook-opec-production-cuts-2024-9">Saudi Arabia</a> has pretty much thrown in the towel on pushing oil higher.The kingdom — which is the world's largest crude exporter and OPEC's de facto leader — is giving up its $100 per barrel price target and ready to increase oil output, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/1d186f62-5941-4f9e-aef1-7d93a8a696cd">Financial Times</a> reported last week.This means that Saudi Arabia is looking to corner a larger market share instead of targeting higher profit margins by restricting output.This would be a big shift in policy, since Saudi Arabia has been leading OPEC and the group's allies, including Russia, in maintaining oil supply cuts since late 2022.Despite the downside pressure on oil prices, things could change quickly if geopolitical uncertainty rises further in the Middle East.The US may also provide some support to the market as crude oil inventories hit a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-crude-gasoline-distillate-inventories-fall-eia-says-2024-09-25/">two-and-a-half year low</a> as of September 20, the latest data available."Yes, it is true that traders are worried about the fact that Chinese demand for oil is not back yet to a level that can make the OPEC stop extending the supply cut process," wrote Naeem Aslam, the CIO at London-based Zaye Capital Markets."However, the fact that the US oil stockpiles are clearing more quickly indicates that the demand for oil in the world's largest economy is trending in the right direction, which is positive for price action," Aslam added.

It probably took at least a few minutes, maybe hours, before your power turned back on.Most likely, that's because workers at your local utility first had to assess how to restore your power. Then dispatchers had to drive to the nearby switches that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-winter-storm-power-cuts-white-house-emergency-declaration-2021-2">control the flow of energy</a> and manually flip them until everyone's lights were back on.Not in Chattanooga, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-tennessee-pros-cons-nashville-memphis-chattanooga-2023-2">Tennessee</a>. "It is a challenge. Renewables, including wind, solar, and hydropower, represented about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wri.org/insights/clean-energy-progress-united-states">25% of the electricity generated</a> in the US in the first half of 2023.And this year is off to a solid start. South Fork Wind — New York's first offshore wind farm — began powering homes in March. And the Edwards &amp; Sanborn project, the US's largest solar energy and energy storage project in California, came online in January.Renewable energy is not only cleaner than fossil fuels but also often less expensive."In many parts of the United States, wind and or solar are basically the cheapest ways that we can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-panel-industry-electricity-generation-us-eia-tariff-prices-trade-2024-2">generate electricity</a>," Rand said.But we have a long way to go to reach 100% clean electricity by 2035. Renewables are intermittent energy sources. Unlike fossil fuels, the amount of energy they generate fluctuates. But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-funds-betting-electricity-power-grid-congestion-trading-2024-3">our grid system wasn't designed</a> to handle that variation.Plugging intermittent energy sources into this outdated grid network can cause problems, such as energy imbalances that exceed capacity and trigger outages, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stevens.edu/profile/podonkor">Philip Odonkor</a>, an assistant professor in the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology, told BI.So what's happened is a bottleneck: Renewable projects are generating energy but with limited ways of getting it to towns and cities. At the end of 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2022-04/Queued%20Up%E2%80%A6But%20in%20Need%20of%20Transmission.pdf">930 gigawatts</a> of power — enough to power <a target="_blank" href="https://www.seia.org/solar-industry-research-data">roughly</a> 171 million homes — were waiting to connect to the grid.To achieve zero-emissions electricity by 2035, the US needs to revamp the grid with up to 10,100 miles of new transmission lines that can transport renewable energy from point A to point B. The Midwest grid operator, Midcontinent Independent System Operator, has approved the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nrdc.org/bio/toba-pearlman/midwest-grid-operators-inching-forward-miles-go-0">country's largest transmission investment</a> to date, totaling $10.3 billion, to improve how it delivers electricity to 45 million people across the Midwest.But in general, construction on new high-voltage transmission has slowed to a trickle over the past decade, Rand said. In 2013, the US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ferc.gov/sites/default/files/2020-05/dec-energy-infrastructure_3.pdf">completed</a> over 3,000 miles of transmission projects. Last year, it <a target="_blank" href="https://cms.ferc.gov/media/energy-infrastructure-update-december-2023">completed</a> 251 miles.It's not economic or technology barriers holding these projects back, Rand said: "It's institutional, regulatory, and social issues."<h2 id="ed839077-604c-48e7-a55c-f3e216767d9a">Breaking down barriers</h2><div type="image" title="A man walks through a power station" height="1937" width="3000" msid="110091239" hostid="261" sizebytes="1045202"></div>When South Fork Wind began operations in March, it was a major milestone but also years behind schedule. Economic headwinds struck in 2020 with the Trump administration's moratorium on offshore wind, which stalled progress for two years."The clearest delay for South Fork was losing those years of progress," said <a target="_blank" href="https://wrisenergy.org/about-wrise/leadership/board/">Julia Bovey</a>, the director of external affairs for offshore wind at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eversource.com/content/residential">Eversource Energy</a>, which co-owns South Fork Wind with <a target="_blank" href="https://us.orsted.com/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwir2xBhC_ARIsAMTXk84wQN2zsVWYlPKJurVNpM-v2sPcNdUtPeJL5HMpCMOYQ9fYAfdwwnwaAu_mEALw_wcB">Ørsted</a>.Other obstacles stand in the way of clean energy — the biggest being the lengthy permitting process and interconnection queue delays. The permitting process for renewable-energy projects involves massive amounts of paperwork and can take <a target="_blank" href="https://www.osc.ny.gov/press/releases/2024/04/dinapoli-renewable-energy-projects-taking-years-become-operational-nys#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20the%20permit%20application,permit%20process%20is%20not%20improved">three or more years to finish</a>.In the end, about <a target="_blank" href="https://emp.lbl.gov/sites/default/files/2024-04/Queued%20Up%202024%20Edition_1.pdf">80%</a> don't make it to completion, and those that do can get stuck in the clogged interconnection queue for as long as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2024/03/01/the-energy-sector-and-ai-unplugging-the-interconnection-queue-backlog/?sh=4932ad4162f4">five more years</a>. By the end of 2023, almost <a target="_blank" href="https://emp.lbl.gov/sites/default/files/2024-04/Queued%20Up%202024%20Edition_1.pdf">12,000 projects</a> were in the queue, waiting to be connected to the grid."It's a seriously complex process with so many stakeholders," Bovey said.South Fork Wind was the first utility-scale offshore-wind project in the US to make it through this process. In doing so, it revealed a lot of issues that could be fixed through standardization and better agency coordination, Bovey said. But it also proved that bringing offshore wind online was possible."Every hope is that this has paved the way for future projects to be cheaper, bigger, faster, and just as responsible — just as well sited," Bovey said.On the whole, Paul Denholm, a principal analyst and senior research fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is more skeptical of the country's prospects. We'll be closer to a 50% renewable-power grid by 2035 with the way things are going, he told BI.Right now, we lack the federal policy necessary to solve regulatory and permitting delays, clear the interconnection queue, and drive rapid infrastructure upgrades and technology implementation, Denholm said.For example, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator's transmission investment, while noteworthy, took 11 years to get approval, and its next series of approvals have been delayed."So from that standpoint, it's pretty clear that we're not on a path to get to 100%," Denholm said.<h2 id="a55db279-156b-40fd-940e-ba037839bbdf">There's no going back</h2><div type="image" title="An electric vehicle charges in California" height="683" width="1024" msid="110091241" hostid="261" sizebytes="41490"></div>Regardless of how quickly the US gets there, we're headed for a clean-energy revolution. The federal government has invested nearly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/infrastructure/clean-energy-infrastructure-funding-projects-and-programs">$100 billion</a> in clean energy through its Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.Old infrastructure must be modernized across the country because the production and use of energy are going to get much more complicated.Nationwide, the grid draws power from about 12,000 power plants. Over the next 20 years or so, it will have to balloon to incorporate millions of small, distributed energy-generation resources, from hydropower dams to offshore wind farms to rooftop solar panels.Then there will be the batteries, which store wind and solar energy until a rainy day. Meanwhile, newly electrified cars and heating systems will increase energy demand.Eventually, home appliances may tap into data from the grid — how much people are drawing energy from it, how much carbon it's emitting, and how much electricity costs at any given hour — to help you make smart decisions about when to wash your dishes or heat your house."Historically it was meant to go one way," Schneider said of the grid. "Now we've got solar that pushes power back in. We've got EVs. We've got new loads like heat pumps. So the edge is getting so much more complicated with a lot more stakeholders in there."Smart grids are essential for integrating all that new stuff. The rollout of smart-grid technologies, renewable projects, and new transmission lines will happen piecemeal across the country, at different paces in different places, depending on policies, utility finances, and the economy — high up-front costs can be a major deterrent. However, the return on investment can be even greater.Take Chattanooga. EPB spent $280 million to refurbish its power system with smart technologies. In its first 10 years, the project generated $2.7 billion worth of economic value by creating jobs, attracting businesses, and reducing customers' electricity bills, an EPB-funded <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.epb.com/media/Lobo%20-%20Ten%20Years%20of%20Fiber%20Infrastructure%20in%20Hamilton%20County%20TN_Published.pdf">study</a> found.MISO foresees a similar return on its $10.3 billion investment. It estimates that investment will bring <a target="_blank" href="https://blog.ucsusa.org/sam-gomberg/midwest-transmission-system-investments-will-be-a-game-changer-for-a-clean-energy-future/">$37.3 billion of value</a> for customers by transporting cheaper, more reliable power. So the benefits can outweigh the cost."As we move forward, things are becoming more complex," Schneider said. "And we need to find ways to work together collaboratively. Because no one group or organization has all the answers, it's going to be a lot of different things coming together."

What it will take to modernize the American grid and usher in the clean-energy revolution

A relationship coach wants professional women to stop dating with 'intern energy'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Manoj Bhargava has got rich from 5-Hour Energy. Now he's buying TV and digital media.</li><li>He took control of Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group in late 2023, laying off dozens.</li></ul>Update: On Monday, Minute Media said it had been awarded the license to publish Sports Illustrated "across digital and print platforms." The New York Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/18/business/sports-illustrated-magazine.html">reported </a>that it would hire an unspecified number of journalists laid off by Arena Group, and the SI union said that it welcomes the change and looks forward to discussions with Minute Media. Representatives for Arena Group, Bhargava, and Authentic Brands Group didn't immediately reply to comment requests. Employees of the Arena Group, which publishes Sports Illustrated and other news and lifestyle websites, weren't sure what to expect when Manoj Bhargava, who had just bought a huge chunk of the company's shares and debt, called an all-hands meeting last December.Bhargava had made his fortune with gas-station staple 5-Hour Energy. A week earlier, he had become a large minority shareholder at The Arena Group, but had no official title. Nevertheless, he had already directed the head of HR to <a target="_blank" href="https://futurism.com/sports-illustrated-publisher-shakeup-ai">fire three executives the day before</a>.Now, Bhargava was hosting an in-person and Zoom meeting to outline his vision for Arena. It didn't get off to an auspicious start. Audio issues meant those attending by Zoom — the majority of the company — couldn't hear anything. When the audio finally turned on, Bhargava's mind was apparently elsewhere."He was talking about purifying water and he has some device he distributes to Third World countries, like an internet device," said a current Sports Illustrated employee. "I was like, 'I don't know what this has to do with us.'"Bhargava eventually turned to the company he was attempting to take over. The verdict was not kind."The amount of useless stuff you guys do is staggering," he said. The company Bhargava claimed to be taking over was so poorly run that he questioned the intelligence of those in the meeting. "I'm surprised you're still here," he said. "You're not very smart to stay at this company."Steve Janisse, a spokesman for Bhargava, said he was joking. He also said Bhargava was talking about his charitable endeavors in order to underscore his priorities to Arena Group employees.Media, Bhargava said in the meeting, was "biased." In an exchange that raised the eyebrows of several people BI spoke to, he asked, "Why should the story be 'White cop kills black man?' It should just be 'Cop kills man.'"Vince Bodiford, a spokesman for Bhargava, said he was recounting a discussion about editorial values and priorities that took place at NewsNet, a media property he acquired in 2022. He didn't mean to express a preference or dictate an editorial stance at Arena, Bodiford said.Bhargava said he was reorganizing the company, getting rid of some "big names" to make the company more effective, and that "tasks, not titles" were what was important."No one is important," he said."I am not important."Days later, Bhargava sacked Arena Group CEO <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/read-sports-illustrated-publisher-ross-levinsohn-resigns-explosive-letter-2024-1">Ross Levinsohn</a>, too, causing Levinsohn to angrily resign from the board. One of the fired executives, Rob Barrett said in a lawsuit that he didn't get severance, and three people told Business Insider that more lawsuits are likely on the way.Arena has an unusual arrangement with its most important title: While the publisher employs Sports Illustrated's staff of editors and writers and produces the magazine and associated web site, it doesn't actually own the globally recognized voice in sports journalism. It licenses the right to use the Sports Illustrated name from Authentic Brands Group. Not long after the executive bloodbath, Arena failed to make its quarterly $3.75 million licensing payment to ABG, resulting in the publishing license being yanked.Some writers say they fear the missed payment was a bad-faith pretext to scrap their union contract; one former Arena employee called it a game of "billionaire chicken." On January 19, the Sports Illustrated notified at least 80 staffers that they were being laid off.Now ABG is actively negotiating with Arena and others about the SI brand's future. ABG had misgivings about Bhargava even before the default, according to someone with knowledge of the situation. ABG has said Sports Illustrated would endure; in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/01/19/sports-illustrated-layoffs/"> a January interview</a> with the Washington Post, ABG's CEO Jamie Salter was blunt about his talks with Bhargava, saying, "I told him to fuck off.""No one really knows what Manoj's angle is," said a fourth person familiar with the situation. "He benefits from this perception that he's crazy like a fox."<h2>A 5-Hour empire expanding</h2>Born in India, Manoj Bhargava had an eccentric trajectory before striking it rich with 5-Hour Energy, including a brief stint as an undergrad at Princeton, a decade spent with an Indian ashram, and a period acquiring and turning around small plastics manufacturing companies (the same business his father had gone into). At a trade show in 2003, he tried an energy drink and felt great — and realized there would be a market if he made the drink smaller.In 2012, Forbes profiled him, characterizing him as a "reclusive monk," and concluding that his ownership of 5-Hour Energy had turned him into a billionaire. The article highlighted his commitments to charity, though it raised questions about how his charities were funded and what they do. Some of those transactions have been scrutinized by the IRS and wound up in United States Tax Court.More recently, he has been investing in media. He acquired NewsNet, a Michigan broadcasting company, in 2022, and said he invested $50 million to build new studios and acquire over-the-air television stations. NewsNet's CEO, Bodiford, is also Bhargava's personal spokesman and a nominee to be on Arena Group's board. The move into media was motivated by the growing cost of advertising for 5-Hour Energy, said Janisse, the spokesman for Bhargava who is also a contributor to NewsNet."He said, 'If it's getting more expensive, maybe that's a business I should get into,'" Janisse said.NewsNet, with the motto: "News…as it used to be," and its parent company, Bridge Media, are due to merge with Arena, which likely has a much larger reach than any of Bhargava's pre-existing holdings. Janisse said some of its local TV stations have only recently begun contracting with Nielsen to measure their audiences.Arena, despite the reach of brands like SI, Mens Journal, The Street, and Parade, has been losing money for years and its reputation has been hammered. In 2023, three of its publications were <a target="_blank" href="https://futurism.com/sports-illustrated-ai-generated-writers">caught</a> publishing deceptive or wrong AI-generated content. Such stories even ran in Sports Illustrated, whose covers still carry cachet even as it has been pared back and competing sports media outlets have scaled up.Arena's losing streak was Bhargava's opportunity. In August, he <a target="_blank" href="https://investors.thearenagroup.net/news-releases/news-release-details/arena-group-signs-binding-loi-combine-bridge-media-networks">signed a letter of intent</a> to acquire Arena, which had more than $110 million in high-interest debt, with $50 million in cash and $60 in advertising commitments. It was cemented in a <a target="_blank" href="https://investors.thearenagroup.net/news-releases/news-release-details/arena-group-signs-definitive-agreement-combine-bridge-media">series of agreements</a> struck in early November.Oddly, the Hans Foundation, a non-profit where Bhargava was president until 2021 and remains the primary funder, agreed to purchase $25 million in preferred stock alongside the 5-Hour International Corporation."As many charitable trusts do, they make their own investments, and they felt that this was a good investment, and that's why they put their money into the deal," said Janisse.Rather than waiting for the deal to close, however, on December 1, Bhargava made a separate attempt to control Arena through the side door, moving to acquire a large chunk of shares and all Arena's debt from B. Riley, an upstart investment bank that is dealing with its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/how-an-unremarkable-deal-became-a-big-threat-to-a-small-investment-bank-f819a169?mod=hp_lead_pos4">own crises</a>. Asked why Bhargava did this, Janisse declined to comment.Since then, he has invested more money into Arena and now controls an outright majority of its shares. Bhargava's company still has not invested based on the terms outlined in the November agreements from August 2023, though it has until August 2024 to fulfill that obligation.Bhargava has said Arena was in worse financial shape than he originally believed. In an email, Janisse said the November agreements are "still in flux." He said the choice in early January was to make payroll or to pay the license fee, and he chose the former. Some are skeptical."I think he dragged his feet intentionally on the original Arena deal because he saw an opportunity," said a source close to the negotiations, theorizing that Bhargava saw Arena's falling stock price as an opportunity to acquire the company cheaply and renegotiate terms struck in August. "I think he's always looking for an angle."<h2>The scrutiny that comes with controlling Sports Illustrated</h2>While Arena Group controls over two hundred media brands, there's no question SI is Arena's crown jewel. Janisse said it gets about 80 million unique visitors a month. Other properties, like The Street and Parade, get about 20 million uniques each, he said.He said the company has made several proposals to ABG and is awaiting a response. Arena said it plans to shutter the print magazine in May, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/14/business/media/sports-illustrated-print-edition.html">according</a> toh e New York Times, although two people familiar with the situation say managers have already walked that back. Janisse said in a Sunday email that Arena had "given the SI print edition and SI SWIM back to Authentic.""We are willing to help them find a solution so they can continue to print the magazine if they wish," he wrote.Two other people familiar with the situation say Bhargava is focused on being able to license the "SI TV" brand, as previously reported by the New York Post."What's most interesting to Manoj and Arena is the digital side, the website, and the multimedia portion," Janisse said. "That doesn't mean there won't be good storytelling happening, but that's the part that Arena is most interested in."Other<a target="_blank" href="https://nypost.com/2024/01/29/business/sports-illustrated-draws-interest-from-2-more-bidders-including-jeff-zuckers-front-office-sports-sources/"> companies in the running</a> for parts of the Sports Illustrated license include Minute Media, which publishes The Players' Tribune, and Front Office Sports, a sports media company that specializes in newsletters.Many who spoke with BI said they believe Minute Media is the frontrunner to gain the rights to SI. At an Arena Group planning meeting for Sports Illustrated held in Michigan last week, Bhargava seemed "defeated," according to a source with knowledge of the meeting.Losing the rights to Sports Illustrated would represent a setback for Arena Group, which has already seen its <a target="_blank" href="https://ycharts.com/companies/AREN/market_cap">market cap sink</a> from a high of $288 million in December 2022 to $31 million at the end of trading on Friday.Multiple people BI spoke to said it was never clear why Bhargava wanted to acquire and operate Arena in the first place, and that he lacked a coherent vision for what he would do with SI or Arena Group. His experience to date has been mainly running private companies, a current Arena Group employee said, and he may have been unprepared for the scrutiny a public company like Arena, or being associated with Sports Illustrated, would bring."If he introduces a new 5-Hour Energy flavor, that's his call," said the current Arena employee. "I think he's finding out that there's just a higher level of scrutiny to his actions, especially when there's a beloved brand."
