Now, the international students who enrol in online classes initially for university courses in the UK will also be eligible for the post study work-visa. In an <a href="https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/letter_to_prospective_international_students.pdf">open lette</a>r to international students, the UK Minister of State for Universities, Michelle Donelan MP together with Education Ministers from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as the Minister for Exports at the Department of International Trade, said that “International students present in the UK before 6 April 2021 will still be eligible for the two year Graduate route, if you meet the other requirements of the route, even if you begin your course online before travelling to the UK in person.” The UK government also addressed the concerns around the study visa. The foreign students will be able to apply for a Tier IV visa soon. “Despite some COVID-19 disruptions to visa processes and exam timetables, you can still get started with the process. For example, you can familiarise yourself with UK visa requirements and talk to your chosen universities about evidence you may need to supply for a visa application,” the letter<a href="https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/letter_to_prospective_international_students.pdf"> said</a>. This comes after many students who were earlier considering universities abroad now cancelled their plans due to coronavirus. Many universities have shifted to online classes for even full-time courses for the current semester. However, the students are preferring to defer to next year to enroll in the January 2021 batch because they are still unsure of the online model. “The recent changes to post-study work, which will now be available to international graduates for two years, including those who have undertaken part of their studies online due to COVID-19, is a welcome move. These practical changes and this initiative to directly address international students looking to the UK as a study destination will go a long way to reassuring prospective international students that the UK is still the best destination for their studies,” said Emma Lancaster, CEO of <keyword id="307962" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Study-Group">Study Group</keyword>, which prepares foreign students for university degree programmes. Santiago Piñón, an assistant professor of religion at <keyword id="1842596" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="TCU">TCU</keyword>, sent an email to nine of his <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> that he identified as "students of color" to "discuss the challenges they may face during the semester."
He closes the email by writing, "I don't mind if this would turn out to be a study session for my STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY."
One student who recieved the email told IHE, "After I read it, I read the names [of the other recipients] and they were just Hispanic last names." This student said her last name is of Hispanic origin, although she doesn't strongly identify as Hispanic, and she laughed when she opened the email.
Piñón told IHE that the email was "misunderstood," and that he "should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students." However, as Gawker points out, <a href="http://gawker.com/professor-invites-students-of-color-only-to-study-gro-1324625064">this seems to contradict his claim of the study group being for "students of color only."</a>

TCU Professor Criticized For Sending Study Group Email Only To 'Students Of Color'

<ul><li>The X Index, Havas CX’s barometer of <keyword id="1284549" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Customer-Experience">customer experience</keyword> efficiency, surveyed 28,000 consumers across five markets, scoring 250+ brands against 40 criteria.</li><li>It sheds light on the dual but contrasting needs of consumers, who demand an almost Darwinist functional efficiency while simultaneously seeking an emotional connection from the brands they interact with (and buy from).</li></ul>Efficiency and emotion are the two most important factors when it comes to good CX (customer experience), says a new Havas study- the X Index. The study is based on consumer attitudes towards (CX) as a practice by brands. The X Index, which surveyed 28,000 consumers across five markets - China, France, India, UK and US - found that of the 40 criteria analysed, two factors- ‘the customer journey was simple’ and ‘the customer journey was pleasant’ scored the highest – even above other factors including brand loyalty, customer service and price. The report is presented by Havas CX – an international network dedicated to delivering meaningful brand experiences across the entire customer journey. It brings together more than 1500 people from 20 of Havas Creative’s global agency groups and local agencies, plus additional CX specialists from across the Havas network, under a common structure, governance, methodology and mission. It may be recalled that the India launch of Havas CX happened in October 2020. Havas CX spans 25 major Havas Villages around the world, with key hubs in London, Paris, New York and Mumbai. Havas CX is a powerhouse of experts in every area of digital transformation and design, customer experience and customer engagement, e-Commerce and much more. In total, 250 brands – including both ‘Bricks &amp; Clicks’ brands (bricks-and-mortar retailers that have implemented digital transformation programmes) and Pure Players (digital natives, online-only) – were rated across each criterion, according to consumers’ perception of their importance to the overall customer experience. In India, 50 brands were studied under different categories such as Retail, Fashion/Sport, Financial Services, Automotive, Media/Tech, Hospitality, Fast Food and e-Retail. For Bricks &amp; Clicks brands, relevant and responsible communication alongside the pleasantness of the experience ranked as the most important factor. For Pure Players, quality of their customer service was the single most important factor. While pleasantness of experience did emerge as a discerning factor for Pure Players, it was less pronounced than it was for ‘Bricks &amp; Clicks’ brands. The study highlights that in India, the Customer-Brand Relation factor is the main driver of CX efficiency, with a conjunctural impact of Covid. In India, the top five X Index emerging categories are Automotive, Hospitality, Fashion, Finance and Quick Service Restaurants. Top 10 brands in India, according to rank are Apple, Tanishq, Morris Garages, Maruti, Michelin, Hyundai, Oberoi Hotels &amp; Resorts, Citroën, AirBnB and Marriott. Overall, the study, conducted by Havas CX in partnership with research institute OpinionWay, shines a light on the dual but contrasting needs of consumers who demand an almost Darwinist functional efficiency while simultaneously seeking an emotional connection from the brands they interact with (and buy from). It also uncovers a divide in consumer expectations of ‘Bricks &amp; Clicks’ brands versus digital Pure Players – with emotional needs ranking higher for the former and functionality for the latter. This underlines a clear opportunity for Pure Players – with functionality very much a given, the emotional can represent a clear differentiating factor. In total, 40 criteria were analysed across the key components of a customer journey: brand (i.e. ‘I completely trust the brand’, ‘I am loyal to the brand’), relationship (i.e. ‘quality of customer service’, ‘website and mobile app content is customised to customer needs’), purchase (i.e. ‘was seamless’, ‘was not intrusive’), product (i.e. ‘satisfaction with the quality of the services/products’, ‘satisfaction with the price of the services/products’) and, in light of the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic, response to COVID-19 (i.e. ‘adapted its shopping experience well’, ‘maintained relevant and responsible communication’). While the importance consumers place on efficiency and emotion stands out, effective CX is driven by a unique combination of certain factors in each market. Efficiency and Emotion most important factors in good CX: Havas Study

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image">Flickr/tracy the astonishing</div></div>We've heard it a million times: Men outnumber <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword>, technology, engineering, and <keyword id="6357038" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Math">math</keyword> (<keyword id="435553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="STEM">STEM</keyword>) fields.
But even though women have made progress in the past few decades, they still make up less than one quarter of the STEM workforce in the U.S., according to the most recent <a href="http://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/acs-24.pdf" target="_blank">U.S. Census Bureau report from 2011</a>.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/7-things-keeping-women-out-of-science-2013-10" target="_blank">There are many reasons that women drop out of STEM studies</a>, including everything from being called a nerd and not getting enough positive reinforcement, to other things like lack of childcare and the competitive nature of the field.
But a new study, conducted by Katie Van Loo and Robert Rydell from Indiana University, <a href="http://spp.sagepub.com/content/early/2013/10/28/1948550613511501.abstract" target="_blank">published Nov. 8 in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science</a>, provides additional evidence that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-nye-on-dancing-with-the-stars-is-bad-for-science-2013-9">stereotypes are holding women back</a>.
The researchers showed that women in a math setting often experience something called stereotype threat - when aware of the existence of a negative gender stereotype, in this case "men are better at math than women," women worry that their performance will confirm the stereotype.
When they worry about their performance, their actual performance drops.
The stereotype that men are better at math than women is so ingrained in our culture that women feel stereotype threat - and as a result, perform more poorly in math - just from watching a man take a dominant role in a math study group.
How the scientists figured this out. 
The study included 133 women and 101 men in college. Each participant watched a short scripted video with actors who were forming a study group - either a general study group or a math specific study group. Each video either had a dominant man, a dominant woman, or the interaction was neutral with no member of the group taking on a dominant role.
In each video the dominant actor had a more relaxed posture, used more expressive gestures, and gave commands like "you need to ..." to establish their authority.
After watching the video, the participants got 20 minutes to solve 30 GRE-level math problems. The women in the study who watched the male-dominant math video before answering the questions performed much worse than the women who watched the other videos (including the male-dominated general study group).

The researchers didn't see a significant drop in performance in math after the women watched a general study group video (even when a man took control of that group). That means it wasn't the subject of the study group that threatened them, but specifically a man taking control of the math group.
The men's math scores did not show any significant difference based on which video they watched.
After answering the math questions, the participants were asked how much they agreed with the statement: "I worry that my ability to perform well on math tests is affected by my gender."
Again, you can see how much impact the male-dominant video had on the answers to this question in the graph below. The threat-based concern measurement on the y-axis shows how much the female participants agreed that gender affects math performance.

They hope that encouraging more equal interactions between men and women, both in and out of the classroom, will help more women successfully enter STEM fields.

Just Watching A Man Run A Study Group Makes Women Worse At Math

Terrorist groups, such as <keyword id="44984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Al-Qaeda">Al-Qaeda</keyword>, have expanded their online presence with the help of social media platforms like <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword>, posing new challenges for the security agencies, a report released by the Woodrow Wilson Centre’s DC Commons Lab said. 
 
"All terrorist organisations are using many online platforms," said Gabriel Weimann, a professor of Communication and author of the report. "From the point of view of the terrorists, social media provides an important advantage of anonymity," he said. These social media platform are now used as tools for recruitment, propaganda, fundraising and imparting training on how to make a bomb. 
 
Back in 1998, only 12 terrorist-linked websites were present, but now the number has swelled to about 10,000, said Weimann. Moreover, they have even created forums and chat rooms, he added. 
 
Weimann said that the groups "never invented anything" online, but have misused the online freedom to create tools such as an online magazine <keyword id="6393492" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="inspire">Inspire</keyword>, which is used to recruit terrorists.

Even when African-American students "successfully complete the high school coursework intended to prepare them for college," <a href="http://www.act.org/newsroom/college-readiness-rates-lag-for-african-american-students-despite-taking-recommended-courses/">the report found</a>, they are still unlikely to meet these benchmarks."Compared to all students, African-American students are twice as likely to meet zero ACT College Readiness Benchmarks," the report states.From 2010-2014, English was the the most completed benchmark for African-American students, with 36% of students showing college readiness in the subject. By comparison, 19% of African-American students met the benchmark for reading, 15% for mathematics, and 11% for science.Just 5% of African-American students hit all four benchmarks, and 62% achieved none.Looking at students of all races over this period, 67% reached the benchmark for English, 47% for reading, 46% for mathematics, and 41% for science. New study shows one group of students is less prepared for college than their peers

Snap is releasing a product designed for allowing users to coordinate plans as a group, integrated into the platform's text chat. Announced at last week's Snap Partner Summit, <a href="https://minis.snapchat.com/">Snap Minis</a> offers a place on the platform for developers to create plug-ins that groups already using the platform for conversations can seamlessly access.Although the feature doesn't launch until later this year, Snap has teased the first set of Minis that will debut. Atom, a platform for movie tickets, developed a Mini for groups to pick out movies together and individually purchase tickets — once movie theaters open up, of course. There's also a Mini through which Snapchat's millions of teen users can share and compare their class schedules — assuming students will be attending school in-person.Once available, Snap Minis will be available right inside any chat with another user or group. London: Universities and student groups on Tuesday urgently lobbied British Prime Minister <keyword id="19906889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishi-Sunak" source="keywords">Rishi Sunak</keyword> to safeguard the country's <keyword id="21659184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="post-study-visa" source="keywords">post-study visa</keyword> offer, which has been dominated by Indians to gain work experience for around two years at the end of their university degree. Amid reports that Sunak is considering either restricting or ending the <keyword id="20616105" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Graduate-Route" source="keywords">Graduate Route</keyword> to curtail soaring migration statistics ahead of a general election, a group of nearly 30 university vice-chancellors and the <keyword id="21760521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-indian-students-and-alumni-association" source="keywords">National Indian Students and Alumni Association</keyword> (NISAU) UK have issued detailed letters of appeal to 10 Downing Street. They list a series of factors in favour of keeping the Graduate visa scheme unchanged, including the benefits that international students bring to the UK economy in a competitive global higher education marketplace. "Modelling by consultancy London Economics shows that a single cohort has a net economic benefit of GBP 37 billion to the UK economy; as well as through the soft power that Britain's international graduates generate for the country over time, including through furthering ties of trade and diplomacy," reads the NISAU UK letter addressed to Sunak. "Indeed, 70 per cent of <keyword id="19971660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-students" source="keywords">Indian students</keyword> have told us that the ability to gain meaningful work experience is a critical element in their decision to choose between competing international destinations, of which the UK is one... the Graduate Route allows the opportunity to gain this work experience for a temporary period. It is non-extendable and does not count towards permanent settlement. This means that neither students nor Graduate visa holders should be considered 'immigrants' in the context of the long-term picture of migration," it notes. Their appeal comes a week after the influential <keyword id="20609895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Migration-Advisory-Committee" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Migration Advisory Committee" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Migration Advisory Committee">Migration Advisory Committee</keyword> (MAC) advised the government to let the scheme continue as it found no abuse of this post-study work offer. It also confirmed that Indians topped its tally, accounting for 89,200 visas between 2021 and 2023, or 42 per cent of the overall grants, and were likely to be "most affected by any restriction on the Graduate Route". In their letter to Sunak, universities in the north of England — from Sunderland to Sheffield, Leeds to Lancaster, Liverpool to Teesside, Bradford to Huddersfield, and York to Newcastle — said they will all be harmed by the removal or reduction of this visa as it is an "intrinsic part of the educational offer that has made the UK so attractive to brilliant students from all around the world". "The Graduate Visa Route is regarded by students in key markets like India as an integral part of their educational experience. The MAC review made clear that the removal of this route would make the UK less attractive and thus would cause considerable financial detriment to universities around the country," reads their joint letter. "International student tuition fee income has long cross-subsidised underfunded research and has increasingly become critical to cross-subsidise the teaching of UK undergraduate students because of the frozen tuition fee. Universities cannot continue to absorb the costs of teaching UK undergraduates without some form of alternative funding source," they caution. On top of their visa fees, international students who find work and start businesses contribute billions of pounds in income tax, national insurance and VAT annually. The university chiefs point out that they are also usually net contributors to the National Health Service (NHS) through the NHS surcharge. The Russell Group of the UK's leading universities issued its appeal over the weekend, with CEO Tim Bradshaw warning that there has already been a 10 per cent decline in international applications for post-graduate courses starting this September in the wake of the clampdown on students being able to bring dependant family members. "A further restriction on international students would not only be unnecessary — as numbers are already falling — but also damaging, resulting in less spending in local communities, fewer opportunities for domestic students and less UK research," he noted in a letter to Sunak. Members of his own Cabinet are believed to be opposed to any changes to the Graduate scheme, but the British Prime Minister is having to balance pressures from the right of the governing Conservatives who are single-minded in their demands to curb all forms of legal as well as illegal migration levels ahead of an election later this year.

A new study analysing long-Covid among children and teenagers in the US has found that <keyword id="44308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="symptoms" source="Orion">symptoms</keyword> differed between the two groups. While children faced more brain and stomach-related problems, teenagers experienced fatigue, <keyword id="950054" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Physical-Pain" source="Orion">physical pain</keyword>, and loss of smell and taste. Moreover, long-Covid symptoms common in both adults and teens were more than those between teens and children, highlighting the importance of age groups-based COVID-19 research, according to the team of over 140 researchers that conducted the study. Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the study is part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s 'RECOVER' Initiative, aimed at understanding and preventing long-Covid, which refers to a set of persisting symptoms months after having COVID-19 <keyword id="6393040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infection" source="Orion">infection</keyword>. The researchers studied more than 5,300 children and adolescents, of whom about 3,860 -- - 751 children and 3109 adolescents -- had a history of the viral infection. Caregivers were surveyed for about 75 symptoms that occurred at least 90 days after an initial COVID-19 infection and lasted for at least a month. They were also enquired about their child's overall health and quality of life. Among children aged 6-11 years, the most common long <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid" source="Orion">COVID</keyword> symptoms were headache (57%), followed by trouble with memory/focusing, trouble sleeping (44 %) and stomach pain (43 %), the study found. Among the adolescents, about 80% had tiredness or low energy during the day, while physical pain in the body, muscles and joints affected 60% of them. Headaches persisted in 55% of the teens, while 47% of them continued to have trouble remembering or concentrating. While identifying groups of symptoms distinct to each age group, the researchers developed a long-Covid research index that indicates the likelihood of the condition in a child or a teenager. The index, separate for both age groups, included 18 prolonged symptoms that were more common in children and 17 common among teenagers. "The symptoms that make up the research index are not the only symptoms a child may have and they're not the most severe. But they are most predictive in determining who may have long COVID," said lead author of the study Rachel Gross, an associate professor in the departments of <keyword id="492850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paediatrics" source="Orion">Paediatrics</keyword> and Population Health at New York University. In the study group, 45% of the infected (338) and 33% of the uninfected children, along with 39% of the infected and 27 % of the uninfected adolescents reported having at least one prolonged symptom, the authors of the study said. Twenty-six symptoms among infected school-age children and 18 symptoms in infected adolescents persisted in at least 5% of the participants, they said.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Julian Finney/Getty Images</div></div></div><ul><li>A large study of more than 100,000 French adults revealed a startling link: People who consume more processed food are much more likely to develop all kinds of cancers.</li><li>Most of the ultra-processed products were foods and beverages with a lot of sugar.</li><li>The finding held true for every category of adults in the study: men and women, exercisers and couch potatoes, younger and older people, smokers and non-smokers.</li></ul> If scientists told you that there's one lifestyle factor that might best predict whether you get cancer, you'd want to know, right?Researchers in France may have found just that. After <a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/360/bmj.k322#T1">studying</a> more than 100,000 adults for years, their results showed that eating processed food is more closely linked with cancer risk than one's age, sex, body mass index, height, level of physical activity, smoking and drinking habits, calories consumed, or family history.This harmful "ultra-processed" food, as the researchers called it, may include packaged sweet pastries and muffins, chips, candy, sodas, frozen dinners like meatballs and fish sticks, instant ramen noodles, sugary cereals, and pretty much anything else you can imagine that's cheap and comes in a ready-to-go packet or container at the store.The researchers estimate this junk food accounts for 25%-50% of the total daily energy intake of people who live in rich, developed countries like the US, France, and Canada. <h2>The link between sugary, processed food and cancer</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Shutterstock</div></div></div>To find the link between processed food and cancer, researchers combed through, on average, five years of medical records and surveys of previously cancer-free adult patients.All the participants (a cohort of roughly 22% men and 78% women) agreed to fill out an online form detailing everything in their daily diet on about six days each year. Those surveys were meant to serve as comprehensive samples of what the study participants tended to eat in a single 24 hour period, with data from both weekdays and weekend diets.The researchers then compared that data to the participants' records in France's national health system database to find out who was getting cancer and what their eating plan looked like. The scientists noticed that participants who reported eating more ultra-processed, packaged foods tended to develop cancer more often than people who ate fresh stuff that was cooked at home or in restaurants. In fact, the study authors wrote that "a 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed foods in the diet was associated with significant increases of 12% in the risk of overall cancer, and 11% in the risk of breast cancer." On the other hand, French people who ate slightly less processed foods like canned goods, cheeses, and baguettes didn't tend to report higher instances of cancer. And healthy eaters who ate fresh, unprocessed foods like fish, rice, and veggies were found to have the lowest rates of cancer. <h2>We don't know that processed food is causing cancer, but there's a link in the data</h2>It's important to note that these results don't mean processed food is definitively causing cancer - the scientists simply found a worrisome trend in the data. But given the fact that the research controlled for factors like family history, age, sex, prescription birth control (in the case of breast cancer), body mass index, and education, it's hard to imagine what other factors might explain the bump in cancer rates among packaged-food eaters. It is well established that processed foods aren't good at keeping people full or providing them with the necessary fuel to get through the day without crashing. Packaged foods contain more sugar, fat, and salt than anything made in a home or restaurant kitchen, and also don't have nearly as much stomach-filling fiber and important nutrients.Sugar is likely the biggest diet culprit here: sweet drinks and blood-sugar-spiking snacks accounted for more than a quarter of the ultra-processed food that the people in the study ate. Other recent research has suggested that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cancer-sugar-tumor-growth-warburg-effect-2017-10">sugar may fuel tumor growth in people who already have cancer</a>.Some of the packaging that processed foods come in might also be cause for alarm. Materials in the plastic wrapping can include Bisphenol A (BPA), which can disrupt normal functioning of the endocrine system and lead to more birth defects and higher cancer rates. Packaged foods also include additives like sodium nitrite, which preserves meats but has also been shown to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12563346">cause cancer</a> in animal models.Scientists would never suggest that a link between data points is the same as a clear indication that one thing is the cause of another.
