The $100 million mission is headed by a nonprofit called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-moon-probe-lunar-landing-2018-8">SpaceIL</a> that is based out of Tel Aviv University and backed primarily by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-moon-launch-israel-spaceil-morris-kahn-2019-2">South African billionaire Morris Kahn</a>.</p><p>In Beresheet's new selfie photo, which it took from 23,364 miles from Earth on Tuesday, a placard of the Israeli flag is visible that reads "Small country, big dreams."</p><p>If the robot successfully touches down on the lunar surface on April 11 as planned, Israel will become the fourth nation in history to pull off <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/space-history-achievements-since-apollo-8-moon-flight-2018-12">a moon landing</a>. But first Beresheet has to close the 239,000-mile gap between Earth and the moon.</p><p>"I wanted to show that Israel - this little country with a population of about 6 or 8 million people - could actually do a job that was only done by three major powers in the world: Russia, China, and the United States," Kahn told Business Insider before the launch. But Beresheet has not landed yet, let alone reach lunar orbit.</p><h2>Computer reboots en route to the moon</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Since its launch aboard a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-block-5-2018-5">Falcon 9 rocket</a> on February 21, Beresheet has experienced a number of problems. The first major issue was an onboard computer error. "The moon seems to be getting within reach."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The first computer reset and subsequent ones are likely being caused by radiation in deep space, mission managers said Monday, <a href="https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5473540,00.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Ynetnews</a>.<p>"There are many things that cannot be tested on Earth - different phenomena that occur in space - and we've ironed them out. Hopefully most of them," Doron said last week. "There will probably be some more surprises along the way, and we'll hopefully manage to deal with them as well."</p><p>Beresheet was designed to be relatively small to save on costs. It's about 5 feet tall and 6 feet wide, and 75% of its mass at launch was rocket fuel. As a result, its total journey to reach the moon, enter orbit, and touch down will take about about seven weeks.</p><p>The mission cost around $100 million - a fraction of the <a href="https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spacecraft/display.action?id=1968-001A" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$469 million</a> that NASA spent in the 1960s on seven similarly sized Surveyor moon landers. It's a dark lava-covered site of an ancient volcanic eruption. The area is also a source of magnetic and gravitational anomalies, and - in popular culture - the left eye of the "<a href="http://astronomy.com/news/2018/09/tonights-full-moon-offers-prime-view-of-man-in-the-moon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">man in the moon</a>."</p><p>Because Beresheet needed to be built light, engineers did not include a cooling system. This means the robot will overheat in the blistering sun on the moon <a href="https://www.heritagefl.com/story/2019/01/11/news/with-spaceil-launch-its-to-the-moon-and-beyond-for-israel/10930.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">after about three days</a>.</p><p>Until it overheats, Beresheet will take measurements of the moon's magnetic field using an instrument supplied by the University of California, Los Angeles. SpaceIL plans to share the data it collects with NASA and other space agencies. The spacecraft may also try to "hop" to another location using its thrusters.</p><p>Kahn said the scientific mission is not as important as what Beresheet's landing would symbolize.</p><p>"This project of ours will take Israel into deep space. I think this is a new frontier and actually what we're doing - this is the first nongovernmental project to go to the moon," Kahn said. "I think others will follow us. Over the past six weeks, the roughly 1,300-lb robot has gradually accelerated its way toward the moon. SpaceIL, a nonprofit group based out of Tel Aviv University, researched, designed, and built the spacecraft since 2011 on a mostly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-moon-launch-israel-spaceil-morris-kahn-2019-2">private budget of about $100 million</a>.</p><p>On Monday, mission controllers fired Beresheet's engines to achieve an elliptical orbit around the moon. The engine burn will slow down the spacecraft, cause the four-legged robot to fall out of lunar orbit, and gently touch down on the moon's surface.</p><p>SpaceIL expects Beresheet to land on the moon sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 11, according to an emailed press release. The group will also broadcast live footage of its historic lunar-landing attempt.</p><p>"This joint mission of SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will be broadcast live via satellite for a pool feed and live streamed with access to all media," SpaceIL said in its email, noting that the broadcast would show views from inside the spacecraft's mission control center in Yehud, Israel.</p><p>The <a href="https://contactgbs.com/space/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video feed</a>, embedded below, should activate on Thursday afternoon.</p><p>SpaceIL said the group would host a press conference immediately after the landing. The group also said it'd share exact timing for a landing attempt closer to the actual event.</p><h2>Blazing a commercial path to the moon</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>SpaceIL got its start in 2011 on the heels of the Google Lunar XPrize, which offered more than $20 million to the first privately funded entity to land on the moon and pull off a series of difficult tasks.</p><p>Three engineers took a stage during <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20160303233251/http://www.fisherinstitute.org.il/?CategoryID=139&amp;ArticleID=46&amp;Archive=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a space conference</a> and announced their intentions to build and launch a lunar lander - gumption that caught the attention of South African-born billionaire Morris Kahn.</p><p>"They seemed very proud of themselves, and I thought that this was rather neat," Kahn previously told Business Insider.</p><p>After SpaceIL's presentation, Kahn - who at the time had a net worth to <a href="https://www.idolnetworth.com/morris-kahn-net-worth-51149" target="_blank" rel="noopener">close $1 billion</a>- asked the group's leaders if they had any money.</p><p>"They said, 'Money? Money, what's that for?' I said, 'Without money, you're not going to get anywhere,'" Kahn said. "I said to them, 'Look, come to my office, I'll give you $100,000 - no questions asked - and you can start.' And that was how I innocently got involved in this tremendous project."</p><p>The mission ultimately cost about $100 million - a fraction of the <a href="https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spacecraft/display.action?id=1968-001A" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$469 million</a> that NASA spent in the 1960s on seven similarly sized Surveyor moon landers. According to <em>Discover Magazine</em>, scientists from NASA’s Lincoln Laboratory and MIT have shown that it’s possible to beam a wireless Internet signal across the approximate distance of 386243 KM between the Earth and the Moon. This means it is possible for Moon dwellers to experience Wi-Fi connectivity that is similar to what we enjoy here on Earth, with the possibility of large data transfers and high-definition video streaming now within the reach.<br />

According to <em>Discover Magazine</em>, to achieve this feat, scientists used four separate telescopes based in New Mexico to send an uplink signal to a receiver mounted on a <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satellite">satellite</keyword> orbiting the Moon.<br />

The Earth’s atmosphere bends the signal as it travels to the Moon – so the four telescopes transmit the light through separate columns of air, each with unique bending effects. This increases the probability of at least one of the laser beams interacting with the receiver, thus successfully establishing a connection with the Moon.<br />

Now on to the most important question – what about the speed? While transmitting data from the Earth to the Moon, the team achieved a speed of 19.44 megabits per second, which is pretty impressive and comparable to slower broadband speeds. However, when downloading information from the Moon, a speed of 622 megabits per second was achieved, which is quite remarkable for a connection across the vast distances of space.<br />

She made a point of taking it to the beach with her husband, three days after she landed in Kazakhstan, according to <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/record-setting-nasa-astronaut-christina-koch-felt-like-a-baby-after-11-months-in-space-11932791?dcmp=snt-sf-twitter">Sky News.</a></p><p>"I'm not sure who was more excited to see the other," she said.</p><p>The electrical engineer-turned astronaut said she counted herself lucky to not have suffered more serious ailments.</p><p>Astronaut Scott Kelly, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-station-astronaut-record-holders">who holds NASA's record</a> for spending 340 days in space - the longest single space flight ever - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scott-kelly-space-travel-effects-human-body-2016-6/?IR=T&amp;r=SG">reportedly still had sore feet and burning skin</a> three months after ending his mission in 2016.</p><p>Being in space for long periods of time can affect the human body in many different ways.</p><p>Side-effects include a significant loss of bone density and a drop in muscle mass, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gaping-holes-elon-musk-and-jeff-bezos-space-plans-2019-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">Business Insider reported last year.</a> The lack of gravity on the International Space Station can also cause astronauts' hearts to change shape.</p><p>"In space, your heart becomes rounder ... because there's no gravity to pump against," Prof. Kevin Moffat, who specializes in human physiology in extreme environments, told Business Insider.</p><p>Currently, three astronauts remain at the space station, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-astronaut-jessica-meir-celebrates-hanukkah-from-space-2019-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">including Jessica Meir</a> who took part in the record-breaking all-female spacewalk with Koch last year.</p><p>Just before her return to Earth, Koch told reporters: "Oh, how I miss the wind on my face, the feeling of raindrops, sand on my feet and the sound of the surf crashing on the Galveston beach.</p><p>"We take daily sensory inputs for granted until they are absent … I cannot wait to feel and hear Earth again."</p><ul class="read-more-links"><li>Read more:</li><li><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronaut-christina-koch-earth-photos-from-space-world-record-2020-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">Astronaut Christina Koch just broke the world record for the longest time spent in space by a woman. 10 things in tech you need to know today

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The same microbes that grow on cheese can also grow inside a Mars simulation chamber.</p><p>That might not sound like a big deal. But what if those microbes somehow made it to the real Mars?</p><p>We've launched tons of spacecraft, probes, and rovers to the red planet, all potentially carrying a few microbes from Earth.</p><p>Accidentally contaminating Mars could have big consequences. It might trick us into thinking we've discovered life on Mars when it's actually just Earth-grown stowaways.</p><p>But in some sense we've already contaminated it.</p><p>"Every mission to Mars makes it dirtier," Catharine Conley, a planetary protection officer at NASA, told Business Insider.</p><h2>Why NASA has a celestial sheriff</h2><p>Conley probably has the coolest job title at NASA, but it comes with a huge responsibility.</p><p>A <a href="http://planetaryprotection.nasa.gov/">planetary protection officer</a> is charged with making sure we don't contaminate the rest of the universe with life from Earth. And, even more importantly, the reverse - to make sure we don't bring any alien microbes home.</p><p>The job was created because of an international law called the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. Specifically, <a href="http://history.nasa.gov/printFriendly/1967treaty.html" target="_parent">Article IX</a> is what a planetary protection officer worries about. Mostly just this one sentence:</p><p>"States Parties to the Treaty shall pursue studies of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, and conduct exploration of them so as to <strong>avoid their harmful contamination and also adverse changes in the environment of the Earth resulting from the introduction of extraterrestrial matter</strong> and, where necessary, shall adopt appropriate measures for this purpose."</p><p>That's why you couldn't just shove the body of your astronaut friend out of the airlock if he or she <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-if-someone-dies-in-space-2015-4">died during space travel</a>. There's a chance (a very small chance) that the body could drift to an alien world and colonize it with Earth microbes.</p><p>Even unmanned space exploration missions have to address contamination risk, but it's pretty impossible to completely sterilize spacecraft and space probes before they leave Earth. So the creators of the Outer Space Treaty decided that risk was worth what we could learn from exploring the universe.</p><p>They settled on a 1-in-10,000 risk. That means any space exploration mission must have less than a 1-in-10,000 chance of contaminating an alien world.</p><p>"It's a moderate level," Conley said. "It's not extremely careful, but it's not extremely lax."</p><h2>Problem #1: Bringing Earth to alien worlds</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Mars has bared the brunt of human meddling. It's unlikely any spacecraft that landed there was 100% sterile.</p><p>NASA sends its spaceships and rovers through a <a href="http://planetaryprotection.nasa.gov/overview">microbe-killing heat blast</a>, but recent evidence shows that some particularly hardy microbes can survive.</p><p>The good news is that Mars (and most of the rest of the solar system) seems pretty hostile to life. So anything we've carried there isn't going to flourish even if it survived the journey.</p><p><a href="http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/fact_sheets/viking.pdf">NASA's Viking missions</a> pretty much confirmed that at least the surface of Mars isn't conducive to life. It'll most likely kill off any bacteria that land on Martian soil. So now anything that goes to Mars has about as many microbes as a human hand, since the risk of contamination is so low.</p><p>There are, however, a few promising potential homes for life in our solar system, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/types-of-alien-life-on-europa-2015-2">Jupiter's moon Europa</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/active-hydrothermal-vents-on-enceladus-2015-3">Saturn's moon Enceladus</a>. Any mission that comes close to either of those moons is treated with a lot of caution, Conley said.</p><p>For example, the European Space Agency's (ESA) upcoming mission to Jupiter needs special attention, since that probe will fly so close to Europa, Conley said.</p><p>ESA wants to make a couple of very tight passes around Europa, but only if its spacecraft, named the <a href="http://sci.esa.int/juice/" target="_blank">Jupiter Icey moons Explorer (JUICE)</a>, proves it has excellent control - crash-landing on Europa simply isn't an option.</p><p>To mitigate that risk, ESA will first command JUICE to make a few test orbits around Jupiter. If all seems well, they'll program the spacecraft to fly by Europa a few times, gathering a bunch of data in the process, then return back into orbit around Jupiter.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>So what would happen if we did contaminate somewhere in our solar system with Earth microbes - and ones that could survive on an alien world? </strong>A clean-up mission would be too expensive. The bottom line is that we "recognize that there is a risk of failure," Conley said. We take the risk, Conley said, because what we gain from space exploration is worth it.</p><p>We're exploring as carefully and as smartly as we know how, but eventually places like Mars - despite being so hostile to life - might end up too contaminated for certain types of microbe-hunting scientific experiments.</p><h3>Problem #2: Bringing aliens to Earth</h3><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Bringing Earth microbes to an alien world would be bad, but the reverse scenario</span> is a much bigger concern, Conley said. We don't want to accidentally bring something nasty, like the fictional <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066769/" target="_blank">Andromeda Strain</a>, to humanity's only haven.</p><p>So making sure we don't contaminate Earth with extra-terrestrial microbes is the highest priority of a planetary protection officer.</p><p>As space agencies plan more and more missions out into the Solar System, it's becoming a serious concern.</p><p>For example, if Mars astronauts got infected with something while on Mars, should we bring them back to Earth? The short answer is no, Conley said during a talk at the recent <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CB4QFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fh2m.exploremars.org%2F&amp;ei=cCuDVcWTJ8S0sASUh4LwAg&amp;usg=AFQjCNF-X-iMziyQFY_D2OnPBa2otW4_kQ&amp;bvm=bv.96041959,d.cWc">Humans to Mars Summit</a> in Washington, D.C.</p><p>The Apollo program, in fact, set up a quarantine facility to receive the first astronauts who returned from the moon, since they were covered in moon dust. Moon rock samples were cautiously sent to biosafety labs. We soon learned the moon didn't harbor any life, so later missions didn't use the same kind of rigorous screening.</p><p>But when we bring people and samples back from still unexplored worlds like Mars, we'll need to exercise the same kind of caution. Here's why you can't just push a dead body into outer space

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">NASA handout photo of a stellar nursery located about 20,000 light-years from the planet earth in the constellation Carina</p></div><p></p></div></div>If you could travel instantly to anywhere in the universe, where would you go?</p><p>Tech Insider recently spoke with NASA's deputy administrator Dava Newman and we asked her the same question.</p><p>Instead of a distant exoplanet or an exotic moon, Newman picked somewhere surprisingly close to home.</p><p>"Mars is my number one answer," Newman said.</p><p>There are a lot of <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/bill-nye-why-send-humans-to-mars-2015-4">good reasons to go to Mars</a>. We could learn a ton about the solar system and our own planet. The mission would drive technological innovation several leaps forward. We might even discover microbial life hiding below the Martian surface.</p><p>It'll be a huge challenge, but Newman thinks the agency is "up to the task."</p><p>Indeed, for the last few years NASA has adamantly declared that it's on a "<a href="http://www.nasa.gov/content/nasas-journey-to-mars/">Journey to Mars</a>."</p><p>Newman said that journey includes three phases: learning about how space affects the human body from experiments on the International Space Station, testing out a <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/#.VrpQ1DYrKi4">giant new rocket and space capsule</a> and proving they work while orbiting between the Earth and the moon, and eventually using that launch system to send humans all the way to Mars.</p><p>It sounds like a logical progression, but it's a plan without a price tag or a specific timeline. Most reports NASA has released about its journey to Mars are just strategic overviews and nonspecific.</p><p>John Sommerer, a space scientist who has helped review NASA's human spaceflight progress, recently criticized the Mars plan during a <a href="https://science.house.gov/legislation/hearings/space-subcommittee-hearing-charting-course-expert-perspectives-nasa-s-human">House space subcommittee hearing on Feb. 3</a>.</p><p>"While sending humans to Mars, and returning them safely to the Earth, may be technically feasible, it is an extraordinarily challenging goal, from physiological, technical, and programmatic standpoints," Sommerer said. "Because of this extreme difficulty, it is only with unprecedented cumulative investment, and, frankly, unprecedented discipline in development, testing, execution, and leadership, that this enterprise is likely to be successful."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Curiosity_Approaching_Mars,_Artist%27s_Concept.jpg">NASA</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>It seems NASA isn't quite on that level yet. Sommerer contributed to a <a href="http://www.nap.edu/catalog/18801/pathways-to-exploration-rationales-and-approaches-for-a-us-program">2014 review</a> that found NASA would need 20 to 40 years and half a trillion dollars to pull off a manned mission to Mars.</p><p>NASA got a <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/nasa-budget-increase-congress-2015-12">slight raise</a> for its 2016 budget ($19.3 billion), but the <a href="http://spacenews.com/white-house-proposes-19-billion-nasa-budget/">proposed budget for next year</a> is $3 million less than that. The budget decrease doesn't bode well for the future of human spaceflight. If you multiply $19 billion by 20 years, you come up very short of half a trillion dollars.</p><p>It's also the president's job to guide NASA, so next year when a new president takes office, he or she might choose to direct NASA somewhere other than Mars.</p><p>Mars is possible, but until we see some solid numbers, reasonable timeline, and administrative support, it's doubtful if NASA will be the one to get us there.</p><p>Private spaceflight companies like SpaceX are starting to <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/spacex-biggest-rocket-ever-mars-2016-1">plan their own Mars missions</a>. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The definition of an action star is changing and there's no better example of that then the recent success of The Rock.</span><p>Since the early 2000s, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has gone from being one of the biggest names at WWE to becoming one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood.</p><p>This was confirmed over the weekend when Johnson's latest film, disaster movie "San Andreas," topped all projections with a $53 million domestic <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4063&amp;p=.htm">opening weekend</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Johnson's blueprint for success has been filled with trial and error, but in the last five years he's hit his stride thanks to jumping on popular movie franchises and constantly engaging his huge fan base on social media.</p><p>The "San Andreas" opening proves Johnson doesn't just need to be the burly member of an ensemble to attract audiences.</p><p>Let's look at six reasons he's made the jump to super stardom.</p><h3><strong>1. He's learned from past failures.</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Though Johnson created one of the most memorable WWE wrestling characters in its history with The Rock - a buff catch-phrase-a-second renegade who was the perfect anti-hero for wrestling fans thrusting for something different in the late '90s - his transition to action movie star was a tough hill to climb.</span></p><p>He jumped around from straight-up action movies like "The Scorpion King" and "Doom," which showed off his exterior qualities, to more light-hearted fare that proved he could be entertaining on screen like "The Rundown" and "The Game Plan." He even slimmed down his size and tried to go the family-friendly route with films "Race to Witch Mountain," "Tooth Fairy," and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Though these different routes proved Dwayne Johnson was more than "The Rock," he wasn't a star who could carry a film.</p><p>So he got strategic.</p><h3><strong>2. The "Furious" franchise solidified his action star status.</strong></h3><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Instead of trying to do it alone, as the action stars of the '80s and '90s did it, Johnson saw an opportunity to shine in movies with ensemble casts.</span><p>In 2011 he joined the "Fast and Furious" franchise in "Fast Five" as the massively huge (yes, he went back to the weight room) agent Hobbs who's hired to arrest Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his street racing gang. The movie was number one at the box office its opening weekend with $86 million (it went on to have a <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fastfive.htm">worldwide gross</a> of over $600 million).&#xa0;</p><p>In 2013's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," Johnson came onto the franchise headed by Channing Tatum as the jacked-up character Roadblock. No one ever questioned Johnson's believability in an action movie, but here we saw his talents working off other actors with sly one-liners. Again, the movie was number one at the box office its opening weekend with <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=gijoe2.htm">$40 million</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>The same year, Johnson returned to play agent Hobbs in "Fast &amp; Furious 6" and earlier this year in "Furious 7." Both films did number one their opening weekends at the box office. "FF 6" made close to <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fast6.htm">$800 million</a>&#xa0;worldwide while "Furious 7" has crossed <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fast7.htm">$1 billion</a>. The latter is now one of the <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/davegonzales/2015/04/06/furious-7-marks-universals-biggest-franchise-ever/">most profitable franchises</a> of all time for Universal.&#xa0;</p><p>Johnson's role in both were ingrained more in the storylines and audiences couldn't get enough of his dark stare and tough guy act.</p><p>But on the internet, we saw another side.</p><h3><strong>3. He's built a massive social media presence.</strong></h3><div><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">&#xa0;</span><div></div></div><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With over 49 million <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DwayneJohnson/timeline">Facebook</a> &#xa0;likes, 8 million plus followers on <a href="https://twitter.com/TheRock">Twitter</a>, and over 15 million followers on <a href="https://instagram.com/therock/">Instagram</a>, Johnson has not been shy to show off his daily life to his fans, and that has only made him more relatable. From working out to flexing on The Great Wall of China to just washing his pick up truck, he's shown his fans everything with a hint of humor and likability that proves he's more just the tough guys he plays on screen.</span></p><p>It's also an example of the brand he's building.</p><h3><strong>4. This is just a small example of how he's shown he's a different kind of action star.</span></p><p>But zany antics aren't anything new to Johnson. He was even on the debut episode of the popular Spike show "Lip Sync Battle." Could you have ever imagined Schwarzenegger or Stallone singing a popular pop song in their prime? <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/04/03/the-rock-lip-sync-battle-shake-it-off_n_6999160.html">And pull it off</a>?&#xa0;</p><p>And knowing TV will only extend his brand to those who aren't into butt-kicking movies, Johnson will headline the HBO series "Ballers" later this month. In it he'll play a former football player who turns to being a financial adviser for former players (he's also an executive producer on the show).</p><h3><strong>5. Since he hung up his "Brahma Bull" tights in the early 2000s, The Rock has returned occasionally to WWE's major Pay-Per-View events to huge ovations.</span></p><p>Most recently he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ronda-rousey-wwe-wrestlemania-ufc-the-rock-2015-3">appeared at WrestleMania</a> with UFC champion Ronda Rousey, who put the smackdown on WWE bigwig Stephanie McMahon after McMahon slapped The Rock. It turned out to be one of the most memorably moments of the evening.&#xa0;</p><p>Johnson is certainly aware that this is still his bread-and-butter fan base and has been smart to show that he still appreciates them.</p><h3><strong>6. Massive stunts/destruction only helps.</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Though "San Andreas" has shown Johnson can bring in box office dollars without the help of a loaded ensemble cast, he's also aware his fans want him in dangerous situations. Johnson hasn't gotten to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-tom-cruise-did-plane-stunt-in-new-mission-impossible-rogue-nation-2015-3">Tom Cruise-hanging-from-flying-planes level</a>, but whether it's firing massive guns or rescuing his family as large skyscrapers crumble behind him, audiences are buying a ticket to see the spectacle as much as they are to see The Rock.</span></p><p>Naturally, he's keeping the big movies coming. He's going to try his hand at another "Journey" film with "Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon," which will be out next year and will, if anything, be a CGI spectacle.
