<ul><li><keyword id="541988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapdeal" source="Orion">Snapdeal</keyword>’s IPO consists of a fresh issue of ₹1,250 crore.</li><li>The company plans to set up offline centers through offline stores and new franchises.</li><li>It also wants to invest and set up new Power Brands, which is owned by the company but manufactured by someone else.</li></ul>Indian ecommerce giant Snapdeal is now looking to set up offline distribution network, the company revealed in its preliminary paperwork for its initial public offering (IPO). Snapdeal’s IPO consists of fresh issue of ₹1,250 crore and offer for sale of over 3 crore equity shares. The company, in the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), has highlighted that “a successful value ecommerce player with an omni-channel presence will be able to capture shoppers’ mindshare across both online and offline channels.” Value ecommerce brands are companies that offer affordable products. Snapdeal already competes with online-only players the likes of Amazon and Flipkart, but it will enter into competition with offline value retailers like V Mart, Future Retail and D Mart. <div type="image" title="Snapdeal IPO papers reveal the e-tailer’s offline aspirations for budget fashion" msid="88408070" hostid="261"></div> As a part of its expansion plan, the company will create distribution channels through offline stores, existing neighbourhood stores as well as new franchises. This will help the company increase the customer’s trust in the brand and allow them to try the product before purchase. According to a Redseer report, the majority of India’s overall value lifestyle retail segment sales happen offline and most of it is unorganised and unbranded. The top 15 offline retailers had a combined annual revenue of approximately $5.5 billion in the fiscal year 2020, which accounted for less than 6% of the overall value lifestyle retail market. “The market is very fragmented, with the top retailers accounting for only a fraction of the overall market,” the management consultancy firm noted, highlighting that there is a large headroom for revenue growth in this segment. Snapdeal, while citing the RedSeer report, also noted that they would not have to worry about delivery reliability, return experience, shipping costs and user interface in the offline value distribution. Snapdeal also wants to invest and set up new Power Brands, where the company owns the intellectual property of the brand but licences to third-party sellers for manufacturing. It already has 13 such power brands, including mens grooming brand MoochWale, watches brand David Miller, healthcare brand 9+ lives. The allotment status of HP Adhesives will be announced today — here’s how you can check it

<ul><li><keyword id="35621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="Orion">E-commerce</keyword> platform <keyword id="541988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapdeal" source="Orion">Snapdeal</keyword> made its debut on the government-led <keyword id="3415669" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="open-network" source="Orion">Open Network</keyword> for Digital Commerce (<keyword id="5862596" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ondc" source="Orion">ONDC</keyword>) on July 19. </li><li>An initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), <keyword id="14523575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ondc-aims" source="Orion">ONDC aims</keyword> to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and small traders and help them get on to online platforms. </li><li>ONDC is a UPI of e-commerce that seeks to democratize virtual commerce, shifting it from a platform-centric model to an open-network.</li></ul>With the launch of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the Indian government brought all virtual banking and payments under one roof. The government is now pulling off a similar feat in yet another walled garden, the e-commerce category, with the launch of Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). ONDC aims to democratize virtual commerce by bringing all platforms under one open network. It would create a new, equal-level playing field for the e-commerce landscape, which is currently dominated by international players Amazon and Flipkart. Open Network goes beyond the current platform-centric model where the buyer and seller must be part of the same platform/ application to enable transactions between them. By moving away from platform-centric models to an open network, ONDC intends to stop digital monopolies. Currently, Amazon and Flipkart have end-to-end control over the entire e-commerce ecosystem which includes seller onboarding, customer acquisition, order fulfillment, payment, returns and complaint redressal. Imagine a platform that not only shows products from Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho under one umbrella, but also from all your local kirana stores. That’s exactly what the open network intends to do. You would be able to compare the prices of Amazon finds and product specifications of Flipkart finds through one application. Courtesy: ONDC, Ministry of Commerce It will unbundle the supply chain, shifting the power from the likes of Amazon and Flipkart to consumers, merchants, and providers of support services. With an open network, smaller players will also have access to Amazon or Flipkart controlled data. ONDC, therefore, aims to support MSMEs and small traders and help them get on online platforms. Snapdeal is the first e-commerce platform to get on the open network. E-comm platforms Dunzo and Ekart have also partnered with ONDC. How does ONDC work? Not only will the open network enable smoother transactions and online buying experience for consumers, it would also digitize the entire value chain and improve efficiencies in logistics for sellers. Small merchants will be able to skip separate lists of mandates and commissions for every platform they join. With ONDC, retailers will have access to processes and technologies that are deployed by e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Flipkart. It would also mean better discoverability for all retailers and enhance transparency in pricing. Silos will be broken down and an open list with delivery partners, aggregators, customers, restaurants, and logistic providers will be put together. According to the government, “ONDC will ensure confidentiality and privacy of data in the network. ONDC shall not mandate sharing of any transaction-level data by participants with ONDC. Will work with its participants to publish anonymized aggregate metrics on network performance without compromising on confidentiality and privacy.” When was ONDC announced? An initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), ONDC would enable both sellers and buyers to be digitally visible and transact through an open network, regardless of what platform or application they use. The initiative was announced by a nine-member advisory council that included Infosys co-founder and chairman Nandan Nilekani, National Health Authority CEO R S Sharma, QCI Chairman Adil Zainulbhai, National Payments Corporation of India CEO Dilip Asbe and others. As per DPIIT, ONDC “...aims at promoting open networks developed on open-sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols, independent on any specific platform. ONDC is expected to digitize the entire value chain, standardize operations, promote inclusion of suppliers, derive efficiency in logistics, and enhance value for consumers.” The open network is not just for retail transactions, it is also for food, delivery, travel, hotel booking, and more, which would potentially challenge the dominance of all large e-commerce players. As more small traders and retailers accept the online world, ONDC plans to increase e-commerce <a href="https://www.medianama.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/ONDCStrategyPaper.pdf">penetration </a>to 25% of all consumer purchases in the next two years, up from about 8% presently. Within the next five years, it expects to sign up 900 million buyers and 1.2 million sellers on the shared network, with a gross merchandise value of $48 billion. Snapdeal is now available on ONDC, here’s all you need to know about the network

Indian e-commerce is booming and grocery is the hottest segment within that. While everyone from Amazon and JioMart to DMart and Grofers use discounts as the primary luure, a recent research report says that BigBasket is leading the pack despite offering lesser discounts compared to most other players. This would be music to the ears of executives at the Tata Group, which bought BigBasket in May 2021 for an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/startups/tata-says-acquired-a-majority-stake-in-online-grocery-bigbasket/articleshow/83029366.cms">undisclosed amount</a>, with the goal of adding it to its up and coming super app Tata Neu. According to the report, BigBasket has about 9 million monthly active users, compared to JioMart and DMart’s 5 million each. Though the company has a discount rate of about 14%. JioMart and DMart, on the other hand, offer discounts at a good 17-18%. DMart and JioMart are offering deep discounts to catch up with BigBasket

<ul><li>Snapdeal added 6 million new buyers on its platform during the pandemic.</li><li>Its recent 5-day sale kicked-off on October 16 and ended on October 20. </li><li>Rajnish Wahi, Senior Vice President, Snapdeal tells us some of the trends the platform saw during its pre-Diwali sale, its plan to go deeper into Bharat and USPs that helped it stand out in the clutter of online sales. </li></ul>Indian consumers have always been value-conscious, who take pride in their haggling skills and with the pandemic, buyers are expecting greater value for their spends. Therefore, e-commerce player Snapdeal’s sale, which took place between October 16 to 20, focused on offering ‘Kum Mein Dum Diwali,’ i.e., value deals for lesser money. According to Snapdeal, less than 5% percent of retail is online and during this on-going <keyword id="36208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season">festive season</keyword>, the platform’s aim is to bring more users online and give them strong reasons to switch. Snapdeal observed that consumers weren’t willing to buy premium brands this year and wanted to access the online platforms in their regional language. So, as other e-commerce platforms offered premium brands at a discounted price, Snapdeal wanted to make online shopping more inclusive for buyers across India. It focused more on non-metro cities, which is a market with potential 400 million users and shipped orders to rural places like Palasner in Maharashtra, Abdasa in Gujarat, Kalsi in Uttarakhand, Chitkul in Himachal among many others. Ahead of the sale, Snapdeal added 1300 new pin codes to go deeper into Bharat, areas which were previously unserviceable or where users were compelled to travel to nearby towns to collect their orders. It also updated its user interface by adding eight languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Marathi. As a result, 70% of its orders were received by sellers located beyond the top 5 metropolitan areas of the country and 90% of its orders were placed from non-metro cities. We caught up with Rajnish Wahi, Senior Vice President, Snapdeal to further understand some of trends that the platform saw during its sale. Excerpts: Q. The role of engagement and communication has never been more important, especially in today’s digital-first world. How are you making sure your communication during this year's sale is relevant to consumers? Snapdeal is sharply focused on catering to the value-conscious consumers, who see e-commerce as the connecting link between their aspirations, access and affordability. Our theme for this year’s festive sale - “Kum Mein Dum Diwali '' clearly communicates our core message - your shopping rupee has more value this year. As part of our sale preparations, we had conducted a survey of nearly 1.25 Lakh users and one of the key insights was user unwillingness to pay for brand premiums this year and instead focus on the functional value of their purchases. Based on these inputs, the festive assortment was expanded in a focused manner by on-boarding additional sellers for popular products like kitchen appliances, kitchenware, bed linen, apparel, footwear and fashion accessories like watches, wallets, etc. Shaping our sale offers around the clearly-stated expectations of our customers and conveying the same unambiguously through our festive promotions and digital marketing is the sum and substance of our festive communication. Q. This year is different. People have been observed to be judicious in spending. How has the consumer sentiment improved? While 2020 has been a volatile year, we see that there are many tailwinds that are propelling our business. The pandemic has resulted in redistribution of demand between offline and online channels, with online gaining share due to its inherent advantages of reach, convenience, large assortment and safety of buying from home. It has also accelerated the familiarity and acceptance of e-commerce amongst new buyers. With the pandemic, consumers have become more price conscious and are likely to opt for lesser-priced products, while not compromising on their quality expectations. Given all of this, we have seen two sets of buyers come on Snapdeal - one which is trading up to a better assortment and one that is trading down and opting for better functional value instead of big brands. In fact, we have added 6 million new buyers on our platform in the pandemic. We are witnessing the return of enthusiasm for festivities and it is also apparent that online channels will be a preferred medium for a larger number of buyers this year. But it will also be different this year, as more people will be price conscious and will look to spend on quality products that suit their price sensibilities. In a way, Snapdeal’s “Kum Me Dum” focus is about “offering more choices at price points better than last year”, especially for popular categories like home &amp; fashion, which has been made possible by year-long focus on expanding our value selection. Q. With the on-going festive season, many other platforms will have their Sales days too. How do you then cut the clutter and make sure you win consumers? How will you be different from the other players in the segment? Snapdeal is synonymous with value e-commerce. While others in the industry are now starting to build a value segment, we at Snapdeal have been focused on “only value” for the last three years. While other platforms are making efforts to sell branded items at discounted prices, these are still not affordable for a majority of the buyers in the country. On the other hand, we are focussed on bringing the depth and diversity of India's bazaars &amp; markets to the doorsteps of our users. On Snapdeal, buyers find endless varieties of regional and local brands that not only serve their needs, but also offer immense value at affordable prices. The result of our “Kum Mein Dum” Diwali sale bears testimony to this - more than 80% of Snapdeal’s Diwali shoppers chose to buy regional &amp; local brands on Snapdeal. The strong growth of lesser-known brands relative to national/international brands has been because of two key reasons: increased choice and a substantial price difference. Our value-focused positioning runs consistently through our selection and communication and is one the reasons why 90% of our orders flow from non-metros cities and towns across the country. Q. What are some of the other trends you are expecting to see this festive? Our first sales results are out and are reflective of how close the lives of users revolve around their homes. The sale in the home products category has grown by 30% over last year and has become the largest category on Snapdeal this year, overtaking the fashion category, which has traditionally been the top-performer at Snapdeal. The growth in the home category is propelled by popular products like kitchen appliances, kitchenware, bed &amp; bath,decor,cleaning equipment, lighting and comforters &amp; blankets etc. This growth in the fitness category reflects the extra time that people have on their hands and also underscores heightened awareness about personal health &amp; fitness. This category has grown by 45% over last year led by gym essentials like tummy trimmers, push-up bars, wrist supports, fitness gloves, hand grip strengtheners etc. Users buying sports equipment like badminton racquets &amp; cricket sets and weighing machines are also strong consumer trends. While the fashion category has also grown from previous years in terms of shipped units, the growth is less than other higher-performing categories. In the fashion category, there is an increased spending on kidswear in the festive season. . Among popular picks in Snapdeal’s Diwali sale are men’s &amp; women’s grooming products, nutritional supplements, religious items (prayer books, temples accessories etc). With the deterioration of air quality in North India, the sale of N95 masks, air-purifier filters, anti-pollution skincare items, skin moisturisers, lip balms has also increased. Snapdeal also witnessed an increase in gifting via e-commerce early in this festive season. The range of festivals starting with Karva Chauth and followed by Dhanteras, Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj and Chhath Puja have become important gifting occasions for users in various parts of the country. While in the previous years, shoppers used e-commerce channels to buy and ship to families &amp; friends in other cities, this year many shoppers in metro cities are also sending gifts to people living in the same cities. This year gift cards have also been hugely popular among people to send to their friends and family, with a 3X surge in orders as compared to the festive sale last year. These included gift cards of travel, entertainment, food and retail brands which were upto 30% off. Q. How are you working towards improving the overall consumer experience? E-Commerce in India has grown beyond the first 100 Mn largely urban, English-speaking users. A market of potentially 400 Mn users is now emerging across India’s smaller non-metro cities. This is a very diverse cohort in terms of languages spoken, literacy levels, frequency of online purchases and familiarity with technology. A large part of Snapdeal’s existing user base and new users come from this cohort and all our focus and efforts are on building the right experience that our users want. That means we work tirelessly to give them a wide array of products to choose from, and at just the right prices they are looking to spend. We also make it easy in many other ways for users to buy on Snapdeal. This includes providing interfaces on our app &amp; m-site in eight Indian languages, so that they can browse through products &amp; transact in a language of their choice. We also enable conversation with our customer service agents in multiple Indian languages. Transaction and promotional messages all are available in many Indian languages. Some other ways, in which we support our users to buy is by helping them make well-informed choices through short 10-second product videos which are far more captivating and help buyers to make decisions faster than static pictures of the products concerned, easy 7-days return, no questions asked refunds policy. We are the only platform that provides uninterrupted access to cash-on-delivery option even during the turbulent early days of pandemic lockdowns. Q. Which are your strongest markets currently? How are you planning to strengthen your presence in other markets? We have a strong pan India presence. During the current sale and consistent with Snapdeal’s positioning, more than 90% of Snapdeal’s orders were placed from non-metro cities. What are your current MAUs? More than 70 million users visit Snapdeal every month to browse and buy from our vast catalogue of 220 million plus listings. Q. What kind of target have you set for this year's sale? Do you anticipate people to buy more, considering a lot of people might have pushed buying things for the festive season? What kind of numbers do you aim to reach this year? Less than five percent of retail is online, which is an incredibly small penetration number. In our view, Diwali or not, our job to bring more buying options for our users doesn’t change. Diwali does serve as a milestone to accelerate some of our related initiatives or build virtual infrastructure to connect the dots between demand and supply in our country. This year, ahead of the festive season, we on-boarded additional sellers of popular products like kitchen appliances, kitchenware, bed linen, apparel, footwear and fashion accessories like watches, wallets, etc., as indicated by our users in a survey. In the run-up to Diwali, Snapdeal also on-boarded 5000 manufacturer-sellers who sell products like water purifiers, choppers &amp; blenders, steel &amp; copper utensils, crockery items, bedsheets, quilts, geysers, etc directly from their manufacturing units. Why Snapdeal targeted non-metro cities and rural India during its pre-Diwali sale

Nasdaq-listed Amazon’s shares fell by 5.38% and Walmart’s stock lost 2.06% on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Together, the damage was worth over $50 billion in the market value two stocks. The fact that Amazon's growth is broadly slowing - though still growing - speaks to how incremental e-commerce growth is becoming "somewhat more difficult and expensive," Morgan Stanley analysts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-is-about-to-look-cheap-Analysts-are-doubling-down-on-their-bullish-calls-even-as-the-companys-growth-slows/articleshow/67798248.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">said</a>. In other words, the margin of profit on every penny of additional revenue may be smaller than it is now. One of the fears on Wall Street is that both companies Amazon and Walmart, which bought the Indian e-tail major Flipkart in 2018, will lose business in one of the world's largest consumer markets, India. The Narendra Modi government changed the rules in <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-ecommerce/india-tightens-e-commerce-rules-likely-to-hit-amazon-flipkart-idINKCN1OQ09D" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">December 2018 </a>for foreign players in India's online marketplace, curbing them from offering consumers ‘deep discounts’ or sell their own brands through their respective platforms. In the three months ending December 2018, the growth in Amazon's revenue from markets outside the US nearly halved to 15% compared to the same time last year. The new rules in India could further eat into Amazon's profit. India changed its policy after complaints from India's small traders who fear that the American giants could squeeze out the small corner shops and dominate Indian retail. India's home-grown retailers accused Amazon and Walmart of unfair bias towards affiliate vendors and predatory pricing. It is likely to be India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/e-commerce-wars-amazons-jeff-bezos-vs-mukesh-ambani-in-india/articleshow/67620116.cms">largest retail chain operator</a> Reliance Retail, owned by Mukesh Ambani — the richest man, not only in India, but in Asia. It is to be seen how Donald Tump's White House reacts to the change in policy in India that hurts two America's marquee companies. In a world where are shopping less almost everyday, a market like India with a population of over a billion is an attractive spot. The sale on Amazon and Walmart stocks in US may worsen as new India's e-commerce rules kick in

In a bid to expand its presence, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> is mulling to tie up online e-tailers such as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and Snapdeal to sell its 4G Lyf smartphones. 
 Reliance has already tied up with <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> for its one handset and is exploring other options to launch an online store at these marketplaces. 
 
Reliance group's Lyf-branded 4G handsets had become the fifth-largest selling smartphone in India in the first quarter of its launch. 
 
Looking at the market trend and the fact that many people are buying phones online now, Reliance wants to attract youngsters. 
 
"The response has been good and the company wants to expand the online sales network since each handset sold will create a customer for the 4G services when it's launched," one of the executives told ET. 
 
Apparently, Reliance is not entering into any pricing war of smartphones. 
 Lyf garnered 7% share in the January-March quarter and was the second largest after <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> in the 4G or LTE category, stated Counterpoint Research.

Reliance is looking to sell Lyf smartphone on Flipkart, Snapdeal to connect more with young buyers

In a bid to achieve greater price parity in online and offline trading of smartphones, rivals Samsung and Apple have come out with first-of-its-kind concrete steps, which will also stress on the importance of online retailing for both of them. 
 In the new move, Samsung has tied up with Amazon and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> to set up a ‘brand store’ on their websites. Under this, only authorised sellers would be able to offer the product at prices fixed by the Korean company. This will prevent any lucrative discounts. 
 
As per the senior executives with the cellphone trade, now unauthorised sellers won't be able to offer Samsung products on these websites. 
 Snapdeal refused to comment on the association with Samsung. An <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> spokesperson told Economic Times the Samsung store is a brand experience page and merchandising initiative whereby it showcases the breadth of Samsung's selection. "Through such initiatives, we partner with brands to engage with their and our customers," the spokesperson said. 
 
Meanwhile, Apple has now decided to allow retailers to buy its products from any of its four distributors-Ingram Micro, Redington, Rashi Peripherals and Brightstar-which earlier was not the case. 
 The move came after offline retailers complained that online sellers were getting phones from Apple's designated distributors at lower prices. Now, <keyword id="481409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple-India">Apple India</keyword> has informed its offline retailers that they are free to negotiate margins with distributors and can sell the products at a lower price, matching online if they want. 
 
"Even though all such communication by Apple India officials to retailers is done verbally, the big chains are already buying from distributors who offer best price," one of the executives told Economic Times. 
 
As per market tracker Counterpoint Research senior analyst Tarun Pathak, these were the first steps initiated by Apple and Samsung to tap eCommerce market in the country by working on traditional distribution lines. 
 
"Both the brands were losing sales to online-only smartphone brands at a time when e-Commerce already contributes 15% of smartphone sales in India and expected to double this year," Pathak told the financial daily. 
 
As per ET, some 115 million smartphones are expected to be sold in India in 2015. 
 
As per Chief Executive Officer of a leading mobilephone retal chain, Apple has adopted a push-back mechanism to sway offline retailers which complained about pricing disparity with ecommerce, adding that through this Apple signalled that the company was serious about not curbing online sales in any way. 
 
"Apple is not that fussy about online discounting in India as it used to be," he said. 
 
Coming to Samsung's initiative, another senior executive with an electronics chain said after blacklisting online sellers that were not maintaining pricing of the products, Samsung’s latest move will allow it to tap online shoppers without disturbing offline retailers and also give a legitimate stamp to handsets sold through Amazon and Snapdeal. 
 
Industry officials informed ET that the Korean company was also in talks with Flipkart to set up a similar online brand store and may include other eCommerce firms too. 
 A <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> spokesperson said all channel partners contribute to its market share growth and the company regularly monitors developments in both the online and offline retail spaces.

Great discounts for Apple and Samsung products could be a thing of the past now!

<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, the poster child of the Indian startup ecosystem, was devalued for the seventh time in January 2017, by <keyword id="4205639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fidelity-partners">Fidelity Partners</keyword>. At a $5.56 billion valuation, Flipkart’s shares were valued at $52.13 in November 2016, down by 36.1 percent from $81.55 per share as of August 2016. The domino effect hit the cab aggregator <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> next with the US-based investment firm <keyword id="4205636" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vanguard-world-fund">Vanguard World Fund</keyword> marking down Ola by over 40 percent. 
 According to their regulatory filing with the <keyword id="108474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Securities-and-Exchange-Commission">US Securities and Exchange Commission</keyword>, the current valuation for Ola is now $3 billion, with its shares dropping from $311.27 per share in the previous quarter to $182.70 apiece. During their peak, Ola had raised $500 million at a valuation of $5 billion. 
 That’s not all. According to reports, e-commerce giant <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> is reportedly looking at raising funds at a lower valuation of $4 billion. At their last fundraising round, they raised $200 million at a valuation of $6.5 billion. 
 
Valuations are normally decided according to a company’s market share, its gross margins, and its rate of growth, among other factors, but is anyone talking about the elephant in the room? Does a number decide a company’s worth or does the mettle lie someplace else? 
 
What’s The Big Deal about Valuations? 
 
While Valuations and devaluations are part of the game, they are a mix of market environment, risk appetite, a fund manager’s biases, hot new trends, fear of missing out, the multiples comparable are commanding, and of course, expected cash flows and margins. 
In 2015, we lauded the entry of Flipkart, Ola and Snapdeal in the Unicorn club. The first quarter of 2015 saw over $1.7 billion funding in start-ups and all we hear now are downturns with reality hitting the magic creatures to the ground and forcing them to compete in a horse race for fund-raising.

While there were muffled concerns of profitability and unit economics, the dynamics took a harder turn when in the middle of 2016 the world economic dynamics shifted. 
 
Suddenly, the pouring funding started slowing down, news of firing rounds, internal tiffs, and investor involvement began to cloud the startup skyline. 
 
Now the lauded valuations started to seem bloated and overhyped, and the cost-cutting started and it doesn’t seem to end. 
 
 
 
 
The secret is in the Business Model 
 <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>, while digging deeper into factors ailing the startup ecosystem in India, realized that business models had to be one of the core ingredients to a startup’s success or failure. So, we got in touch with key players, notable investors and successful companies that had a say in the functions of the industry. 
 
What clearly emerged was that there were mainly three business models that most start-ups and unicorns, followed in India- 
 
1) Cut prices to gain industry share and chase profit later 
2) Set up person-to-person exchanges 
3) On-Demand Model 
 
Now we break down the models to see why Indian start-ups think they’d work and why they haven’t succeeded yet. 
 
Investors’ Point of View 
 <keyword id="262067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahesh-Murthy">Mahesh Murthy</keyword>, Co-Partner, Seedfund, one of India’s most vocal investors told us what’s wrong with the Indian startup ecosystem,”The problem is that we are idolizing businesses that are not ‘New’. There is nothing elusive or different about the companies we look up to, they are just copycats.’’ 
 Seedfund, which is an early stage VC firm has invested in companies like Redbus.in, Chumbak, Carwale, and Voonik. “Real businesses need little or no marketing. The cost of acquiring a customer shouldn’t be higher than your investment in your product which is what is happening right now’’<keyword id="20148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="murthy">Murthy</keyword> comments on the viability of the business models of India’s best-known <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>. 
 “Innovation for the sake of innovation is useless. Most consumers prefer the companies that are competitors to Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Ola and that speaks volumes. We are just looking for great service coupled with great value for money and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and Uber give us that while the other companies don’t hit the mark while getting celebrity endorsements with full-page ads.’’ 
 “Rule Number 1 of business: Never lose money. Rule Number 2: Don’t forget Rule Number 1,” said <keyword id="71133" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Warren-Buffet">Warren Buffet</keyword>, probably the most popular investor in the world. 
 <keyword id="542474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reid-Hoffman">Reid Hoffman</keyword> from <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword> and now a VC says that as a VC, you should be able to put your money into a startup and walk away from your investment and at the most, you are best placed to understand a sector if you have built a business in it or at the very least, worked in it. For Indian start-ups, we see the opposite happening with Flipkart who recently appointed <keyword id="6379357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalyan-Krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> as CEO, who is an ex-employee at Flipkart’s key investor, Tiger Global. 
 
What is a business model? 
 
A business model explains which consumer pain a startup chooses to relieve, why your solution works better than competing ones and how big a wedge a company can drive between what customers are willing to pay and the costs. 
 
Breaking down the Business Models 
 
There are broadly the following business models at play when it comes to start-ups that hold the public eye in India: 
 
1. Cut prices to gain an industry share and chase profit later: Target a huge market and sell a product at the lowest price with fast delivery and great service. As the company grows, expand the product line, negotiate volume discounts with suppliers, invest in technology, customer response time and cut waste from the operations. Then deliver the lower costs to customers in the form of lower prices. 
 
This was Amazon’s model which is still one of the fastest growing companies in India and the world. Although it was founded back in 1994, Amazon didn’t actually make a profit until 2001. Amazon has some profitable projects, but the money made from them is typically used as investments to fund other Amazon businesses and ventures. The company invests its profits in new lines of businesses and uses them to expand. In short, Amazon seems to value growth over profits. 
 
 
 
​ <keyword id="8589" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="padmaja">Padmaja</keyword> <keyword id="980938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ruparel">Ruparel</keyword>, President, Indian Angel Network doesn’t believe in this model simply because she thinks that Indian consumers are flighty, “There is a constant need to lure the consumer to stick with you which is tricky when you’re not the only player in the market. Your focus here is on how quickly you can grow the market and not on your business strategy.’’ Ruparel believes in investing in a much more stable business model, “We are old-fashioned for sure as our focus is on businesses building a top-line and a bottom-line. We ascertain a business by unit economics and even though the cycle might be slightly longer, B2B start-ups create a sustainable business.” 
 
“The consumer is surely attuned to buying online which was their aim, but only some players will remain in this market. Consolidation is inevitable as loss-making businesses can’t stay afloat for long, but only time will tell who will remain the top dogs here,’’says Padmaja when asked about the future for consumer-centric start-ups. 
 
India’s perspective: “E-commerce companies like Snapdeal and Flipkart are following a similar model to that of Amazon in India. The difference is that Amazon can afford to lose money in India as it is profitable in other markets. The former players are just playing in India where they’re losing money trying to compete with Amazon,” comments Mahesh Murthy. 
 
2. Set up person-to-person exchanges: A house owner in a town has a huge house that has idle rooms that aren’t occupied. The young professionals living in the city need accommodation in different towns to work flexibly but they don’t want to own a house or live in expensive hotels. It seems to be working for <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword> which doesn’t own any inventory and millions of people have taken advantage of these services, and Airbnb now has a market value estimated at $30 billion—roughly the same size as the <keyword id="183920" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marriott-International">Marriott International</keyword> hotel chain. 
 
Vikram Gupta, CEO, IvyCap Ventures, “India is not a mature market where you can write off $100 million checks to companies that are spearheaded by college graduates or in some cases, dropouts. The entire ecosystem is disturbed as new companies were getting funding at overhyped valuations. The market has started to finally stabilize and we see investors going back to the revenue as a yardstick for company’s growth instead of the GMV. The businesses are coming back to realistic valuations and while they might have money left in the bank, they are looking to reduce their cash burn rate.” 
 
 
 
India’s perspective: Companies like <keyword id="2808667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword> are trying to work with small hotels and guesthouses and have even leased their own properties but the burn-rate is consistent. With simplifying its business model and focusing on one aspect; people sharing their homes with people and minimal revamping, Airbnb has revolutionized how the world sees hotel accommodation forever. 
 
3. On-Demand Model: Smartphones have driven transformational shifts in how we consume goods and services, and many consumers have become acclimated to purchasing at the press of a button. The on-demand model allows a startup to leverage new technology while utilizing existing infrastructures. Another benefit lies in the use of freelance labor with its obvious advantages in cost cutting. 
 
Uber is a great example of the sharing economy where they connect the supply to the demand of taxis without investing in their own fleet. 
 
India’s perspective: <keyword id="6362049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Cabs">Ola Cabs</keyword> is Uber’s biggest competitor in India and while both companies burn a lot of money trying to lure customers to get into a taxi, Uber is currently the world’s most valuable startup at $69 billion.

 V. Krishnan, Co-founder, and Director of <keyword id="1675768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Justdial-Ltd">JustDial Ltd</keyword> who likes to call his company an ‘18-year old startup’ says that for a successful business you don’t need an extraordinary idea, “The problem with start-ups today is that they don’t focus on profitability. To create a profitable business, you need extraordinary execution, not an idea. Giving money to people to use your services doesn’t make sense. The Indian customers are not loyal to brands, but to offers. Our goal was to create a world-class business and a world-class company.’’ 
 
For the first ten years of JustDial’s existence, the company didn’t raise any funding. The company ran on a shoe-string budget and used its own money to survive. In 2006, when internet penetration and broadband gained traction in India, the company was ready with its fully functional website to complement its telecom services. From 2-3% internet users to now 85% internet users, the company has grown to 200 Cr web searches annually, without any cashback or incentives. The company is probably one of the rarely profitable internet companies in the country today.

“The core business of start-ups isn’t ready but there is marketing happening. India is going to be giving you a lot of opportunities. Everyone wants to create a company, raise a great valuation and sell it off to do something bigger; the attitude is wrong," he signs off.

While popular Indian start-ups struggle to survive without additional funding coming in, we see some internet companies like JustDial and BookMyShow staying afloat, without investor-intervention. 
 
When it comes to businesses and business models, investors and successful companies agree that the tried and tested works; build a business with a strong product that you can alter as technology develops. The business of losing money can only take you so far if you don’t put it to good use. 
 
There’s a difference between investment into a product and burning money, and the start-ups better realize that before they get acquired or relinquished by the players who created the game that they’re set to lose. 
 
The market is big enough for companies that create value for customers not just for start-ups that create customers; the difference is everything.

Uber’s aren’t working for Indian startups

All is not well at <keyword id="1960231" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Housing-com">Housing.com</keyword>. The founders of the realty portal are not happy with the new owners-PropTiger. <keyword id="1871874" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PropTiger">PropTiger</keyword> acquired Housing.com this year and following this, eight founders of the latter business allege they haven’t been offered equal purchase terms for their shares. The eight founders have written to the board of the combined entity, saying they have received differential treatment. “This differential treatment of same class of shares is a violation of our rights as shareholders,” the founders have stated in the letter. The letter, which was accessed by ET, was written by Housing's former chief technology officer Abhishek Anand to PropTiger chief executive Dhruv Agarwala and the representatives of the various shareholders in the combined entity. These shareholders include media conglomerate News Corp, Japanese telecom and internet major <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>, and investors Nexus Venture Partners, Falcon Edge Capital and Helion Venture Partners. "Angel investors have been offered an exit at a purchase price of Rs 350 per share or other favourable exit rights, while the shares held by us, belonging to the same class as those of the angel investors, are not being offered the same exit rights and are being differentially treated,” the Housing founders said in their letter, dated June 16. The letter further read: "The scheme of the proposed merger has not been communicated to us. As the shareholders of the company, we have a right to receive the relevant valuation report, copies of the board interaction, shareholders' interaction.” Business Insider contacted the PropTiger spokesperson who said, "No comments." This letter gains significance at a time when <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> is getting acquired by <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and a group of Snapdeal employees have sought information on the worth of their employee stock options.
