All nine persons trapped after a huge fire at an underground hydroelectric power station in Telangana were killed, officials said on Friday. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao ordered a probe by the CID into the fire. Following the chief minister's direction, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar issued an order appointing CID Additional Director General of Police Govind Singh as the inquiry officer. Singh was asked to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and submit the report to the chief minister. The Chief Minister expressed his deep shock over the fire incident and termed it as "very unfortunate". According to a statement from Chief Minister's Office, he voiced his sorrow over the efforts to rescue the trapped people failing to yield results. All the efforts by rescue workers to save the trapped employees at Telangana State Generation Corporation (<keyword id="2546063" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TS-GENCO">TS Genco</keyword>) plant at <keyword id="240543" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srisailam">Srisailam</keyword> canal's left bank in Nagarkurnool district were futile. The rescue workers recovered the bodies of five victims. They were identified as Assistant Engineers Mohan Kumar, Uzma Fatima, and Sunder, Divisional Engineer Srinivas Goud and Mahesh, an employee of a battery company. Efforts were on to trace the bodies of the remaining persons. The rescue personnel including those from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were battling thick smoke to retrieve the bodies. Some rescue workers have also reportedly become ill during the rescue operation. Earlier, personnel from the NDRF and experts from the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) joined the rescue operations. The fire, which broke late on Thursday, was brought under control by the firefighters. A short-circuit is believed to have caused the fire at unit one of the underground power house. Of the 30 persons reported to be present at the spot, 15 escaped to safety through a tunnel while six were rescued by rescue personnel. They were admitted to a local hospital. One of the survivors said the sparks were first noticed on a panel. "This was followed by series of explosions. There were utter chaos and we all ran out for safety," he said. Telangana Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy and TS Genco and Transco Chairman and Managing Director Prabhakar Rao rushed to the spot and were overseeing rescue efforts. Reddy said that the accident occurred in the first unit of the power station and four panels were damaged. He said that rescue personnel were unable to enter the tunnel due to thick smoke. "As soon as the fire started, they tried to trip the units but that couldn't happen. So we isolated the 400 KV input and all units were tripped," said Prabhakar Rao. Operations at the power station have been suspended following the incident. The Srisailam dam is located across the Krishna river which serves as the border between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Standing paddy crop in over 2,385 hectares was inundated in the district while cotton in 225 ha and horticulture crops in over 5,000 ha were also affected. Full-scale enumeration of the damage would be undertaken after the flood recedes. In the neighbouring West Godavari, 55 villages under three mandals were still facing the flood fury. Vasishta Godavari, a tributary of the perennial river, was in spate, cutting off road communication network. Nine relief camps were continuing in the district where about 2,000 people were provided shelter after they were evacuated from the flood-affected villages, according to a Joint Collector. On river Krishna, the Srisailam reservoir received an inflow of 2.81 lakh cusecs on Tuesday morning of which 63,947 cusecs was discharged downstream. Nagarjuna Sagar received 40,259 cusecs and Pulichintala 27,322 cusecs but discharges from these two projects have not yet begun as they still have a large flood cushion. Flood discharge from Muniyeru rivulet also dropped on Tuesday to about 70,000 cusecs. Though the Prakasam Barrage downstream at Vijayawada received an inflow of 1.29 lakh cusecs, only 1.08 lakh cusecs was being let out into the sea. Flood situation in Godavari river eases but tens of villages in Andhra Pradesh remains inundated

A special court will deliver its verdict in <keyword id="74971" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satyam-fraud-case">Satyam fraud case</keyword> on March 9, 2015. Special <keyword id="2655311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Judge-BVLN-Chakravarthi">Judge BVLN Chakravarthi</keyword> deferred the judgment, owing “voluminous documents.” 
 
“You know the volume of the case…it requires some more time (to study). You may be satisfied or not (with the outcome), but I must satisfy myself (before coming to a conclusion). Typing of the judgement itself needs 2-3 weeks,” the judge said. 
 
Satyam Computers founder and erstwhile chairman B Ramalinga Raju, his brother and the company’s former managing director B Rama Raju and former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas were present in the court during the hearing. 
 
The others accused in the case are: former PwC auditors Subramani Gopalakrishnan and T Srinivas, Raju’s another brother B Suryanarayana Raju, former employees G Ramakrishna, D Venkatpathi Raju and CH Srisailam, and Satyam’s former internal chief auditor VS Prabhakar Gupta. 
 Raju was arrested by the <keyword id="6451278" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Crime-Investigation-Department">Crime Investigation Department</keyword>, Andhra Pradesh police, after he confessed to the fraud.

Verdict In Satyam Case To Be Delivered On March 9

A special <keyword id="6362306" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CBI-court">CBI court</keyword> on Thursday held <keyword id="10958" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Satyam">Satyam</keyword> founder and <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> B <keyword id="41263" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ramalinga-Raju">Ramalinga Raju</keyword> guilty in the multi-crore accounting fraud, sentencing him to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore on Raju. 
 
Raju who has already spent over 30 months in jail had urged the court to be lenient with the sentencing, citing health grounds. 
 
The scam surfaced in January, 2009, after Raju, Satyam's then chairman, allegedly confessed to manipulating his company's account books and inflating profits over many years. Around 3,000 documents were marked and 226 witnesses examined during the trial that began nearly six years ago.

While the CBI accused Raju and the others of cheating, breach of trust by way of inflating invoices and incomes in the first and third charge sheets, the second one dealt with the accused allegedly falsifying returns through violation of various IT laws. 
During the trial, the CBI alleged that the scam caused a loss of Rs 14,000 crore to shareholders of Satyam. 
 In January last year, Ramalinga Raju's wife <keyword id="2799808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nandini-Raju-and-sons">Nandini Raju and sons</keyword> <keyword id="158777" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Teja-Raju">Teja Raju</keyword> and Rama Raju were among 21 relatives of the ex-Satyam boss who were convicted by a <keyword id="2107210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="special-court-for-economic-offences">Special Court for Economic Offences</keyword> here for default in Income Tax payment.

The court will pronounce the sentence on Friday. 
 
Touted as the country's biggest accounting fraud, the scam had come to light on January 7, 2009, after the firm's founder and then Chairman B Ramalinga Raju allegedly confessed to manipulating his company's account books and inflating profits over many years to the tune of crores of rupees. 
 Raju was arrested by <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> Police's <keyword id="6451278" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Crime-Investigation-Department">Crime Investigation Department</keyword> two days later after he allegedly confessed to the fraud, along with his brother Rama Raju and others.

The first two charge sheets dealt with the account fudging by Raju with the assistance of nine others, while the third charge sherelates to "violation" of various Income Tax rules. 
 
While the CBI accused Raju and the others of cheating, breach of trust by way of inflating invoices and incomes in the first and third charge sheets, the second one dealt with the accused allegedly falsifying returns through violation of various IT laws. 
 
During the trial, the CBI alleged that the scam caused a loss of Rs 14,000 crore to shareholders of Satyam, while the defence countered the charges saying the accused were not responsible for the fraud and all the documents filed by the central agency relating to the case were fabricated and not according to the law. 
 The <keyword id="6357808" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Enforcement-Directorate">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> had also filed a charge sheet against them under Prevention of <keyword id="6355008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="money-laundering">Money Laundering</keyword> Act.
