Eight years after it launched, sugar daddy dating site <a href="http://www.seekingarrangement.com/">Seeking Arrangement</a> is still generating controversy.
There's still a taboo around an older man paying lavishly for the company of a much younger woman — while the women are sometimes portrayed as either victims or prostitutes.
But not every Sugar Baby is a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/college-girls-sign-up-for-sugar-daddy-site-2013-1" target="_blank">20-something trying to pay her way through school</a>.
We spoke with "T", a 40-year-old consultant who lives in Virginia. T makes $150,000 a year, and uses the site to find what she calls "mutually beneficial" relationships. She talked about what it's like to be a Sugar Baby, her past Sugar Daddies, and if the site is really as bad as it seems.
Why did you sign up to be a member of Seeking Arrangement?
I have been in two long-term mutually-beneficial situations in the past. My intention was to go on the site and meet like-minded people.
How many people on average reach out to you a day on the site?
It varies. It can be anywhere from 15 to 20, to as many as around 100. A lot depends on the time of the year, actually.
What's your profile like?
My profile tends to intimidate, it's kind of a weeding out process. The Sugar Daddies that may approach other women would not necessarily approach me.
They wait, and if I approach them they say, "I saw your profile, but I was a little intimidated so I'm glad you reached out to me."
What makes it intimidating?
It could be the photos, or my height. I mean I'm 5'10'' — if you put 6'' Louboutins on me, I tend to be a little scary.
Or it could be my education level. I've had a lot of men comment on how highly educated I am.
And then when you get to the meat of my profile, you can see it's not my first time at the rodeo, and that I know what I'm looking for. I'm very blunt, to the point, and no nonsense.
Would you consider yourself a typical Sugar Baby?

I'm more of the "Grand Dame," if you will. I'm older, but then I've found there's something for everybody and every taste, just like any typical dating site.
Is there a typical type of Sugar Daddy?
The men that I tend to attract are very dynamic, successful, been-there-done-that kinds of men. They don't want the typical airhead that they have to lead around.
They want somebody who they can speak intellectually with, talk business with, and who they are proud to be seen with by their business compatriots.
But also someone who can twist them into a pretzel in the bedroom.
What is a typical arrangement like on the site?
Everyone on there is going to be looking for something different. You're going to find a lot of people who are just looking for basic relationships.
They want somebody that's going to be loving towards them, and that will take care of them.
What is your typical arrangement like?
For me specifically, I've come to the point in my life where I appreciate a man who knows how to take care of a woman. I like being spoiled and looked after. 
But also, I'm working 70-80 hours a week, so if he's working 70-80 hours a week too and we're both traveling, somebody's going to have to cut back on their work schedule.
I'm at the point in my life where I'm willing to do that. So that's where the allowance comes in, or the stipend. I work crazy hours so if you want me to be on your schedule, you're going to have to accommodate me and make sure that I'm taken care of financially.
What do you look like?
I'm in my 40s. I'm 5'10'', blonde — I've been told I look a bit like Sharon Stone. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad, but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.
Do your friends or family know that you're on SeekingArrangement?
Yes. My family does, and some of my friends do. I have a very close-knit group of friends.
Do you currently have a Sugar Daddy?
I have a couple of gentlemen who are interested, and I guess who are "applying" for the position.
How many Sugar Daddies have you had?
I've had two long-term arrangements that were about four years each. They were off and on. One was married, one was not.
Both of these individuals were very high-profile people, very famous — one of them was a little bit of politics and a lot of business, and the other one was in entertainment and dabbled a little bit in business as well.
I'm still friends with both of these gentlemen to this day.
The man who was married — did you ever have an encounter with his wife?

We had an interesting luncheon when I first met her. And she said, "Look, this is the deal: Be discrete, take good care of him, and just understand my position, as I understand yours. As long as we're fine with each other it shouldn't be an issue."
Have you ever tried any other online dating sites?
I have tried other sites. Oh god, I tried Match.com and it was atrocious. It's just the dregs of humanity, it's horrible.
On MillionaireMatch.com, the men don't know what they want, plus 90% are lying through their teeth.
I have also tried SugarDaddie.com and I find it's okay, but I would say the majority of the men on there don't know what they want or they just want a relationship.
Why do you like arrangements?
For me and my lifestyle, I find being in an arrangement to be highly erotic. I don't do it because I need to, I do it because I want to.
Have any users made you feel uncomfortable or sent you ridiculous messages?
Yes. Don't drink and text, and don't drink and put up a profile. It's incredible.
But the staff is very vigilant about it. If someone is proposing something really uncomfortable or something illegal, they're done. They're off.
Has there ever been a moment where you have had trouble accepting a gift?
No. Definitely not. I come from the position that I believe that every man should treat every woman like this anyway. I think we have lost that as women. We've allowed men to digress into this mentality that we should take care of them, and there's no chivalry.
If a man feels that he wants to give a gift — if he's thought about it, taken the time to give from his heart, and he wants me to have it — I don't find it to be unusual at all.
What's the most extravagant gift you've ever been given?
A house. I've also gotten cars, very expensive jewelry, and furs.
What do you wish more women knew about the site?

If you want to work that's fine, but being taken care of is not giving away your right as a woman to be independent. Men should want you to have nice things.
What does the media get wrong about SeekingArrangement.com?
The first thing people want to do is hang the term prostitution on this. And it's not. I can tell you very truthfully that most of the men that I have met are not necessarily looking for sex, they're looking for companionship. They're looking for someone they feel is an equal, someone they can rely on, and who they can trust.
I mean, yes there's the old-world-style mistress, but that is really not the end-all-be-all to it. It's just a very small percentage.

In some cases, they provide companionship or foster a mentor-mentee relationship. In other situations, the terms of the agreement include physical intimacy.<h2>Welcome to Sugar Baby University</h2>SeekingArrangement.com was founded by MIT graduate Brandon Wade in 2006 and now counts 10 million members worldwide, making it the biggest Sugar Baby and Sugar Daddy dating site on the web.A couple years ago, the site noticed an uptick in the number of members signing up with a university email address, Alexis Germany, a spokesperson for SeekingArrangement.com, told Business Insider. That's more than two and a half times what they owed a decade ago, <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/08/24/5-facts-about-student-loans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to Pew</a>, and it's thanks to higher-than-ever enrollment numbers and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-chart-shows-college-tuition-growth-since-1980-2016-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">rising college tuition costs</a>."Some of [the Sugar Daddies] have that 'white knight' scenario where they really want to be helping somebody and saving them from their debt - or whatever you want to call it," Germany said. The average annual income for Sugar Daddies who use SeekingArrangement.com is $250,000 and the average net worth is $1.5 million, she said, although those figures are self-reported.Sugar Baby students get a SeekingArrangement.com premium account free of charge. A one-month membership typically costs $20 for Sugar Babies and $80 for Sugar Daddies and Mommas.<h2>'What are you looking for?'</h2>To understand what one of these partnerships looks like, Business Insider spoke with Christina, a 29-year-old Sugar Baby who lives in Las Vegas.Currently an online MBA student at Michigan State University, Christina turned to SeekingArrangement.com a few years ago for help with college costs after her uncle, who previously paid for her education, passed away."That was when it finally set in and I was looking at the prices and I was looking at how much debt I was getting in and I had already started my MBA," said Christina, who received her first bachelor's degree in fashion design and merchandising, and at the time was in the middle of earning her second bachelor's in political science and pre-law from Oakland University. With education as her priority, Christina thought she'd probably be different than the typical Sugar Baby who was after expensive gifts and cash, she said."One of the very first messages that pretty much everyone sends, on either side, is 'What are you looking for?' because we want to make sure we're on the same page," Christina explained.Christina says she isn't willing to have sex for money, though she knows some sugar babies who do."I'm not a person that is interested in one-night stands with people who are visiting Vegas for a couple days - that's not interesting to me. If that's what you're going to come at me with, my response is going to be, thank you for the offer, but I'm going to pass," she said."On my profile it specifically says, I'm going to school for this, this is what I'm looking for, I would like help paying for my school and my books," Christina said. That's the kind of straightforwardness and honesty that's expected of all users on the site, she says.Even so, there have been situations where Christina will agree to dinner under her terms and still get propositioned for sex. She's learned "the site isn't foolproof," she says. In total, Christina estimates she's been given "at least $90,000" from these men and others to pay for tuition, books, labs, and other education-related costs."People are more gracious and more willing to do more for you [when you aren't demanding] ... as opposed to someone who's sitting there saying, this is what I'm expecting and if I get less than this I want nothing to do with you," she said.Christina has been given extra money after finals week so she can pamper herself and take care of her other bills, like insurance and rent. The Sugar Daddies also plan and pay for expensive weekend trips on a whim. But ultimately, Christina says she calls the shots."They know that school comes first to me," she said. "If a trip is offered to me or something and I say I can't because I have school, they back off right away."<h2>The stigma is the hardest part</h2>Christina still has two semesters left before she completes her MBA, then she's hoping to start law school. Millions of college students are so terrified of loans they're turning to 'Sugar Daddies' for help paying for school

The Daily News found that <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/nyc-college-girls-seeking-sugar-daddies-article-1.1239758">285 women from New York University</a> and 100 women from Columbia University created profiles last year on Seekingarrangement.com, a site that helps "sugar babies" find wealthy benefactors.
So, given the fact that law school is notoriously expensive, <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/2013/01/why-take-out-student-loans-when-you-can-finance-law-school-as-a-sugar-baby/">Above The Law asked its users</a> if any of them would be willing to do the same to finance their education.
And as of Tuesday afternoon, a whopping 67 percent said they would.

Survey Shows More Than A Few Law Students Would Use A Sugar Daddy To Pay Off Debt

Alix Tichelman is suspected of shooting heroin into Google employee Forrest Tim Hayes on his yacht in Santa Cruz harbor and then leaving the scene when he started suffering medical complications. 
Police arrested Tichelman after tracking her down from a surveillance video on the boat that allegedly showed her making no effort to help the suffering Hayes after giving him the heroin, and then drinking a glass of wine and drawing the blinds before leaving the boat. Police said they made the arrest after luring her to a high-end hotel in Santa Cruz under the belief that she was meeting a rich client who would pay her more than $1,000 for sex. 
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Tichelman and Hayes met on SeekingArrangement.com, a website for "sugar daddies and sugar babies seeking mutually beneficial relationships."
Tichelman is being held in Santa Cruz County Jail with a $1.5 million bail. Hayes is survived by his wife and five children.

Last September Wade started yet another dating site in his empire, which now numbers five major sites. <a href="https://www.carrotdating.com/about">Carrot Dating</a> is a mobile app that literally requires men to offer bribes to women for dates, with gifts ranging from chocolate to jewelry. Wade believes it's a humorous way to kick off a relationship.
When Business Insider talked to Wade, he told us how he got into paid dating in the first place, and how he met his wife, after years of being too shy to even talk to women. He also gave us some personal pictures from his early life to illustrate his story.

This Never-Been-Kissed MIT Nerd Built A 'Sugar Baby' Dating Empire That Some Say Is Simply Prostitution

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">AP Photo/Jae C. Hong</div></div>The sex industry in the Valley is still booming, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/07/10/silicon-valley-prostitution/12488225/">Jessica Guynn of USA Today reports</a>. 
"Silicon Valley is like a military base: There are very few civilian women and lots of money," one Silicon Valley entrepreneur told USA Today on condition of anonymity.
That doesn't seem to be the case in other cities. <a href="http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/413047-Underground-Commercial-Sex-Economy.pdf">The Urban Institute released a report</a> in March that tracked the sex trade in eight big cities across the United States. In five cities, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-economics-of-prostitution-sex-lies-and-prostitution-2014-3">the underground sex industry shrank between 2003 and 2007</a>.
Sex workers have been flocking to the Valley for quite some time, Guynn writes: 
At the height of the dot-com boom in 1997, the San Jose Mercury News called the technology industry a "prime target for trafficking" because of all the "lonely single men with money to burn."
And that still seems to be the how it is today. One sex worker interviewed by CNN last year says she's made <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sex-worker-says-shes-made-close-to-1-million-servicing-young-rich-guys-from-silicon-valley-2013-4">close to $1 million</a>.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sex-workers-in-silicon-valley-2013-4">The sex workers even use technology</a> such as Square and social networks to help their businesses run more efficiently. 
This week an alleged high-end prostitute named Alix Tichelman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/prostitute-alix-tichelman-charged-with-google-exec-murder-2014-7">was arrested on suspicion of killing</a> Forrest Hayes, a Google exec. 
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that Tichelman and Hayes met on SeekingArrangement.com, a website for "sugar daddies and sugar babies seeking mutually beneficial relationships."
And that's not the only website of its kind. 
"Before the Internet, clients didn't know where to find the prostitutes and prostitutes did not know where to find the clients. If you think about it in an economic sense, the Internet has removed a lot of the friction from the market," Scott Cunningham, an associate professor at Baylor University, told USA Today. "And when you reduce search friction, you get a lot more searching and a lot more of that activity."
The feds are trying to crack down on these anonymous websites; it recently shut down MyRedbook.com, and prosecutors are seeking $5.4 million from the people allegedly behind that website. 
But as soon as one website goes away, another crops up, according to local police departments. 
"Now that everyone has a smartphone at their fingertips, men can go on the Internet and don't have to worry about being out in the open," Sgt. Kyle Oki of the San Jose Police Department Human Trafficking Task Force told USA Today.
But things might be changing. The end of MyRedbook.com means that the sex workers no longer get free advertising, thus making it harder for clients to find them. The site also screens potential clients; without the middleman, the sex workers are afraid to take on new people.
But some people have found an alternate way to make money.
"I think any possibility of the current tech boom trickling down to sex workers is limited, partially because clients are afraid of the FBI now, and partially because they can't find our ads. I personally have turned to porn as a more consistent option," Kitty Stryker, a former escort and media manager for TroubleFilms, a gay and lesbian porn company, told USA Today.

He is in his mid-60s. His account, edited for clarity, is below, and he remains anonymous for privacy purposes. And she does not talk about sex for money.But most of them know if the arrangement is going to continue past the first date they have to make like a girlfriend and become intimate.<h2>I've been a sugar daddy for more than a decade</h2>I've had an account on SeekingArrangement.com since 2006, but I also tried Sugardaddyforme.com and was on Craigslist Erotic Services for years before that section was closed down.I have met countless women from these sites. I talk with them and hear their stories. I've seen some of the women for years and others were just one time and some in-between.The picture the advertisements paint of a hot, young college girl meeting a rich guy who pays them to look pretty while eating dinner and traveling places is mostly fake. Women read the stories and try to get that easy gig, but it's not really there.The women I meet are everyday people. They have jobs and an otherwise regular life. The sometimes controversial, always entertaining <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/seeking-arrangement-com-sets-you-up-with-a-sugar-daddy2011-10">online dating guru</a> just released a list of the 20 universities with the most "sugar baby" signups in 2012. Both Columbia and NYU made the list — perhaps not surprising considering they are some of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-20-most-expensive-colleges-in-america-2012-5">most expensive colleges in America</a>.
According to Wade, the website saw a 58 percent increase in co-ed signups in 2012, and 44 percent of the "sugar babies" on the website are now college students. The site seems to be encouraging the trend: anyone who signs up for the website with a college ".edu" email address gets a free membership upgrade.
In a press release, Wade blamed colleges and their ever-increasing tuition rates for the rise of co-eds on his "sugar daddy" site.
"College should be an opportunity to expand the mind and experience new things," Wade said in the release. "Unfortunately, because of the of recent tuition hikes, the college experience has become greatly unbalanced."
The average cost of tuition and fees at a private, 4-year university were $29,056 in 2012, a 4.2 percent increase over the previous year, according to <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/24/pf/college/public-college-tuition/index.html">CNN Money</a>.
The site, which claims to have over 2 million members worldwide, is based on the concept that it's perfectly OK to pay for relationships. It works by pairing "sugar babies" — cash-strapped women looking for companionship and cash — with "sugar daddies," benefactors who are willing to pay for their company.
